Root access question
I have seen from some other postings that there is supposed to be a root password that is common to the N900. However when I try to use it, it doesn't seem to work. I see a lot of people suggesting the use of rootsh, but surely the same functionality should be achievable by just using sudo su root?
So, if there is one root password for the N900, isn't that a security hazard and consequently we should all be changing ours to something we choose?
Thanks for your help.

I have changed my root password, because I do development and require SSH access TO my phone.. but I would not be surprised if a default phone had no root password.. ie password authentication for root is disabled (this is not the same as having a null password)
There is, by default, no user authentication way into the n900.. so the root password is irrelivant..
You could change root's password, but you would need root access to do so... the way root access is enabled normally is via "sudo gainroot"
This command is disabled normally.. It can be enabled by putting your device into R&D mode (which is not recommended and my make your device unstable) or by installing the rootsh package
sudo su is not supported because it is not allowed in the sudoers file..
sudo gainroot IS allowed in the sudoers file.
So, to answer you question..
the easiest way to enable root is to install rootsh (which patches gainroot to allow acces with or without R&D mode)
changing the root password can be done after you've done that, but unless you are planning to install a root service with authentication, it isn't particularly relevant.. DO do this if you plan to use openssh-server

10.7.1 root access gone
Dear Admins and Readers
Under 10.7.0 Server I was able to activate the root user and I was able to login to my Mac Mini Server i7 as root.
Now after I did the update to 10.7.1 Server, this capability has disappeared . I'm able to du a "su root" with the coresponding password, but I'm nomore able to login through the login window.
What's going wrong?
Any idea?
Thank you in advance for anyones suggestions and help.
Regards from Switzerland
Thomas ThalerHi Thomas,
I had the exact same issue but on a non-server Mac OS X 10.7 and later updated to 10.7.1. I was in a hurry and didn't want to spend the day to find a fix. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Lion from scratch making sure that root access via GUI was still working. I updated to 10.7.1, installed dev tools and everything is still working.
I've seen that you posted your question on Macintouch website, you could also post the additional info there. A good place to post is StackExchange (http://apple.stackexchange.com/). -
Need to run fmsedge process without root access

On Linux, the fmsedge process needed to run without root access.I see that in the release notes
new in this release:

On Linux, the fmsedge process needed to run without root access.
However I have not found any documentaion on how to do this?
I would love to run the fmsedge process run as non-root so tht root does not own the 1935 listening port.
fmsedge 26837 root 19u IPv4 4007676 TCP localhost:19350 (LISTEN)

fmsedge 26837 root 57u IPv4 26532589 TCP localhost:19350->localhost:58913 (ESTABLISHED)
This appear to not be the default setup.
Thanks in advance if anyone has tackled this! -
New user not authenticating, can't change/use root access
I have a two-fold problem.
First, I'm am unable to add any new users to my standalone server. Actually, I can add them but they won't authenticate. Am using File Services, AFP and SMB, and Web services for sharing iCals. No home directories, no NetBoot, no Open Directory Master, local users only. Pretty simple setup.
Second issue, which I'm thinking might be related, is that I have no System Admin (root) access to the server. I do have admin access to local directory. Tried to set root access starting up from OS DVD and it seemed to "take" but after restarting, Xserve does not recognize the newly set password (or the old one for that matter.)

Can't enable root access in Lion 10.7.2
Hi all,
I have read this Apple article on enabling root in Lion. It doesn't work for me.
I did a fresh install of Lion 10.7.2 to a formatted drive from a USB thumbdrive. I ran Software Update until there were no more updates.
When I open the "Directory Utility", the padlock shows open, and when I click on it, I am not prompted to authenticate, as the article suggests. In the Edit menu, Enable Root User is grayed out.
Any ideas how I do this?
Thanks.

No, you do not. I think you probably just weren't using sudo correctly. Normally, you just do "sudo /path/to/some/executable <program arguments>". If you are a real daredevil, you can just do "sudo bash" and give yourself a root shell.
I actually submitted an enhancement request to Apple to suggest they improve the root user process. Even when it works (and it doesn't half the time in Lion), it is horribly convoluted. I would prefer it if Lion had something like "Run as" in Windows. Apple's response to my enhancement request was "Why don't you just use sudo?". So I tried again to explain it.
Until there are significant enhancements in this area, "sudo" is the way to go. -
Install JavaDB with no root access?
I cannot access my Linux server as root. That means that I cannot execute files. Is it possible for me to simply upload the JavaDB files and make it work as a database? Install it without root access?
How about MySQL? Can I also do the same (just upload the files to install it, not having the root access on Linux server)?
Edited by: tse2009 on Sep 5, 2009 11:21 PMOf course. It's just a collection of jar files and you can configure (per application, in fact) where the DB itself is to be found as well. See the documentation.

Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?
We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
All advice / info welcome!I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!
Regards,
Tim

Makemkv requires root access? [SOLVED]
Okay. I've been running into a problem with makemkv and was wondering if anyone else had run into it and solved it. Basically, I have to run makemkv as root or with sudo. If I run it as a normal user, I get a dialog telling me "Application failed to initialize" which isn't very helpful. I installed it using the AUR package, but I get the same results if I grab the source and build and install it as my normal user to my home directory, so I don't think that it's a problem with the AUR package.
My guess is that there's a permissions problem somewhere, but I have no clue what it could be. I've used makemkv under other distributions before and never had this problem. I even tried an older version of makemkv which I know worked fine in OpenSuSE with a normal user. But in Arch, it doesn't work without root access.
So, I'm fairly certain that something requires root access in Arch that didn't in OpenSuSE. If anyone has any clue as to what setting I need to tweak, or which file I have to change permissions on, or whatever it is I need to do to make makemkv work as a normal user, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Last edited by Vasher (2010-05-13 02:51:01)Problem solved. The issue was that /dev/shm wasn't world writable. With /dev/shm world writable, makemkv works just fine as a normal user.

How can web developers access /www and below w/o root access in Solaris 9
Our web servers are currently running on Solaris 9 and Apache 2.2.22. Our web developers do all their work in /www and below, which is owned by root. Is there anyway to give our web developers full access to /www and everything below it without giving them root access to the server?
You can add rwx access to a group that integrates your developers account, or you can play with ACL.

My macbook pro has a virus/trojan that is resetting the EFI via apci and it is getting root access privileges. It seems to be creating multiple aliases that bundle with rogue apps and preferences so it is very difficult to control or fix. Please help..It all stems from the "about donwloads" PDF which kicks off the restructuring of the OS..
Well given the fact that it is not just myself who is infected and also that this is my 3rd macbook in 1 year because the other 2 efi's were compromised to the point where they were unusable, and also that I must've been to the mac store no less than 100 times in a year for these issues, I beg to differ. Here is what I can show you. This has been ongoing for over a year now.
I will try and show you as much as I can.
1) Here is what I see when I run mount from terminal:
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled)
devfs on /dev (devfs, local, nobrowse)
map -hosts on /net (autofs, nosuid, automounted, nobrowse)
map auto_home on /home (autofs, automounted, nobrowse)
localhost:/4zOta2Q9FMiMnRjTROIbhU on /Volumes/MobileBackups (mtmfs, nosuid, read-only, nobrowse)
Why on earth is /Volumes/MobildBackups my localhost is beyond me. I don't use iCloud and Mobile me is obsolete.
2) Here is what I show when I run ls -al /*/*/*/*.efi from root
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 May 1 00:33 /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 994464 Oct 2 2012 /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 115716 Dec 13 14:08 /usr/standalone/i386/tmbootpicker.efi
As far as I know my boot.efi should not change everytime I boot my machine.
3) Here is something very interesting. When I run cd /dev followed by ls -al look what I have;

WDS Vs. Root Access Point
What's the diference between WDS and Root Access Point??
They're actually fairly different concepts. A Root access point is an infrastructure AP that associates clients, which is what almost every AP you install will be. WDS is a Cisco protocol that lets APs pass user credentials to each other to shorten the authentication process while roaming, among other things. A WDS AP is the AP that stores all the keys and manages them among APs.
Is that what you're looking for? Again, they're not really the same concept. Your WDS APs are usually root APs. -
Using a package manager w/o root access
I do a lot of scientific programming at work on different servers with out of date CentOS repositories and without root access. To get the libraries I need and to keep them up to date, what I'm doing now is compiling every program I need from source on every computer I use, and never updating the software.
Is it possible to a package manager to operate in $HOME without root priviledges? For intsance, could I install yum (CentOS package manager) into $HOME or, even better, install pacman into $HOME and pull and update software from Arch repos into my $HOME directory? Or has anyone run into this problem and figured out a better way to install and update software?pacman has a --root <path> option. Try that (I haven't).
Also, I don't know how you or the admins would feel about this but if you've got physical acces to the machines, anything is possible.
Specifically, you could use a Linux LiveCD to mount the root partitions of said servers and reset the root passwords (in /etc/shadow).
A less drastic approach would be to add your user(s) to /etc/sudoers with an entry like this
Username ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/pacman -
Blackberry z10 image or root access
Does anybody know how to make an image from Blackberry Z10 file system or at least get the "root" access?tnx
Hello,
"image"? If you mean a screen shot, that involves pressing the up and down volume together at the same time...a file with your current screen image is saved to your device. If you mean something else, please explain further.
As for "root access...these are not android devices, and cannot be "rooted". BBs remain the most secure mobile devices on the market...such access would be contradictory to their inherent security.
Good luck and let us know!

Anyone know how to get root access via ssh for this device? And/or are there any alternate open source firmware options available?
Other forum members also had the same idea here .
Cheers.

Which is better for 3 displays, the 5870 or the 7950?
I have a Radeon 5770 in a 2010 3.33 6 core. I have a 30" Samsung 305T running at 2560x1600 (DL DVI) and a 1080p HDMI monitor running off a MDP->HDMI adaptor. Even this seems tenuous as occasionally one or both monitors need some cajoling to fire up.
