Root Account - No 'save as pdf' print option

The root account doesn't have the print option to 'save as PDF'. My other user accounts do have that option.
Any suggestions on how to enable the 'save as PDF' option for an account or if something special is needed for the root account?
-tjw

I log in as root because I don't like having to fiddle with permissions. For example I installed wireshark and it wasn't allowed to capture packets from the network interface because it needed special permissions. Even though the account I was using was a sys admin account I still needed log in as root; change permissions somewhere.
I decided that I would just log in as root. Yeah yeah its so very dangerous...no its not.
But; now that there are these little goofy things like so 'save as pdf' button forcing me to click 5 times to to the save as a pdf option under the preview button I may go back to a vanilla sys admin account.

You cna do this with the security options in the PDF file itself, which you can set with Adobe Acrobat, assuming you have access to the security options in the first place.

  • Save as PDF "Printing"

It seems that the native "Save as PDF" function under printing defaults to saving my documents in the application folder. I would like to set a specific folder in my documents as the target folder for all of these PDFs to be saved. I cannot seem to find how to set the default target for the Save PDF function. Can someone point me to where this is in the system? Thanks in advance

Make an alias to the folder where you want to save inside of your PDF Services folder (either your user or in the main Library folder). Name the alias whatever you want, like "Save PDF to this Folder."
You can quickly create an alias by dragging the folder to the PDF Services folder while holding down both command and option keys.

  • Missing .pdf print options

Recently installed iWork on Leopard 10.5.1, (cannot install 10.5.2 as I am still dial-up-apparent conflicts yet ti be resolved by Apple). In the process I no longer have the 7 pdf options in the file print menu. I have only mail pdf, save to iphoto, save as pdf-x, and save pdf to mail receipts. As I publish a newsletter I need the "compress .pdf" option back. Any ideas? Worked in Tiger without a hitch.

It appears that they left this feature out of Leopard. However you can download a program off the Apple Website to restore that functionality. Heres the link.

  • V31 save as pdf tools option disappeared

got upgraded to ff android 31 and saw that tools menu item 'save as pdf' had disappeared. manually downgraded to vn 30 and option was there. Therefore I presume disappearance was related to version upgrade - however I see no mention of this specific issue in firefox buglist or elsewhere

    thanks for your feedback, rob.
imyself am just a normal user like you, so i cannot influence the process by which the release notes or other version specific documentation is created, but i will escalate your reply so that an employee from mozilla will take a look at it.

  • Why does Adobe keep releasing updates for Acrobat that make the PDF print option diasappear?

I am really disappointed that after installing an update to  Acrobat 9 my PDF printer has disappeared from my printer list.
This is the second time this has happened. The last time this happened Adobe were still supporting Acrobat 9 and they ended up having to remote in to my machine to fix it.
Now I have to pay if i want that level of support!!! It begs the question why they release these destructive updates. Is it to force people to upgrade to X or purchase support.
Can anybody give me some instructions on how to manually install the PDF printer?
    I am running windows 7

Launch the Devices and printers setup utility through the Control Panel.
    2Select the \"Add a Printer\" option.
3Click the \"Next\" button and select the \"Local Printer Attached to This Computer\" option.
4Deselect (uncheck the box) the  \"Automatically Detect and Install My Plug and Play Printer\" option and  click the \"Next\" button.
5Select \"My Documents\\*.pdf (Adobe PDF)\" in the port selection drop-down menu and click the \"Next\" button.
6Select the \"Have Disk\" option and click the \"Browse\" button to open a dialog box.
7Select the \"AdobePDF.inf\" file  located in the AdobePDF folder in your Program Files directory under  \"Adobe,\" \"Acrobat 9.0,\" \"Acrobat,\" \"Xtras.\"
8Select the first item (top item) on the list of Adobe PDF Converter options and click the \"Next\" button.
9Type \"Adobe PDF\" in the field for a printer name and click \"Next.\"

  • Save as PDF (compatibility option)

Still a bloody newby at Illustrator...
I often need to save an AI document as PDF to send it on to someone.  There is always that panel that asks for Compatibility level and Options.
The Compatibility default is always 'Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)'.  I have no need for backwards compatibility, so I always change it to 'Acrobat 8 (PDF 1.7)'.
Question: is there a way to make PDF 1.7 the default in Illustrator?  I have checked all the Preferences, but cannot find such an option.
As always - thank you in advance for your kind advice!

Of course!  I knew it must be something simple...
    Thank you very much

  • Adobe PDF Printer Options missing (OS X 10.5.4 & Acrobat 8.1.2)

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to 10.5.4 and my PDF options when printing to a PDF via Adobe PDF are no longer available (ie. selecting the PDF creation type). Is this yet another bug with OS X & Adobe?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

Yep, that fixed it. Repairing Acrobat Installation didn't work on its own though I had to manually remove the PPD from all the affected machines and then re-run the repair.

  • Why won't the Mail PDF print option work anymore?

I have been trying to mail PDF files, but when I select that option from the PDF drop-down menu in the print dialog box, nothing happens.  Can anyone help?
    Jon

    No, no Adobe Reader here.
I did find an interesting workaround:
Make an alias to the Mail application
Put the alias in ~/Library/PDF Services
    Give it a catchy name
It then shows up in the print dialog's PDF menu (along with the "Mail PDF" workflow) and performs essentially the same function, but without the annoying fail. A side effect (a bonus to me, for arcane reasons) is that the mail message defaults to plain text -- the standard workflow creates a rich text document.

Here is an article from Adobe:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/exporting-publishing-pdf.html
Export an open document to PDF for printing
    Choose File > Export.
Specify a name and location for the file.
For Save As Type (Windows) or Format (Mac OS), choose Adobe PDF (Print), and then click Save.
When you select the Adobe PDF (Print) option, you cannot include interactive elements in the PDF. To export an interactive document to PDF, see Create interactive documents for PDF.
    Do one of the following:
To use a predefined set of job options, choose a preset from the Adobe PDF Preset menu.To create a PDF/X file, either choose a PDF/X preset from the Adobe PDF Preset menu, or choose a predefined PDF/X format from the Standard menu.To customize options, select a category from the list on the left and then set the options.
For Compatibility, choose the lowest PDF version necessary to open the files you create.
Click Export (Windows) or Save (Mac OS).
To reset options to the default, in the Export Adobe PDF dialog box, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and click Reset. (The Cancel button changes to Reset.)

  • PDF Printer not working in Adobe XI

The PDF Printer option is not working in Adobe XI.    We are using Windows 8.    When I open the printer box and select Adobe PDF, I get an error message stating "The server threw an exception."        The "Save as PDF" and "Convert to PDF" options work but those options are not always available.

A server exception would suggest you are using Acrobat in the cloud. I don't have an answer in that case other than trying later. Is the Adobe PDF printer indeed installed on your machine or in the cloud?

  • Sizing Save as PDF Output

One of the volunteer activities I do is to help manage the photograph archive of the family data pages in historic and fragile family Bibles. I like to first produce the data pages in a PDF so that nearly anyone transcribing can use a PDF reader to zoom in on a particular portion of the old handwriting. Where others have first photographed with basic digital cameras and the file is a modest size JPEG, going to Print Images, and then using Save as PDF produces a multi-page PDF containing all the images that is manageable by nearly any computer.
My last effort was with images taken by me with my D300 in RAW. The images clean up really well, but producing a PDF in similar manner creates a rather huge PDF file (over 1.2 GB for a 20 page document) that is sluggish to use even on my Mac Pro -- but you sure can read it.
Therefore I am trying to understand the "science" of how all the conversions take place to produce the PDF when the underlying images in Aperture are high resolution files of significant size. I cannot find that Export preferences have any bearing on this, but maybe I am missing something.
    Ernie

It sounds like you are printing a PDF from a raw file.
I don't understand the science, but I did a test recently in a similar situation.... the PDF of a 12 Mgb raw file ballooned to over 60 Mgb! So I exported the raw file as an original size jpeg, which trimmed it to just over 8 Mgb.... and then "printed" a PDF from that, and it stayed at just over 8 Mgb.
That should reduce your file to about 153 Mgb, which will be much more manageable.
Also, you can play around with either the export settings for jpeg, or the PDF print options to get that down even more.

  • Word 2007 - Save as Pdf gives error - This file is in use by another application or user

I have MS Office 2007 Small Business.
For months I have been using the "Save as PDF/XPS" option to save my word documents as PDF files.
All of a sudden, when I click on the publish button within the "save as PDF dialog", I get the error:
"This file is in use by another application or user."
    - I have tried creating a new word document and I still get this error when I try to save-as pdf.
    - I have tried opening a document that previously was able to be saved-as-a-pdf, and it no longer works either.
    - I have tried saving from other office applications (excel, powerpoint) that also get errors now.
I have not personally installed any new software that I recall between when this worked and stopped working for me.
As far as I can tell there have been no updates explicitly for save-as-pdf in office.
Is anyone else seeing this problem all-of-a-sudden?
    Thanks.
    jlk

I just encountered this problem while trying to save a pdf from Excel 2007.  I had recently updated to Adobe Reader 9.1.
I received the same error message you're reporting here when I went to Word 2007 and tried to save a pdf file from it as well.
    I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9.1.
Reinstalled the Office 2007 pdf plug-in
Successfully created pdf files from word and from Excel (which is what I needed to do in the first place).
I then reinstalled Adobe Reader 9.1 so I could read the PDF files I had just created in Excel and word.
I then tried to create pdf files from word and excel.  Error messages are back and I'm unable to create pdf's from word or excel.
So.. why does Office 2007 pdf plugin not work when Adobe Reader 9.1 is installed?
Frankly I'm getting tired of uninstalling Adobe Reader 9.1 every time I need to create a pdf file in Word or Excel.
