Rookie needs rules of thumb re: P-Pro or Soundbooth to edit audio of a video?

Hello, I'm a rookie having just purchased the CS5 Master Collection and I'm editing the video of my first skydive last week. I want to add an mp3 music track to the freefall section etc.
I've watched most of the Lynda.com "essential training" videos for both Premiere Pro and Soundbooth, but I'm still wondering which application would be best.
What are some basic guidelines or rules to decide where to edit the audio for a video? For this project, all I need to do is make the mp3 audio track start about a minute into the video and I also want to take (copy) a few short sections of the audio and insert them in different spots. Other than changing the volume level of the music at different points (which is explained pretty well in the Lynda.com tutorials), nothing really that fancy.

Edit: Oops! I just thought of another question: how do I convert the video file so I can play it on a Blu-Ray/DVD player and big screen TV? Right now, I can only play the DVD/video the skydiving folks sent to me on my PC.

I expect my 5.5 upgrade in a few days, so it's good to hear Audition is coming! (But now I have to forget what I learned in Soundbooth? ;-) )
I don't know how to convert an mp3 to PCM/WAV or even what that is (I do know what a .wav file is, however), but I'll look into it. But how can a mp3 go to a larger .wav file? I get how an .mp3 is made by reducing the samples and file size, but how can you go the other direction?
On the other hand, the "Instant HD" software you mentioned must be doing something similar with video in taking a smaller file and making it HD, right? So, does this mean I have to invest another $100 to make camcorder videos play on my Blu-Ray/DVD player? Dang, my wallet is gettin awful light these days, but it sure would be cool to watch my jump on the big screen, you know?! Will it look good after conversion or will it be a bit pixelated?
And don't worry about me: even though going skydiving again is all I think about (WARNING!: Like bungee jumping, it's habit forming!), that wallet I mentioned is keeping me safe and warm in front of my PC!

I agree with LowLister, the best option for you to share the video online is to upload it to your online storage account for example : Box, Dropbox, SkyDrive (All of them provide free storage beginning from 2GB).
You can upload the files which you want to share in this online storage and then they have sharing options in which you'll will get the link of the file to be sent and send the email. You're good to go!
Tip : You can store multiple files for backup purposes.

Premiere Pro CC crashes when editing audio- any solutions?

Adobe Premiere Pro CC crashes nearly every time I try to edit audio, keyframe it in certain spots, etc, etc, with the error message that there has been an "unexpected problem" and the program must "force quit." Sometimes my work is saved, sometimes it isn't. And then I have to re-name my saved file, so I often end up with upwards of 15 different project files because I cannot edit audio without this program crashing. I see I'm not the only one--what is Adobe doing to fix this bug-riddled program? It's impossible to get anything done!
I'm using this program on a MAC, 6-Core Intel Xeon Processor. MAC OS X Lion 10.7.5.
I'm ready to lose my mind.

I am having a very similar experience.....I have been working in Adobe Premiere Pro for well over 8 years and have always had issues with crashes when working with audio files, keyframing, transition placement, trimming and so on. I have had nightmares with some projects that I am having crashes every change I do and it seems once you get an issue with a project it only gets worst. I have worked on a number of different systems in regards to hardware and get the same issues, OS has been Windows 7 64bit for number of years. I would have expected Adobe to have been able to smooth this out by now but it just keeps rearing its ugly head when I`m on a deadline crunch.
I try to never work with Mp3s and always request wav but it doesn't seem to matter in the long run.
Just wanted to let you know you are not the only one and I am having a serous issue with this problem once again!
Please help Adobe....audio is an issue with Premiere Pro for a lot of us....thanks!

Have I set some parameter in Premiere Pro that has removed my audio on some videos?

I recently installed Premiere Pro CC as a trial. I started learning to use the program with a particular clip with a .mpg extension. At first, sound was not an issue, but now, suddenly I have no sound with this clip, and when I play clip on this computer outside Premiere Pro, it no longer plays with sound. When I play the clip on another computer, sound is no problem. Additionally other .mpg clips no longer have sound.
I have DL'd and installed the K-lite codecs to no avail. Other sounds, mp3s, computer prompt sounds, all work no problem, but not these particular .mpg files. Any suggestions, please? Thank you.

Something fundamental has changed - the clip will no longer provide audio within PP, or outside when played by any media player including VLC, Irfan, and Winamp. The same clip removed to another machine plays with no problems.

Rules of thumb for sizing an Oracle BPM 11g deployment

Anyone out there have some rules of thumb they are using to size out an environment for Oracle BPM 11g? I know processing power can vary widely for process complexity and amount of data floating around. Still, I get asked questions like how much processing power do I need for this solution? I have a current client looking at 2500+ potential human workflow users with 1000 concurrent at peak load. Short of running some performance test myself and extrapolating numbers I am at a loss. Hoping some others can chime in with some thoughts.

an update... my rule of thumb for 50 users has proven to be a bit high. Looks to be 30-40 per core when you split out the BPMN engine from other computing intensive processes such as the ESB. Without splitting up overall SOA/BPM functionality over multiple servers concurrent user counts of various technology really takes a hit.

Rule of thumb for CACHE_SIZE

I do have a system outsourced, where the DB (MAXDB 7.6.05) runs on a single SLES 10 server.
This server has got 16 GB RAM. The CACHE_SIZE is configured to 20 GB (2500000 pages) and a top shows me, that from the 40 GB swap 20 GB are used (file system cache is so low, that it can be ignored) ... and swapd runs with at least 6% CPU all the time.
Is this a good situation? Not for me! Does anybody have a rule of thumb for CACHE_SIZE?
I would say 75 % of RAM should be the highest value... any othe suggestion?

Cache must always fit in the physical RAM. The purpose of the cache is to hold data in the memory that it doesn't need to be read again and again from the disk. If you now configure that cache bigger than the physical available RAM (minus application minus operating system) the system will start swapping/paging in and out and hence slowing down the full system.
Ideally the machine is not swapping at all and all data is in the memory.

Best book, website, or training for Illustrator 'rules of thumb'

Hey everyone,
To give some background I am terrible at art (no eye for it). Though I have recently been trying to learn Illustrator with a book and some online training videos (lynda). I am grasping some basics concepts on 'How to use the program' and what everything does.
Though since I never took any graphic design course (I'm an engineer) I don't know what types of rules of thumb there are for making basic figures or pictures. What font is best? What type of arrows should I use? Width of stroke? Those are just basic examples of the type of questions I am always asking. So how do I take my basic knowledge of the actual program, and learn how to use those correctly?
I'm an engineer making fairly basic diagrams or drawings for my research, but a slick drawing can really make you stand out. So that is where I'm coming from, I'm also a total begineer so please keep that in mind, I'm looking for more basic advice at the moment. For example below is one of the first drawings I have made in illustrator. Scientific work doesn't need to be too flashy, but any sources/locations would be great.

There are a multitude of things you can do to foster your artistic intuition.
1) Google. If you do a quick search for the "principles of design" you should come up with explanations and examples of just that. Here are a few links I came up with:
- GD Basics gives you a brief rundown on design principles and elements as well as exercise prompts you can use to practice and apply what you've learned.
- Learn the Basics is not nearly as elegant as the site above, but gives you real-world examples to show how art and design principles are applied.
2) Take a class. I'm not sure if this is something that could possibly fit into your schedule, but you can take a basic art class at a community college or similar organization and it will help you tremendously. Being in a class will not only force you to practice and learn but you will have the support of your peers, which are generally at all skill levels.
3) Find art and design you like, and take inspiration. I don't mean copy, but if you find an image where you appreciate the line weight, or the contrast of colors, or what have you, save it to an inspiration folder on your desktop. Figuring out what is effective and tasteful is something that takes time and lots of exposure to outside sources.

Rule of Thumb in using Infinitely Thin conductor in EM simulation?

For conductor loss, both thin and thick metal will work pretty much the same. The most obvious place where thickness matters is with coupling between metal on the same layer. The penalty you pay for metal thickness is that AXIEM must solve for more unknowns, somewhere between 2 and 3x the amount.
At some point the coupling due to the metal thickness has a big effect on the coupling.   It is hard to say an exact rule of thumb when to make the switch as it will matter how far away your ground plane is on the bottom and how thick the metal is.    What I suggest you do is setup a microstrip coupled line simulation using the technology you are using and then sweep the distance between the lines for both a thick and thin metal case and see when the two answers converge.
A couple other points.
1. Check the option for using edge meshing when using thick metal. For the most accurate answer and a good comparison, you will want to make sure you are edge meshing the thick metal.
2. I have not seen the ratio of dielectric thickness to copper thickness matter much, but you could run a similar experiment, just seeing if it matters.   The biggest issue here is making sure you get the distance between your ground plane and the trace right. If you are using the boundary of the structure for the ground, this usually isn't a problem. But if you have ground planes at other locations in your stackup, you will need to adjust dielectric thicknesses depending on if you are using thin or thick metal to make sure the thickness of the dielectric is correct.

Jaggy text rules of thumb

I'm wondering if there are some general rules of thumb about avoiding jaggy text in Motion. Most of the projects I've done have text moving around or using special effects, so the jaggys haven't been that noticeable.
However, now I'm working on a project with just white text against a black background, so the jaggys really stand out. I've tried various fonts, sizes, etc. but can't get smooth, crisp lines. I've read through several threads in this forum, but can't find anything that gives some general rules to follow.
I'm working in a standard NTSC DV format . . . 724 x 480.

I only do this as a hobby for friends and family, so I don't have any technical specs I have to meet, but I do want my work to look as best as possible.
The setup in my home/office has changed, and I forgot about using a tv as a monitor of what my work will look like on tv . . .I'll get that set up ASAP. I am trying to stay with simple sans serif fonts to reduce the jaggys.
You've both mentioned that NTSC DV is a terrible format . . .understood. All of my footage is still shot on a mini DV camera, so I've just stayed with that format. Should I use a different format once I have my video loaded or will that make the video look worse? I usually incorporate filters and other effects, so maybe that would hide problems with changing the DV to a different format. (I'm really out of my league with that guess.)
In the meantime, I'm seeing jaggys in Motion itself . . .not even getting to FC yet. Maybe all of this is related to the NTSC DV format.
Mark, I had to laugh when I read your disclosure comment. The fact is that I probably owe you a lot of money 'cause I watch your MacBreak podcasts frequently. Speaking of which, I just opened one of those podcasts for the fun of it and noticed that that "MacBreak" logo and other text are jaggy. Maybe that's because of the compressed format that has to be used for videos like this.

Question regarding the rule of thumb regarding Exchange proc cores ratio to GC proc cores

I am studying towards my MSCE Messaging for Exchange 2013 and came across on CBT nuggets a statement regarding a rule of thumb when it comes to processor cores on Exchange 2013 server to GC
so Greg Shields from CBT nuggets says that the ratio should be
4:1 on x86 domain controllers
8:1 on x64 domain controllers.
So is he talking about 1 mailbox server role with 8 processor cores to 1 processor core on a x64 domain controller? what if there is already a heap of servers using that GC? In our datacentre we have 2 x64 domain controllers but also a whole range of servers
on that server network.
Also what if you have 2 mailbox server roles? are we then talking 16 : 2 ?
Hope someone can help clarify this.

When you calculate required GC cores, the ratio 1:8 applies to the cores required to support active mailboxes ("Mailbox role processor cores handling active load") and not to all cores physically available on Exchange server.
So, for example, if you have 32 total cores on an Exchange server but only 16 of them are actually needed to support active mailboxes (as determined by the calculator), you will need only 16/8=2 GC cores to support this Exchange server's AD queries.

I'll kick off on this one.
I don't think so.
I reckon it's about what you are doing and how you want to go about building your site.
The rule of thumb really is that the more general a CSS style is the less specific your rule needs to be.
You can for instance declare your font-family in a rule for your <body> element and that will affect all your <p> elements if they are otherwise unstyled.
But if you only want to style <p> elements that are children of <div id="content"> then you would use a rule on #content p
I think you might like to do a bit of research on CSS Specificity and CSS Inheritance. That might help.
I also think that the more CSS you do the more that you will develop your own rules of thumb.

Thanks Community! I solved the problem. In fact it was not a problem but lack of understanding. These guys at Apple are way ahead in thir thinking. I will try to explain as short as I can.
In Lion, ihe Prefferences/Display show only two choices: 6-7 steps of resolution and some color tab. No two screens, no two display to overlap, nothing for us to do. "That was the problem"! Everything is automatic.
When I connected the HDMI cable to the Miniport into a T-bolt slot, the TV screen showed the "spiral galaxy" how Zyriab is calling it. In fact he gave me the best clue. That shows the connection is good. But where is the Mac Book image?
You have to drag it to the right out of the Mac Book display area, and "voila!" it will continue on the TV screen. The same with the mouse pointer, push it out ofthe Mac Book display area and you see it on the TV sreen. Good image, you can keep the max resolution, etc. The sound is still on the Book's speakers. I have to figure that out.
