Rolling my own kernel off a fresh install

Hey folks!
I just recently acquired an Acer Aspire One. In a vain effort to get the wireless working off of a fresh install I thought that I might compile my own kernel version 2.6.27 (and I hoped that the ath5k driver would automagically work). Sadly I ran into some issues, and owing to my ignorance of Linux kernel compiling magic I have posted here to the Newbie forum:
So I get to the point where I need to install the kernel (after compiling from source), but I lack the program mkinitrd. I did some research and apparently we use mkinitramfs, which the fresh install also doesn't come with.
My questions are thus:
1) Is it possible to make an initrd on a computer which the initrd is NOT intended for?
2) Why is it that a fresh install doesn't come with the stuff required to recompile a kernel, I would think that might be important?
I am thankful for any help!

Hey awesome, this looks good.
If a package is included in the "Core" repository, does that mean it comes rolled up with the Arch install?
EDIT:
I see now that this is the case. From the Official Arch Linux Install Guide:
The core iso (~300MB) is a live environment which contains a snapshot of the entire /core repository. Packages are divided into 4 categories: BASE, SUPPORT, DEVEL and LIB. RAID/LVM are fully supported; all necessary packages are included within /core. Installing from a medium created with this image results in a completely functional GNU/Linux system, without any frills, expecting to be used from the command line; the Linux kernel, GNU toolchain and a few extra modules and libraries. This image is ideally suited for those who have a rather slow or nonexistent internet connection on the candidate machine, making an FTP install unfeasible. The name of the iso will be "archlinux-i686-2008.xx-x.core.iso", according to your architecture

  • Constant Kernel Panics on fresh install of 10.8.2

Ever since upgrading to 10.8.2, my Mid 2010 MBP gets Kernel Panics related to the NVidia kext at least 5 times a day. When will apple finally fix this?? Here's the full kernel panic. It's the same thing every time. I have no third party .kext installed. I've blown this out and installed from 10.8 disc twice. It never starts to KP until the 10.8.2 update is applied. This is not hardware related since I did a fresh install of windows on the bootcamp partition as well and it runs just fine without crashing. On 10.8.2 it crashes without any peripherals plugged in except the charger and ethernet cable. I'm not ever taxing the system. It has safari or chrome open and that's it.

Except there are no specifics that say what the problem is they're looking for.
Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.
This precisely is what has been happening with my system. I took it in a few months ago to a Apple authorized service centre and was denied coverage by Apple citing it wasn't the correct "cause" they were looking for; stating the problem originated in the CPU and not the graphics - but if we look at the problem they state - intermittently freeze of stop of video display, that is the same issue. Since then I have been back and forth with Apple trying to get a straight answer as to what the problem is with my machine, the exact specific of what they "cover" (they seem to make it up as they go along) and how my issue isn't the issue they're covering. Would also note my system has degraded to the point it is completely unusable and is now a really expensive paper weight. I took it in a second time to a different place, and they couldn't even diagnose the issue - Apple now cites they can't cover it because they don't have an error code.
Anyone who has been following this issue would also note how many times and how much the wording in that tech note (TS4008) has changed since it was first posted around September 2011 and would remember the second note (something about the display going black randomly) that has since been merged with TS4008 and now has been removed altogether from the note.

I am about to refresh with Lion for now.

  • G5 won't start up, did fresh install...

I've done a lot of searching but can't figure out what to do next. The problem originally started when my G5 only booted to the blank blue screen. Followed the directions off this website one by one, and finally fixed it (By booting up in Single User mode).
However, after a few restarts the problem persisted and could not be solved with the fix it doc on this site anymore. Ran Disk Utility, Hadware Test, all fine. Did Archive and Install, but this time, once I shut down it got stuck on the ticking wheel on the grey screen.
So I backed up and did a fresh install, erasing the drive and reinstalling OSX. Same problem! It boots up on the install, but won't restart. My clients are getting impatient, please help!
    Many Thanks,
    Chris

Tried all of your suggestions to no avail, but still some great stuff to know.
I had already removed everything except necessary RAM and on a hunch decided to swap out my video card for a friends with my same model. Booted no problem. It was the damned video card.
Makes sense as anything that gets stuck on a boot up off a fresh install would indicate hardware issues, I just never thought a video card going bad could do that! Grrr... Oh well. Thanks for the help! ATI will be getting a call from me bright and early Monday morning, at least it's still under warranty.

  • After installing Mavericks my iMac has become increasingly unstable with various applications crashing along with some white screen, kernel panic-style restarts. This has even continued after a fresh install, what should I do now?

Following an Apple Support Team member's advice, I retrieved as many files as I could and erased and repaired the HD before completing a fresh install from a bootable USB. Once I restored all of my software I set it backing up to Time Machine over night only to find that it had crashed and restarted over night before that had completed. I attach the crash report below:

  • Installing own kernel...

I have no problem git cloning my kernel of choice and configuring. My question is when compiling a new video drivers or any other package that might be dependent on Linux sources. I usually use the /usr/src directory. I am having trouble with the PKGBUILD on kernel26zen-git. It fails at installing after compile.
Is there a global symlink ?Like there is in Gentoo? Where, I can custom build my kernels, and not have to worry about when I install new Nvidia drivers from there website. I am just greatly disappointed in these custom PKGBUILDS, and I don't need a initrd package. Are there any special parameters I need to be aware of... such as any global symlinks?
Am I going to have problems install drivers from Nvidia's site if I decide not use the kernel26 packages, or any other package that compiles against the kernel sources..?
Here's the error I get from the PKGBUILD
==> ERROR: Failed... Your source tree might be broken. Run 'make mrproper' in src/kernel26zen to clean it up
    ==> ERROR: Build Failed.
    Aborting...
Error: Makepkg was unable to build kernel26zen package

The PKGBUILD seems to be pointing to his own kernel chanco, shouldn't be a problem.
@ OP: did you try the suggestion the error is giving you? I.e. a
    make mproper
    in the source tree?
I was going to ... but I decided on a static kernel. And since I used to write ebuilds for my own packages, I decided to take up the task of writing my own PKGBUILD /w a static kernel, using the zen-sources git tree.
BTW, am I going to be running into any problems in the future when running updates through pacman /w the way my kernel is setup? That's ,my main concern, since I am using a static kernel.  Though I do use my own video drivers from the Nvidia site, so I am not worried about video drivers.
I guess I became accustomed with gentoo, that so much of the transition has been different.  Though I like Arch and its ABS, and AUR, plus there are lot of packages available.

Fresh install of trial version of Captivate 8 on OS X 10.9.3 - no previous version of Captivate on machine.  I've got lots of crashing to desktop problems right off the bat.  Is there a patch available?  I work at a University and we're evaluating for online courseware - my last experience with Captivate was 5.0.  Anyone else experience this with the trial download?

    Hi there,
There is no difference in terms of usage and features between a trial version and a licensed version.
Could you tell me do you get any specific error message when it crashes, or does it crash while using a particular feature, or is it random?
Can you also try with a different user account (admin) on your MAC, check if it behaves same there?
    Thanks.

I want to reinstall an app fresh install from iTunes not from my iCloud, I go to manage storage I stop backup and delete app by turning green button off, but when I ask to download it again from iTunes it is only downloading it from my iCloud.
    Please assist
    Thx

You don't really delete app that way, that way to stop backup for that app in icloud.
You need to delete it from your home screen and then while it still will look like download from icloud - app will start fresh.
However if app uses any account sign in the stuff that is attached to sign in will come back, so if you do not want to you need to use
    fresh account as well.

  • Frequent Kernel Panic - Fresh install

    Hi there,
I have a 15" MBP retina late 2013. I have done a fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.2 (erase disk and install)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
    2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
I am suffering from Kernel Panic and the intensity seems related to the intensity I use the machine.
For example, just browsing on the internet, Kernel Panic may happen maybe once a day... but if i start more processing intense activity, it will be within a few minutes. For example, if I connect 2 external screens via Thunderbolt, it will kernel panic within seconds. Another example, if when I am installing iMovie and iPhoto, everything goes ok during download, and then within minutes of the install, it will go kernel panic... this is valid for any install from the app store, as soon as I launch 2 or more... but even with 1... it will just take a little bit longer to get the kernel panic.
I have attached the last Kernel panic log while I was downloading some apps from the App store.

    Thanks Linc Davis,
Can I ask you to share the reasoning leading to hardware issue diagnostic? This is because I will need it to argue with Apple Support. I have spent countless hours on the phone with them, performing many diagnostic tools (disk utility, Apple Diagnostics) and then under the guidance of senior tech, I have install, re-install, formatted, usb-install... Apple support seems focus on a software issue but when you have formatted the disk and done a perfectly clean install, what software issue is left ? I would also intuit a hardware issue but unless I can pinpoint exactly which hardware I make them change, I am just afraid it will not change much on my current status.

  • Why is Mavericks running so slowly after a fresh install on my Macbook Pro?

    I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro.
Towards the end of 2013 Mountain Lion had been running very sluggishly, and I was getting the spinning beachball of death all the time, so I decided to do a fresh install of Mavericks. I wiped my whole HD using disk utility and installed Mavericks from a flash drive.
I then installed Microsoft Office 2011 from the original DVD and set up Mac Mail to work with my Gmail account etc. All very standard. I also installed X-Code and various other things related to my work, but nothing crazy. My HD is only half-full (I have 141 GB of free space).
Despite this, everything is running really sluggishly (especially when MS Office programs are open) and I have to watch the beachball of death spin for about 10 seconds every minute.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Very slow Mac, compared to when running a fresh install

I was wondering if anyone could help me diagnose the reason for my mac being so slow. (Eg 1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds) And why it takes a long time to load a lot of things. I have restored this from a time machine partition, so I believe something has transferred over incorrectly resulting in this general sluggishness of the system.
I have tried disabling all Startup items, disconnecting all external devices, but to no real success.
Here's the boot log of the system below, where I've noticed it hangs after posting FIPS success.
I was wondering if anyone could point me to any of the things that look suspicious? I've tried, but I haven't been able to find out what is causing it, as I believe the process that is causing this sluggishnesh begins at startup.

    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Macbook pro i7 - Mid 2010 - Lion 10.7.2 fresh install CRASHES

    Hello MacHeads like my self,
I have a macbook pro - mid 2010 (i7, 8gb ram), I had a major disk corruption a few days ago (WD 750gb 7200rpm), bunch of bad sectors and I belive it took place becouse I had the crazy black screen failiur going on for a few weeks until apple released the update to fix that, but I had to hard reset the macbook several times and that could have caused the bad sectors...
Anyhow, I pulled the drive out, put a new one in, a 500gb 5400rpm made by Segate, fresh install of teh LION, made all of the available updates... it was running fine until yesterday when I got the the black screen again... I could not belive it... so I hard reste it again... today, the macbook crashed on it's own as I was writing a message using skype, I thought it was the black screen again (video failiur) but no, it actualy restarted on it's own.
    Any ideas?

  • Will time machine HD be picked up on a fresh install on snow leopard?

Hi guys i am going to do a fresh install on my machine. I recently upgraded OS's from leopard using the upgrade install that just wrote over my existing setup. I didnt want to restore from my time machine but just wanted to drag files from my time machine HD manually after the fresh install but im concerned that the HD wont be picked up by the new system.
I just wanted to make sure that my old time machine backup and all files will be seen by the fresh install so i dont loose any data.
    Has anybody done this before?
    thanks Jamie

Time Machine puts special "deny everybody everything" permissions on it's backups, and if you copy them via the Finder you may have all sorts of locked file and/or permissions issues with them, especially if you have multiple users. Not to mention the problem of getting everything you need. Complex applications that came with their own installers, for example, will probably have to be re-installed (and any license/purchase keys re-entered).
If you want a fresh copy of OSX, just do the install again. If you want to get rid of old stuff in your user folder, you're probably much better off just deleting what you don't want.
Or erase your disk, install OSX, then use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer the data you want from your backups. See #19 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
I just wanted to make sure that my old time machine backup and all files will be seen by the fresh install so i dont loose any data.
If you replace all the data on your internal HD, your next Time Machine backup will be a full one -- everything on the internal HD will be backed-up again. So it may have to delete a lot of old backups to make room for the new one.
If your TM disk isn't well over the size of the data currently on your HD plus 120% of the data you put back on it, there won't be room for a new full backup. You'll have to erase the disk and let TM start over.
Either way, TM will, sooner or later, delete it's copies of anything you don't put back.

  • [SOLVED] Choppy/Noisey audio on fresh install w/ PulseAudio

As the title states, I've got a fresh install, with audio being weird in certain applications. Most notably anything in wine (currently running Wine-multimedia from the aur) and VirtualBox VM's.
More interestingly, journalctl is being spammed with this message approximately 6 times per second, as I understand this process is somehow associate to Pulse:
Sep 01 21:26:03 xaeropc rtkit-daemon[1328]: Warning: Reached burst limit for user '1000', denying request.
    Things I've done so far:
-Kernel parameter change (posted as a suggested workaround):
    processor.max_cstate=2
-ArchWiki steps for determining proper fragment size and count
-Disabled time-based scheduler for PulseAudio (tsched=0)
    -Multiple different resampling methods
Any other ideas/suggestions to try? I'm thinking the Burst Limit and respawning is my big indicator here, but I don't know what to do to track this down.

Filter the comments out of your PA configuration with 'grep -v \# configuration_file'. Instead of simply lspci run
    lspci -vnn | grep -A1 -i audio;
    #and
    aplay -lL;
    Please correct/update your post.
Also provide the output of speaker-test with PA killed, so that you hear sound. It should show the current buffer and period ranges. Should you have multiple sound cards, state which one you are using as default.
Edit: Added example to filter comments out.

  • Fresh install of Oracle VM Manager Template into Oracle VM Server

    Hi,
I am trying to install the Oracle VM Manager template and then
create an Oracle VM Manager client.
I have already done a 'fresh install' of Oracle VM Server.
I do not have another machine available to use to contain the
'Oracle VM Manager', therefore, I am attempting to install the
Oracle VM Manager template directly into an Oracle VM Manager Server and
    run the client.
I am following the instructions of the Oracle VM Server Users Guide
    in section 4.3.
When I extract the zip file contents into the
/OVS/seed_pool directory, I get the following files.
    Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
    OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz
    So far, so good.
Next, I used 'tar' to help me extract the directories of the .tgz file.
    So far, so good.
Next, as instructed, I used 'python' and 'print randomMAC()' to create a new MAC address.
    Inside the /OVS/seed_pool/OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM/vm.cfg file
I modified the vif MAC address. I replaced the
xx:xx:xx with the 'last three' that were generated by the python randomMAC
    function from above.
    vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3E:<my generated numbers>', ]
    So far, so good?
In the Oracle VM Server Users Guide in section 4.3.,
The next step, expains that I should run
    xm create mv.cfg
I did this. When I ran this I received back the error.
    Using config file "./vm.cfg"
    Error disk is not accessible.
When I peek inside my vm.cfg file.
I see file references starting with the following
    file:/OVS/running_pool/ ...
Of, course my running_pool directory is empty.
(Again, this is a fresh install of Oracle VM Server).
My first question is the following.
Sometime in this process was I supposed to run
    the the following executable?
    ./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
If so, should I have done this early?
Was the modification of the vif (of adding the MAC address
into the vm.cfg file, something I 'should have not done'
or 'something that could be ignored' because the
'./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh' would have done this for me?
My second question is the following.
Would the following process be 'more correct?'
..1 Not modify the vm.cfg' file.
    ..2 run ./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh.
..3 In the /OVS/running_pool/ directory find my
vm.cfg file of interest, then modify the vif with a new MAC address.
..4 In /OVS/running_pool/Change my current location to my directory of interest
run xm create vm.cfg (to run my Oracle VM Manager)?
Any help or ideas whould be appreciated.
    Thank you very much,
    AIM

    Hi,

    Oracle VM Manager Version 2.2.0
    This document contains:
    1. Prerequisites for Oracle VM Manager virtual machine (VM) deployment
    2. Oracle VM Manager Template description
    3. Creating an Oracle VM Manager Virtual Machine from
    Oracle VM Manager Template
    4. Deployment Interview
    5. Known Issues
For more information on Oracle VM Manager, please refer to
the "Oracle VM Manager Installation Guide" and the "Oracle VM Manager
    User's Guide" available at:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/index.htm
    1. Prerequisites
    ================
    - A new install of Oracle VM Server 2.2 that has NOT been managed by another
Oracle VM Manager. Manager Template 2.2 is intended to be installed on Oracle
VM 2.2 server. If you have a new Oracle VM 2.1.5 server and want to deploy
Oracle VM Manager template, please use the Oracle VM 2.1.5 Manager template.
Note: root access to the server's dom0 is required.
    - It's highly recommended that you upgrade the default agent (ovs-agent-2.3-19)
to ovs-agent-2.3-27 or later. You can get the latest Oracle VM 2.2 packages
from Oracle's Unbreakable Linux Network (http://linux.oracle.com).
Note: Alternate location to get Oracle VM agent 2.3-27 is
    http://oss.oracle.com/oraclevm/server/2.2/RPMS/ovs-agent-2.3-27.noarch.rpm
    - A working directory of the Oracle VM Server 2.2 has at least 4GB free space
for downloading and installing the template. The working directory can be any
directory on the Oracle VM server except /OVS/running_pool.
Note: The /root partition of the default Oracle VM server install may not have
enough space to temporarily host the template installation. Please use other
directory that has sufficient free space.
    - At least 15GB of free space in the cluster root storage repository. For storage
and repository configuration, please refer to Oracle VM 2.2 Server User Guide:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/doc.22/e15444/storage.htm
    and
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/doc.22/e15444/repository.htm
    - At least 2GB of free memory on the Oracle VM Server
    - A static IP address for the Oracle VM Manager
    - If enabling HA (high availability) for the Oracle VM Manager,
mount a clustered OCFS2 or NFS filesystem on /OVS. If ext3 or a
local OCFS2 filesystem is used, enabling HA will cause the high availability
prerequisite checking to fail. The Oracle VM Manager configuration
process will exit without completing the configuration.
    - The Oracle VM Manager will register the first VM that it detects.
To have Oracle VM Manager be the first VM registered,
make sure there are no virtual machine images besides the Oracle VM Manager
virtual machine in the /OVS/running_pool directory on the Oracle VM Server.
    - A desktop or other system with a VNC Viewer installed
The steps below assume that the Oracle VM Server used is not currently
or was not previously managed by another Oracle VM Manager. If this is not
the case, the instructions below will ask user clean up Oracle VM Agent DB
before running the Oracle VM Manager.
    2. Oracle VM Manager Template Description
    =========================================
The Oracle VM Manager Template is distributed as one archive file which
    includes:
    File Version
    OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz 2.3
    Deploy_Manager_Template.sh 2.3
The OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz archive contains two disk images,
a VM configuration file and a readme file:
    - Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 x86 system disk image
    - Oracle VM Manager 2.2 disk image
    - vm.cfg
    - README
The system image is a JeOS (Just enough OS) installation of Oracle
Enterprise Linux 5.3. It is a smaller footprint install that contains
the only packages needed by Oracle VM Manager.
Oracle VM Manager is configured to use Oracle Database 10g
    Express Edition (included).
Deploy_Manager_Template.sh is used to check the prerequisite and
    create virtual machine.
During the first boot of the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine,
the Oracle VM Manager configuration process will create server pool
and import the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine.
Two OS user accounts are created by default:
    user: root password: ovsroot
    user: oracle password: oracle
The user 'oracle' belongs to the 'oinstall' and 'dba' groups.
The default vnc console password is 'oracle'
    3. Creating the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine
    =================================================
    1) Download the Oracle VM Manager Template (V19215-01.zip)
    from http://edelivery.oracle.com/oraclevm
    2) Login to the Oracle VM Server's dom0 as 'root'
Copy V19215-01.zip to your working directory with at least 4GB free space.
You can choose any directory on OVM Server except /OVS/running_pool.
This zip file contains the archive file OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz
    and a deploy script Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
    3) As root, run
    # unzip V19215-01.zip
    4) As 'root', run the deployment script:
    # chmod 755 Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
    # ./Deploy_Manager_Template.sh
The deployment script Deploy_Manager_Template.sh will complete the following
    tasks:
    a) prerequisite checking
    b) uncompress OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM.tgz file to directory
/OVS/running_pool. This directory will contain the files following files:
    /OVS/running_pool/OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM
    |- System.img (OS image file)
    |- Manager.img (Manager image file)
    |- vm.cfg (VM configuration file)
    |- README (Readme file)
    c) generate and assign new MAC address to the virtual machine
    d) interview the user for VM and VM Manager configuration parameters
(next section 'Deployment interview' provides the list of questions)
    e) create and boot the virtual machine from the Oracle VM Server
    command line
    f) display the access information for Oracle VM Manager and Oracle VM
    Manager VM
    4. Deployment Interview
    =======================
The deployment script will prompt a user to enter
    a) Agent password
The agent password is required for the prerequisites check.
    b) Storage configuration
Storage Source: NFS address, OCFS2 partition path
The script will automatically detect your cluster root storage repository
if you have configured it. Or it prompts users to input their storage source
and the script tries to set it up as cluster root.
NOTE: how to manually create your own storage repository in OracleVM server 2.2.x
    1) Register your storage source. Example:
    /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -n myhost:/mynfslocation
    /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -n /dev/sdb3
Note that the storage source should have at least 15GB free space.
If the storage source is successfully registered, note down the uuid genereated
by the command above, such as:
    51d4c69b-e439-41ac-8b31-3cc485c993b0 => /dev/sdb3
    2) Mount your storage repository.
If the agent version is 2.3-27 or higher, execute:
    /opt/ovs-agent-2.3/utils/repos.py -i
    otherwise, complete the following commands:
    [1] mkdir -p /var/ovs/mount/$(echo <uuid> | sed s/-//g | tr '[:lower:]' \
    '[:upper:]')"
where '<uuid>' is the uuid noted down in step 2)
[2] mount your storage source to the directory made in step [1].
    3) If /OVS exists, delete or move /OVS
    mv /OVS "/OVS.$(date '+%Y%m%d-%H%M%S').orig"
create a symbolic link from storage repository to /OVS
    ln -nsf /var/ovs/mount/<UUID>/ /OVS
    c) Network configuration
    Static IP address
    Netmask
    Default Gateway IP address
    DNS Server IP address
    Hostname
    d) Password for database accounts:
'SYS' and 'SYSTEM' (the same password the same password is used)
    'OVS'
    'oc4jadmin'
    'admin'
    e) Web Service configuration (supported in template in version 1.2)
Web Service password (at least 6 characters)
    Enable HTTPS or not
    f) SMTP server (outgoing mail server SMTP hostname)
    E-mail Address for account 'admin'
    g) Data for the manager services configuration:
    Oracle VM Server Pool Name
Oracle VM Server login user name
    Oracle VM Server login password
Note that Oracle VM Manager is critical for managing Oracle VM Server Pools.
Do not pause, suspend or shutdown this virtual machine! Configuring
HA is recommended for this virtual machine so that Oracle VM will
automatically restart the Oracle VM Manager virtual machine if there
    is a server crash.
    5. Known Issues
    ===============
    1) You may see messages on a virtual machine's console similar to these
when the virtual machine is booting up:
Fatal: No PCI config space access function found
rtc: IRQ 8 is not free.
    i8042.c: No controller found.
    These messages can be ignored.
    2) Mail server check fails.
    Bug #7140 in bugzilla.oracle.com
Oracle VM Manager installer only checks the default SMTP port 25 for the
mail server. If the SMTP port is not 25, the check fails, and you will
    see the following message:
Mail server '<mail server hostname>' check failed, want to re-enter it(Y|n)?
You can enter 'n' to skip the mail server checking. You will also see the
send mail checking fails with following message:
Failed to send mail to '<Admin e-mail address>'
    want to re-enter the e-mail address(Y|n)?
You can enter 'n' to skip the send mail checking.
    3) OEL VM console may display error messages similar to those below:
    BUG: warning at drivers/xen/fbfront/xenfb.c:143/xenfb_update_screen() (Not
    tainted)
    Call Trace:
    [<ffffffff803aa461>] xenfb_thread+0x135/0x2c5

    [<ffffffff802338ca>] kthread+0x0/0x132
    [<ffffffff80260b1a>] child_rip+0x0/0x12
This will not cause any problems.
    4) If you accidentally power off Oracle VM Manager virtual machine through
Oracle Manager UI, and restart the virtual machine from OVM server command
line, although Oracle VM Manager virtual machine is running normally,
the virtual machine status in Manager UI will stay in 'Shutting Down'.
This is expected, as the virtual machine status sync will only happen when
the virtual machine status is "Error" or "Powered Off".
To re-sync the virtual machine status, please complete the following steps:
    1. Log on the Manager UI;
    2. Navigate to the 'Virtual Machines' tab;
    3. Select Oracle VM Manager virtual machine, "OVM_EL5U3_X86_OVM_MANAGER_PVM";
    4. Choose 'Reset' from 'More Actions' dropdown list;
    5. Click 'Go' button, the status will become "Running" after a while.
    5) (Bug 9191053) For OVS agent version 2.3-19, the following High
    Availability scenario will not work.
"If a Virtual Machine Server fails, all running virtual machines are
restarted automatically on another available Virtual Machine Server."
For OVS agent 2.3-19, Oracle VM Manager virtual machine will not be
automatically restarted on any other available Virtual Machine Server,
but on the original Virtual Machine Server when it becomes available again.
To fix the issue, please upgrade OVS agent to 2.3-27 or the latest version.
