Rolled back to iTunes 10.7; works, but error code -42408

After just upgrading to Mountain Lion, I decide to trash iTune 11.x in order to re-install iTunes 10.7 in order to be compatible with my music collection on an external hard drive, which was setup in iTunes 10.7.
I think I've done everything correctly, and my iTunes library now does work.
However, upon opening iTunes, I get "error -42408"
iTunes will proceed to work, after I clik 'OK'.
Any ideas on what "error -42408" refers to?
How to remedy?

I don't see why your music collection won't work with iTunes 11, there's nothing particular about media files to particular iTunes versions.
iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297 > Specific Conditions and Alert Messages: (Mac OS X / Windows) - including specific error codes.
Error -42408may be due to residual later versions of support files than those which work with iTunes 10.7. Several possible options:
1) Restore them from another source (e.g., a Time Machine backup). Check https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441424 which requires you have a Time Machine backup. A variant of this is at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20448184
2) Use Pacifist to re-install iTunes 10.7 and let it install the old versions over the new versions by responding "yes" when it asks if you want to replace files.
3) Untested. If you delete the specific iTunes system files the 10.7 installer might just replace them with the old version as long as it doesn't see a newer version in place.
This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:
AirTrafficHost.framework
CoreFP.framework
DeviceLink.framework
iTunesAccess.framework
MobileDevice.framework

quit iTunes
trash ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist
start iTunes, and authorize account
Note, the ~ means the library in your Home directory, not the one at the top level of the hard drive. You may need to use the Go To item in the Finder menus to open that folder. I have posted a method of rolling back to iTunes 4.9 from iTunes 5 or 5.0.1 before and it works for some people, at least. I am posting this again in the hope that people who have problems with iTunes 5 or 5.0.1 will be able to solve their problems by rolling back.
(1) Remove iTunes 5 and QuickTime 7 using the Add/Remove Program function in Control Panel
(2) Copy the iTunes Library file in My Documents -> My Music -> iTunes -> Previous iTunes Libraries to My Documents -> My Music -> iTunes and rename it to iTunes Library (you need to delete the new iTunes Library file there created by iTunes 5 first)
(3) Reinstall iTunes 4.9 (A copy can be found at http://www.5star-shareware.com/Windows/Music/MultimediaPlayers/itunes.html , the last time I visited the link is still active.)
Also save the iTunes 4.9 installer in a safe place as you may need it later.

None of us here have any insight as to the extent (or lack thereof) of the problem. Only Apple knows (if that) how many iTunes installations there are and what proportion of these are experiencing a problem. There have been calls for the iTunes developers' heads since I've seen the release of 4.7 - and all prior indications are that this is not a new event with that version. Some folks have always been getting caught in the fatal error trap with each new iTunes release.
Over the 2005 year, the iTunes users have expanded greatly. As such, I would expect a similar increase in folks coming here to seek help and express dismay. It certainly

to me as if there are greater instances of iTunes failing, but as a proportion of total users, I cannot say if the percentages are, in fact, increasing.
As for a 'forced migration,...the apparent policy has been to provide only the current version of the programs. I realize that folks want a 'fool-proof' upgrade, but any experience with PCs teaches one that without backups, archived earlier version of programs, prudence before jumping into a new version release, and a good understanding of one's system, you are just inviting trouble.
I feel for the folks with difficult problems. I am not blaming them, nor am I willing to blame Apple. I remain here trying to assist them where possible. I do, however, expect us as 'users' to be able to proactively protect ourselves as we so often have been warned by various technology experts: make multiple backups, keep copies of previous programs, learn a little bit about our computers, and exercise a little personal responsibility in keeping them correctly operating - or pay for someone else to manage it for us.

Thanks for a reply. iPod does not support ntfs - you're right. that means it will never work on that. While restoring ipod using iTunes, itunes reformats it no matter what filesystem is there. So the issue is not that. ipod is now on fat32 and it works for a certain period of time, but then crashes and asks to restore through itunes. Resetting/restarting does not help.

You can do it by manually managing music and videos. See:

If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar.
To sync to your iPod go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions

This is Photoshop Elements 8, and I have the original disc with serial number so I can re-install that.
The probelm is I'd need to de-cactivate the serial number before un-installing, and I need to open the programme to do that.
Any ideas?

Okay, I've found that this is a recognised problem.

and all the solutions tell me to find the folder FlexNet Publisher in my library.
Problem is FlexNet Publisher doesn't seem to exist there. Can't find it anywhere on my hard drive.
Gettting down to the end of that page gives me the following info....
The FlexNet folders and files required to run Adobe applications can become corrupted or have permission problems if moved from one machine to another. They can also be damaged through a Time Machine system restore. FlexNet service licensing failures cannot be resolved by reinstalling the application or by using the Adobe CS5 Cleaner Tool. If permissions issues prevent the FlexNet licensing service from launching, accessing data, or communicating with Adobe processes, a licensing failure occurs.
Well it looks like backing everything up using Time Machine may have caused all this problem. Anyone know how to get Flexnet Publisher back?

Authorization - 'we could not complete your iTunes store request. an unknown error occured (-42408)

I was having problems connecting my iPhone 4s to my iTunes, so I was advised to restore my phone as I had everything backed up to my laptop.
I have restored my phone 3 times now and cannot sync anything to it as i need 'authorization' but whenever I enter my apple ID and password to complete the authorization i get a pop-up saying
'we could not complete yout iTunes store request. an unknown error occured (-42408) there was an error in the iTunes store. please try again later'
like I said, I've restored my iphone 3 times now and get this every time and in doing so I have lost everything that was on my phone (that im not worried about) i just want to know how I can authorize my laptop so I can sync music to my iphone.
I am up to date with the latest itunes and all softward on my phone.

OK, I have fixed it here. Here's what I did:
quit iTunes
trashed ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist
started iTunes, and authorised my account
Worked straight away after that !

I tried to update to IOS 4.3.4 today but now my iPad1 stuck in recovery mode with and ITunes cannot restore with an error code of 11?
(With the old discussion groups it was easy to see where other people had similar problems, these new groups seems clunky in comparison)

OK, fixed it by using SHIFT+RESTORE to load the iPad1,1_4.3.4_8K2_Restore.ipsw file in directly from the
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPad Software Updates
folder.
No idea why the upgrade to 4.3.3 failed in the first place and no idea why iTunes was not clever enough to just do it by itself when it detected that there was a problem in the first place.

You haven't said what version of PSE you are using but the general solution to this problem is to re-install the product from your original disks. Have you got the disks for your product and the related serial number?

When I try to open iTunes on my MAC it states I need to update. After updating, it closes and when I open again, I get the same updates. When I choose to not update, I get the error code (-42408). What can I do now?

What is your iTunes version? The error message indicates missing ressources or software conflicts.

Are you able to uninstall iTunes and QuickTime?
You might have to search for the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, which would allow you to remove some applications that you can't from Control Panel.

I am requesting assistance with making purchases in Itunes. For some reason, I receive an error code (-42408) while attempting to purchase music in the Itunes store. Can anyone tell me what the problem seems to be. I have reviewed the posts in Google and it seems like an old problem. Unfortunately, I am on my 2nd ipod because I thought there was an issue with the ipod itself. $150 later, Itunes is still doing the same thing. Please help me...
