Roommate only uses Windows on MacBook Air

This is not your ordinary tech problem but I felt I should post anyway to see if I would get any responses...
My roommate saw my iMac and liked the way the hardware looked so he decided to check out MacBooks. He liked the thinness and lightness of the MacBook Air and bought one replacing his Dell laptop. We soon afterwards upgraded to an AirPort Extreme for our home network. He liked how much faster it was. He also has an iPhone but he won't use iCloud. He's had the Air for at least a year now and never boots into OS X unless there is an update to download. He spends all his time using Windows with Boot Camp. It's driving me crazy because he's missing out on all the great features in OS X.
How do I get him to drop Windows completely?

VMWare and Parallels Desktop both have their fans, as does the open source VirtualBox. The two commercial virtual platforms have more bells and whistles than VB and are faster, especially in regard to graphics, but if you intend to do mostly word processing, VB is certainly doable.
It is hard to quantify the hit you take by using virtualization. If you are using a word processor or even doing light graphics work you might not notice any difference at all. It is there, but too small to be felt. OTOH, you'd notice quite a difference if you were doing video editing or playing an intense graphics game.
Luckily both VMWare and PD run in demo mode so you can test them out and see if the performance you get meets your needs. If not then BootCamp it is. BTW, I used BootCamp for several years before dumping it about 12 months ago. I'm not a PC gamer and between a faster computer and software upgrades, Parallels Desktop now fills my PC needs 100%

Saving as a PDF file for some users have been a problem.  If you boot into  Safe Mode and run iPhoto you can create undamaged PDF files.  We don't know why the problem but this is a workaround.
This problem prevents many from ordering books, calendars and cards since iPhoto creates PDF file of them for uploading and printing.  Booting into Safe Mode lets them successfully order those items.

As long as it's USB, any one will work (If you're only using it for your Mac, then use Disk Utility to Partition it as GUID/HFS+).

  • Why my Toshiba mobile hard drive (1TB) can not be used in the macbook air?

Why my Toshiba mobile hard drive (1TB) can not be used in the macbook air?

If you are speaking of the USB 3.0 Canvio, you are not alone. Call Toshiba and check on their progress in alleviating the problem. I heard they are blaming Apple, but since theirs is the only drive that exhibits this problem, I think the burden is on Toshiba.
Some users have reported that by using a micro USB 2.0 connector (see bottom picture), instead of the 3.0 that comes with the drive, that it is a workaround. Notice that the 3.0 connector has sort of a "dual head" nature to the construction. One part of it is 2.0 USB micro compatible. I've never tried it myself though.

I am currently using the original macbook air and it is running 10.5.8 since it does not have anywhere to insert a disc how do I update it to anything that is more recent than that

Keep in mind you can also use the optical drive of another computer to upgrade OS X. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2129 has information on how to do that. This works on a Windows PC as well as a Mac.

  • What is the best projector to use with a macbook air

Need a trouble free projector to use with my macbook air for showing photos and business documents , excel eyc.

If you don't mind connecting the projector directly to the Mac with an HDMI cable, any projector with an HDMI input will work. There are a very large variety to choose from. Projector People is a competent vendor that I have used and can recommend. They are knowledgeable about Macs. Describe your needs and they will make recommendations. Their prices are as good as you are likely to find anywhere else.
You will also need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. Purchase one from Monoprice. They are less than $10.

Hi, I have recently got myself a second hand computer  MAC OS X Version 10.4.11,Processor 800 MHz PowerPC G4. Have only used windows before. Unfortunately I managed to uninstall Adobe but now can't seem to reinstall as this an older computer and is not compatible with the new versions. Sorry to sound thick but really have never used Apple before. Would really appreciate any help at all. Thanks..

Windows or apple it makes no difference, if you don't have the install discs you can't install.
Did you buy the machine with Adobe (you don't say what adobe program you're talking about) installed? If so the vendor should have given you the discs or else it's technically a pirated copy. If you're talking about acrobat (which is free) then you should be able to find older versions on the adobe site.

  • I only use Windows XP, is there a version of Lightroom that will work with XP

I only use Windows XP, is there a version of Lightroom that will work with XP

Yes if you want to run Version 1....you can still download version 1.4.1 (the last update to Version 1), and your serial number would be good for that.
But if you want to run Version 2 or Version 3 you'll need to buy a new license (i.e. a new serial number), but if you have a valid serial number from any prior version you only have to pay for the upgrade license for the later version, not the full license.

  • I have purchased (veranda magazines) for my IPHONE which I would like to use on my macbook air. Do I have to repurchase these app or is there some way to get them in my macbook air with no charge?

i have purchased (veranda magazines) for my IPHONE which I would like to use on my macbook air. Do I have to repurchase these app or is there some way to get them in my macbook air with no charge?

Veranda Magazine is a free app available for iOS devices in the iOS App Store.  You then purchase a Veranda Magazine subscription from within the app.  In other words, the app itself is free, but the contents are not.
There is no way to duplicate or import this to a Mac.  Your Mac runs a totally different operating system.
iBooks can now import to Mac since OS X Mavericks came out about a month ago.  But that does not apply to magazines or iOS Newsstand publications.

    Hi ..
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
Click Delete All under Browsing Data and Settings
Back to Safari. Press Command + Option + E to empty the Safari cache.
Quit and relaunch Safari, try a video.
