Rolls vs. Albums

New to mac, so this might be a very stupid question, but what is the difference between rolls and albums? I organized my photos into albums, but when I try to attach a pic to an email for example, I have to go through the rolls. Since one of the first rolls I downloaded was over 200 pictures, this is not an easy task. Am I organizing the wrong way?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you watched the iPhoto tutorial? http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/iphoto/
First, you should always manipulate your iPhoto files through the application, and not via Finder. This is because any changes you make to the files and folders in the iPhoto library folder in Finder can damage your iPhoto database. To select photos for email or uploading, you can do a File > Export > File Export to a folder on your desktop, then attach or upload from that folder. This also allows you to resize the pictures to better fit an email or website. When you're done, that desktop folder can be trashed.
You can also copy a photo by dragging its thumbnail to your desktop. You can locate it by right-clicking and selecting "Show File" from the menu. A Finder window will open with that photo selected.
Now, the structure question. iPhoto stores your photos in its folder structure (which you should really not mess around in). If those folders are numbers that reflect the photo date, you have iPhoto 5. If they match your Film Rolls then you have iPhoto 6. (You've posted in the v5 forum. The structural difference is significant, so it helps to know which one you have.) With v6 you can change those roll-based folders by organizing the Film Rolls in iPhoto. With v5 they are based on the date of the photo, and only change if you change the photo's date. If you have v6 and would like more suggestions regarding organizing your rolls, let me know and I'll be happy to help you further.
Albums are virtual arrangements an do not contain actual files. They are a set of instructions that tell iPhoto which photos to display together. You won't see them represented in the Finder at all. This allows a photo to be in 50 albums with no duplication of the file on your hard drive. (That photo of you, your kids, the dog, at Christmas, can be in the album for you, your kids, etc.)
Since Albums can overlap or miss photos, I use Film Roll view to keep my library organized. This shows me my entire iPhoto inventory, that is each photo displayed once and only once. I keep my rolls closed until I need to use them, and write comments for each roll to give me a description of its contents (so I know which rolls to open). [Keeping rolls closed is a great way to optimize the loading speed of iPhoto upon launch.] I only use Albums for specific purposes, like slideshows. I recently applied keywords to every photo in my library, so with the click of a keyword I can find photos of my kids, Christmas, vacation, and any combination or exclusion of these.
Whether you prefer to use Albums/Folders or Film Rolls as your primary method of organization is a matter of personal choice. After you use iPhoto for a while you'll find the method that suits you.
P.S. Sorry to duplicate some of Lori's response. As I was writing, she posted her reply. I'm too lazy to go back and edit mine. Kudos, Lori.

  • Cant access camera roll under ALBUMS

When looking under Albums I see the Camera Roll heading under Album Title Bar in the background but cannot access it. I can only access the few pictures in the Photo Library or other albums. TO get to the camera roll now I must go to the actual camera.
Something has happened. Anyone know how to fix this back to normal?
    have version 10.2.1 3gs

I had a problem too with iphone 4 and version 4.3. Here is the camera Roll tucks under the title bar. Only solution so far to reboot and easiest one is to kill the running program i.e. Double click on Home button  (when unlocked position) > Hold finger on of the running program at the bottom until you see delete icon (red with white line) > then click on this icon to delete/kill the photo album.
But this seems to be right solution. apple has to fix this...Any ideas?

  • Are my rolls and albums confused?

The first half of the rolls in my library are showing completely the wrong photos. They are from a completely different time. The details on the roll are correct but when I open the roll it shows photos from 6 months later. The same with the albums. Can any one help me please. Thanks in advance.

IPhoto doesn't make things like this up on its own. Select one of those photos in iPhoto and press command-I. Photos are assigned to a "roll" based on the import date. Does the "imported" date not match the roll's date stamp?
The only "internal" event that might change that is a database rebuild that somehow finds that bit of information corrupted -- it would be replaced with the date of the rebuild (and placed on a corresponding new roll).
Other ways the import date (and hence, the roll) for a photo would change is if the photo(s) were exported, deleted from iPhoto, then imported again.
I don't think there is a third choice.

  • Camera roll photo album scrolled above where I can click it

My iphone 4 photo album app has my only album, "camera roll," appearing under the heading (Albums) where I cannot click on the album but I can scroll down the page to see that it is there.  Any help on why this happened and a way to fix it?

This started for me earlier this year, now it happens about once every 2 weeks.  Only fix is to reboot the phone. Of course it happens when I need something quick, making it a pain.  Hopefully somebody get this glitch submitted into Apple so that it sorts itself out in the next software release.

  • How do I place photos in a "sub album" and delete original from camera roll while keeping the copy in the sub album?

I'm able to create as many albums as I want under the main camera roll. from what I can see, I can add photos from my camera roll to an album but the two images are connected. so what happens is when I try to create albums according to event or subject, if I wanted to delete the original from the camera roll, it also deletes the copied image. What gives? Is there a way to have multiple albums on iphone where images won't be deleted?

No, the actual photos always remain in the camera roll.  Albums only contain pointers to selected photos in the camera roll.  They are like music playlists.  If you delete a song from your music library it will also be deleted from any playlist that contained it.  And you can't keep songs in a playlist that are not in your music library.

  • Automatically create albums based on rolls?

My iPhoto photos are very well arranged by rolls. However, there isn't a way in other iLife programs or Front Row to browse by rolls. Is it possible for iPhoto to automatically create albums for each imported roll (with Automator or otherwise)?
    Thanks.

I don't use Automator much but all you need to do is to drag a roll icon into the Source pane to create an album with the same name as the roll.
If you import manually, i.e. a folder containing the image files, and drag the folder into the Source pane you'll create a roll and album with the same title as the folder you used to drag the photos with.
Now that iPhoto puts the originals in individual folders representing the rolls, there are a number of image browsers that will let you browser the roll folders that are located in the iPhoto Library/Originals folder. For example: QPict, ImagePlus, ImageBrowser, iFastViewer. However, remember Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. All changes to the photos, moving, renaming must be done by iPhoto.

  • Can i get rid of pictures from my camera roll once they are added to another album

I have now created new albums on my phone and added photos to it from my orginal camera roll. Can I now delete those pictures from the orginal camera roll without deleting them from my phone completely?

    No.
There is only one picture.  It is in the camera roll.  When you make an album, you simply create a new way to access that exact same picture.
It is the same as the music in your itunes library.  The song is in the library.  That exact same song can be in a playlist.  If you delete it from the library, it will be gone from the playlist as well.
This is how photos work as well.  All photos taken with iphone are stored in the camera roll.  Albums are simply playlists from which you can access selected photos from the camera roll.

  • Photostream adding photos to camera roll...

I have a single photostream (one iCloud account) set up on 4 devices - iMac (running Aperture 3.3), two iPhone 4S's, and an iPad 2.  In order to share photos over all devices, I used my wife's iCloud account to connect all the devices to one Photostream. It is working perfectly...except...
When a new photo is added to any device and the Photostream folders in Aperture on my iMac, it shows up in the Photostream album all the devices just as intended...except for my wife's iPhone, where they show up in the "camera roll" album, her Photostream folder is empty (always).  If my wife takes a photo, it shows up in her camera roll, makes it to all the other devices via photostream, but never makes it to the photostream on her phone...it's as if the camera roll photo album is a surrogate for the photostream album on her phone.
The obvious issue is that the photos that are loading up in her "camera roll" are then backed up via the iCloud in lieu of the Photostream (which doesn't count against your total iCloud memory if I understand it correctly) and is using up our iCloud memory extremely fast - previoulsy we never used more than 6-7GB...now, since setting up photostream, we are at 24.5GB on a 25GB account and getting space warnings.
As a result, we've had to turn off photostream for the time being, or, i suppose we could buy ungodly amounts of iCloud memory to compensate for this (we are the proud parents of a photogenic toddler - arent they all?? - and take a lot of photos), I can't help but feel this should be working better...any thoughts of what might be happening?  I'm sure I am missing something simple...but what is it?
FYI - I have restored her iPhone, reset the photostream, deleted the photos in her camera roll...all to no avail...As I noted, all the other devices seem to be behaving as expected.

    From this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486
iOS devices: New photos you take are automatically uploaded to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and are connected to Wi-Fi. My Photo Stream does not push photos over cellular connections.

  • When I want to add an album onto my iphone using itunes, I am successful in  putting one album on my phone but when I want to add another album it deletes the first album I put on my phone. How can I add more albums without some albums disappearing?

I am having a problem with importing cds onto my iPhone. I have successfully added a playlist or album to my phone but when I want to add another album/artist, the first album that was on there has all of a sudden disappeared. Its like I can only have one album on my phone. This is my first time dealing with anything Apple because I have been using android phones. Any help would be appreciated as I don't fully understand iTunes.

You can delete photos from individual albums but not from the camera roll.  If you try to delete a photo from camera roll it will be deleted from all other albums ("locations") that contain the photo.  This is because the actual photo is in the camera roll (the albums only contain links to the photo in camera roll, not the actual photo).

  • Why is Remote app album view different than iTunes?

I use the Remote app on my iPad to control the streaming of my PC's iTunes music library to my stereo.  I like the Album view because I can see most of the album covers. In iTunes 11.1 on my PC, album view displays the albums alphabetically by artist.  i.e. all Beatles albums are listed before any Rolling Stones albums.  But when viewing the same library on my iPad using the Remote app, the albums are listed alphabetically by album title, not by artist.  So each artist's albums are scattered all over.  I don't know about you, but when I'm looking for an album to play, I think about artists, not titles of albums.  But there doesn't seem to be any way to change the way the Remote app orders albums.  Am I missing something?  Is there any way to configure the Remote app to display albums in artist order?

Hi go the first page of the Remote, the one which shows your shared libraries.
Click Settings, and then Sort by Artist tab,
    Hope that helps!

  • How can I delete photos and or albums from my iphone without having to delete them in all locations?  I have some pictures in an album that i want to remove them from but when I try it asks do I want to delete picture  from all loc

I have pictures in albums on my iphone.  I want to delete them from one album but when I try it asks to delete the picture from all locations.  I only want to delete it from 1 album.  Is this possible to do?

You can delete photos from individual albums but not from the camera roll.  If you try to delete a photo from camera roll it will be deleted from all other albums ("locations") that contain the photo.  This is because the actual photo is in the camera roll (the albums only contain links to the photo in camera roll, not the actual photo).

  • Two of the same artists showing up on my ipod when I add 1 specific album

OK so here's what's happening.  I downloaded a rolling stones album "Let It Bleed," off the internet.  And I made a file for it, put the songs in the file, and put the file in itunes. So I have ALL the songs, album artwork etc in itunes, but the songs were out of order. SO... I looked it up, saw that fixing the track listing on each song when you hit "Get Info" on a specific song, would put the song in the correct space. So I numbered all the songs, 1-9, ON ITUNES!  THEN... I TRANSFERRED the album to my ipod, and guess what happened?  Well, all the songs showed up correctly, numbered and all, with everything I had intended. But after I transferred the album, it showed under artists, The Rolling Stones, TWO OF THE SAME ONE!  TWO ROLLING STOnes with the same songs and albums.  And when I deleted one song from one artist, it deleted it from the second artist too..... and before i put the track listings down for each song on the album, it worked! I could transfer the album no problem except that the songs weren't in order. But as soon as i numbered the songs, it double the artist Rolling Stones, ON MY IPOD ONLY! Not on itunes or my computer! So I need ACCURATE AWESOME HELPFUL GLORIOUS SAVING ANSWERS that will help me fix this problem.  THANK YOU I REALLY NEED THIS ALBUM PROPERLY ON MY IPOD BY TOMORROW SINCE I'M GOING ON A CAR TRIP

    Hello samanthaflora
If you see a cloud option, then you have the option of Show All Music turned on. If you go to Settings > Music and look for that option, you can turn it off to not show any of your purchased history to show up in the Music App. Try that and then sync the music again to see if it still shows up as double.  If it is, then could you take a screen shot and add it to the reply so that way we can see what you are describing to better assist you.

  • Organizing rolls from iPhoto, in Aperture

I recently got the trial Aperture and imported my iPhoto film rolls. I have all my rolls organized by date of the roll. I have moved pictures between rolls to group them. This way it is sort of like an album.
In Aperture you can organize pictures by every criteria but date of film roll imported. Does anybody know how to keep my original pictures within their iPhoto rolls and alpha date the collections by film roll data?
I want each roll in the browser to have all the pictures (even with differnet dates) in the same group.
    aehaas

Aperture's workflow is different, as is its organizational structure. iPhoto's rolls metaphor is fundamentally not as effective for many photographers, who are event or project based.
OK, so what to do ...
I would suggest you map rolls to projects. Essentially a project is a container for images for shots on a day or series of days. Since it sounds like you have rolls which would on the one hand consolidate into a project and on the other maybe span projects, some decisions will be necessary.
To get visibility back to your rolls structure, you could then use Albums. Albums can contain images (more correctly pointers to the image in a project) from one project or multiple projects.
Using this structure should allow you to see thematic or event groupings (projects) and the more discrete roll structure (albums).
Above all this, you could have a Folder container for the year, where all projects and albums for a year are held within a folder for that year.
