This is continued from the last inquiry.
This may or may not have any relation to posts on regarding Apple Mac Graphics Memory And Virtual Memory problems posted in the forum , but here we go :
Problems are happening on my Mountain Lion OS X Mac .
Upon trying to get an understanding of what's going on , I started at the BIOS EFI UEFI level , and found something :
I did a startup with this , ie Verbose Mode And Single User :
Power + Command + V + S
And what I got was :
root#
And then I looked around at the Verbose Mode And Single User , tried to understand what was going on in there , and then I simply moved up with the arrow key , Up Arrow .
Of course , just like in Terminal , when you go up you find the history or past .

  • Error with /usr/bin/cyrus/tools/mkimap

I get the following error on a /mkimap after setting /var/imap to /var/imap.old
    server:~ root# /usr/bin/cyrus/tools/mkimap
    reading configure file...
    i will configure directory /var/imap.
    i saw partition /var/spool/imap.

    configuring /var/imap...
    couldn't change to /var/imap at (eval 1) line 59.

    Are your permissions OK?
    Yup, A ok.
Did you stop mail services before moving your
    database?
Yes, not that much of a UNIX noob.
    Is your /etc/imapd.conf file OK?
Well on this one I'd have to ask what would not be OK? I was porting from a PowerPC to the Intel and I used Server Admin to copy mail config via "Mail Config.plist" exported from old to new. Is the some differance between the PowerPC /etc/imapd.conf and the Intel UB install of MacOSX Server 10.4.7 /etc/imapd.conf?

  • Trying to move files to /usr/bin

I am trying to install g77 on my Powerbook, but I keep getting a "permission denied" when I try to move the files to /usr/bin so I can link them to gcc. I have admin permissions, but it still won't let me put the files I need in the /usr/bin directory. Any ideas of what is going wrong here?

You need root access to modify that folder. If you're working in the Terminal, preface the command you're using with sudo. If you're using a GUI application, use the Go to Folder command in the Finder's Go menu to navigate to it, drag the files there, and authenticate yourself.

  • Can't exec '/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2' (No such file or directory)

    1) I installed Mac OS 10.6.4.
    2) I installed Xcode Tools 3.2.4 with iOS SDK 4.1 (Mac OS 10.6 version).
    3) I created a new 'command line tool' XCode project.
    4) I hit 'Build'.
    5) The build failed, with the following error message:
Can't exec '/Developer/usr/bin/gcc-4.2' (No such file or directory)
    6) There is no gcc-4.2 in /Developer/usr/bin.
    7) There is an i686-apple-darwin10-gcc-4.2.1 in /Developer/usr/bin.
    8) There is a gcc-4.2 in /usr/bin.
Yes, I installed the 10.6 version of XCode.
Yes, I told it to install everything (all the optional installs).
Yes, I deleted and reinstalled XCode, and still get the same error.
~/.MacOSX/environment.plist does not set any environment variables other than GL_* and SSH_*.
.profile, .login and .cshrc do not set CC.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I uninstalled the devtools & installed the new version (XCode 3.2.5). I then ran the new uninstaller. Interestingly, a number of developer tools remain in /Developer:
    # /Developer/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=all
Start time: Sat 11 Dec 2010 23:22:40 GMT
Started uninstalling versioned non-relocatable developer tools content.

    https://github.com/kerchen/export_gr2evernote
    https://github.com/spiermar/bookmarks2evernote
I noticed they assumed the default python is python 2. I have python 3.3.1 and 2.6.8. I'm following the instructions at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Py … ld_scripts
    Created a file with this:
    #!/bin/bash
    script=`readlink -f -- "$1"`
    case "$script" in
    /home/Dropbox/export_gr2evernote-master1/*|/home/Dropbox/bookmarks2evernote2/*)
        exec python2 "$@"
    esac
    exec python3 "$@"
I then, tried to save it as p2 under /usr/local/bin/ where the only thing that's there is meteor, node, and npm, and it throws me an error saying I don't have enough permissions.
How do I save p2 as an admin in /usr/bin/local using gedit?
I've searched on the forums 'create a file in /usr/' and I haven't found anything. Can someone please help me?

I moved p2 to bin, edited my projects path with the username in front of home, saved it as python, made it executable (#sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/python), removed p2. Ran:
    #python evernote2enex.py -m 10
    It's still referencing python 3...
"python3: can't open file 'evernote2enex.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory"
    My python file contains this:
    #!/bin/bash
    script=`readlink -f -- "$1"`
    case "$script" in
    /home/<user>/Dropbox/export_gr2evernote-master1/*|/home/<user>/Dropbox/bookmarks2evernote2/*)
        exec python2 "$@"
    esac
    exec python3 "$@"
I did everything exactly like the wiki said, what seems to be the problem?
OK. Looking at the 2 scripts you quoted, neither one is using a shbang line to set a python version to call. Without that, the python intercept doesn't even come into play. The problem that I see is the way you are starting it:
    sudo nano /usr/local/bin/python
Is root really necessary for these if they are in your /home/<user>/Dropbox/ directory. And it appears that you are assuming python3 when you start them that way. If you are going to use that method and they are indeed python2 scripts, then change your command to this:
    #python evernote2enex.py -m 10
You might try it as your normal user too in case root isn't really required.
I tested out the first ten with:
    #python2 export2enex.py -m 10
    it worked!
    then proceded with
    #python2 export2enex.py GStarred -n exported.enex
The script is fully functional. Thanks man!
Actually, you're not even using the script when starting your python scripts that way. You are explicitly calling either python3 (python) or python2 (python2) to run the indicated python script and not even touching the work around /usr/local/bin/python script. If your python script started with a line like either :
    #!/usr/bin/env python
    or:
    #!/usr/bin/python
And was executable, such that you called it by it's name, i.e. "someprogram.py", then the python script in /usr/local/bin/ would take precedence and effectively intercept the python call and choose the appropriate version of python as long as the path to the directory where "someprogram.py" resides is specified in that /usr/local/bin/python script.

  • Need to delete /usr/bin without using terminal

In a bit of a bind.
All how-tos detailing how to delete or alter the /usr/bin file involve terminal, but terminal won't work b/c of this error
login: PAM Error (line 396): System error
login: Could not determine audit condition
    [Process completed]
I alterred something in usr/bin and need to change it but must do so with some other program other than terminal (altering that usr/bin file will then fix terminal).
Kind of a chicken or egg problem.

I take it you're no Unix hand, so I hope you otherwise know what you're doing since deleting /usr/bin will remove important files used by the operating system.
Boot into single-user mode. At the prompt enter:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
    Next enter:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
This will make the filesystem writeable. You can navigate by entering:
    cd /usr/bin
This will take you to the /usr/bin directory. Note that in single-user mode you are root. Much damage can be done if you aren't careful. When you finish enter:
    reboot

root@SLR:~$ sudo hamachi  or root@SLR:~$ sudo hamachi startand the output is bash: /usr/bin/hamachi: No such file or directoryI am using installer logmein-hamachi_2.1.0.139-1_armhf.deb OS is Ubuntu Mate (Raspberry PI 2 - Model B)  Ubuntu Software Center says Logmein Hamachi is installed and has an accurate description of the program. I have tried command line install of hamachi and ubuntu package, both install successfully. When I run the 3rd party program, Haguichi, it says hamachi is not installed, but it is! I have confirmed that the hamachi files are in the locations in which they are trying to execute. I have made a clean install of the OS, Ubuntu Mate, running only these commands which worked great with no issues. sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install lsb-core
    sudo wget https://secure.logmein.com/labs/logmein-hamachi_2.1.0.139-1_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i logmein-hamachi_2.1.0.139-1_armhf.deb Can someone please suggest what may be causing the issue? Thank you.SLR

ya.. thanks, i was guessing it, but dunno how to figure it out. i have no idea why the architecture changed. iam going to recompile packman!
    thanks for your help
    edit:
when i installed my 32bit system i changed the mirrorlist to 'i686' repository for downloading 32bit things. i forgot to change it again when i was done... so pacman downloaded 32bit stuff and apparently updatet itself.

  • Using "/usr/bin/open" Remotely

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to execute /usr/bin/open remotely over an ssh connection without executing it as root with sudo. I've added the necessary configuration in the sudoers file that should have let me execute this, however, it still won't work for some reason.
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
    PowerMac G5 Revision B   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Bill,
I recall when you first brought this up but I don't recall your mentioning that a window can be displayed over the loginwindow. That's pretty stupid and if I saw it, I'm not sure if I would laugh or cry. Is that Terminal window opened as root? In the past, the "open" command ignored effective UIDs and would open the application as the user corresponding to the real UID of the parent process. I would be surprised to hear that Apple has changed that. (LC_LOCALE="state of denial")
On the other hand, doing that would be the moral equivalent of putting all users in the sudoers file with NOPASSWD for ALL commands. It wouldn't be easy for me to muster sympathy for anyone so careless with their root privileges.
    Andy,
That the WindowServer is always running hardly surprises me. It would really have to be in the global namespace; even a loginwindow is a window. The same is true of other flavors of UNIX; the XServer is virtually always running. However considering Bill's example, I have to say that an XServer is far more discriminating in choosing which requests to honor. In the words of James Tiberius Kirk, "You may ask ..."
Given the poor reputation for security earned by XWindows, being compared unfavorably with it doesn't bode well for the future of Macs in multiuser environments. Granted, the original implementation of Fast User Switching was little more than a novelty — hardly ready for prime time. However, I had far higher hopes for Tiger. You may ask ...

  • Is /bin/sh must link to /usr/bin/bash?

I'm building Arch Linux on embedded system which CPU is sh4.
I found there is a problem of bash package.
It creates /bin/sh as a symbolic link to /usr/bin/bash.
    But my /bin/sh is busybox.
    1. I'm wonder how could I keep /bin/sh to busybox's /bin/sh? Or, it could set on pacman.conf?
    2. Could my root account still use 'sh' as its shell? I wish busybox could still exist as the basement.
    3. Is makepkg or yaourt based on root's shell must be bash?

    Thank you Allan,
I have this question is because /usr/bin/bash require many dynamic library and I just failed login my embedded system after upgrade bash with pacman -Udd option.
Am I right of the following assumption (Sorry, I can not 100% understand your meaning, require double confirm.).
    1. I can keep my root's shell as /bin/sh (it's busybox version).
    2. I can config pacman to use /bin/bash for install (I've compiled brand new pacman)
    3. makepkg have forced to use /bin/bash for install
BTW, I found it is required bash 4.0 (declare function)  My embedded system's original linux only provide bash 3.0.  So, it took me a while to prepare bash 4.0.

  • /usr/bin/login Terminal start gives error

When i try to start up the terminal via standard /usr/bin/login, i get the following error:
login: PAM Error: Module is unkown
only been a problem since 10.4.6 update. Already repaired permissions.
I can change the shell command to bash, and it works. But if i try to run a "sudo" command, i get same PAM Error.
    I'm quite stuck here.
The other weirdness is that I can't ssh into this machine from anywhere else. All of the system preferences are set correctly.
Not sure if this is a different problem, or symptom of the same problem.
    Any ideas?

The line that you commented out at Gary's suggestion should be commented out. it's just there to remind you of what goes in which column.
    With the line commented out:
    # login: auth account password session
Are you still getting the error message that you initially were?
if so, verify the the modules exist.
    they should exist under /usr/lib/pam
    ls -l /usr/lib/pam

    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 8900 Mar 20 2005 pam_wheel.so
some have configuration files. On linux they're stashed under /etc/security. but OS X, seems to want to place them else where. judging from the output of
strings run again, pam_securetty.so, it's looking for it's configuration file under /etc.
a tad dated, and it doesn't cover all of the modules that are available, but
it may give you a better understanding of PAM.

  • No X /usr/bin/xinit: No such file or directory

Yesterday I have updated my system with pacman -Syu, now I get this on startx
/usr/bin/startx: line 196: /usr/bin/xinit: No such file or directory. Of course, the requested file is there.
I already reinstalled nvidia (256.44-1), xorg (1.8.1.902) and kernel26 (2.6.34.3-1), but the problem still remain.
    Any idea?

xinit is provided by the xorg-xinit package, try reinstalling that one too. Is startx supposed to call xinit? Does straight xinit work?
If /usr/bin/xinit exists, the only thing I can think of is that there are no execute permissions. Post the output of "ls -al /usr/bin/xinit" Mine gives "-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 15224 Apr  4 08:09 /usr/bin/xinit*"

  • Create script in /usr/bin called pacclean?

    #!/bin/bash
    su -c 'pacman -Qdt'
    su -c 'pacman -Scc && pacman-optimize'
    yaourt -Syua
this script was created to show
    1) To list all packages no longer required as dependencies (orphans) (pacman -Qdt)
    2) Clean the package cache of packages that are not currently installed (/var/cache/pacman/pkg) and removes all packages from the cache. (pacman -Scc)
    3) Improving database access speeds reduces the time taken in database-related tasks, e.g. searching packages and resolving package dependencies. (pacman-optimize)
    4) You can update your system including AUR packages (yaourt -Syua)
I think this is a good script i think, but is there a way to streamline it by not entering my password over 3 times? this script i created in /usr/bin and called it pacclean which i made it executable.

I have a script that has much the same concept as this one, but much longer. I'm sure I posted it in this forum before, but as it's changed a little recently, I'll repost here. It may give someone some ideas for how they'd like to wrap pacman themselves, or some coding style thoughts. I install this in /usr/local/sbin/pu and add that same path to sudoers with NOPASSWD set. Note that you don't have to run it with sudo yourself, as it will detect if you are not root and re-run itself in sudo for you if not. Note that this will produce a large amount of noise output on the first run, as the saved state data (/var/lib/pu) won't be populated yet, and so all the comparisons from last run to now will run as if everything in the world is brand new.
