Roll Numbering

Can someone explain to me how the roll numbers are assigned. I am a new Mac user and am transerfering my 5000 or so photos from my PC (Adobe Photoshop Album) to iPhoto. Yet, even before transfering, I have been testing iphoto by downloading new images from my camera. The 3 times I have done this, I have gotten roll #1, 31 and 46. I did, between roll #1 and 31, attempt to transfere some images from months past, and then took them off of iphoto. So this may have created the rolls between #1 and 31. Possible, I admit. Is there a way to reset the roll #s?
Thanks!!!
PS - Is there a good link where there are in-depth instructions on how to use iphoto. Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I agree. At times there is no seemingly rational reason to the numbering. I've worked around that by uploading to a folder first, dating and naming the folder for the shoot, i.e. 11/24/05-Thanksgiving in Alpine, and then dragging the folder into the open iPhoto window. This gives me a roll titled the same as the folder. Everything is by date, no number. It's just my way of mimicking my backup folder system.
If your photos on the PC are in individual folders I'd import by folder to get the rolls to be titled the same. You can click on a roll icon and then in the info window at the bottom of the Source pane rename the roll to anything you'd like. To get the roll to reposition itself in the list you will have to sort by some other value and then go back to sort by fill roll.

  • Iphoto 6 library uses roll numbers and dates when viewing in photoshop

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help me. I'm a fairly inexperienced Mac user but have been using iphoto and photoshop fairly extensively but not for anything too complicated.
Before I upgraded to iLife 06 I could browse from within photoshop by going into iphoto library and then the year followed by the month and date - just what I needed.
This no longer works - infact it brings up photos in some very odd months and days if I browse iphoto library.
However, from reading this forum I have gathered that I need to look in the 'originals' folder to browse photos in photo shop now. Unfortunately though it gives the year and then only roll numbers.
Is there a way I can get it to work like it was doing? Also I would like to back up on a fairly regular basis my iphoto library to an external HD - whats the best way of doing this and can I get it so the organisation is years>months>days etc.
Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

The doc "IMG_0677.JPG" has an embedded colour profile that does not match the current RGB working space. The embedded profile will be used in stead of the working space.
Clicked OK and the image opened.
    Closed PS
Went back to iPhoto and choose that sameimage - double clicked. PS launched but the image still didn't.
What you should have done instead of just closing it is do a Save As being sure to check the box in PS, Embed sRGB color profile, that appears in the Save window. When you do that keep the location and file name exactly the same. That will force PS to embed that profile. As is was, you just opened it and then closed which left the file the same.
Or you can download the Automator application "Embed sRGB Profile" from Toad's Cellar, unzip it, and then drop those problem Original file onto it. It will automatically embed the profile into any image file dropped on it. You can do batches that way.
As far as the locked file, download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This will set the permissions correctly on all enclosed files AND unlock any locked file inside.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Resetting Roll Numbering

Is there a way to reset or specify the roll numbers?

I don't think so. You can rename them by clicking on the roll and then go to the Title field in the Info box at the bottom of the Source pane at the left. You can change the roll title and date if necessary. I upload to a folder, title the folder and then import into iPhoto. This gives me a roll with the same title as the folder. I then delete the folder from the desktop.

Is it possible to change the roll numbers in iPhoto? If so, how?

  • Resetting Roll numbers

I've got about 200 rolls in my iPhoto library. Some time back, there was a glitch in the counting, and iPhoto started to assign new imports from the camera counting up from "Roll 500". So I had rolls numbered 1 - 131, then a sudden leap to 500, 501...
I renumbered these later rolls to numerical sequence, so the last roll in the library became "Roll 199", but iPhoto labelled the next import as "Roll 570", (instead of "Roll 200" as I would have liked).
Is there any way to reset the count, so it picks up sequentially from the last roll number in the library when I import a new batch?
I've tried trashing the com.apple.iphoto.plist in my preference folder with no difference made.

No there isn't. But what you can do is rename the Rolls into something more meaningful than numbers: 'Our Wedding' 'Spring 2006' 'Xmas 2008'.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.

  • Default film roll numbers

When I import photos from my camera into iPhoto v.6 it creates ridiculous film roll numbers, e.g. "Roll 4594735214". Is there any way to reset the film roll numbers so they will start over from 1?
    iMac G5, G4 PMac, PBook   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Not without creating a new library and starting over from scratch. You can always edit the roll number once it's in iPhoto to something more informative that Roll ##. I upload to a folder on the desktop, give that folder a meaningful name like "07/01/06-Pechanga Fireworks" and them drag that folder into the iPhoto open window. That gives me a roll with the same name. Much more informative.

  • What would happen if "roll numbers" were omitted in iPhoto files?

It seems that most of my "rolls" contain only 1 photo each, even when I scan several photos at a time. I don't quite understand the purpose for that category. It seems superfluous. This is my first question, so please don't yell at me.
    Thanks,
    Ol' John

Hi Larry, thanks for coming back.
+How many photos do yu have in your iPhoto library?+
I have 9328 photos in my iPhoto library. BUT this includes many duplicates, and those with the lowest memory will be deleted. As I progressed, I realized that some of my scanned photos would not show up well on a TV screen, so I re-scanned those. My earliest photos
are a few of my parents taken about 1913. The trouble is very few of my photos were dated when exposed, and I have been doing a lot of estimating--even those of my immediate family. Who'd of thought I would be building an album of this size 80 or 90 years into the future? (Forgive the gabby response to a simple question, or just don't read
    past the first 4 words)
+Can you identify the photos you did this to?+
In 2009, 86 photos were removed from their film rolls. Of these, 34 were readable and showed up in iPhoto. They were emailed to me by my daughter and were imported successfully. The other 52, I scanned and they ended up in the photo library file, but
did not appear in iPhoto--these were the unreadable files.
+Can you identify the photos you did this to?+
Yes, just by looking at the originals in each year. I just made an estimate of the images not in film rolls. The following are the approximate number of photos removed from film rolls: yr. 2009=52, 2008=2 or 3, 2007=48, 2006=3450, 2005=similar to 06, 2004 =0, 2003=60, 2002 = about 10. These are in the iPhoto library and show up in iPhoto, except the 52 (above) that were unreadable. I didn't realize how many film rolls I deleted. Do you
still think I'm salvageable? I'm afraid you're going to tell me to start an new application. Would that mean I'd lose all my photo dates? I feel very guilty, making such a mess of my
Photo collection. Thanks again for your help. I hope I live long enough to overcome my errors. I'll be more prompt if you need more information--which will make you cringe.
(not my promptness, but if I don't provide enough information)
    Sincerely, Ol' John

  • MDX: Rolling Numbers Issue

    Hi,
I am having 4 Dimensions in an ASO. [Account, Time, Year, DTS]
Due to ASO constraints, I am not able to put Formulae in Time and Year Dimension.
Now, I have a few Accounts which are calculated as a Rolling Number.
    eg:
    Q1 is further having (Jan:Mar)
Here AC_222 has to be calculated
so that it gets value of previous 4 Quarters.
    2006 2007
    Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
    AC_111 100 200 300 400 20 30 40 50
    AC_222 100 300 600 1000 920 750 490 140
    ie :
    AC_222->2006->Q2 = 100+200
    AC_222->2006->Q3 = 100+200+300
    AC_222->2006->Q4 = 100+200+300+400
    AC_222->2007->Q1 = 200+300+400+20
    AC_222->2007->Q2 = 300+400+20+30
    AC_222->2007->Q3 = 400+20+30+40
    AC_222->2007->Q4 = 20+30+40+50
Please let me know how to proceed.
    Thanks,
    Ankur.

    Hi Glenn,
    Thanks for your response.
    I am using Essbase 9.3.1
And the problem here is not related to DTS issue. What I am trying to achieve here is to find a equivalent work-around of @PRIOR funcationality from a BSO.
I am trying to calculate an Account (here AC_222) which gets calculated by adding the value of another Account (AC_111) for one prior quarter and the current quarter.
I am able to calculate this using PrevMember or Lag... but I am not able to resolve for Q1 where as per the definition, it has to retrieve and add the value of Q4 for previous year to the current quarter.
Please advise. Any help is deeply appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ankur.

  • Numbering of film rolls in iPhoto

When you rename a film roll in iPhoto., the original roll number disappears.  How can I retrieve the roll number?
(In the Desktop & Screensaver pref. pane, the sidebar only shows roll numbers.)  I'm using iPhoto. 5.0.4, and Desktop & Screen Saver v.3.0.1

Yet Software Update says there are no upgrades from iPhoto 5.0.4.
Why should I have to pay for an Upgrade?  I don't understand what is going on here.
Software update will only show the free updates within the same version number and not the paid upgrades. Since you are running Snow Leopard, you could upgrade to iPhoto '11 and other iLife '11 applications, but that would require to buy the boxed retail version from Amazon or eBay. Upgrading to Mavericks, as Old Toad outlined, would enable you to buy the currently sold versions from the AppStore.
The advantage of the newer iPhoto versions with Mavericks: You could use iCloud, Faces and Places, and buy print products from Apple's print products store. Plus many bug fixes.

  • Converting iPhoto 6 rolls to iPhoto 7 events

I'm about to take the plunge and install iPhoto 08. I have hundreds of rolls in my library. Some rolls represent 1 day, some represent many days. All roll titles have been renamed.
I'm happy to acquire the new event splitting functionality on new and imported photos & events, but I want my old rolls to remain 100% untouched.
Cany anyone confirm: upon library conversion, will iPhoto keep my rolls untouched, or will it perform auto event splitting to the old rolls?
If iPhoto will auto-split my old rolls by default, is there a preference I can change before conversion to prevent this from happening?

    Steve:
Larry has a good point in his comment about rolls. If you use roll numbers for identification then you should rename the rolls to something other than Roll XX as that will become Untitled Event. Maybe change "Roll" to "Number". That will preserve the number for your identification.

  • Manually managing rolls in iphoto Library

Hi, I recently shot several photos for graduation. I also have been importing my friends' photos from various websites. Everytime I import a photo into my iphoto, it creates a new TemporaryItems folder in
    I went into users/Pictures/iphotoLibrary/Originals/2009/
-- each new folder only contains one photo.
This makes it really annoying if I want to do a batch upload, etc.
    I went into users/Pictures/iphotoLibrary/Originals/2009/
and created a new folder called "roll 385". (the last one iphoto automatically created was "roll 386" and it skips roll numbers.
I put each of the photos from the over 100 temporary folders into that new roll.
Now iphoto does not know the location in the library. So when I open up iphoto and try to click on a thumbnail, it comes up as a gray square with an exclamation point. How do I re-link the moved source files in roll 385 to the thumbnails?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
If I were to delete my whole iphoto library and re-install iphoto with a new library, would that solve the problem?
Well yes, but a: re-installing iPhoto is not necessary and b: you can recover some of the organisation simply by following the advice above, especially the bit that starts
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function...
Many folks do this because they think that it will make it easier to find photos in the Library for us ein other apps. It's unnecessary and pointless:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Alphanumericals in Student Numbering

    Hi Folks,
I have the following requirement in student roll numbering. e.g., a student has a number Y5ME39.
The first two digits refers to the year the student joined..e.g., Y5 refers to year 2005
Next two digits refers to the program of  study. e.g., ME refers to Mechanical engg, CH refers to Chemical engg.. and next two digits are allotted in sequence based on the admission for a program of study..
I am confused with this requirement....can this be mapped?
Pls let me know the sequence of steps to be carried out to achieve this?
    Thanks
    Regards,
    Sravan

Sravan, there is a BADI for Student Number assignment at:
IMG --> Campus Management (or SLCM) --> Campus Management Master Data --> Students --> Student numbers and object Ids
Here is part of the text of the HELP of that IMG entry:
    BAdI: Student Number Assignment
This business add-in (BAdI) is used in Campus Management Administration (component IS-HER-CM-AD).
You can use this BAdI to implement the following methods:
CHECK: Check Student Number (External Number Assignment)
GET_NEXT: Get Next Student Number (Internal Number Assignment)
    Description
If the business add-in is implemented, the system calls these methods when you create a student master record. It calls the method CHECK if you use external number assignment. It calls the method GET_NEXT if you do not enter a student number.
You can therefore map your rules for student number assignment in the system and, for example, use the check digit procedure and year-specific number assignment.
    Parameters
In addition to the current plan version (PLVAR), the object type (OTYPE) and object ID (OBJID) of the student, the system transfers the start date of the student master record and the date on which the student is created. This enables you to use year-specific number assignment and your own number range object. The student number you enter is transferred to the method CHECK in the field STUDENT_NUMBER. When the method GET_NEXT is called, the student number is transferred to the calling program in the field STUDENT_NUMBER.
In addition, all the data stored in the Personal Data infotype (1702) is transferred. Which data this is depends entirely on the method that was used to create the student. The system does not check if the data fields of the Personal Data infotype (1702) contain data before it calls the business add-in.
    Note
The standard functions of Campus Management ensure that the student number is a unique identification criterion.
If you derive the business partner number from the student number, you should configure your system so that subsequent changes to the student number are not allowed. You can do this by not assigning the authorization for transaction PIQSTU1 (change student number ).
I think this may help you.
    Bye,
    Diego

  • How to re-number Film Rolls

I understand how to change the title and date of a Film Roll, but I would like to re-number the Film Rolls in my library to have them in the same order as their dates. Does anyone know how to do that?
(Reason for me to change the Film Roll numbers: In smart albums, if "View>Film Rolls" is clicked on, the Film Rolls are sorted by roll number, not by the date assigned to the roll. I know that I could sort photos by dates, but then the Film Rolls are not displayed).
    Thanks!

Yes, that's what I did and it did not solve the problem. It seems to be a bug.
Again, here is what I did, step-by-step:
    1. Added 1 picture, created 1 Roll "Roll 1"
    2. Added another picture, created a second roll "Roll 2"
    3. Addes a third picture, created a third roll "Roll 3"
    4. Called Roll 1 "1980", Roll 2 "1982" and Roll 3 "1981" (Order is now: 1980, 1982, 1981).
    5. Changed date of "1980" to 1/1/1980, of "1982" to 1/1/1982 and "1981" to 1/1/1981 (Order is now: 1980, 1981, 1982 in LIBRARY).
    6. When I create a smart album, the order is 1980, 1982, 1981.
So while everything is fine in the library, smart albums don't show the rolls in proper order. They seem to ignor the date assigned to the film roll and keep sorting by the initial order of the film roll as they were created.

  • Rolling Number Counter by seconds

I am looking for the code or how to add a counter but I do
not want it to count anything on web I just want to have it keep
rolling numbers every second up by 1. What this is showing is how
many surveys have been done to date. I would like for it to look
like a counter but it just counts auto. So the web page would say:
2,000,001 new surveys taken so then maybe the next time they open
it would say 2,750,002 surveys new surveys taken. Can someone
please tell me how to do this or the code to place in. A counter
service gives me stats and counts how many times something is hit -
I just want mine to just add numbers without getting them anywhere.
    Thanks for any help.

check the sharedobject and the date class. you can use them
both to "adjust" your counter when users return to your site.
you can use any loop (setInterval() and onEnterFrame, for
example) to "update" your counter while they are on your
    site.

  • How do I find albums in the Finder?  Where did they go?

Just upgraded to iPhoto 06 from 04. When I look for photos in Finder I don't see any of my albums listed. The file structure is totally changed, and I don't even have a folder for 2006 but I do have prior years, which I can then look in to see pictures by date. My 2006 photos can be found only under "DATA" by roll numbers, a somewhat annoying new concept.
Am I missing something really simple here? Why is the folder structure for photos completely changed in iPhoto 06? Why can't I find photos via album in the Finder anymore, and is there any way to fix that? This is a problem for uploading to sites like Shutterfly, for example (it was a total pain to try and do that and and it seems to be a significant deficiency in the program as compared to the earlier version. Any help appreciated!
    PB 15" 1.0 Ghz 1.25G RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi dscott1000,
Yes the folder structure/organization has changed in iPhoto 6. The Albums folder in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder, however, that was in earlier versions of iPhoto has been done away with, starting with iPhoto 5.
iPhoto 5 (and now 6) now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
    Do this for each album.
    Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".

    About the iPhoto Library folder
This is how iPhoto 6 is organized in the Finder:
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.
To help with your Shutterfly program, there is a plugin for iPhoto.
