Rolling, Jumping finder file lists on OS 9 clients

Weird. 10.4.8 Server with some Tiger clients and some OS 9 clients.
On shared volumes on the OS 9 clients the files lists in finder windows roll up and down and sometimes jump. So much so that sometimes it's difficult to select a file in the list. Or while creating/changing a file name, the list will suddenly jump so that the curser ends up on a different file.
Anyone know what's going/how to fix?

Yeah its clear. I have had the same issue with OS9 clients on a 10.4 Server. I assume it was some update to improve the refresh time of an OS X finder client but it has created this jumping for OS 9 clients. I only have 2 clients on 9 out of 50 so I'm about to get them to OS X finally. That would be the best fix at this point.
What i have done that works as a temp fix is find the jumping files and just replace or copy them back to the server from the 9 client. there may be more then one jumping file and if it's a large folder or a constantly updated folder by OS X clients you'll be chasing your tail a lot. If It is a folder with minor content changes and even only for the OS 9 users you can fix it and most likely not have to do it again for some time.

  • Finder File Lists

Just a quick question .... is there a way to get the finder to list folders before individual files?
    TY

Thank you .... Kappy and red....
@ Kappy: I'll look at some third party software I guess, Don't mess with the Finder Ui much ... maybe just this once.
@ red_menace: I too have used that approach, was really hoping to find something that acted globally on my HD.
When I look in a directory and see Folders and individual files interspersed - well ... it's difficult at best to find what I'm after. Somehow it seems intuitive to me if folders are sorted above files (maybe documents is the term I need here).
    Anyway - thanks again

  • Question about Finder file listing order when sorting by "Name"

I quite often add a suffix to some of my file names when I save them so that I can keep a complete history of changes. For example, I usually add "_000" at the end, and progress to "_001" through "_009". However after "_009" I don't increase the next digit to "_010" but instead, after "_009" comes "_00A" then "_00B" on to "_00Z" and then to "_010". I have been doing this for a while now (several years) and it has worked well for me.
I have noticed in the finder window, when in "List" view a file ending in "_00A" is listed lexicographically before a file ending in "009" instead of the other way around.
I think that this is due to my UNIX Locale being set to LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
    1. Is this a correct assumption?
I would like it to be listed in POSIX order.
    2. Is there a way I can make just specific folders list file names in POSIX order?
I was thinking of changing my Language to POSIX using the terminal command:
    $ export LANG=POSIX
but this may have undesirable effects with the rest of Mac OS X.
    3. Is there a finder preference (plist item) I can change so this just changes the listing order to POSIX? (I have no problem if all Finder windows use this sort order for file names.)
    Thank you in advance.
    Jeff Cameron

I don't know of a GUI way to change it or if you unix trick will work/do anything, but the Mac OS has always sorted that way, if I'm understanding you correctly. It looks at the entirety of the naming and puts 2 immediately after 1 instead of putting 10 there like Windows does (and Alpha comes before numeric).
I don't think the unix underpinnings changed sort order, but I may be remembering wrong. It's been a long time since OS 9. That's why I don't think the LANG switch will work.

  • Trying To Use Find While Filtering Out Unwanted Files Listing In Searches

    Hi!
I'm trying to use Find to list files made or created or changed after a certain date, but I can't keep zillions of unwanted files popping up. I want to list all the files created after June 23 and it does that well -- including hundreds of "webbookmark" files too. I used "!" like Help said to supposedly block that term from appearing but then nothing shows up! I'd truly appreciate any help!

    Hey,
if you know the name(s) of the root folder(s) you want to access (eg. by making a note on the Windows side) then you can make them appear by just doing Shift-Command-G in Finder ("Go to Folder…"), and entering the full path to the required folders.  You can then navigate all the contents as normal.

  • How Can I Find a Listing of ALL Files in a Particular Logic Pro 7.2 Song?

    Hello,
Is there a quick and easy way to find a listing of all files that belong to a particular Logic Pro 7.2 song? I am trying to clean up my Logic folder that has no hierarchical order with files in their respective song folder. Just a littering of files that belong to various songs.
    Thanks

Consolidate files of selected songs while using copy on all should do it all for you, but create a lot of redundant data if your sessions share many files. It's safer though.

  • How does one change the font size for folders and/or file lists in the Bookmarks Library?

How does one change the font size for folders and/or file lists in the '''Bookmarks''' Library?
Since the upgrade to version 9.0.1 of Firefox, the Bookmarks feature changes are confusing me. They seem to be confusing themselves as well. The list of bookmarks has changed. The font size is so small that my aging eyes cannot read it without fogging the screen with my breath. Some folders are out of alphabetical order (where I know they were previously good), and some are missing altogether (folders to which I frequently add references).
As for missing or deranged files or folders, was there something that I should have done or now need to do to recover those after the upgrade (or before)?
    With regard to font size,
    1. there is no “Edit Bookmarks” or like option to edit the list in this version
    2. the “zoom” option in the “view” list of functions is greyed out when in “Show All Bookmarks” window
    3. expanding the browser window has no effect on font size
    4. “Preferences” settings for font size has no effect in that window either, including advanced settings
    5. “Help” offers none that I can find.
    Can any of you Help?!?

  • Computer Contents in File List

My file list now contains all of the items and files in my

network. How do I delete this from the file list.

That's normal- it belongs there. ignore it or use when it's
    handy.
It's use is to find and copy files that are outside of the
    Local site folder
    while staying inside of dreamweaver.
If it wasn't there- you'd have to go to the Desktop or My
    Computer, browse
to the file, copy it, browse to the Local Site Folder, paste,
    then go back
    into dreamweaver.
suggestion- go to the Help menu-->Using

  • Find files and establish links to help organize my computer

I was advised to post this here instead of where I initially posted it:
Like a lot of people, I have accumulated eBooks at different times and they are scattered all over several drives. I want to organize them. I am trying to remember how to make a UNIX script to do what I want. Then I can put it on a cron so that it will automate the process for me
    What I want to do:
    Find all .epub files
place a link to those files in file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/
If this can't work then even to find and move all of the .epubs would work; however, I would prefer to use a link because I also want, with suitable alteration, to use the script to organize my pdf files. Some of those pdf files need to be left where they are because they are manuals; but, again, I would like a central list so I do not keep looking, online, for files I already have.

Smart Folders is the way to go, however, to find files, use "find".
To find in your Home Directory and any attached drives:
    find ~ /Volumes/ -iname '*.epub'
    To create a symbolic link:
    find ~ /Volumes/ -iname '*.epub' -exec ln -s {} "file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/" \;
Not sure if find will look in "file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/" (which you don't want), but if it does, we can exclude this directory with the -prune option.

  • How can I find a list of printers that will work with my iBook version=2.2?

I need to print out a book I wrote on my old iBook...got rid of my Epson Stylus 62 and can't find a list on the iBook that says what other printers it will take. I have access to an old Dell 922 and am wondering if that can be hooked up and used to get the book printed without having to go to get info recovered and pay a lot of money. Thanks for any help!

    Oldmac
You should be able to connect  the Dell 922 (c.2004) to your iBook Jaguar(c.2002) - you may see the problem... finding a driver for the Dell922 may be a BIG obstacle as Jaguar pre-dates the Dell922 - thus, no built-in driver in the OSX  - it may be that some Dell driver will work but I would not bank on it.
    Alternatives:
What is stopping you from connecting iBook to the Internet?
What Mac or PC do you have now? Connect via network cabling? > transfer file (what Application?) > print ?
put your file on a thumb drive and transfer it to another's computer - friend, FedExOffice Store, etc.
    Think outside the box...
