Rookie Mac User Video Import Question

Hello,
I would like to import video clips from a camera as if it were another drive (like I do on a PC). In other words, copy from the camera to a drive location of my choice. Is there a way to do this? It seems I can only import through Final Cut to an event (or one of the othe resident applications like imovie etc).
Thanks,
GL

yes, I think so. what kind of connector does the camera have? Firewire or something else? . You'd probably need some kind of video capture application. I haven't tried this one, so I can't speak for its effectiveness:  FireRecord http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/36425/firerecord. I've only really done DV thru firewire with imovie, and I could save it somewhere on my hard drive.  Oh, I think I get it-- that you'd plug in the camera, you could see the video clip and drag n' drop to your hard drive somewhere. Maybe I'm wrong, but as far as  i know it's realtime....

  • Can aim users and .mac users video/audio chat with each other?

today was a crazy day with ichat. two of my friends were able to video chat 1 on 1. my mac is qualified to handle 3-way or 4-way chats. when they invite me, the bubble pops up. i hit accept and the loading spindle keeps on spinning for minutes until it just denies me entrance. they get an error saying i never accepted, so as soon as they invite me, they don't get any other response back.
could it be that i am on the AIM network and both of them are on the .mac network?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.8ghz, 1.5gig ram, 3rd party camcorder, latest iChat. router installed.

can aim users and .mac users video/audio chat with each other?
Yes. Apple does not have its own publicly available IM service; iChat uses the AIM network, and there are few functional differences between AIM and .Mac screen names. If they are using a client other than iChat, there may be interoperability issues with audio and video chats, or the other client may not support those types of chatting.

  • Gah! Another Mac -- PC Video Chat question

    Diagnosing the following:
    A = AIM 6.8, Windows XP
    B = iChat 4.0.5 (608)
    C = iChat 4.0.7
    A <--> B no problems video chat
    B <--> C " "
    A <--> C argh!
No connection can be established between A & C. As a quick work-around, C downloaded AIM 6.8 for PC onto a virtual PC (is that what it's called when a Mac runs Windows?). Then, A --> C video & audio, and A <-- C audio only, no video.
A downloaded AIM 5.9. Still no connection established with C.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    HI,
EZ Jim (Another Level 4) once ran a Blog on iSight of which I now have a copy and keep somewhat updated.
The Page on this topic is Here
It contains the Quote that is linked to Above (In the "Welcome to Apple Discussions" post)
The whole page dates back to iChat 2 and using AIM 5.5 and AIM 5.9 in some cases.
At one time EZ Jim and I were answering a lot of Posts with "What If your Girlfriend Lives a Long Way Away" sorts of Questions.
This page contains two posts that have been somewhat edited to show Updates.
The first is from EZ Jim and covers all the things that should be done (although somewhat from an iChat 3ish starting point to AIM 5.9(ish) on XP)
The Second post is by another former Regular Poster, James A.Weston who posted on how to allow non Microsoft apps through the then new XP Service Pack 2 Firewall.
It now contains updates to refer to AIM 6.x
I run XP in Boot Camp.
I have a version of AIM for PCs at version 6.1
    For me this works.
For my view point the AIM site then brought out AIM 6.5 next.
In the first link the EZ Jim page contains link to a site that you can download older versions of AIM for the PC from.
I have not tried some of these others.
Some I have not even seen posts here about either so I am not sure all were on General Release.
    The Summary so far is.
Vista can only install an Version of AIM that uses the Real Time Codecs (AIM 6.5 and AIM 6.8 as far as we can tell)
The Real Time Codecs will not allow these versions of AIM to Video chat with Older versions of AIM (5.5 and 5.9 for certain) - or iChat on a Mac or Trillian (An AIM client for PCs) that all use the same or compatible codecs from the AIM 5.5 to AIM 5.9 (iChat 2,3 and 4)
    Other Options.
This pages state a list of apps subdivided into various groups based on function.
    Other Applictaions
The Panel on the left lists the items/apps
The Panel on the right give a bit more info
For Example 1-3 are text based only Third Party IM apps that in some case have Multiple service capabilities
4 Is AIM for Mac on its Own
5 through 8 are other apps that can video and need both ends to get their own Versions (Cross Platform Apps)
9 through 12 are Web browser base sites that do Video Chat by Allowing Flash access to the Camera (It is effectively a Cross Platform Solution)
13 Specifically mentions Trillian as an Alternative to PC users.
I have not heard whether this can be installed on Vista.
Triilian does for PC users what AdiumX and ProteusX do for Macs but does Video chats with the various services as well. (although not cross service chats (MSN to Jabber say) )
14 and 15 are the closest anyone has got to doing Video (No Audio) to an MSN Buddy.
    Summary of Other Options.
It is a question of Cross Platform Apps or Web browser based options.
    (Unfortunately NOT iChat)
In some areas of this I do not yet have complete info about things like Trillian on Vista for example.
    Notes.
My G4/1Ghz Dual processor was bought in 2001 an came with Jaguar and OS 9 Installed.
It is currently running Leopard at 10.5.6
It will and does run PhotoShop CS.
This length of life it not likely to be found on PCs and therefore AIM may not have any real plans to get AIM 6.8+ to work with the Older versions of AIM, despite what the "What do I need for Real Time" message says.
So, Yes, I have some Info on this.
I hope this summary of what it contains helps

  • Video import question

i just recently got a new fifth generation 30GB video ipod. my question is: is there any way i can get videos from windows media player to itunes? like if i download them from a website? also, will i need a converter for this or only for DVDs? i'd appreciate any answer.
    Thanks
    windows   Windows XP

I don't know if it will work for .wmf files but if you import the video into itunes and then right click (windows, not sure for MAC) there should be an option for converting to ipod. If that doesn't work I use www.imtoo.com they have some good software for converting files. There's another people seem to like but I started with this one and it works fine. They have one for converting to MP4 files and one that converts DVD to MP4.
    Good luck......Eric

  • How do I install Windows Xp - Rookie Mac user

I will 1st apologize for asking this question, probably for the 1000 time on this site.
I am very new to the "mac" way, and need to install Windows XP so that I can run Office 07' for work. And, after dropping $3000 on a MBP, I am very hesitant to just stick the disk in and try to figure it out on my own.
I understand the Boot Camp concept, but could partition something if my life depended on it.
If anyone could post a link directly to where I need to go and read the directions, that would be great
Thank you all for you patience as I drink the "mac kool-aid" and convert from PC
    Chris

First, you should read the Boot Camp manual carefully and follow it in detail.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_CampInstall-Setup.pdf
Second, you should be aware of the points that I have noted below.
You should format your Windows partition using the NTFS format. Fat 32 will not support files larger than 3.5 GB.
To access your Mac hard drive from Windows, you would want to check out MacDrive 7, which is really good.
    http://www.mediafour.com
Under NTFS, you will be able to read your Windows drive from your Mac drive. However, if you want to write to it, you will need the following software from Paragon.

  • I-Mac G5 Video Adapter Question

I have an I-Mac G5 17" and I am running Final Cut pro on it. I bought the video adapter so I can view the output on a television, but it only shows a mirror of my desktop. How do I make it only show the output which would be full screen of the video I edited?

Thanks for the help... It was more than I got from apple's customer service. I have a sony vx-2100 camera. So I would just run the firewire from the computer into the camera and then run it to the tv? Is there any type of setting I have to turn on in either final cut, the camera or the computer so it knows to only show the output and not mirror my desktop?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • New Mac user with some questions!

Hello everyone, I fairly new to mac! (I came from the Dark Side....PC)And here is how this happen. I was searching a local web page of people that sell used computer and searched for a couple of days when I came across a G5 1.6 being sold for parts (DEAD G5 No Power issue), everything was in it but the HD. I thought I would pick it up for the $150.00 the seller was asking thinking I could possible purchase parts to fix it! LOL well that was a BIG heck no!! Well remember I have $150.00 in this already. Well after seeing all the problems everyone was having with the G5's and the dreaded no power "DEAD G5" threads every where I was getting a little worried if I wasted the money on a doorstop. I talked to a few people and look around on the net again to see how much used "working" G5 1.6 were going for, I saw a few that were inflated in price and saw some that were fair in price.
So with the research I did (and still a little worried if I did the right ting) I took the G5 to the apple store and had them look at it. They told me it could be the Logic board, CPU, and or PSU and was given a paper with the parts and labor as a est. $1083.00 was the price for the above parts to be replaced, I felt like I was being robbed. But I told them to look at it and call me with the issues before any work was done!
Ok as of right now I have $150.00 in it already plus the $100.00 Diag fee. No biggie at least the case is worth $250.00 for a PC case!(LOL) Just joking guys!!
The next day the local Apple store called me and told me it was the logic board, and when they get the new board in they would be able to test the CPU. So I told them to replace the Logic board.... Later that day the call came in saying the CPU and PSU were good and they installed Tiger on it for me for free. So far at the 1st visit to the apple store when I dropped off the G5 I was like dang I'm not enjoying this, but now afer a logic board replacement and level 2 tech it came to $535.00.
    So
    $150.00 (Purcased from seller)
    $ 60.00 (160gb SATA HD)
    $535.00 (Logic board & Level 2 Labor)
    $745.00 total cost
    Now here is the question!
Was it a smart thing to get the logic board replaced?
Will this G5 1.6 handle Final Cut Pro for 1080i footage captured with a Sony HDV-fx7?
Be Honest with me, I want to know if I was a goof ball or not!!

    Hi MikePerry-
In accounting terms, your expense to repair the machine is considered "sunk cost." Even if you got totally hosed (and you did not) what's done is done.
You can check eBay for comparable setups.
This setup will be able to handle the stated editing needs.
I don't know you well enough to fairly establish any goofball factor

  • Upgrading mac pro video card questions

I want to upgrade my video card, I currently have a 7300 gt, and my mac pro is a 2007. Will any video card that uses the same type of pci slot work or does the card have to be specially made for macs. Also what would be the best upgrade for my mac, i read the 8800 gtx wont work, will radeon 2600 work?

Yes, the video card has to be made to work with Mac Pros and I upgraded my 2007 Mac with the 2600 XT and it works great. A version of the 8800 is suppose to be in the works, but a release date is unknown.

  • Flash for Mac "Quicktime Video" format question

I used Mac to create a video in Flash 8.0. When I export the
clip, i used "Quicktime Video" format (not the "Quicktime" option).
But when I play the file in Windows, I couldn't get it to open or
convert to other formats such as .AVI. Is there a codec for
"Quicktime Video" to work under windows XP? Please help.
    Thanks.

Hi s2foster2, well I am certainly willing to try to help you, just don't know if I can be much help because I am not very
familiar with Mac. I was able to help a couple of people but that was due to them being able to send me screenshots.
I understand Flash Player but where programs, add ons, ActiveX Controls, even where the Flash files are located I don't know. I do know Mac has a Library:-)
Some new information has come to light tonight however, by one of our most helpful people on the forum. This was about
    the 3rd party content, etc.
I looked at your FF add ons and you have the SWF and it's correct. Do you know where the Flash files are and could you
post back all of the Flash files with version numbers? That will tell me if Flash Player is installed with the correct files.
We can have a go at this if you want. I can tell you what info I need as long as you know where to find it, because I don't.
    Let me know,
    thanks,

  • Soon to be iMac user with important question on External HD I used for PC

So I will be buying an iMac in a week or so when I get my federal return. I have been a PC user all my life. I have 3 external hard drives which are a few years old and are still working fine. Can I hook up my external hard drives to the mac and work on my photos with out any problems or would I need to reformat?
If I reformat then I'm screwed cause then I would lose years of work. I do have a mozy account with all my stuff backed up too but its for a PC. I talked with their customer support and they said if I switch my account over to the imac I would need to start over again.
Is there any software you can recommend where I wont lose my work? I will also be buying either a 1tb or 2tb hard drive and I want to transfer my files over to that and retire my other hard drives.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi justins25
It depends on how the External Drives are formatted, but either way you should have no problems moving your data to the iMac. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518
Both platforms can read and write to MS-DOS FAT32 and you should be fine for moving music, photos, doc's and movies under 4GB either way.
The iMac can read files on a Windozs NTFS formatted drive, but can not write to it.

  • Using an external hard drive if a rookie Mac user and computer illiterate.

I recently purchased an entry level Macbook (£699) and was unable, financially, to opt for a bigger hard drive (it's just 80GB) and so decided to supplement my storage with an Iomega MiniMax 360GB external hard drive from the Apple Store. I have no idea what to do with it and so as an illiterate, computer wise, require some lay-man's terms instruction. How do I get stuff (music etc) on to it and back again? Can I leave my iTunes program on the Macbook if the music files are on the external Iomega? If I double click on music files on the external Iomega will they automatically launch iTunes and open or do I have to keep transferring files back and forth between internal and external drives? With all of my music on the external Iomega what do I do if I want to take music away with me, half a dozen albums or so, and how do I do this? Sorry to be so obtuse and inane, but it takes all kinds to make a world!!!

essentially you plug your external drive in and drag the files you want onto its image ...which is copying them After you copy something over to the external, you can delete it from your main drive - which frees up space.
This link will help you set up multiple itunes libraries if you would like...
