Roll/event names in iPhoto 9 folder

In previous versions of iPhoto, when looking into the iPhoto "package contents," the rolls/events appeared with the name I gave them in the program iPhoto and they therefore could easily be identified.
Since I updated to iPhoto 9, the rolls/events are identified by the date they were taken... such as 5 nov. 09. This makes searching for missing photos nearly impossible since the photos do not even appear in chronological order! All photos on the 1st of any month and year are followed by all photos on the 2nd of any month and year etc.
Is there any way to have the roll/events appear as the name given in iPhoto or at least chronologically? I'm afraid that if I change them manually, it will corrupt the file.
Anyone have a solution? Many thanks.

I just went ahead and tried manually changing the event/roll names in a small "trial" library and it opened perfectly well.
Where did you change the Event title? In the iPhoto Window? Inside the Library Package?
1. I have too many photos to fit in 1 library and sometimes I like to create libraries with different themes or combine photos from different libraries.
You can have multiple Libraries and move files between them with iPhoto Library Manager.
2. I like to have a back up of my photos which is independent of any software so that I can start over in the event that I would like to use something other than iPhoto one day in the unforeseeable future.
iPhoto stores the files in the Finder, just like you do. In the case of migrating, some apps will facilitate that (such as Aperture which will read the iPhoto Library, for others, File -> Export does the same job.
3. I have had too many software failures to trust them completely.
But you trust the Finder?
Would you know how to write a script, or how to get iphoto to list the "events/rolls" in chronological order ? (For example: 2010.01.09 rather than 9 jan. 10?)
Afraid not. You may be able to do something with Automator.
If it is not possible to have the photos filed chronologically, do you know how to export all the events (which I give a name beginning with the date)?
Select an Event and Export it to an appropriately named Folder. To automate this, again, I suggest Automator.
When I use the export function, I lose the "event/roll" name and end up with a long list of unrecognizable photo files.
Not if you export Event by Event, and check out the Filename opportunities in the Export dialogue as well.

  • No event name is stored in folder "masters"

Back when creating an event, the name appeared to me in a folder inside the folder "masters" and now only shows me dates, but never the name of the event. thanks

    Is there a question there?
How iPhoto stores the files within the iPhoto Library package doesn't matter as you never access them from there.

  • Change Event Name in iPhoto for iOS

I've bought in to Apple's promise of the "PC free" lifestyle with an iPad and the camera connectivity kit. A major problem is the fact that you couldn't manage events on the iPad with the standard "Photos" app.
With the new "iPhoto for iOS", will I finally be able to restore organization to my library? I would love it if I could simply name events and perhaps do a little split/merge here and there.
    Thanks for your help,
    Mitch

I agree. I bought the camera connect kit and was disappointed that I couldn't rename the events at all.

  • IPhoto Folder Names Different Than Event Names?

Hello!  I have used iPhoto since 2007, before Time Machine, and I back up all of my events as I upload them onto a zip drive.  In the past, before Yosemite, when I would go into the iPhoto package contents, I would select the year (2014), and I could easily find the name of the event I just uploaded.  I would then drag it to my zip drive.
Since the Yosemite upgrade, the iPhoto package content folders do not match my event names in iPhoto.  Why is this?  How can I make it so that the originals within the iPhoto package content folder again matches that of my iPhoto events?  In the past, when I have made any changes within Finder, I have regretted it, so I don't think that is the solution.  Just wondering why the event names and the folder names are not matching up any more, and if there is an easy fix to this.
    Thank you in advance!!!

What you were doing was not supported and it changed about 6 years ago.
The supported way to do what you want is simply to export the originals from iPhoto to folders named for the Event. Takes the same time.
File -> Export and set the Kind to Original.

  • Why don't my iphoto event names match up to my iphoto master file names?

    Yosemite 10.10
    iPhoto 9.6
    MacBook Pro 2009
I recently downloaded Yosemite, which has slowed my laptop down significantly. This has prompted me to transfer all large files - photos, movies and music off my laptop and onto an external hard drive (in addition to my time machine backup hard drive).
I was instructed (at the Apple Store) to open Finder then Pictures > iPhoto Library. Then to right click on the iPhoto Library folder and select 'show package contents', this reveals a large list of folders but I understand that the Masters folder is the one to care about with respect to back ups. When I open up Masters I can see 8 folders labelled 2007 - 2014. In each of these folders are other folders housing all the jpeg files.
    THE PROBLEM:
For some reason in the 2007-2009 folders the Master file names match up to the Event names in iPhoto. This is great and makes sense! However, after 2009 everything gets really messed up in the Masters folder - despite my iPhoto Library being meticulously organised into Events that are all labelled. For example, when I open up the 2014 folder the path looks like this 2014 > 10 > 06 > 20141006-214510 > which then houses the jpeg images. It looks to me like these folders represent upload events as opposed to the Events that I organised them into in the front end of iPhoto. WHY!?!
    THE QUESTIONS:
Why is this happening? And can I fix it so that it doesn't happen when I next import photos into iPhoto?
Should I just stop using iPhoto?
What happens if I change the names of the Master folders in the back end of iPhoto to reflect the Event names in the front end? Would it be better to just organise them on my hard drive?
    Thank you

    1. It's not a problem as you never ever access your photos in this way.
    2. If you want to back up your original photos you do this via the Export function: File -> Export

    3. None of this saves space on your HD. To do that you need to move your Library from the HD to the external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    a. Quit iPhoto
    b. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    c. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    d. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    4. That particular Apple Genius isn't.
    As to the specific questions:
Why is this happening? And can I fix it so that it doesn't happen when I next import photos into iPhoto?
It's happening as that is how iPhoto works and there is nothing ti fix. Exporting makes the issue redundant.
Should I just stop using iPhoto?
    Why?
What happens if I change the names of the Master folders in the back end of iPhoto to reflect the Event names in the front end?
You'll corrupt the Library. And it's unnecessary.
Would it be better to just organise them on my hard drive?
    No.

  • Automating Event Name Changes in iPhoto

I am looking for a way to do a find/replace on event names in iPhoto. Does anyone know of any applescripts or actions that will enable this? Failing that, how does one cycle through events in applescript?

Any way to have this behave as it used to in iPhoto 08?
    No
You can backup by dragging the iPhoto library to the external drive or using a clone or backup program (I use Carbon Copy Cloner - http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
If you are "backing up" by copying parts of the iPhoto library you are not getting a backup of the library - you need to copy the entire library as a single entity or clone it or use an incremental backup program that works with iPhoto

  • IPhoto 09 folder structure bug

Let me start by saying that I am a big Apple fan. I have a Macbook Pro (end 2006) running 10.6 with a 30 inch Cinema Display, a 23 inch iMac (mid 2007), and an iPhone 3G and a Nano 5th G. I am an Apple Certified Systems Administrator and was also the first person in Japan to be certified on OS X 10.5 as an Apple Certified Support Professional, however I am primarily an Windows Active Directory/Exchange Server engineer.
I have been using iPhoto since version 06 (end of 2006). I upgraded to 08 as soon as it was released then last year I upgraded to 09. Until recently I had about 18,000 photos in my iPhoto library, but due to the issue listed below I have now switched to Windows Live Photo Gallery on Windows 7 for managing my photos (these are synced using Windows Live Sync to my Mac's Photo folder where I then use Picasa for Mac. Sounds complicated but actually not and it means I can import my photos on my Mac or PC and they are synced both ways. Anyway...
I posted the following Bug Report to: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
If you use iPhoto and don't want to spend days/weeks fixing your folder names and reorganizing photos into correct folders if your library becomes corrupt or you ever want to move your photos out of iPhoto then please provide feedback to Apple so that they know that we are not happy about this.
    Bug Report.
The problem with iPhoto 09 is that the the folder structure inside the iPhoto Library package no longer matches the event names in iPhoto.
Previously in iPhoto 08, when renaming an event in iPhoto the folder structure would also be updated. Additionally splitting or merging events would move the files in the iPhoto Library package's folder structure. This is a major problem for me and many other users on the Apple.com iPhoto 09 discussion forums, and this issue has existed since the beginning of 2009!
I need my photo's folders named correctly for the following reasons:
1). Incase I should ever need to move photos out of iPhoto and to another application or platform, I would' have to spend days or even weeks renaming all the folders.
2). If my iPhoto library ever become corrupt and I needed to recreate it then I would loose ALL my event names (hence the details) if iPhoto doesn't keep the folder names the same as the events.
I have recently spent many hours migrating my photos out of iPhoto and renaming the folders manually. iPhoto really was all I ever needed in a photo management application but with this underling bug/issue I can't trust all my photos to it's library format of storage, but I do hope this gets fixed so that I can migrate back to iPhoto in the near future. Might I suggest that the best way forward for the future would be change iPhoto so that it can monitor folders (the same way Picasa does so, this is open and then gives customers the choice of using multiple apps for accessing their photos).
    Regards,
    Andrew

A bug can be an error or fault in the software but it can also be a design flaw which IMO this is.
No it can't. A design flaw is just that. A bug is when the software fails to works as designed. iPhoto is working as designed. You may prefer it work another way, but that's your preference. Remember you can always use a different product for managing your photos. You're not required to use iPhoto, you know.
Exporting dumps all the photos into a single folder which again doesn't solve either points 1 or 2 that I made.
Yes - if you export the entire Library at once.
If, however, you export each Event in turn (an process that can be automated with either Automator or AppleScript) then it will export to appropriately named folders.
And, as to any issue of corruption, the simple fact is that backing up is the ultimate protection.
What you want will possibly preserve your Event names. But that's all. It won't preserve albums, slideshows, metadata, the relationship between original and modified versions, the non-destructive editing and so on and so forth. All you'll get will be some folder names.
Now that's both your points answered. For the second time.
I'm not sure why there are so many Apple apologists on these forums.
I see, so someone who explains to you that you have misunderstood something, explains to you a better way of doing what you want to do is an "apologist"? Just like your definition of "bug" it's a mite idiosyncratic. And rude.
I am pretty sure that at some point there will be many users who will want to migrate out of iPhoto and when they do they won't be very happy when they realize that they are locked in.
Nobody, I repeat nobody, is locked into iPhoto. That statement is a falsehood. File -> Export and off you go.
we can either sit back and just accept these limitations, anti-competative vender lockins and design flaws or we can voice our concerns to Apple and get things changed for the better of everyone.
Every software has limitations. What you have failed to show is that any of the matters that concern you are actually "limitations". There are no
anti-competative (sic) vender (sic) lockins (sic)
iPhoto works with entirely standard formats. All your files and metadata are easily accessible throughout the OS and can be easily exported.

  • IPhoto will not let me type in event names properly

Just updated to OS X Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.  Now I can't properly name new events or change names of existing events in iPhoto.  After I click on the event name, the program kicks me out after typing 1 or 2 characters.  Sometimes I can't even get in 1 character successfully.   Please HELP!!!  (This is not a keyboard problem - same problem comes up on both my MacBook keyboard and my separate keyboard.)

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file delete the contents the following folder:
    User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Iphoto doesn't seem to search in event names

I'm in the process of organizing everything in events. I've got a lot of events with the word soccer in the title. So i tried to search everything to do with soccer. It only listed a couple of pictures with the title soccer and none of the events. Did anyone else notice this or is it just me.
    Thanks,

    Peter
I've just run a test add very odd words to my Event names, and yes, iPhoto found them with no problems.
Perhaps you need to force Spotlight to re-index: Open the Spotlight Preference Pane and Add your Pictures Folder to the Privacy Pane. leave it there for a few moments - like 2 minutes - then remove it from there and allow Spotlight time to re-index.

  • IPhoto Event names in Finder

It seems like I have a bunch of iPhoto Events which seem to have "_2" in the folder name in Finder. For example I have Aug 16, 2008_2.

  • Changing "untitled event" no longer changes coinciding folder name

I guess this doesn't cause any sort of problem, but is a change I've noticed and just trying to figure out why. I just upgraded to the new iPhoto '09. I recently uploaded photos from my camera and then changed the folder name from "untitled event" to a custom name, as I've done many times in the past. Previously, if I then went to "show package contents" in the iPhoto library, the new name I had changed the event to would also show as the folder name within the iPhoto library. Suddenly that's not happening since the upgrade. My most recent folder was changed, but when I look at that same folder in the package contents, it still just shows the date and not the custom name. Has anyone else noticed this? Again, not a problem, or causing any issues. But I do find it odd that the event name now would no longer coincide with one another.

No one is - and no one is really happy about it - but since you really don't (at least shouldn't) go into the iPhoto library very often it also is not a giant deal

  • Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File - Export - Album name with number).

Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File -> Export -> Album name with number).
Exporting a single Event retains the Event name which is what I'd expect. But highlighting more than one event and exporting it renames the images to Events 001.JPG, Event 002.JPG etc.
I was recently on holidays and had all my events nicely split on Dad's computer but when I went to export it I couldn't retain any of this information. Now I have to replicate this all again on my computer.
It wasn't possible to export the entire library as the external drive was fat32 format an I didn't want all of it. It would be nice to export a bunch of events to someone and have it retain the name.
Does anyone have a work around or will this be fixed at some point by Apple?

  • IPhoto Event Names with Ampersands- Movie ?

I have some videos taken with a Flip Mino that I imported into iPhoto with an event name of "2008 August Mom & Dad Visit". That event didn't show up in my iMovie "iPhoto Videos" browser, but when I went back into iPhoto and renamed the event "2008 August Mom/Dad Visit", it showed up just fine. I wonder if there's a bug in the iMovie project import code that causes it to have problems with event names that have ampersands in them?

Jeffrey, You're a godsend! It was driving me CrAzY trying to figure out one of my event album videos wasn't showing up in iMovie. SURE ENOUGH, I had an "&" in the name. Once I changed it, it showed right up in iMovie! Thanks for saving me from pulling my hair out!

  • Displaying the name of iPhoto library

I have a large number of different iPhoto libraries, and was wondering if there was some way to display the name of the Library in use. I have given them all different names, and can usually tell which one I am in, but not always.
iPhoto insists on calling each one "Library" in the information pane. I've looked through the responses to this question in the iPhoto 5 section (i.e. "can't do it") but, now that iPhoto offers multiple library support, you'd think this would be addressed.
Th causes of my problem are twofold: 1) I often duplicate libraries and then split them by deleting different film rolls from each and 2) I'm getting old, and my memory is not what it once was, so I tend to forget which of the two libraries I've opened and which files should be deleted.
    Any suggestions?

    luba:
Yes if you use iPhoto Library Manager to manage your multiple libraries as you can see here. iPLM adds the library title to the top of iPhoto's window when you go thru iPLM. It will also let you copy albums or rolls between libraries and keep the keywords and comments like this.
I have my workflow setup to always go thru iPLM so I always know exactly which library I'm opening. My memory isn't good enough to remember the last one I had opened.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
