Rookie install problems. Help!

Hi there,
After just getting my linux machine up, I have started what
looks like will be a long arduous install of O8. Bear with me...
Some of these questions may be more Linux than Oracle
1) I have searched the CD and cannot find the oratab.sh file
referenced in the installation instructions. Anyone know where
this is?
2) the instructions say to start the installer program by just
typing 'install' with no parameters, while it quite clearly
requires some. Should the destination directory be my
oracle_home?
3) when trying to create my mount points, I made my directories,
and then tried to create symbolic links to the off of root. i.e.
mkdir /usr/local/u01
ln -s /usr/local/u01 /u01
This seems to work fine. I can change to / and see the
directory. However, when I try to change to the directory, I
get a message something like "maximum number of links exceeded"
Any help appreciated. Please echo any response to my email if
it's not too much trouble.

Upgrade install problems - help please!

I’m having problems upgrading my iMac from OSX v. 10.2.8 to Tiger. ‘Just put the disc in and follow the instructions’, they said cheerily in the shop!
The first couple of attempts the install crashed at the ‘Destination Drive’ stage. We have since verified and repaired hard disk. We then managed to proceed and chose to "upgrade" on the hard drive. The process started well and spent some time verifying both the installion disk and the location drive.
The system seemed to start installing (and had been working away for 10 minutes or so) until the disk drive made nasty clunking noises, the coloured spinning wheel comes up and it crashes again. Error logs have been produced each time. After that point, it seems to have wiped all our internet connection details. So, posting this from work and hoping to get some replies so I can check in and try again at home tonight!
It is now crashing at the ‘Destination Drive’ stage again even though we have re-verified and repaired hard disk (there were no repairs req'd). I have checked that we have got enough disk space and have backed up files (although not internet account details – grrr).
Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that our system requirements are OK. We have an iMac G4 with superdrive, 512mb RAM, 80GB hard drive, no 3rd party cards, currently running 10.2.8.
I do have the full DVD - bought from an Apple shop, not coming with any other hardware.
I had actually already seen your 'Decision Tree' from another post. I note that you recommend an Archive and Install from 10.2.x, but at the moment we can't get past the destination drive part to choose that option!
I think the next thing we need to try from your procedure is to run DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro 4. Which means I'll have to reset internet settings so that I can get them! (Checking from work it seems your TechTool link does not work - searching on Micromat, I'm not sure which version we would need to use - possibly Classic??) Are these available for free? I'm a bit loath to throw money at the problem just yet... especially when it's not certain that it will solve the problem anyway. If we do this, you state - "Make sure you use the latest version, older versions might not be compatible with Tiger!" - do you mean even if they are not compatible with our current operating system? Sorry for all the questions!
No doubt I'll be posting again after I've tried that!

Install problems - help needed desperately for new Java user

I have been trying to install Java SE Development Kit 6 - Version 1.6.0_13. Initially I could not get the javac process to work no matter what I tried. After uninstalling and reinstalling numerous times I now have it so that my javac will rewrite my file from a .java to a .class file. Now when I try to execute my Hello.class file I am getting an error message....
Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
Can anyone please help me fix this? I was really anxious to learn programming but all of these setbacks are really frustrating. I have basic books to help when I am up and running but nothing helps you with problems with installations.

CF7 Install Problems - Help

I am trying to install CF 7 on a server in which CF MX (6.1)
is running and thus import my 6.1 environment into 7.
I have performed the CF 7 install with the CF 6.1 services
running and with them not running. In both instances the install
process gets to the last step ("Import Settings") where it states
"Importing your Coldfusion settings. This might take a few
iminutes". I have waited 30 minutes for this process to complete
and it never does. If I try to go back into the CF adminstrator
after the admin login it goes back to the same screen (""Importing
your Coldfusion settings") and just sits there.
Any idea on how to solve this problem?

Videora install problem helpful information

If you downloaded videora but when you going to install it comes up with an error
I.e. application failed to start
Then a possible solution to this is to download
.net framework
you can get it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157 -034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en
Then hopefully when videora is installed on your computer it will be able to load up without any errors

problem!
OAS does not run on Windows 95.
OAS runs on many real server operating systems,
but Windows 95 is not a robust platform for OAS.

CS5 Install problems - Help!!!

I am attempting to install CS5 design standard into an imac running MacOSX 10.5.8. (Have made sure I got all updates etc on the OS X).
When I insert disc 1 and try to start install.app I get the message ""You can't open the application "Install" because it is not supported on this architecture." I am not very proficient with non-standard vernacular, so please answer in simple terms :-) All help deeply appreciated.

The requirements for CS5 are quite explicit in all product literature and on Adobe's website. The Macintosh version of CS5 including all its components require Intel processors. The PowerPC architecture that Apple has not sold for a number of years now, including all G4 and G5 PowerPC-based systems is not supported at all. There is no "workaround" to this. I am sorry that you didn't notice these requirements prior to your purchase.
Adobe normally allows up to 30 days to return software. Unless you can migrate to a new Intel processor-based Macintosh in the near future, you should return the software for a full refund.

Rookie install, please help (xhost / display issues)

First time on Unix, first install of Oracle - sorry if these are ignorant questions.
I have a SunV440, Solaris 10 installed. There is no graphics adapter - currently running the console output to a random windows box through hyperterminal via the RJ45 to serial connector. Then I have my PC, where I've downloaded cygwin. I have no idea how to get Xhost/display settings configured so I can get visual output on my PC as I do the install. I am currently going through the documented prerequisite from the Oracle documentation. When I attempt to run xhost on the server console, I get "unable to open display". I am following the instructions here (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b28053/toc.htm#BAGFEJFI ) and I'm on step 8, substep 2 - Configuring the oracle User's environment.
When I run xhost at the local console I get "unable to open display" - is it b/c there is no graphics adapter in the system? Do I have to add a graphics adapter to install remotely?
And then it's unclear to me what commands to run on the console, and what commands to run on my PC (in cygwin). Help!

I had the same porblem but I got the solution like this.
I connect to server using cygwin
when you login as default user, In your home directory
follow the steps
echo $DISPLAY
you will get the display o/p of ur localhost
localhost:10.0(in my case)
ls -la
then you will find .Xauthority file
chmod 777 .Xauthority
now loging as oracle
sudo su - oracle
passwd
now copy .Xuthority from ur default home to your oracle home
cp /home/sling/.Xauthority . (in my case)
now you must export display to what ever output when you got when you
did echo $DISPLAY in your default home
export DISPLAY= localhost:10.0 (in my case)
xclock
now you should able to run the installer

I had the same issue and I'm running Windows 7. Tried working with technical support for several hours but they were no help. They just had me doing the same things over and over, offering no real answers. I finally got fed up and have decided to return my product for a full refund.

Please try again after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
Step 1
Reset your computer’s PRAM.
Step 2
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.
Step 3
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups.
Step 4
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider to have the machine tested.

Camera raw won't open my raw files from bridge. Mac user, camera, Nikon D800, latest camera raw update is installed. Help!!

I don't get a photo preview in bridge of my raw files, just the NEF file thing. Then when I click to open them I get a message that says: "If you are attempting to open a raw file from a digital camera, make sure you have the latest Camera Raw update installed via Help > Updates" "If the problem persists, visit the following link for more information: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111". I can't seem to figure out what to do! Help Please!?

Usually the problem with a newer Nikon camera is that the NEF files have been transferred or viewed with obsolete Nikon software, like Nikon Transfer for View NX, and those change something in the header of the raw file that makes it unrecognizable to Adobe products.
For new images, the solution is to either stop using Nikon products to transfer and view your files or update your Nikon products to be as new as your camera.

Hi, I'm having a huge and urgent problem...
I'm a student and I'm at a company that gave me LabVIEW 2012 to install in my computer, my problem is the following:
My CD's have written "NI Developer Suite 2012" I play the CD and it keep's saying it is 2012 but when I'm choosing the packages to install it only have 2011 packages and I installed loads of them and spent loads of time installing it and now only LabVIEW 2011 is installed... I need LabVIEW 2012 and I just can't install it :/
Help please?

Very common misconception there. If you have NI Developer Suite 2012 DS1, that has LabVIEW 2011 SP1 on it. Developer Suite 2012 DS2 will have LabVIEW 2012 on it. The latest Dveloper Suite set is 2013 DS1, which will have LabVIEW 2012 SP1 on it.

Question: I have purchased a Adobe Captivate 4 license and I have downloaded the setup file from adobe site and installed in a x86 windows XP machine which is joined in a windows 2003 server ADS.At first I installed as trial version once installed I provided the key after all a windows will come up with asking the license agreement I click accept but Nothing will happen nothing will run in the system, also I cant uninstall when clicking uninstall nothing is happen .I have tried installing by creating a folder under the program files as adobe2 then I can start the program but after a while or afte many time but this doesn't help .I have the same problem in other machines too. can any one help me?r a day it will again as the license agreement windows and I selected accept then the same problem I have tried reinstalling

CS6 Installer halts when installing Adobe Help

CS6 Creative Suite Design & Web Premium Trial downloads, extracts, but the installer halts when it hits "Currently Installing Adobe Help", and the install time keeps increasing indefinitely. I have tried over and over, re-downloading, using the direct download links, running the creative suite cleaner, the Adobe Support tool, restarting my computer, etc. etc. etc. It does this same thing when I have tried to install Dreamweaver CS6 on its own, but I was able to download & install Lightroom 4 with no problems whatsoever. What can I do at this point?

I too am having this problem, and killing InstallAdobeHelp.exe DOES seem to allow the installer to continue. Thank you for that tip, Dan!

A couple notes:
I am installing CS6 Master Collection trial.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I had CS4 & CS5 Master Collection installed (non-trial)
I tried removing both, with no luck.
I updated Download Manager and Adobe Air just previous to installing.
I have tried restarting, installing with and without internet access/activation (shouldn't really matter) - Attempted installation about 6 times.
Running InstallAdobeHelp from command line using the same call the installer does (InstallAdobeHelp.exe CommandLine: appVersion=4.0.244 appId=chc pubId=4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1 installerArg1=-silent installerArg2=-eulaAccepted installerArg3=-programMenu installerArg4=AdobeHelp.air) Gives the same result - an empty window appears and never goes away.
Canceling the installer doesn't kill InstallAdobeHelp.exe, it will keep running in the background until killed - even if the installer is forcefully stopped, and will even run 4 or 5 InstallAdobeHelp.exe processes at the same time, if you keep trying to install.
Big idea: I saw something in the log about already having AdobeHelp 1.0.0.0 installed (Probably from CS4/5?) I'm guessing this is causing the conflict:
