Roland Fantom G8 to logic?

Hi there all together
I'm in serious trouble with my roland fantom g8. I linked it to my iMac via USB-Midi Cable and USB (fantom is said to be working like this). I also plugged in a line out from the fantom which goes into the audio input of the Mac.
Now, I'm still to stupid. Hitting the capslock I get sound from the fantom, but there's absolutely no midi transmission when I hit the keys of the fantom.
I made the environment as said in ninja's youtube-video:
Physical output to keys (incoming notes) to "showing notes" to sequenzer. Is there anything else I should do? In the physical output are the usb-midi-cable as well as the fantom. I changed the settings in the mac's in- and output as well.
Please help!
Kind regards from a helpless woman in Switzerland...
Adlerherz

You should never have to set up anything other than your usb connection from your fantom g8 to your imac. I have read posts on this forum where some members are responding to other members questions with the wrong information. The usb on the fantom G8 WILL transmit both audio and midi into an application. You may want to use an external sound device if your not satisfied with the quality of the recordings using the imac hardware, but that is another issue all together. I record HD audio (24/96) all the time directly from my fantom into my host application. That includes midi as well. Thought you might like to know....

  • How do I get signal from my Roland Fantom G8 to Logic Studio or GarageBand?

My computer recently crashed, and since then I have not been able to record any music into either Logic Studio or GarageBand.  I need to get back up and running ASAP, as I'm in the middle of recording music for 5 different projects.  Here's all the gear that I have:
    -1 Roland Fantom G8
-1 iMac with Logic Studio and GarageBand
    -1 M-Audio Fast Track Ultra
    -2 Rokit KRK Monitors
    -1 USB cable
    -1 midi cable
    -2 1/4-inch cables
    -2 1/4-in to XLR cables
The 2 1/4-inch cables run from Balanced Outputs 1 and 2 on the back on the Fantom G8 into Inputs 1 and 2 on the back of the Fast Track Ultra.  The 2 1/4-inch to XLR cables run from the back of the 2 KRK monitors into Outputs 1 and 2 on the back of the Fast Track Ultra.  The Fast Track Ultra is powered via USB cable that runs into a USB port on the back of my iMac.  The midi cable runs from the "Computer" port on the back of the Fantom G8 into a USB port on the back of my iMac.  This is the exact set-up I had before my computer crashed, and I was able to record just fine.  When I open up the audio preferences on either Logic Studio or GarageBand now, it recognizes the Fast Track Ultra; however, it does not recognize the Fantom G8.  What I'm trying to do is get signal from my Fantom G8 into both Logic Studio and GarageBand.  I also want that sound to then project through my KRK monitors.  I also want to be able to record audio and midi.  Please help me!!!

I used the Fantom for several years and did exactly what you want to do. I simply plugged my Fantom into a channel on my mixer, in your case the 003. I ran a firewire out of my mixer (Presonus Studio Live) into my computer using Logic Pro X. Then I just assigned that incoming channel to a channel strip in Logic. As an example I used stero channel 9/10 on my mixer, (plugged in the Fantom here). Then the signal went via my mixer firewire to computer running Logic. I assigned my channel strip input to channel 9/10.
    Does this make sense?
I just sold my Fantom last week and purchased a new Yamaha Motif XF8. Now I am trying to figure out the same thing on it.

  • RECORDING AUDIO through ROLAND FANTOM G8 on LOGIC PRO

Guys, I have been struggling for days, with such a ridiculously simple issue. I need to be able to record audio through my mic which is connected through my Roland Fantom G8 on one audio track in Logic, while simultaneously hearing the beat on another audio track through my computer's built-in output. Garageband does this automatically.
When I set the core audio input to the Roland Fantom, I can record just fine, but then I cannot hear the beat play through the computer's output. If I set the core audio input to built-in input, then I can hear the beat through the computer, but Logic does not detect my mic.
The program detects the Roland without me setting the core audio input to Roland Fantom, as I can record sounds on a midi track while simultaneously hearing the beat on an audio track. So why can I not record my vocals through the Roland on one audio track and simultaneously hear the beat on another audio track through the computer's output?
Somebody please let me know ASAP because I need to get this album of mine under way. It would be GREATLY appreciated.

It's quite common - people who are used to using entry-level tools don't necessarily realise that the software is designed to do a certain amount of hand-holding.
When moving to a professional program, people somehow think that the new program will do everything the entry-level one did and more, but everything will be even easier.
However, professional software is designed specifically to not do any hand-holding. It's assumed that people using professional software have a certain amount of skills. The software is designed to help them realise what they want, rather than constrain them in "easy-mode".
In short, it doesn't hold your hand, it doesn't tell you when to go to bed, and it won't look all dissapproving when you turn up the following morning with a hangover and half your clothes missing.
The trouble with having the pro stuff so accessible is a lot of people who are really at the level of using entry-level programs are using the pro stuff simply because they can - and then they get frustrated because these programs require some knowledge to use effectively.
Sit someone in front of Maya or After Effects (as an example) who has very little knowledge or experience, and they won't get far. And the software is not going to try to educate them.
And we see this with Logic Pro 8 like never before, as a lot of new users have come on board, whether because the price point or value is so attractive, or because LP8 is accessible in a way LP7 and before wasn't.
(Note, this is a general thing, not necessarily applied to the OP here...)

  • Getting AUDIO to come out of Roland Fantom XR in Logic 8

Hi. I am currently running Logic 8.
I have my computer hooked up via USB to the Roland Fantom-XR sound module.
I can get the computer to recognize the Fantom as a GM device. I can see the blinking lights go off on the Fantom when I press my controller, But I hear no audio coming out of my speakers and the speakers are playing other Logic events in the Arrange window just fine.
The question I guess I have is WHERE is the environment supposed to be set up in this scenario? Has anyone experience this problem?
    cheers to you all....

    Hi,
How have you routed the physical out(s) of the Fantom to the speakers? What are the speakers connected to? Do you use an audio interface?
    regards, Erik.

  • Logic Pro 8 and Roland Fantom G 8

    Hi there fellow musicians!
I have a great wish to control my setup using Roland Fantom G8 keyboard.
Here is what I have, what I want to do and what issues I have with it:
I have Fantom G connected to Logic 8 on my MacBook via usb,
then midi out from Fantom through standard midi cable, connected to M-Audio Audiophile USB interface on my slave PC.
I use audio routing from PC back to Logic through ethernet cable (audioport)
I would like to record Midi (played on Fantom as a masterkeyboard through usb midi) on Logic, then get the midi that's been recorded to Fantom MIDI OUT so i can play all the stuff on my PC.
Well...its supposed to be simple but **** it isn't.
I get all sort of issues with it, first of all,
how to switch between external channels of Fantom, so I would send just one channel signal to logic, not all channels.
Then I dont know how to set up the midi tracks in Logic, so they could record midi from the certain midi channel and then transmit it to my pc using midi out of my Fantom.
I tried many things really, but cant get it right.
I guess the problem lies somewhere in Fantom. What I want is just simply 16 different midi channels to go through fantom midi out to pc and also want to be able to record midi on logic using roland's usb as a midi device for the logic's midi input.
Hope I was clear enough to explain what am I struggling with and...please,please help me. You are my only hope
    Cheers,
    Kuba

Well i hope my explanation helps to solve you your provlem.
Firstly, Cheer up......cos ur gonna get away wid the problem wid dis........
    Lets start.......
    1. Install all the softwares that came with Fantom G6 ( Fantom G drivers & Fantom g editor).
    2. Connect your Fantom G via usb to ur Macbook.
    3. Launch Logic. It will search for all the available audio units (including FantomG).
    4. Start Logic with empty project. Create a new external midi track.(I hope u kno how to create external midi track. (If not then check out Logic's manual).
    5. Now at this point if everything goes well, then you may see that logic created a track named grand piano. On the right hand side you can see in library tabs that GM device first track is selected. Now u should see Fantom G there right above the GM device on the first place. Click on that & click on channel 1. Now you should see that your track name is changed to Prg 0=11.
    6. If u did this much correct. you are done & you are finished with the tough part....:) cheers.
    7. Now On fantom G click on studio mode. Now you are on internal mixer of fantom g. Select any instrument u wanna select..on the first channel (by default it shows G-grand) you can select any instrument.
    8. Here is something important......now since you wanna record midi on Logic which is an external sequencer you will have to move to external mixer on fantom g. To do this you have to click F8 twice on fantom g. That will take you to external mixer
    9. Select channel 1 on fantom g. Now go to Logic. & hit record (R)......Now you'll be able to record midi to Logic & u may see data entered in Logic's sequencer...........:)
    10. Likewise you may build your song by creating new tracks just the way you created this one & selecting different songs.......
    I hope this helped........
    Any further problems........you're most welcome...:)

  • When pressing record it triggers a note on my roland fantom keyboard

Equipment: Macbook Pro 13", Roland Fantom g8, m audio project mix
Hi, i know this is probably a simple fix but I am having some problems while trying to record my external midi. Every time i press record it will play a low note with a sound coming from the 2nd channel on the fantom. Sometimes it will continuously play that specific note and i cant turn it off. For the mean time i have been muting the channel on the keyboard but i want to know why it is doing that.If anyone has any pointers that would be awesome.
    Thank you, Brian T.

Check your metronome settings. Sounds like Logic is sending a midi click out on midi channel 2 to your keyboard. Disable it and just use the built in click.

  • Fantom X6 with Logic Studio

I have my Roland fantom x6 synth hooked to a midi interface, how do I access my sound inside the synth? Do I do this through logic by a patch script? How does this work?
    What is the easiest way?

Nope - nothing to do with the Audio MIDI Setup utility.
Assuming your Fantom is connected via MIDI, you need to tell Logic it exists.
Load your default template, open the enivonment window, select a new environment layer, New -> Multiinstrument.
Name is Fantom, enable all 16 parts by clicking on their little dashes on the object, and set it's parameters to the MIDI port the Fantom is connected on. Uncheck the icon checkbox. You might need to select the correct bank change format by double clicking on the multi and choosing the appropriate format (check your manual).
You can also input patch names here, but I'd leave that for now.
    Close the environment window.
Create a new arrange track, control-click on the track and choose Reassign track object -> and choose the "Fantom 1" which is MIDI channel 1 on your Fantom.
Now notes you play are echoed out to the Fantom on channel 1, and you can sequence it. You can easily create tracks for the other MIDI channels if necessary in the same way.
Once you've done this setup work, save it as your default template so your custom configuration is always available when you start a new song.
Basically, all we are doing is creating a little virtual Fantom and telling Logic which MIDI port it's on, so we can assign it to arrange tracks and sequence it.

  • Midi sync my Fantom x8 with logic

Ok...hello everyone, ive been breaking my head on this one....I have my fantom connected to logic via Mbox2(midi out on the fantom is going to midi in on the mbox and midi out of the mbox is going to midi in on the fantom) and I can record MIDI coming in but when i play it back it doesnt trigger the patches on the fantom, it doesnt trigger anything...I want to be able to edit and sequence what I play on my fantom in logic....Can anyone help?

Do you have it set up for reception. What channel is it set to
recieve on? Do you have an external instrument object set up?

  • Connecting roland XV-2020 to logic

has anyone had any success connecting a roland XV-2020 to logic? when i try to install the drivers i get an error related to preflight scripts.

If you really want to divide a MIDI recording into separate kit elements, you can use "Separate MIDI Events" under the MIDI menu.
But... I'd recommend you probably don't need to do that.  What sampler are you using to play the MIDI track recorded from the TD-20 ?  That plug-in probably gives you all the control you need over individual drum sounds, and it also may give the option of multiple bus outputs if you want to route drum audio onto separate mixer tracks for further processing.
Generally, it's most useful to separate the audio generated from drum MIDI, not the MIDI regions themselves.  But if you do want separate MIDI tracks for some reason, "Separate MIDI Events" should do the job.
    Good luck!

These videos (part 1,2,3) take you through the process:

Basically, you create a multi-instrument in the Environment.

  • Re: Importing of Roland Fantom-S sounds

Hello, complete noob here with a lame question.
Can I import my extra-sweet sounds that were dearly paid for and dutifully placed on my Fantom-S years ago and put them in a place usable by Logic Pro? Does this question make any sense? I had a PC-based system that couldn't handle this at all, and my songs had to use their weak sounds instead of the rich textured instrumental sounds I paid for so dearly...
What are my options - any ideas?

No, you cannot export the sounds and it's not legal to do so anyway.
If you were going to do it, you'd have to either resample the source samples and build you're own EXS instruments for them (a lot of work), or resample the full patches as described above. In either case, Roland & Spectrasonics forbids you from doing this, even if it's for your own use.
Basically - you can't do it easily.
Otherwise, you'll need a tool like Redmatica's Autosampler to multisample each note and dynamic layer - this will automate the process as much as you can, but it's still a very large task....

  • Digital I/O question for LP 7.1.1 w/Mbox2 and Roland Fantom XR

    Hi guys,
I'm a little in the fog here.
For the first time, I'm trying spdif OUT from my Roland XR sound module, to the spdif IN on my Mbox2 (firmware v1.24), to Logic Pro 7.1.1 on my Mac via the USB interface on my Mbox2. I would have thought this was simple.
[I bought this setup last October, and analog has always been no problem. Now I'm trying digital for the first time.]
Anyway, no audio is getting into Logic (I record enabled a track).
So to troubleshoot, I simply plugged some headphones into the mbox headphone output to see if it was even getting to, and out, of the mbox from the sound module. Audio isn't even showing up there. I'm looping the demo songs in the sound module so audio is constantly playing. I check the headphone output on the sound module and of course there's the audio, playing away.
FYI, Mbox 2 system preference on my mac is ridiculously absent of options. I can set my clock to internal or spdif. If I set it to spdif, sure enough, the spdif light on the front of the Mbox lights up, AND only when the sound module is on and connected. But none of this has helped my problem.
Does anyone know what I'm missing here?
Thank you to anyone who can help!
    Aaron

Aaron, I use a Fantom XR SPDIF output to record. The
thing you must remember is the XR's SPDIF will have
to be the Master Clock reference for Logic otherwise
you will get clicks and pops!
Check the settings in the Audio/MIDI setup under OSX.
You will need to set the Mbox2 as the master clock as
this is receiving the SPDIF input. Hopefully the Mbox
will detect SPDIF and accept that as Master.
Restart Logic and ensure you have sample rate set to
44.1Khz as that is what the frequency of SPDIF is.
I'm aware that this may sound complicated but at the
end of the day if you record from a SPDIF source, it
has to be the master clock for Logic.
    Good luck, Rik.
Rik, I was wonder how this would work. When I tried to use
SPDIF with my Mbox1, I could never get Logic to see the
input. I am not sure it was supported. But I can use my
Saffire's SPDIF but I have never set it up as master. When
you mentioned it had to be the master clock, I went into Logic
to see if it showed up as a choice. For syncing Logic only has
    choices for
    internal
    midi clock
    MTC
    Manual
which one should I use to make the interface the master?
Logic only mentions listening for MMC.
    Thanks

  • Trouble Syncing Roland TR-606 with Logic Pro

    Hello.
I had this working before and I dont know what went wrong.
The setup is like this Logic sending MIDI Clock > Midisport Interface > Kenton Pro Solo (set to send Sync24 out of the 'Through' port > Roland 606's MIDI sync input.
When I start and stop from Logic the 606 starts and stops accordingly. Also, when I change the tempo from within Logic the tempo on the 606 also changes HOWEVER the speed that the 606 is running at is always faster than the metronome in logic - It doesn't sync. Is this a problem with the 606?
What am I doing wrong. Would be very grateful for any advice.
    Thanks.

More info: From the Logic 'MIDI Sync preferences' I have set it to send MIDI Clock and from the 'MIDI Sync project settings' I am sending it to the correct port on my interface. The MIDI clock is received by the Roland however fails to sync with it properly..

  • Set-up Roland Octapad 2 with Logic Express 8

Is anyone familiar with how to set up the Roland Octapad 2 Pad-80 with Logic Express 8. I want to use it as a midi controller for some drum samples I have (not general midi drums). But like Addictive Drums or BFD Lite. I have it connected with an edirol e-mux 1x1 interface. But when I hit the pads there is no response. I have it set up in the Audio Midi set up. Are there settings within the Octapad I need to change? I've spent two hours trying to get it to respond and it's becoming a pain in the arse.
    Thanks for any help.

Logic has a built-in midi monitor in the transport bar. When you hit the pads, are you seeing notes listed there?
The Octapad's model was "pad-80", and there's a manual available on the web - http://www.scribd.com/doc/8356768/ Roland-Octapad-II-PAD80OM. If you're seeing midi notes show up and can't change the settings in Addictive Drums to match them, you're going to have to change the notes on the pad -- which will probably be more difficult than doing it in the software.
