ROM, Chip, and OS screen at boot
Startled this AM when I pushed the power button to see read only memory, chip, bios, and OS data on a screen instead of the normal start up sequence. Instructions on the screen said use the volume level switch to move between commands. Options included reboot, fastboot, and power down.
I chose the power down option which turned off the phone briefly and then it turned itself on again this time normally,. The phone is making calls, getting email, etc. s appears to be working ok.
Is this a "feature" of an overnight update or anything I should care about?
You're OK Somehow your volume down buttom must have been depressed when you pressed the power button. That brings you to that screen, Highlighting "reboot" (by using the volume button(s) to move up or down) then depress the power botton to execute.

Ok, so running Lion on a MacBook, (2010 i think) and the OS got corrupted(stuck on spinning wheel and grey screen on boot)
Tried to repair the disk via disk utility using an install CD, no go, couldn't repair, so, did a clean install.
New install went fine, computer worked for about 3 days and then stuck on the spinning wheel again.
suspecting physical damage to the harddrive, I installed the OS to an external, and booted from there. Worked for a couple days and then stuck on the spinning wheel.
I have repeated the process 5 times now, each time it works for a little and then craps out again.
What's going on?
as a note, when I say it gets stuck on the spinning wheel, I have left it for 12 hours trying to boot to no avail. The Apple Hardware Test doesn't always detect all errors.
Next time you get the gray screen/spinning wheel, try booting into the Safe Mode to see if it will boot.
Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade
Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
I have tried these:
1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
Thoughts and suggestions?

Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only Boots to a black screen with a mouse cursor
Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only Boots to a black screen with a mouse cursor after I installed Mcafee Internet Security.
Hi I installed 1of 3 McAfee Internet Security protections on my HP laptop a few weeks ago with no issues. I Have a Dell XPS 420 desk top with Windows Vista operating
system, it’s never had any issues, until 2 nights ago I installed McAfee Internet Security (detected incompatible files and will remove) pc now only boots up to a black screen with a mouse cursor, it will show the windows logo and a hash symbol floating around
the screen. Now 2 weeks ago I installed the same program on my Dell all in one desk top with Windows 7, the same issue happen but that pc has no screen activity, I tried a back to factory reboot on this one, still black screen.Hi,
Please install the compatible version of McAfee Internet Security:
http://home.mcafee.com/store/internet-security
if you have startup issue, you can boot into Safe Mode to uninstall the problematic software to go back into Windows.

My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs, then the machine shuts down and restarts. This sequence will repeat seemingly forever unless I shut it down manually.
I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
Any help is appreciated.Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -

I am running OS 10.5.8. Tried reinstalling, restoring, and resetting both with installation disc and without, but to no avail.
I recently upgraded from 1GB memory to 4 GB. It ran great for a couple of weeks, when I eventually powered it off, it would not come back. With installation disc, I did get to the utilities and tried repair and even reinstall original OS (several updates down from 10.5.8). At one point, I was able to restore a previous session, but it only lasted for about 3 days until I powered it off again, then back to square 1. I have verified the Macintosh HD disc and repaired it, I have reset everything I can find that might need resetting... Still nothing.
SO, is it toast, or is it possible to install OS 10.6 and get it to boot?Erase the drive then install OS X:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If this doesn't work then the drive is probably bad or some of the new RAM you installed is marginally defective. -
My Macbook Pro 17" 2.44ghz all of a sudden one day decided to not boot up. When the power button is pressed the sleep light in the front on the latch release turns on and there is a small running sound but it never boots up and the screen never lights up. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?
I'd love to repair it but not if it'll cost 500 bucks or more to replace the logicboard.
I appreciate any help
MichaelLao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands. -

AMD Catalyst Omega Driver: 14.501.1003.0 WHQL (latest non-beta driver)
When booting my computer in UEFI mode, occasionally, my monitor does not wake from sleep and the screen remains black until Windows takes over and the login screen displays. This seems to usually occur after the computer has been powered off for more than 10 minutes. Sometimes this never happens, the screen remains black the whole time, and I need to hard reset. Sometimes it boots fine.
This black screen / no signal issue also occurs far more frequently when attempting to resume from sleep. I strike a key on the keyboard or hit the power button while the computer is in sleep mode, the computer wakes up, but the monitor never turns on. This forces me to either hard shutdown or reset in order to restore graphics.
In addition, I have a Razer keyboard that shuts off its backlight when the display is turned off, and it remains off when this problem occurs. This likely means that there is a problem with the card, drivers, or something else, rather than cabling. I might just RMA if we don't get anywhere here.
Perhaps a good first step would be ensuring that my card is flashed with the latest vBIOS. Can you send a link to that?
I'm also wondering if ULPS might be interfering, even though I am not in a CrossFireX setup.
Other than this MAJOR issue, the card works fine when playing 3D games. Though, I had major issues with video artifacts when playing 2D games or doing anything else simple (web browsing, moving windows) because of the absolutely terrible decision to underclock the past couple generations of AMD cards so much that the GPU can't function. I solved this by modifying an OverDrive profile to raise the idle clock to 850 MHz, but not overclocking at all.
Thank you.
Meta discussion for the mods (feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss this further, in order to keep the discussion here on topic): sorry for not immediately opening up another forum topic when commenting on this issue. Every single other community that I've been a part of prefers to keep users with the same problem on the same thread. In my experience, mods yell at people for opening up duplicate bug reports and duplicate issues far more than they ask people to fragment information across multiple threads, therefore making it difficult to consolidate information. It could be a mobo issue, but all of the quirks seem to point to the card.
I do not recall if I tested the card in another PC, but I no longer have a second desktop to test with.
I do think I tested an NVIDIA card on a separate Windows install with this build though. No issues there if my memory serves correctly. I've been troubleshooting this issue for months, and I'm becoming tired of this stubborn problem, so the attempts at problem-solving are becoming blurred.

Gray screen after boot and blue screen with stripes
Hi, I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2011 with Mavericks (came with Snow Leopard).
History:
One day i was working and things were too slow. I tried to restart but it was taking too long to close all the programs. So I forced shut down by holding the power button. When I turned it on again, my problems begin.
Problem:
The Apple logo and the spinning wheel appear. After a while, both disappear and it freezes at gray screen. Some solutions I tried make the screen goes blue with black vertical stripes. In both cases, I have to force shut down.
Solutions I tried:
- Reset NVRAM
It does reset, but nothing change
- Log in my Windows partition. I can't log
- Hold option key and choose recovery. Blue screen
- Recovery system by restart and press Command-R. Blue Screen.
- Safe boot by pressing Shift. Blue Screen
- Verbose by pressing Command-V. Restart and gray screen again.
- Single-user mode by pressing Command-S
Tried to reapair hard drive:
/sbin/fsck –fy
Returns the message "** The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.". I restart and nothing change.
Tried to change startup permissions:
mount -uw /
chown root /
chmod 1775 /
exit
Restart and nothing change.
- Boot from a bootable USB flash drive
Holding option key, I choose my flash drive with Ubuntu installed. It gives me 3 options: Use Ubuntu without installing, Install Ubuntu, Repair Disk Errors (something like that). The 3 options go to the blue screen
Flash drive with Mavericks. Blue screen.
-Boot from my Snow Leopard CD. Gray screen, restarting, gray screen.
I don't what else I can do. Is it a hardware problem? At first I thought it was some corrupted file. But is it a GPU or logic board problem? What else can I try?I found this to work at least to get in and backup some files. It is VERY important to put these commands in EXACTLY as seen here, including spaces.
Boot into Single-User mode (Command-S while booting up)
Execute the following commands:
/sbin/fsck -fy /
/sbin/mount -uw /
mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .
mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .
touch /System/Library/Extensions
exit
I guess these two graphics extensions go bad quite often on Macbook Pro 15-inch. They are part of the logic board. The only problem I had was I still couldn't get into my computer any other way, and the graphics for Safari were messed up. Firefox was okay. Good Luck!

Grey screen at boot up and then hang up
I've tried to use my 2008 iMac running MAC OS 10.7.5 this morning and it won't boot. I get to the grey screen where it would normally display the apple logo and then the login prompt, but hangs up before that point.
I've sucessfully booted it into safe mode and all the hardware checks I've performed suggest that everything is ok.

I'm not sure what the "O3REQUIRE FAILED" relates to and also the control characters at the end!?! Does anyone know?
Also does anyone know how to fix this?
Any help you can provide would be useful.
ThanksOk, I've uninstalled both VMware and MacFUSE using the documented procedures taken from official websites.
I've rebooted and I still have the same problem... hangs before the login screen appears. I can still login via safe mode however.
Do you want me to post the output from the three steps again?
