Rolling credits font

Sorry for all the questions but its crunch time here and I have several DVD's that I have to finish for Christmas shows.
On Rolling Credits.  What is the secret to the right font to use for that?  I had a very fancy Brush Script font that looks awesome in the still frame but it terrible in the preview and render to highest quality SD.
I then read a post that it has to to with the font selection.  So I choose Arial, pretty basic right?  The m2v file still is all zebra stripped when it rolls.  What is the secret to getting GREAT rolling credits to work in output?
Dan

Yes, we'd all like to see the results, would make it easier to help - not sure what you mean by "Zebra", as that usually refers to the zebra pattern in camcorders to show overexposure. What kind of TV, and connection? If using PURE black and white titles, and a composite cable, it could just be the TV freaking out if it's an old CRT - can't handle the contrast!
As mentioned in the thread, don't use pure white, tone it down to at least 235-235-235 or more and even add a little transparency as well. And keep the font THICK. Thin lines are horrible when scrolling, and if you understand how interlacing works in NTSC, then you will understand why fancy fonts flicker and do weird stuff when scrolled.
Stan mentioned speed being a factor, the reason being - the movement of the title from frame to frame might fall "between" scan lines, and that is why the edges/thin lines flicker. Ideally, if the title moved up exactly one scan line each frame, it would look consistent, but the math almost never comes out that way and we get lines of the text basically turning "on and off" intermittently as the title moves up the screen.

  • Tabs in rolling credits?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do you set up tabs to create rolling credits? I have always had to have credits and names in one continuous centred column, but I have just seen how easy it is to set up properly tabbed text in Premiere, so that the credits are all left-justified and the names right-justified. Surely this can be done in FCP?

If you mean a central gutter, there are two ways built in to FCP that I know of. The first, is using the scroll text generator. With this, you type the title of the person, then an asterisk, then the Name of the Person.
    Director*George lucas
    Luke Skywalker*Mark Hamill
    Indiana Jones*Harrison Ford
The asterisk tells FCP to create an even central gutter which the titles and names align from.
The other way is to use the Boris Title Crawl. Click on "Click for options". At the top in the ruler bar, click. You'll see different tab markers appear, little L's and T's and upside T's and backwards L's. You need to make two of these markers. One that looks like a backwards L, and one that looks like a normal L. One is for left justified, the other for right.
Now simply click in the big grey area below the ruler bar and type your titles and credits, using the TAB key to jump between the two markers you placed. You can also adjust the tabs after your credits are typed in if you want a smaller or bigger gutter. I use 24 point font with a sans serif font like Arial, or Arial Narrow. It comes out very clean and nice.
The advantage to doing it this way, with Boris, is I get less flickering with the scroll. The regular title crawl seems to flicker a bunch. I also lower the opacity of my Boris Title Crawl clip to about 75-80%, making it slightly off white. On a TV you don't really notice it and it looks white.
On a side note, now that i do Title Crawls, I can easily see in movies and shows where the flickering is. Even on pro Hollywood created DVDs! I never noticed it until i had to do it myself. Strange! Start taking notice yourself, but be warned, once you notice it, it's hard to not see it on everything.

  • Rolling credits "flickering"

My rolling credits are "flickering" -- does anyone know why this is happening, and how to fix?*

    Some other ideas:
Are you using a Serif font?  The thin edges of the font can cause flickering.  It's best to always use a Sans Serif font.
Does the frame size of the title match the frame size of the sequence?

  • Rolling credits look bad

I'm trying to create rolling credits using Livetype.
At first, they looked amazing once I imported and rendered them in Final Cut Pro. Much better than the Final Cut rolling titles. But when I tried to change the speed at which they rolled in Livetype, they looked just as bad ad distorted as those Final Cut rolling titles - I believe everyone knows what I'm talking about.
They first rolling effect happened at a speed of 3% (faster) and then I changed it to 2% (slower).
But slower won't work for me. So, how can I fix this?

First off yes, all that text slows things down. You can always break it into smaller projects.
Since you sent the files, I've been playing with a number of different things to improve your credit roll.
First off I believe the font style you selected makes it difficult. I would suggest a rounded or at least a bolder type as opposed to the bold condensed type face, you emailed to me.
That aside here's the things I've done to minimize but not get rid of the shake:
In Live Type I changed your font size from 20pt to 26pt, but I bet it would be even better at 32pt
I also changed your "leading" from 100% to 95%
Once I brought it into FCP I realized your white levels were too high at 100% and using the three way color corrector lowered the white levels to 85%
Then I added a Gaussian blur filter at .4
I also added the De-interlace filter
I also added a gray drop shadow but it didn't make much difference and I probably should have added that in Live Type.
I burned a DVD and checked it on a couple of different monitors and it was okay but certainly not perfect.
A different and larger type face may make it perfect. If you are sold on your current type face try running a quick test on about 5-10 seconds of your credit roll using the above suggestions. You may find it's good enough. If not I would suggest the larger type point size and a more rounded type face.
Hope this helps you in your project.
    Best regards,
    Doug

  • Rolling credits in iDVD slide show

I would like to have rolling credits at the end of my iDVD (not iPhoto) slide show, similar to imovie. Not sure how to go about it. Do I need to move the iDVD slide show to iMovie?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

rolling credits.....Do I need to move the iDVD slide show to iMovie?
Yes, only the only iLife product that can make rolling credits is iMovie.
But consider this- build the slideshow in iPhoto (without rolling credits or sound) use "Send to iDVD" to create a QT Movie (just close iDVD) and import the movie into iMovie, add rolling credits, titles, sounds, and then use that movie in iDVD. Ok, it sounds complicated, but it is really efficient compared to building the whole thing in iMovie......

  • Won't let me edit "rolling credits" title! AGGGH!

I'm pretty new to iMovie, but I've made a few very simple ones successfully, i.e., title and single clip, no transitions, no external sound files, etc.
I've got a 17 minute movie with about 100 clips and a couple dozen titles here and there which are just Centered Title ("CT") clips. At the end of the movie, I have a Rolling Credits ("RC") clip. All the title clips are "Over black". There is music at the beginning of the movie which fades out and music at the end which starts then also fades out at the end of the RC clip.
When I click on the Rolling Credits clip to edit it, iMovie just shows me the info for the last Title clip that was selected, not the currently selected RC clip. When I click a CT clip, it shows the correct info and lets me edit it . . . but not for the RC clip!
I've tried moving the RC clip from the end to the middle of the movie to attempt editing, but same problem---wrong info, can't edit.
I did a "Save as..." and tried loading that new copy of the movie project. No luck.
I threw out the .plist file for iMovie. No luck.
The RC clip has 46 entries (it's a joke) and I want to edit just one thing in it . . . this is SO FRUSTRATING!
I've spent a couple hours on this already. It sure looks like a bug to me.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

For a program that is supposed to be easy to use, iMovie sure is a pain in the butt.
So, I gave up, deleted my 'uneditable' Rolling Credits clip and made a new one and retyped everything. Ok, fine, it seemed to be working ok . . . though the sound seemed out of synch if I watched too many clips in a row. I figured this was just an iMovie playback issue since it reset if I hit pause then play again . . . UNTIL I burned a DVD use iDVD (I set up a theme, etc.) and played it in our DVD player—the sound was off by a second or more! Gag. Lovely.
So extracted the audio as a Apple Support page says to. Then save, burn a new DVD. Play DVD, the sound is synched . . . BUT, there's also a SECOND sound track that's quieter but out of synch!! So, I've got one full volume synched audio track and a lower volume offset audio track.
It seems to me that maybe iMovie didn't completely turn off the sound completely in the original clips when I extracted the audio. BUT, it looks like the volume level on the clips are at the bottom and I can't pull them down any lower.
Any suggestions? (Other than never using this program ever again?)
Can I fully delete the sound from the clips and only leave the extracted audio?
Or is there something else I should be trying?
    Thanks!!!

  • Rolling credits - Copy/paste from Word - straight line

We create our rolling credits in Word, sometimes there are 100-200 student names. We create it in Word, centered, looking great and when we copy and paste it into the Text-rolling credits, it comes out as one line. We then have to manually place a return between names. Is there something I can do in Word, or somewhere that will make it so we don't have to do this tedious task.
    Thanks so much in advance.

The only way I've ever been able to get text looking even close to the way I want it to look is to type it directly into the window in the text generators in Final Cut. Simple centered lines of text shouldn't be a problem - I'm curious as to why you do this in Word first instead of typing right into the generator.
I have had overall better success with text using Title 3D except that it's completely incompetent for 2-column centered text like you see in most scrolling credits.
w/r/t Word, try saving your document as plain text, then open it in Text Editor to do your copy/paste. (Or just use Text Editor in the first place.) I suspect the problem you are seeing is coming from Word's DOC format.

  • Movie won't play now - searching for movie data in file "Rolling Credits"??

I have a movie I made with iMovie (I have v3 or so). I know for a fact it used to play (it's saved as an MPG-2) on my laptop (10.3.9). All of a sudden, when I try to play it, it says "searching for movie data in file "Bounce Across 01"", or "Rolling Credits 05" for another one I have. These are effects I used for the titles, but what could be the problem? I thought once I save it in QuickTime format, it was self-contained - it looks like it's looking for some iMovie files. Why does it need them, why did they disappear (since I know this used to play fine!), and what can I do to fix it (download those data files, and convert the thing to be truly self-contained and not need any external files)?
    Thanks,
    Mike

.. I know for a fact it used to play (it's saved as an MPG-2) on my laptop (10.3.9)..
iM doesn't offer the export as mpeg2..
sooo, how did you accomplish an 'export' in that specific codec...?
the error you're discribing is usually when you try to play an iM-project file with missing parts....
what is the suffix of that file (Apple-I)..?

  • Rolling Credits

When rolling credits over video, the video seems to be "jerky, or flickering" is there something I can do?

I think that Rendering will help, per your description. Along with that, also be aware that one can NOT use the Rolling Preset, and instead use the fixed Effect>Motion>Position and Keyframe that as an animation. You will still need to Render for smooth playback (Rendering is only for smooth playback). With Keyframing, you can "pause" the Roll, and have it come in, and go out, at different speeds. So very much control.
    Good luck,

  • Choppy Rolling Credits

I'm having a problem with one segment of the movie I've created. I imported my film from iMovie 06 into iDVD. The entire movie plays great in the iDVD window and the DVD player preview. At the end of my movie I have rolling centered credits and everything looks perfect.
However, I saved as disc image so I could preview in the DVD Player exactly how it would look once I burned it to a real DVD, and everything plays fine EXCEPT the rolling credits at the end. The other centered titles in the movie (the ones that don't move or "roll" up the screen) look perfectly crisp and clear. But the rolling credits have some weird pixalating effect that makes the letters and words change shape about every 4 seconds. The are readable, but it's choppy and obvious something is not right as you watch it. The should roll smoothly just like in the iDVD preview, but they don't. Any solutions to this problem?

    Hello,
I used to use LiveType to do the layout and scroll. But I found render times slow, so I now use Photoshop:
Open a new document however long you need it to fit all of your text (e.g. 1440x8000px) -
Export that as a PNG -
Import in FCP, reset to 100% (size) and add an animation (for it to scroll) -
    Add anti-flicker filter (max) -
add motion-blur if you like -
    Voila!
Renders fast (without the motion-blur) and looks good.
If you want to be a perfectionist you can actually calculate the" lines per second movement" in order to have a smooth scroll. I don't remember how do do that ... maybe someone else can help. The scroll length should be a multiple of the fps I believe...
    Hope that helps ....

  • Rolling Credits freezing up Motion

    Hey Guys,
Just purchased Motion to try to just do a simple credit roll. The whole credits should take about 70 seconds. I'm attempting to use the Scroll Up Text Animation to scroll them from bottom to top. When I enter the text after about ten credits or so the entire program freezes and I'm forced to kill the application. Is this the proper manner of creating credits or is something wrong with my Motion? I uninstalled and reinstalled twice.
Thanks so much for any help you can give me. It seems like I must be missing something obvious as it seems like this shouldn't be that much for the program to handle.
    Chris

Well after considerable angst we've contacted a friend who has After Effects to get the credits done in a timely manner. For any that read the thread trying to do the same, it was working better by splitting the credits into the different boxes so they weren't all one group of text but it was still harder than expected because then we needed to make sure that they all ran at the same speed and making small changes to one box could affect how the rest looked. Ooof.
Running through the tutorials for some of the other things that motion could do seemed to be pretty interesting and more stable but I wish that Motion would have a Credits template or something to make it easier as almost any short film or indepedent project needs to have scrolling credits and it would be nice to see Motion make it simple.
Thanks for the helpfulness on the forum, I'm impressed with the people that help out and will perhaps use Motion again for something other than credits.
    Chris

  • 5.5 Rolling Credits with gutter?

We run 5.5 on Mac. I see in the title tool you can make them roll or crawl, but is there a trick to formatting the text in the typical Hollywood style with a gutter down the middlle? In FCP you just put a * and the justifications and space happen automatically.
    Cheers,

I like Illustrator and After Effects!
See this old post and the tutorial at post 10. It uses Ann's method here (and Jim's from those old days!).

  • Need help fixing jittery rolling credits for 23.98 sequence

I'm working on an DVC PRO HD project shot 23.98, 960x720. I'm working native 23.98 in Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 and am trying to do a credit roll with both centered text lines, and justified text with the gap running down the middle.
I've created the text template in photoshop and imported into FCP. After applying the motion settings, the file renders out just fine in 29.97 but low and behold, when I do the same motion settings in my 23.98 sequence, the text is jittery as all... Bad artifacts and strobbing.
I tried using the Photoshop file in Motion and Live Type using the unrendered file project in FCP. Tried rendering 23.98 in After Effects. No go. Same ugly results.
Tried the usual in FCP-- appying de-interlace, flicker filter, shift fields, changing the length of the roll and also adjusting the motion points... no help at all. Tried using a smooth rolling exported 29.97 media file into the 23.98. Echk!
I'm running MacPro 2.66 w/ 3GB Ram. Also have the KonaLHe hooked up to my NTSC for preview.
    Help! Thanks!

    MacPro 2.66 3GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yep, tried all that too. Changed keyframe positions, also changed length of the clip. Who knows... maybe never hit the right configuration. I ended up laying the show off to 29.97 and insert editing the 29.97 credit roll. Worked out perfectly although I'm still miffed nothing seemed to work in 23.98 land for smooth credit rolls. Thanks for the help.

Once completed in Encore project plays perfectly with very smooth rolling credit, however once build is carried out either to a DVD disc or DVD folder, the rolling credit becomes very jerky. Really appreciate anyones help on this matter.

I cannot find the Chris/Trish Meyers link I normally use. But down this page, find "When animating text to move vertically—" under the "Best practices for creating text and vector graphics for video" in After Effects help.
