Rocker volume button...turns off ringer?

I have an otterbox case on my phone and when going to meetings and such I am used to lowering the volume via the rocker switch. One day I did that and (although I cannot replicate it) it turned off ther ringer completely. I know it did because: 1. the last little square on the volume indicator on the ringer display was gone and, 2. the three "arcs" on the ringer display also disappeared.
As I said I have tried over and over to replicate it but am unable to. I cannot remember what I did to turn it off via the rocker switch.
I try pressing the rocker switch to low and not letting go but that doesn't do it.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how do you do it?

iPhoNettie, you are right. The first time I tried it, the last little box was gone and the arcs disappeared. I brought the volume back up and tried it again, no go. The last little box would not go away. As I experimented, I realized, if I went into "Settings" and played the chime for my SMS alert, THEN I could silence via the rocker buttons again. Once I bring the volume up, no go again. Only after playing another sound could I silence it again via the "rockers". Weird...

use your imagination: assign an empty mp3 file (or an "only silent" mp3 file) to that contact, it should work.

My 3GS volume button fell off. It costs alot to fix it since they got to take it apart.
I was thinking of adding glue to put it back. Has anyone done this? Any good suggestions on which glue to use?

I would recommend an out of warranty repair or a 3rd party repair company and NOT glue.

Hi, try this method, it works for me on an iphone4 & 4S (iOS7)
make sure you have all apps closed before next steps.
-Go to Settings, Phone, Show My Caller ID. (if button is Greyed Out)
-Pull down Control Centre & Turn On Airplane Mode & return to Show My Caller ID screen.
-Now slide your screen from right to left taking you to another screen, then slide back to your Show My Caller ID screen.
-Now You Can turn ON or OFF your Caller ID Button.
-Lastly slide down you Control Centre again and Turn OFF your Airplane Mode.
Thats it Job done.
Please note, it will now stay in the mode that you have chosen(ON or OFF) even if you respring or reboot your phone. But if you return back to
Show My Caller ID screen, then you SIM Provider will automatically Disable your Caller ID screen BUTTON once again. So just repeat the steps
above and your be fine.

problem is both volume buttons turn the volume down.
pressing either volume button once brings up the volume window but doesn't increase or decrease the volume
Holding either volume button will decrease the volume only way to turn it back up is to go into settings or use that access thing (so a circle comes up) not ideal.
i Have changed the volume flex cable still same symptoms
i have factory restored it many times still the same
i have upgraded iOS from ios7 to iOS 7.3 or whatever the latest one is still the same.
any other solutions? Or fix's?

If the phone will not turn on at all, I would reset the device with this process:
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

My iPhone 4S volume keeps turning off.

I use the on/off switch on the side, above the normal volume buttons. I turn the volume on (so the keyboard clicks, notifications, text messages, etc.) are all audible but I notice later (several hours maybe) that my phones not making any noise (keyboard clicks, notifications, texts, etc.). I try turning the volume on again with the same volume button right above the normal volume buttons and it turns back on again. The same kind of thing happened with the brightness where the brightness would change on its own and I wouldn't notice until later and I check the brightness and see its down again. I found out my auto-brightness was on. Anyways, is there an auto-volume or something else that I'm missing?

I have faced this issue yesterday, but just for one app. Then I went to Notifications Center, turn all the settings of that app to off then turn it on again. Rebooth the device (press and hold Home and Sleep button simultaneally until turns off the device and appears the Apple logo), then everything works at a glance.

Phone turns off ringer on its own & I can't turn back on! Plz Read!

This phone has actually been more headaches then it was worth so far. I'm actually have a couple problems with this thing, all related to the sound/ringer. For some reason for the past month all on its own it'll just turn off my ringer somehow, but when I go into the profile, nothing has changed. It still says vibrate & tone are on. The ringer is still set the way I want it, but it doesn't do any kind of sound when it gets called or texts/pics, will only vibrate. Does that twice, then nothing, no ring, no matter how many times I go into the profiles & change the settings (with saving it), or even change profile from loud to normal to off & so on. Even taking the battery out doesn't do a reset everytime. Plus I'm getting tired of having to take the battery out cause I then have to take of the hard plastic case on it & always end up cracking it so have to spend another $5 for a new one, but thats a different thread on how to open a case.
The second problem is probably related to the first one, but her goes. When I do go into the ringer profiles, when I scroll to a new song/sound for a ringer, it doesn't play a preview of what it is anymore, so I know I screwed something up somewhere.
How do I get this stupid thing to start ringing again? Actually I just tested the alarm & that doesn't even work correctly, no sound. Am I somehow hitting a button when I silence, ignore the call since I don't press the red hang up button? Any and all help it greatly appreciated.

How do I turn off ringer?

My iPhone rings every time a new email comes in. I have an iPhone 4 with IOS 6. I can't find the exact OS? Where is it? I have everything I can find turned off in my iPhone. I have email out of "Notifications." It's driving my wife crazy and she is all over me. How can I get this ##### ringer turned off when an email comes in?

Turning off the sound for email is done in Settings>Sounds. You can set the new sound for mail to None. However, as an alternative you can set the phone to mute, which will turn all sounds off until it is turned off again. The mute switch is on the side of the phone.

Cannot change volume or turn off the TV..."Locked" comes across the screen

I've had FIOS for about a month now and tonight I went to turn the TV up, and "Locked" came across my TV. Tried to turn the TV off, same thing. I can change the channel, go to menu, etc, but just can't change the volume or turn the TV off. I tried resetting the programming on the remote and reprogramming it, but I still got the same thing. Has anyone else had this issue?

Hi i have a macbook pro (early 2011) and it recently had a new logic board
and since then the key board has been acting strange ,The up volume key turns the brightness down ,only one shift key works ,keyboard brightness up turns up volume and screen brightness ??
also when pushing the buttons when typing they type the following ``` [[[===
has anyone got any ideas ?? or is it a case of taking it back to the apple store ?

What if my home button turns off my iPod?

I restored my iPod, after using it for a while if i press the home button, it turns off, then it makes me plug it into itunes and re-restore. This happens continously, please help.

If it happens after restoring the iPod to factory settings/new iPod that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

HT1414 iPod Touch has a blank white screen and the computer does not recognise it. I have tried pressing the Home button and Up Volume button and Off button to no avail. Thank you

I tried to download an upgrade that was recommended by APPLE, the upgrade stopped halfway through and the iPod Touch was turned off, now the iPod Touch has a BLANK WHITE SCREEN and is UNRESPONSIVE to the COMPUTER

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
