Rolling edits and compound clips...

If I use the Blade tool to make a cut in my main clip, thus dividing it into two parts, I can then use the Trim tool to perform a rolling edit on the edit point I just created with the Blade tool (thereby adjusting the position of the edit point after I create it with the Blade tool).
However, if I use the Blade tool to do the same sort of cut to a connected clip, I cannot use the Trim tool to perform a similar rolling edit to adjust the edit point I just cut into the connected clip. I presume this is because when I use the blade tool to cut a connected clip in two, I am creating two connected clips with independent points of attachment to the main clip. Is that true? Is there any way to perform the rolling edit I want (without having to adust the tail end of the first clip and the head of the second?

My keywords and compound clips have disappeared from Event

Hi.
After a few weeks of working off of a portable hard drive, recently I hooked my laptop back up to my large external drive, where most of my video resides, and found that all my keywords and compound clips have disappeared from their Event. (I have only one event on that drive.)
This is DISTRESSING. I had originally imported a huge amount of clips into FCP X and spent days entering keywords. I also took a lot of time importing sequences from FCP 7 into FCP X as compound clips. These were important building blocks. Now they are all gone.
Looking on the web I've only found one instance of anyone saying this had happened to them, and it was because he had tried to duplicate his currentevent file in the file. I did no such thing. Really I have no idea what I could have done differently to make this happen. All I did was not use my primary hard drive for a few weeks.
Is there ANY way to retrieve all those keywords and compound clips? This is a NASTY surprise, a real blow. I walked around all night feeling depressed at all the lost work.
The other guy who had this problem said that he then used FCP 7 for a day -- and when he reopened FCP X all his keywords and clips had returned. He didn't know why. I tried leaving FCP 7 open all day today in case that would help, but there's no change this evening. Still all gone.
I then tried moving the currentevent file onto my desktop with a slightly changed name (--currentevent), renaming the file in the "backup" folder as currentevent, and opening with that. No better.

Precision editing in compound clips after creating them!

Scenario:
I have a storyline with clips and compound clips and it has a music bed underneath.
After making the compound clips I want to change some "compound "clips"" so that they match the music more precisely. The problem is when I open up the compound clip the music does not play so it is pure guesswork once inside.
I tried to add markers to the CompoundClip on the main storyline but they are not passed through.
Is there a way to do this? I used to wait till the end before creating CC clips but did it as I went along this time - something I am regretting at the moment.

Editing and reusing clips

I want to take small clips from some of my videos and reuse them on new projects, but in order to do that I need to edit the videos down to seperate clips. That's not the issue of it, I can cut the clips of the videos I want to use just fine through editing. The only error is that I'm editing them on a seperate project.
Once I take the clips from one video and delete the parts I no longer need, I'm not sure how to save them as seperate clips to use on the new project as Project Assets.
I was hoping to save each piece to my desktop seperatly, and hopefully importing them into the organizer one at a time. I'm looking through the online manual for a solution, but if someone can give me some instructions directly, it'd be a great help. Thanks.
I have Adobe Premiere Elements 12, if that helps figure out the solution in any way.

Answer will depend on whether SD or HD project clips are to be exported and what the project settings are.
If you have an SD project, you might export your Timeline content as DV AVI standard or widescreen
Publish+Share/Computer/AVI with preset for DV NTSC Standard or DV NTSC Widescreen or the PAL counterparts.

Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with preset MP4 - NTSC DV Standard or MP4 - NTSC Widescreen or the PAL counterparts.
If you had a HD project, you might export your Timeline content as
Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with preset MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30 or its PAL countepart or M2T 1920 x 1080i30 or its PAL counterpart.
With more details, we could fine tune the information.

Missing Compound Clip

I created some compound clips in a project that I am currently working on. After editing another area of the project, I discovered that a few of the compound clips appear to be blank. The clips have a large compound clip symbol that I can see but nothing plays - no audio or video. The clip name appears on top of the clip in the timeline but it does not show up in the index. I'm not sure what I did to cause this. It happened before and I just hit undo until the clip came back. I didn't catch this in time to do that. Would editing the compound clip in the timeline without expanding it cause this? I really don't want to re-do all my work.

The compound in the event viewer is also blank. It is the original, unedited clip that still plays. My fault for not understanding that. Here is what the compound clip looks like in the event viewer.

Adjusting length of a compound clip

When I edit a compound clip and change the length - either longer or shorter - it presents a problem. If it's shorter, then black frames appear at the end of the clip. If it's longer, then frames get cut off. Am I missing something? Is there a way to update the length of the clip to avoid this issue.
What I have been doing when it becomes shorter, is to cut off the black frames at the end. When it's longer, I have had to break apart the compound clip items and readjust the last clip in the compound sequence.
This can't be the way it's supposed to work. Anyone have some pearls of wisdom?

Like Craig, I usually rely heavily on Levels (take his comment on NOT using Auto Levels seriously), and also Shadow & Highlight (with the Auto function turned OFF). Then finally, probably a bit of Fast Color Corrector. Be prepared to go back up the Effects and tweak the first two a bit. Note: the order that Effects are applied can make a world of difference. I use this order: Levels, Shadow & Highlight then Fast Color Corrector.
Note: the best results for color and density grading will be on a calibrated NTSC (or PAL) CRT monitor, run through an A-D unit via FW. If you are doing this in the Program Monitor, I'd strongly suggest testing carefully in whatever player you will ultimately use with the same monitor that will be used.
I find that setting the Program Monitor to Quality = Highest and the Magnification = 100% gives one about as good a display, as they will get outside of the use of the calibrated external monitor.

FCPX 10.0.6 appears to have bugs with Compound Clips

Just a warning -- I upgraded to 10.0.6 and am finding annoying problems with the handling of Compound Clips. After any non-trivial editing of Compound Clips, FCPX will just stop rendering most of your video. You will just see a black screen, occasionally with some of your titles or shapes, but the bulk of the video is suddenly not rendered any more. Sometimes you can see it briefly in flashes inbetween black screens if you frame advance with right-arrow. But the only way to get out of this situation that I have found so far is to completely exit and re-enter FCPX. Which is really tedious and annoying to have to do this every time you edit the contents of a Compound Clip.
A secondary note: Beware -- they significantly changed the behavior of Compound Clips. Compound Clips are now "linked" so if you aren't aware of this change and do something like copy and paste a Compound Clip, then innocently edit one of the pasted Compound Clips, you will unknowingly change them all. Perhaps a nice feature, but if you don't realize this change was made, and you go about doing what you used to do, you will waste some time because you will destroy all those linked Compound Clips since you didn't know they are all now linked. Kind of amazing that they would just change the behavior like this and make the new behavior the default. If you're being nice to your users, you usually try to make things work compatibily with how they worked before, requiring you to do something different to get the new behavior. I guess I learned that I better read the release notes carefully before upgrading because who knows what behavior may have changed.

After spending some time on the Phone with support, we concluded that this FCPX project has been corrupted in some unrecoverable way which caused the black screen problems with Compound Clips. I will need to rebuild the project from scratch. Whether it was corrupted by the new version or it is a coincidence that it became corrupted right about the same time is not known.

Copy and Paste doesn't work inside compound clips

If I have two compound clips, when I try to copy some clips from inside one, then open the other compound clip and paste, nothing happens.
However, if I try the same on a project timeline paste works.
This is really annoying as I cannot move a clip from one scene to another when I have set up my scenes as compound clips.

They were created in 10.0.8.
Are you definitely going into two separate compound clips?
For example, If I explode one of the compound clips on a timeline then paste works again. That still means I need separate projects for each scene which is a pain.
What I would like in FCP X, is to be able to have more than one timeline open simulataneously, so I can drag relevant clips between them. I am finding with a documentary that I am editing, where the story is not obvious and scripted in advance, that developing story idea sections as compound clips is really incovenient. I often realise that clips there were in one section work better in another. This was much easier in FCP 7 where you can open two timelines and drag between them.
I hope apple add the ability to open multiple timelines.

Compound Clip changes edit

Hey gang,
When I make a compound clip out of a 1-minute sequence, it seems to change the edit-- specifically, one of my cross dissolves now overlaps onto another, and it pushes everything aside, adding an extra 7 seconds to the total duration.
Anybody else experience this? Any ideas on how to solve it?

Roll edit one side of clip

It has been a while since I used FCP and I forgot a short cut that I love to use. I want to roll one side of a clip so that it ads frames to the beginning of the clip. I want to make the change in the Edit window. Is this too vague or does anybody have some suggestions?

To do a roll edit in the Timeline:
1 Select the Roll tool in the Tool palette (or press the R key).
2 Select an edit point between two clips.
If linked selection is on, the edit points of linked items are also selected.
3 Do one of the following:
•Drag the edit point left or right.
As you drag, the Canvas shows a two-up display with the Out point of the outgoing clip on the left and the In point of the incoming clip on the right.
•Type + (plus) or – (minus) followed by the number of frames to add or subtract from the current edit, then press Return.
Doing Roll Edits in the Viewer
Final Cut Pro allows you to perform roll edits in the Viewer by setting In or Out points while the Roll tool is selected.
To do a roll edit in the Viewer:
1 Open a sequence clip in the Viewer.
2 Select the Roll tool in the Tool palette (or press the R key).
3 Do one of the following:
•Drag the In or Out point along the Viewer’s scrubber bar to roll the edit.
•Press I or O to set a new In or Out point.
Look in the Timeline to make sure the roll edit did what you expected.

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to DVD. I am trying to edit the film clips using Premier Elements 4.0. so I can reburn the films on a single BluRay disc. Some of the film clips copy into the project but others don't. I tried copying the VOB filed onto my hard drive and then changing the file extensions on the VOB files to MPEG but this was no help. Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What do you have now.....
What computer operating system do you have?
We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
Does the above scenario apply to you?
The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
3. Go to
Get Media
"DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
"Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
Should work fine.
Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.

How do I edit a merged clip in Audition, that was created in premiere to correct the synchronisation, and have it all updated to the premiere clip?
I have tried several tutorials but these either:
- show correction in premiere sequence (which is not practical; given the huge number of files we have)
- or show the editing in audition of a sequence, not the clip.
We have started merging audio and video (removing the original audio during merge) but some of the merged clips are out of sync, so we need to correct manually, BUT we want to correct the merged clip, which may or may not end up being used, so we do not want to take it to the sequence as all we are doing is prepare the synced files for editing.
Any idea how I can correct the synchronisation in Audition?, when I right click on clip and select "Edit in Adobe Audition" I get a list of files but not a multitrack session where I can see my video and audio tracks.

if premiere pro doesn't sync your footage properly, and you have a huge number of files, you may want to look at pluraleyes. there is a demo, and if it works properly, it would save you time to have it done right the first time, instead of tracking down random merged clips with bad sync.
premiere will either export a complete sequence or "edit clip in audition". the edit clip will create a copy of the original audio and open that in audition. there is no dynamic link, its just an audio file open in two programs at the same time. since there is no dynamic link, its not possible to bring merged clips into audition.

this doesn't give me much hope that audition or any other adobe program outside of premiere will help you fix the problem merged clips.

How can I edit a video clip in PE and take it out of PE to use elsewhere?

I want to add edited video clips from PE to use in my photoshop slideshow. I would also like to use the edited clips in another programme, but I only get a file that can only be opened in PE. I have PE 4 and Photoshop 6.on a desktop PC using Vista.

I have video thumbnails from my video camera in My Videos folder. I would like to edit them individualy and return them to my folder as thumbnails again.
I hope I have explained my needs properly. I have made a slideshow including video on photoshop, but I get lost with it on PremE so I have kept to the job on PhotoEl. It seems to work for me apart from the problem of editing the video clips. I have added audio to the slideshow, but when it gets to a video clip I lose the video's sound. I would like to keep that rather than the added audio (music) that plays over the stills.
As you have no doubt realised, I am a beginner and a pensioner. Would senility be an excuse?

Multiple motion edits and opacity edits were made. When project manager moved the project, the actual video content of 0002.MTS to 0005.MTS was missing(source clips are still there but they were playing and working as part of that 0001.MTS timeline clip before). Those parts of the 0001.MTS clip in the timeline were Danger Striped and can be relinked but now have no edits anymore. The edits are apparently only linked with the original 0001.MTS source clip but extend beyond the actual range of the actual source clip. At the time I thought it was weird that premiere displayed the whole string of clips as one (with one name and no breaks) but it all works in the original project file but cannot be transferred to another location without multiple clips showing Danger Stripes.I need to move it and preserve the dozens of motion and opacity edits linked to the apparently oversized timeline clip. HELP!! any ideas?
I did not nest any clips or sequences, premiere just seemed to combine the clips under one name when I moved them to timeline.
