Rolling upgrade in MAA database with 2 node RAC on each site

All,
I have 2 node rac on SITE A, and it has Physical Standby database on SITE B it also 2 node RAC. Currently it is on 10.2.0.4 on AIX systems. We have mission crictical application runing and we can't aford the downtime of 5 to 6 hr to upgrade our CRS,ASM,DB oracle homes to 11G or even 10.2.0.5. I read rolling upgrade document on metalink and also documnet as well, and come up with following sequence.
SITE A==Primary Site, SITE B == Standby database
1) Shutdown DB on SITE B
2) Take the OS Level Backup of Binaries only on SITE B (Both node), I think this is just a Precautionary Measure
3) Start the DB on SITE B Still Physical Standby database let it synch with primary Site SITE A
4) Convert SITE B to Logical standby database
5) let it run for some time and be the two site SYNCH
6) now stop archivelog shipping to STANDBY SITE SITE B
7) Shutdown SITE B and apply the patch/upgrade binaries (CRS/ASM/DB)
8) Start and upgrade the DB on SITE B
9) Start the logical standby apply (SQL APPLY) and let it catch up with SITE A
10) Now Switchover to logical standby database on SITE B and ask application to connect to SITE B
11) Make sure the archivelogs are moving from SITE B to SITE A and SQL Apply is runing.
12) Now Stop archive log flow from SITE B to SITE A
13) Stop the database/ASM/CRS on SITE A
14) upgrade the SITE A binaries (CRS/ASM/DB)
15) Start and upgrade the DB on SITE A
16) Start the logical standby apply (SQL APPLY) and let it catch up with SITE B
17) Now Switchover Back to SITE A and let the application connect to SITE A
At this point by SITE B is a Logical Standby database
I think these summaries the steps involved in rolling upgrade, but I can't understand how I can go back to my MAA with physical standby database mode?
Does anyone has done this? Can anyone give me some tips or comments on my steps??
Help me if you can... thanks in advance.

Hi,
Is it you want to know the OS/Kernel side setting? You must comply with the following kernel requirements to install the clusterware.

  • Rolling Upgrade of Oracle 10gR2 RAC with Physical Standby (DG)

    Hi DBAs,
I want to do a rolling upgrade of Oracle 10.2.0.3 (2 node RAC+ASM) with Physical Standy Dataguard to Oracle 10.2.0.4 also applying CPU (April2009).
Please suggest the best way to perform this upgrade and patching with no downtime.
    Thanks
    -Samar-

Unfortunately rolling upgrade is only possible with a logical standby in place:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/upgrades.htm#CHDBJAGG
That doesn't help you at this time, but 11g has a way to do it with a physical standby. Even here you need an intermediate logical standby:

  • Database rolling upgrade cpu patch with minimal service outage

    Oracle 11gR2 Primary Instance
    Oracle 11gR2 Active Physical Standby
Requirement of applying CPU and CVE patches with minimal downtime. I believe that I've been able to apply CPU patch to Active Standby after deferring redo transport and applying patch to active physical standby first and then performing a manual switchover to have the standby become the primary and former-primary become the standby and they apply CPU Patch there and then perform another role transition to its original role.
Appreciate your experience with primary and active physical standby rolling upgrades/patches. Thanks

    Hello;
I believe you are over thinking this. All you have to do on the Standby is install the patch. No switchover, no SQL. No nothing.
The SQL will move from the Primary to the Standby.
Check the readme for the patch closely or post the patch number if you want to confirm.

If you are trying to avoid downtime entirely the switchover will take about as long as the patch.

We are planning to convert single node local/ordinary file system 11.2.0.3 database to 2 node RAC with ASM.
Please help me in creating the roadmap for the same.
    e.g
    1. Create the shared raw file system
    2. Create diskgroup for ASM
3.. Convert the local file system to ASM first

  • Rolling Upgrades in Rac

    Hi All,
can you please explain abt rolling upgrades in rac env
suppose i am having rac setup on 10.2.0.1 if i want to apply patch set 10.2.0.4 is it required downtime
As per the readme of 10.2.0.4
1)Stop every thing on node 1 and apply patch set
2)stop every thing on node 2 and apply patch set
3)stop the database and run the catupgrd.sql script.
My question is for running catupgrd script i have to bring down the db so what the meaning of rolling upgrade??
And in this type of sece which type of upgrade is best one rolling or non-rolling.

    Hi HTH
Thank you for clearing my doubts regarding Rolling upgrades and i have gone though the link and i have noticed the following steps
    For Standalone system
    1) Install Oracle 10g to a separate Oracle Home on the same server
    2) Create a 10g database with only the base tablespaces: SYSTEM, SYSAUX, UNDO, and TEMP
    3) On the 9i database, put all your tablespaces into read only mode (write downtime begins)
    4) Perform a transportable tablespace export of all non-system tablespaces (as a sysdba user)
    5) Shut down the 9i database (true downtime begins)
    6) Start up the 10g database
    7) Perform a transportable tablespace import into the 10g database (end true downtime)
    8) Make all your tablespaces read/write (end write downtime)
The above steps is going to work only for 9i to 10g or can we use it to any version to version.
BY using TTS is it suggestable method to do the upgrade??

  • RAC rolling upgrade

    Hi all
I'm performing rolling upgrade of cpu patch at rac environment
I open a connection to the database (using service) and it connects to the first node. Then I shutdown the first node to perform an upgrade and check the connection, but it doesn't switch to the second node automatically, but returns TNS error. What about if it's a production database and there're a lot of online scripts running on that node?
However, I tried it again and it automatically switched wihout any error. What can be reason?
    thanks
    John

Agreed... use the -local option and do each node individually.
11gR2? If you have TNS issues, it is indicative of an improperly configured local/remote_listener or SCAN on one or more nodes. Sometimes when additional nodes are added, these parameters may not necessarily be correct.

  • OS upgrade on  2-node RAC 10.2.0.4 system

    Dear all,
We are planning an OS upgrade from AIX5.3 to AIX6.1 as AIX5.3 OS support comes to an end by the IBM. For single instance databases procedure is quite simple. We shutdown the Database and ASM instances respectively. Upgrade the OS to AIX6.1 and relink Oracle 10.2.0.4 software for both ASM and Database instances and open up the Database after ASM.
The question is what should be the procedure for the 10.2.0.4 RAC database. Is there a supported guide to upgrade the OS in a rolling fashion? Or should we stop all RAC instances and upgrade the OS at the same time on all nodes and startup the servers. This means a huge downtime for our production and also we should be prepared for the surprises after the reboot of the servers which means a high risk for the business.
I could not find too much documentation on this issue up to now. There are some forum entries, but again the answers are questionable as they dont reference to a valid documentation from Oracle Corp.
Any suggestions and/or references are welcome.
    Thanks,
    ergemp.

    Hello,
As far as I know Oracle RAC support rolling upgrade for OS upgrade. what you might need to do is
    - stop instance on node 1 and make sure application can connect to another nodes
    - stop any cluster services on node 1
    - you might want to disable crs on that node (sometimes OS upgrade requires reboot couple times)
    - take full backup of OS before upgrade process
    - as you're using 10g RAC, there is no need to relink Clusterware home but you need to relink client shared libraries on CRSHOME (run ./genclntsh), and you need to relink Oracle home too
    - enable back crs and start crs services
    - troubleshooting the issue arise, if everything is OK then proceed to next node
    Hope this helps
    Cheers
    FZheng

  • Multiple databases/instances on 4-node RAC Cluster including Physical Stand

    OS: Windows 2003 Server R2 X64
    DB: 10.2.0.4
    Virtualization: NONE
    Node Configuration: x64 architecture - 4-Socket Quad-Core (16 CPUs)
    Node Memory: 128GB RAM
We are planning the following on the above-mentioned 4-node RAC cluster:
    Node 1: DB1 with instanceDB11 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover)
    Node 2: DB1 with instanceDB12 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover)
    Node 3: DB1 with instanceDB13 (Active-Passive: Failover only) + DB2 with instanceDB21 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover) + DB3 with instanceDB31 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover) + DB4 with instance41 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover)
    Node 4: DB1 with instanceDB14 (Active-Passive: Failover only) + DB2 with instanceDB22 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover) + DB3 with instanceDB32 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover) + DB4 with instance42 (Active-Active: Load-balancing & Failover)
Note: DB1 will be the physical primary PROD OLTP database and will be open in READ-WRITE mode 24x7x365.
Note: DB2 will be a Physical Standby of DB1 and will be open in Read-Only mode for reporting purposes during the day-time, except for 3 hours at night when it will apply the logs.
Note: DB3 will be a Physical Standby of a remote database DB4 (not part of this cluster) and will be mounted in Managed Recovery mode for automatic failover/switchover purposes.
Note: DB4 will be the physical primary Data Warehouse DB.
Note: Going to 11g is NOT an option.
Note: Data Guard broker will be used across the board.
    Please answer/advise of the following:
    1. Is the above configuration supported and why so? If not, what are the alternatives?
    2. Is the above configuration recommended and why so? If not, what are the recommended alternatives?

    Hi,
As far as i understand, there's nothing wrong in configuration except you need to consider below points while implementing final design.
    1. No of CPU on each servers
    2. Memory on each servers
    3. If you've RAC physical standby then apply(MRP0) will run on only one instance.
    4. Since you are configuring physical standby for on 3rd and 4th nodes of DB1 4 node cluster where DB13 and DB14 instances are used only for failver, if you've a disaster at data center or power failure in entire data center, you are losing both primary and secondary with an assumption that your primary and physical standby reside in same data center so it may not be highly available architecture. If you are going to use extended RAC for this configuration then it makes sense where Node 1 and Node 2 will reside in Datacenter A and Node 3 ,4 will reside in Datacenter B.
    Thanks,
    Keyur

  • Question about DBCA generate script o create RAC database 2 node cluster

Question about creating two node RAC database 11g after installing and configuration 11g clusterware. I've used DBCA to generate script to create a rac database. I've set
environment variable ORACLE_SID=RAC and the creating script creates instance of RAC1 and RAC2. My understanding is that each node will represent a node, however there should only be one database with a name of 'RAC'. Please advise

You are getting your terminology mixed up.
You only have one database. Take a look, there are one set of datafiles on shared storage.
You have 2 instances which are accessing one database.
Database name is RAC. Instance names are RAC1, RAC2, etc, etc.
Also, if you look at the listener configuration and if your tnsnames is setup properly then connecting to RAC will connect you to either one of the instances wheras connecting to RAC1 will connect you to that instance.

    Thanks for help!

Hi... I'm in the same situation.
I need to add a new second database on a RAC installation based on already available ASM instance.
    I'm using 11gR2.
I read your suggested documentation. Then I typed asmca and analyzed my asm configuration:
As you can see I have a DISK GROUP NAME with several FREE space.
If I select Volumes tab the following is my current configuration:
Selecting Create button, I can insert some values as you can see:
    First question:
Is this the right way to create space for a new database ? Consider that running dbca.. no DISK GROUP NAME is available.
    Second question:
When I created my first database on this DISK GROUP NAME no volumes were created. Why now I have to do it ? Is this necessary to really separate datafiles coming from different databases ?
