Rommon upgrade on 4506 Sup 7-E
Hi!
I need to do a rommon upgrade on a Catalyst 4500 Supervisor Engine 7-E, to run "cat4500e-universalk9.SPA.03.06.02.E.152-2.E2.bin" is the "only" thing I need to do on the Sup:
1;upload the file, tftp the rommon file (cat4500-e-ios-promupgrade-150-1r-SG11)
2;reload?
with the command:
upgrade rom-monitor file bootflash:cat4500-e-ios-promupgrade-150-1r-SG11
Sorry, I have searched the internet but just want to be sure.
Thanks a lot for any help!
the upgrade rom-monitor is only on certain router models?
This command is only for routers.
Ok, so when upgrading on a 4506 you only need to put the file in the bootflash and reload, that's it?
I have no idea how to upgrade Sup6 and earlier. Sup7 & Sup8 has three methods of upgrading the IOS: One using telnet and two using remote connection.
SO I have no idea which method you're talking about because it's not as "straightforward" as it seems. The bootstrap file needs to be run FIRST before the IOS is run.
upgrade rom-monitor file bootflash:cat4500-e-ios-promupgrade-150-1r-SG11
This command won't work.

Cat 4000 Sup 1 and 2 rommon upgrade release notes?
I'm trying to find the release notes for the Cat 4000 sup 2 rommon upgrades. I've looked all over CCO but haven't been able to find them. In the release notes for CatOS 8.x, 7.x etc it tells you HOW to upgrade the rommon, but it doesn't tell you WHAT it does.
I've done the 6500 sup and msfcs before and they had release notes.
These are the ones I'm looking for:

Question on 4510E+R with Sup7E, redundant sups, both IOS and ROMMON upgrade
I found the procedure for a non-disruptive IOS upgrade for a dual-Sup7E 4510E+R using the...
redundancy reload peer
redundancy force-switchover
.....commands to maintain switch availability during IOS upgrades.
Can I use the same procedure for a ROMMON upgrade? I will not have console access and must do it remotely.
This is what I have:
Current ROM: 15.0(1r)SG5
Current IOS: bootflash:cat4500e-universalk9.SPA.03.03.02.SG.151-1.SG2.bin
This is where I want to go:
New ROMMON: cat4500-e-ios-promupgrade-150-1r-SG11
New IOS: cat4500e-universalk9.SPA.03.04.05.SG.151-2.SG5.bin
config-register is currently 0x2102
Current bootvar:
boot system flash bootflash:cat4500e-universalk9.SPA.03.03.02.SG.151-1.SG2.bin
Questions:
1) Can I upgrade the ROMMON first, then IOS?
2) If #1 is true, is there any problems with a temporary scenario where each Sup is running a different ROMMON version?
Proposed proceedure:
3a) Upgrade ROMMON on standby Sup
3b) switchover to make the standby active
3c) Upgrade ROMMON on the original active Sup
3d) Upgrade IOS on the original active Sup
3e) switchover to make the original Sup active
3f) Upgrade IOS on the original standby Sup.
Thanks for any feedback.Hi Eric,
There are 2 ways to upgrade:
1-Load the IOS version you want to both Sups, change the boot variable, so the switch can load the new IOS after the reboot and finally reboot the chassis.
2-Use ISSU see link:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4500-series-switches/prod_white_paper0900aecd806f0663.html
As for the ROMMON, you usually don't need to upgrade it often and you can always do that later if you need to. I think, some of the newer versions of IOS upgrade the ROMOM as well as the main image but I am not sure exactly for what platforms.

Router ROMMON upgrade - your opinions
Hello,
I've read in several documents that there is only a need to upgrade ROMMON if there are new features in new ROMMON versions. But, e.g. the ROMMON upgrades for the Cisco 2800 platform, the changelog for 12.4(13r)T5 says "Enhancement for device access in certain Cisco routers.",
12.4(13r)T6 says "DRAM access optimization" and 12.4(13r)T11 says "write/erase timeout increase + status read changes".
Or with the Cisco 2900 platform, the changelog for 15.0(1r)M10 says:
Saving of IOS config sometimes fails on some 2900s (Fix in ROMMON)
- Bootflash access timing parameter change.
Compact Flash timing parameter changes (ROMMON)
- Compact flash access timing parameter change.
I think the bug "Saving of IOS config sometimes fails" is not a small one. And I don't know what "DRAM access optimization" or "write/erase timeout increase + status read changes" exactly does.
Is it still true to upgrade ROMMON just in case there are new features which are needed. Or should the ROMMON be upgraded just as the IOS if a new version with fixes is available?
Thank you for your opinions.Disclaimer

Just like with IOS upgrades, generally most would upgrade if there's a new feature or bug fix that pertains to you. When neither is true, most prefer to not upgrade; "it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Consider many software releases are for bug fixes, so although you might not have bumped into a known defect, you may. This would argue for upgrading all maintenance fixes. However, sometimes, maintenance for defects introduces other defects. This argues only do an upgrade if operationally necessary.
So, whether it's an IOS or ROMMON upgrade, it's really what you think is best.
PS:
BTW, for some platforms like the 2800, I recall an effective ROMMON update would force an immediate reload, unlike a IOS upgrade which can be loaded onto flash and the reload scheduled for later. (Suspect this is why Leo insures there's a new IOS on the 2800 before he does the ROMMON upgrade.) -
4506 & SUP V Management IP address question.....
Hello all, I have two questions. The new 4506 SUP V engines don't have the good old SCO interface that I'm used to. So, since it's running an IOS now instead of the old CATos, I figured I'l create a new vlan and then make it the management IP address by using the 'MANAGEMENT' command (like in the old 2900's). Well, that didn't work either, so my question is...on what int. do I configure the mgnt. IP address?
-thank you....Russ,
In the current version (up to 2.1) the Management IPs for blades are required to belong to the same subnet as the Management Interfaces of the Fabric Interconnects. This is due to the way we proxy the KVM request from Management Interfaces to the Blades CIMC. In a future release we're investigating breaking the blade IPs into their own subnet/VLAN but this is a ways out - no committed date at this time.
We understand this puts quite a requirment on the size of the Management Subnet, but with proper design it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Robert -
I have got 4506 Sup V with 10GE. On the Sup V engine there is something called Utlization and the bottom there is 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. Can any body tell me what is that about.
And also how to check the backplane utlization on a switch.Hello,
according to the data sheet (see the link below), the LED's you see are used for the following:

I have a cisco 4506 with supervisor Engine IV.Initially when i put the switch on the supervisor engine light turns orange.after some diagnosis i found out that one of the fans on the power supply wasnt functioning properly.when i remove this power supply and power the switch the sup engine turns green. However the ethernet interfaces and gigabit ethernet interfaces on the line card r down no traffic is being processed on the switch.what could be the problem. Is there a way u should configure the 4506 to process packets
Hi Kwak,
Oki now let us resolve it!!!
Yes by default all the ports are into vlan 1 so it depends if you want to assign the ports into any other vlan you have to create vlan first. But ports will remain in down down state till the the time you connect any network device to it. Can you please confirm if you have connected any device like workstation or any other device to any port.
All the ports remain in down down state if they are not active.
Try to connect some device it should work

Hi,
My existing 4006 chassis is using Supervisor III (WS-X4014).
I have another 4506 chassis using Supervisor IV (WS-X4515) and a Netflow Services Card (WS-F4531) build on top of it.
I need Netflow Services Card in 4006, so can I just replace the Supervisor IV (WS-X4515) used in cisco 4006? Is it compatible with 4006?
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
HowYeehi HowYee,
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps4324/product_data_sheet0900aecd8035cf2b.html
according to that document, it is not possible if you want to put supIV to 4006 chassis
Chassis and Line-Card Support
You can deploy the supervisor engine IV in single-chassis nonredundant mode in the Cisco Catalyst 4503, 4503-E, 4506, and 4506-E chassis. You can also deploy it in single-chassis redundant mode as an option in the Cisco Catalyst 4507R chassis (slots 1 and 2 only) and Cisco Catalyst 4507R-E/4507R+E chassis (slots 3 and 4).
The supervisor engine IV is compatible with the classic Cisco Catalyst 4500 and the E-series Cisco Catalyst 4500 Line Cards. Table 1 gives performance information for the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series Supervisor Engine IV.

SP1 to R2 Client Upgrade via SUP
Hi,
Currently planning an upgrade to R2. We currently only deploy clients via SUP (SP1) then update clients to the CU by using SCUP. A WMI filter then disables Windows Updates for clients where the installed version of the client is >5. This
is to prevent auto updates interfering with software updates delivered by CM.
I am planning to roll out the R2 upgrade also via SUP by amending the WMI filter so that it looks for clients less than the R2 version, which will re-enable automatic updates and pull down the new client.
I am aware that I could also use the automatic client upgrade option, but where servers have maintenance windows I could see this never running during a MW.
Any comments/thoughts on this approach?
ThanksHi,
Could this maintenance windows work fine when you deploy other updates to the same clients?
Please examine MaintenanceCoordinator.log, ScanAgent.log and ServiceWindowManager.log on the client.
Best Regards,
Joyce Li

Yes, they will, because other updates are deployed with a deadline. The automatic update method uses a scheduled task which may not tie in with the MW, and so will never run. -
Mgnt IP address on 4506 w/ sup V
Hello all, I have two questions. The new 4506 SUP V engines don't have the good old SCO interface that I'm used to. So, since it's running an IOS now instead of the old CATos, I figured I'l create a new vlan and then make it the management IP address by using the 'MANAGEMENT' command (like in the old 2900's). Well, that didn't work either, so my question is...on what int. do I configure the mgnt. IP address?
-thank you....Hi,
Just think of Cat4506 with SupV like being a router: Any L3 interface can be used for mgmt. This can be either physical with "no switchport" configured and IP address assigned or logical e.g. interface vlan (and IP address assigned).

GT70-0NC SSD upgrade with Super RAID
Hello.
I have MSI GT70-0NC-51US laptop. It does not have RAID right now, but I purchased it with a thought in mind that I’d be upgrading it to Super RAID 0 as it was advertised, as some variations of this model already have Super RAID 0. Now I am ready to do it. This laptop has 750GB HDD and primary 128GB SSD. I will be replacing my current SSD with 2 new identical mSATA SSDs. What do I need for that? Will I be able to just plug 2 SSDs? Do I need to purchase RAID card from MSI? Which? How? And where do I get if I need it?
Please help.
Thank you.Quote from: john_the_lizard on 17-August-13, 05:46:07
This what MSI is saying "MSI Tech. 08/16/2013 After verification, since you did not purchase the SuperRAID model (SuperRAID is an option) the SuperRAID card is not available with this unit. Only models that came with RAID setup contains SuperRAID card. However, you can still do SuperRAID using 2x 2.5" SSD. Let us know if you have any questions, thank you. "
What does this mean? Really?
According to their web site from my model profile " Super RAID with 2 SSD RAID0 gives you over 800MB/s storage speed!!
The first Super RAID design—one notebook with two SSD mSATA RAID0 units, is yet another world first courtesy of MSI. Two mSATA SSDs and one HDD can be installed in the same laptop without the need to expand the size of the laptop, increasing read, write, and saving speeds.
*Please contact your local dealer for final sku"
Is this a lie?
Please help
It most likely is.
I don't believe that the GT70 0NC and GT70 0NE motherboards are different.
I wish I could take my laptop apart right now and show you, but basically, the SuperRaid and the normal SATA adapter plug into a connector on the motherboard. This connector actually has support for 2 x SATA disks. If you use the SuperRaid, you can use both SATA channels. If you use the normal SATA adapter, you only utilize 1 of the SATA channels (and the other is unused, and cannot be used). Since both of these adapters have the same plug going into the motherboard, one can assume that EVERY GT70 laptop has support for the SuperRaid ADAPTER, just not every laptop comes with the superraid adapter (such as your laptop).
Most likely, you'll have to see if you can search online and find someone selling the GT70 SuperRaid adapter, and buy that. Maybe talk to some resellers, usually they will sell you the parts as well. -
Hi All,
I found an x4604-GWY and after checking all the documentation I could find, I think it is supported
in my configuration (4506, SUP-IV, IOS version) but my switch just tells me it is an unsupported module.
Was this hardware support removed from a particular IOS version? I could not find anything in the release
notes stating such. I should mention I know next to nothing about the 4604, other than the two data sheets
(one labeled as 4000 AGM, one labeled as 4500 AGM, and the configuration guide for the 4224)
The AGM appears to attempt to power up, the DSP LEDs are lit up, but the status light of the line card
itself is off. Not red, not green, just off. I'm going to pull the crash cart out today and hook up to the
console of the 4604 and see if there is anything to be gleaned there, but I saw there is some knowledge
of this thing on the forums, hoping someone may have insight.
Thanks In Advance!

When you are in the rommon mode just type confreg and respond to the prompts as explained in the following link.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps663/products_password_recovery09186a00800945f7.shtml
Once you do that the switch should boot without the config and from there proceed with the other usual pw recovery procedures.
Hope that helps!
