Hi Sravan,
Types of Consultants:
The most common question being asked in interviews is ' What are your roles and responsibilities?'.
Before answering the above question, let me explain the difference between Functional consultant and
Technical consultant.
Roles and responsibilities differ from functional consultant to Technical consultant.
<b>Functional Consultant:</b>
Functional consultants are responsible for designing the SAP implementation solution based on the
requirements of your company.
Functional consultants are business process experts.
Functional consultants normally use their process knowledge to calculate the impact of the SAP
implementation on the company's processes.
Functional consultants are thus concerned with SAP functions and processes that will generate the data
and output for business.
Functional consultants interact with end users of the company to gather requirements and based on the
requirements they customize the SAP implementation.
<b>Technical Consultant:</b>
Technical consultants are experts in information technology.
Technical consultants normally assist in configuration of the SAP R3 installation. In many SAP
implementations, technical consultants help in designing interfaces and customizations in R3. Finally, the
SAP R3 technical consultants would be responsible for migration of data from the legacy system to the new
SAP ERP implementation.
Here i will discuss major roles and responsibilities of a technical consultant:
1) Designing technical specification by looking at the functinal specification you have recieved.
Usually senior developers having 3 years or more than 3 years of experience involves in preparing technical
specifications.
2) Developing objects using ABAP workbench tools. That may be a report program or an on-line program or a
custom table.
Remember the development work starts after the technical specification is approved by your team leader.
3) Preparing the Unit test case document.
In unit test case document, we document the results and test cases performed on the developed object.
4) Peer Review
if you are a senior developer you can perform peer review. I.e review the code written by your peers.
5) Working on Problem Tickets
If you are working in a support project, you should solve the tickets assigned to you. Tickets are nothing but
the problems occured in production environment.
The above mentioned are the major roles and responsibilities for a technical consultant

  • Roles & Responsibilities for Junior & Senior consultants(Technical)

    Hi Guru's,
what are the Roles & Responsibilities for Junior & Senior consultants(Technical).
what is the  Role in your project?
How to answer for this question.
what is the  size of  cubes in your project?
    Thanks,
    Madhu.

    Hi ,
In general Functional means, derive the funtional specification from the business requirement document. This job normally is done either by the business analyst or system analyst who has a very good knowledge of the business. In some large organizations there will be a business analyst as well as system analyst.
In any business requirement or need for new reports or queries originates with the business user. This requirement will be recorded after discussion by the business analyst. A system analyst analyses these requirements and generates functional specification document. In the case of BW it could be also called logical design in DATA MODELING.
After review this logical desing will be translated to physical design . This process defines all the required dimensions, key figures, master data, etc.
Once this process is approved and signed off by the requester(users), then conversion of this into practically usable tasks using the SAP BW software. This is called Technical. The whole process of creating an InfoProvider, InfoObjects, InforSources, Source system, etc falls under the Technical domain.
you work on a specific Application area in BW like say FI, MM, PP , etc. you are a BW functional. BW functional would not do any development but they are rather in charge of overseeing whether the specific application functionality is implemented or not. They rather look for the functionality and not for the underlying code.
Functional skills..Knowledge of taking user requirements, and designing the functional and technical specs according to the requirements, determine what customizations are required in the system.Such a person needs strong 'functional background' of the source system and the functional areas involved..example SD,Finance,MM,Utilities,Inventory Mgmt etc.
Sort of skills required by person at design and blueprint phase.
But if you are working across application areas then you are BW technical. They are the ones who do all the development like creating BW objects and activating them.
developing BW objects according to the design specs(FS and TS),data modeling skills,ABAP coding skills for routines and exits.Sort of skills required by person working in development phase of work.
Generally Technical people are expected to have some basic functional knowledge. But if they really have very good functional knowledge in 1 area then they are generally called "Techno-functional".
An SAP BW functional consultant is responsible for the following:
    Key responsibilities include:
    Maintain project plans
Manage all project activities, many of which are executed by resources not directly managed by the
project leader (central BW development team, source system developer, business key users)
Liase with key users to agree reporting requirements, report designs
Translate requirements into design specifications(report specs, data mapping / translation, functional specs)
Write and execute test plans and scripts
Coordinate and manage business / user testing Deliver training to key users
Coordinate and manage product ionization and rollout activities
Track CIP (continuous improvement) requests, work with users to prioritize, plan and manage CIP
An SAP BW technical consultant is responsible for:
-SAP BW extraction using standard data extractor and available development tools for SAP and non-SAP data sources. -SAP ABAP programming with BW
-Data modeling, star schema, master data, ODS and cube design in BW
-Data loading process and procedures (performance tuning)
-Query and report development using Bex Analyzer and Query Designer
-Web report development using Web Application Designer
    Hope this helps,
    Regards

    Hai Friends
I am currently working as an SAP-MM consultant. I want to learn SOLMAN.
    My queries are
Where can I get Study material for SOLMAN ?(apart from help.sap.com)
How SOLMAN helps for a Functional Consultant in implementatin ?
details regarding certification in SOLMAN ?
    Thanks
    Sukumaran.E

    Hello Sukumaran,
There are certainly loads of resource which can help you to get fit for the topic.
I will point out some of them for you:
    <b>Certification Program</b>
    <a href="http://service.sap.com/certification">http://service.sap.com/certification</a>
SAP Consultant Certification -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP Solution Manager 4.0 - Solution Manager Implementation Tools.
This requires you to take the SMI310 as preparatory course which is the SAP Solution Manager course that goes through the intire range of implementation and configuration support provided by SAP Solution Manager.
    <b>RKT material</b>
The ramp-up knowledge transfer material (RKT) consists of role-specific information on a variety of SAP Solution Manager topics.
    <a href="http://service.sap.com/rkt-solman">http://service.sap.com/rkt-solman</a>
Concentrate on SAP Solution Manager 4.0 release and the product offerings for the Solution consultant role. Check the must know section and for a functional insight into the project functionality I'd recommend the tutor <i>SAP Solution Manager in an implementation project</i> and for a methodological insight the tutors on roadmap usage.

  • Role of Time Mgmt functional consultant during SAP Upgrade from 4.7 to ECC6

    Hi,
Could anyone explain the role of a time management functional consultant during SAP upgrade from R/3 4.7 to ECC6.0. Please provide me if you got any documentation.
    Thanks,
    Sunny

"After you upgrade to SAP ERP 6.0, you can enhance the functionality of your application without performing a further
upgrade thanks to a new deployment technology u2013 the SAP enhancement package for SAP ERP. The enhancement
packages simplify the way you manage and deploy new software functions for SAP ERP." - that is the real benefit of ECC 6.0
There aren't any major changes to PTM functionalities from 4.7 to 6.0. I hope your system is already using IT 2006 instead of IT 0005. Under functional role, you are required to configure/test any functional upgrade and manage data.

  • Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance for SD functional consultant

    Hi gurus
Request you to kindly let me know what a SD functional consultant should know about SOX and also its relationship with SAP.
If any guru responds immly it is highly appreciable, as I am in dire need of this information
    Thanks & Regards
    Suddu

    Dear Suddu,
SOX is useful for Security, Compliance, or Audit.
Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) in the United States, to Bill 198 in Canada, to Japan‘s Financial Instruments and Exchange Law (the so-called J-SOX), the current regulatory environment worldwide is one that demands that enterprises take
every step to ensure the integrity of their finances, their data, their processes, and their employees. Central to this is the need to control access to corporate information, functions, and processes and to ensure that there is comprehensive segregation of duties (SoD) across the entire enterprise and at all levels of corporate functioning.
Post Sarbanes Oxley, focus for corporations is more on compliance and security. Sarbanes Oxley has had a major impact on the organizations using SAP R/3 as their ERP. Some of the changes seen in the corporate landsacpe include identifying and documenting processes, implementing controls and safeguards, documenting user access approvals etc. In short, there has been a cultural shift in organizations post Sarbanes Oxley. Below, I have listed 7 major pointers which can help organizations towards better SAP security in the Sarbanes Oxley Era.
    1. Provide users access on a need to know and need to do basis.
    2. Adequately secure programs, transactions and tables.
    3. All user accesses to SAP R/3 are properly authorized and approved.
    4. Segregation of duties is maintained for all sensitive business transactions
    5. All controls and business processes are documented.
    6. Anti-fraud preventive controls are in place to prevent & detect fraud before an audit.
    7. User profiles and roles in SAP are secured and designed to meet business requirements.

  • What is the role of a HR functional consultant in the ESS/MSS configuration

    Hi Guys,
If someone can suggest me what is the role of a HR functional person in the ESS/MSS or EP configuration and what needs to be done to achieve that..
    Thanks,
    ~RJ

I think, HR Functional consultant role should  mandatory for ESS/MSS. ESS/MSS are user interface technologies but behind the scene. It is all about HR FC. In order to learn ESS/MSS you should start base NetWeaver Architecture & Iviews concept.
You will find it more easy since you knw back-end.

    Hi,
We are currently on SRM server 5.5, support pack 11 and planning to upgrade to SP15.
As a functional consultant, what are the checks need to be performed?
Got OSS note's side effect report from SAP which consists of apprx 60 notes that need to be applied post SP15 upgradation.
Could any one share their experience how to assess these OSS notes & their side effects. It would be beneficial if you can share any sample template showing the assessment work done & its validation by Business.
What are the effects on existing business process (new functionalites and enhancements).
And do we need to involve the end user/ Business for performing the integration testing & Quality testing.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Entry level pre requisites for oracle functional consultant

    Hi
    I have done by B.E(Computer Science ) with M.B.A
    (marketing&systems).
Currently I am working for a distribution division that deals with
HP PRODUCTS in a leading IT firm in DUBAI as a marketing executive
I would like to climb up the corporate ladder into segments like
business intelligence, Management information systems or designing a
business structure etc that require expertise in terms of both technical and management like that of a functional consultant
what are the pre requisites or certifications that should be taken
to direct my career towards these fields .
Kindly advise since I would like to direct my career in the right field
    thanks

Hi, I need to choose a product to monitor server accesses and also database accesses, but to monitor our databases I should start audit on them (so I need to stop and start our database) and collect many transactions just to let that tool to read the DBA_AUDIT_TRAIL table, get those informations over the net, insert them into the tool's database (another Oracle database) and then delete them from our databases... !!!
I've read this thread and also this one ( Oracle Audit Vault vs Third Party Tools )
It seems that with Audit Vault I need to enable audit on all our databases and then it will collect audit informations from a central machine, is it right ? Is there no way to collect those informations, reading them from archivelog or in another way ? How much does audit impact over performances on a OLTP database ?
Instead Database Vault seems to provide ONLY :) strong access control, but it seems it doesn't use AUDIT table... is this right ?
What are pros and cons comparing these products ?

    Hi Seema,
The Basic responsibility of a CRM Functional Consultant are
    1. Understand the Clients Business Process
    2. Mapping the Business Process with SAP CRM Process
    3. Collecting the requirements of the client
    4. Analyzing the requirements with respect to SAP CRM
    5. Configuring the SAP CRM system according to clients requirement.
    6. Co-ordinating with technical tem members to reach the technical requirements.
Precisely as a Functional Consultant, one has to interact with the client very often to map the business requirements with SAP CRM business Process.
    Hope I have answered you.
Please reward points if it helps.

    Johnny.

  • Sql for sap functional consultant

    Hi sap consultants,
I have a query related to sql for functional consultant.
My question is what is the use of sql for functional consultant and what is the future prospect
after learning it, means will it help in career growth in sap and also to build my candidature strong.
Please suggest me regarding this.will highly appreciate your replies.
    Thanks in advance.

    Prafulla,
Have a look at some of the blogs collected under SAP Career Blog Links. Your best route to becoming an SAP Functional specialist is to work your way into the support group of the company in which you already work. Experience is more important than the certificate. Get your experience supporting SAP as an SAP CRM specialist first, THEN get your certificate.
If you try to do the reverse, you're signing up for a lot of heartache (see blogs in the previous link page). Whatever you do... do NOT quit your job to sign up for training/certification on the hopes that you'll find a job easily after you are certified. End user experience is better than nothing, but does not necessarily "count" as experience when you're trying to get a job for the first time as a functional specialist.
Only AFTER you've been a specialist for a while does the end user experience add clout to your credentials as you can say " I've experienced the FULL spectrum of SAP" while folks who never had the end user experience seem somewhat lacking by comparison.
So *eventually*, end user experience + specialist experience + certification = more than the sum of the parts.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,

  • HANA for SAP Functional Consultants

    Hi
I have rich experience of 9+ yrs in SAP MM/WM/SD/SRM (certified in these modules) (and over all 16+ yrs) all through implementations and rollouts.
Now I am feeling stagnated in my career; wanted to make it more techno-functional; SAP HANA is a buzz word.
Wanted to move into it after doing certification; but have the following queries:
Will it be a right decision to move into it without any prior BI/BW experience.
Will I get an entry into new projects of SAP HANA.
Does BI/BW experience preferred over other SAP module/functional  experience; in which case it will be a difficult enviro to compete.
I have explored job portals and every one wants prior BI/ABAP/Tech experience.
I am worried will I be loosing by entering into HANA or shall I go further in my logistics area only for explorations.
The market I am working in is US and Australia.
    Please suggest;
    Thank you.
    Kim

    Hi Kimi,
HANA is related to database, there are basically two types of mode in HANA, one is called HANA developer who developes model and another is HANA technical who configure, install and monitor all these stuffs. When it  comes to learn HANA without having prior knowledge of BW/BI , yes this will gives you an advantage if you have prior knowledge of BW/BI , but its not mandatory for you because you have so rich experience in another modules, so i will suggest you to please see these threads which might help you at some extent.

  • Role for Functional Consultant in upgradation

    Hi
I want to know, what will be the role of SAP CRM Functional consultant in up gradation of CRM 4.0/5.0 to 6.0/7.0?
I want detailed answers for this one and also if possible than also give some document or provide link for Up gradation document
I am eagerly waiting for reply. .
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,
First and foremost, take all screenshot of processes in the old version. (Functional)
Well to start with, the main backbone of the upgrade project are the Basis Team, so you will be needing a strong Basis Resource.
Once you define the system, a technical testing is done by them and given the system to Functional Consultant.
Compare the old screenshot with new version screenshot and ensure whether the data is correctly available, this can be random, just the basic and important processes to cover. (Functional)
Meanwhile, the functional consultant is required to develop the test scripts, which will include all the business scenarios which are been used in the old version.
For eg: Test Scripts on  Sales process -->from creating the Prospects to Lead then Oppurtunity Document and then closing the case by creation of Sales Orde Management in ECC.
After testing, it is important in any project to get the sign off from the business team, these are called unit testsing & integration testing sign-off process.
So based on your modules interfaced with CRM system, you will require one consultant from each module, for instance, SD Consultant for SD Module.
One more resource will be needed for Web UI Components to test the BSP pages and all, for this a CRM Technical Consultant is needed to be on a safer side, or even a functional consultant can test depending on his/her expertise on Web UI functionality.
    Hope this helps,
