Rosetta and Mac Classic Support Disappointment (please excuse my rant)

As a MAC user since 1984, I am very disappointed in the disappearance of Rosetta.  I am actually still upset that the Classic OS became missing in Tiger.  In contrast, great effort has been made by Apple to support PC users.  How about putting a little bit of that effort toward people that supported Apple all through Mac history?
We have plenty of applications and data files that can only be used with older applications - and the path to that data is severed.  There are older applications that have no upgrade path, are no longer produced or were nifty freeware or purchased shareware programs that still have value.  Replacing that functionality might be found, but at significant cost.  Data in proprietary formats are locked into the programs that no longer can run.
So - OK - we can hang on to our old OS for now, but soon new versions of applications will require the newer OS and we will have to once again choose what doesn't make the cut, ultimately losing capability we once had or becoming forced to spend a lot to buy or upgrade to new software to hold ground.
I seriously wish that Apple would reconsider support for Rosetta and even the Classic OS.  We can boot Linux or Windows using VMWare or Fusion - but cannot reach PPC applications or Classic applications.  Even fonts that were purchased may no longer work if they are the wrong kind, and there needs to be a better, OS included utility to sort the font business out on upgrading.
I probably posted a similar message at the time of the 68030/68000 switch to PPC as many of my programs were retired abruptly. I have had to replace SCSI external devices with Firewire, and then live in fear of a disappearance of Firewire. Now I have to keep a bone yard of computers alive in my basement to protect from losing contact with past work.
Apple: Please support past customers.
If anyone has found a way to install earlier OS X versions in a virtual machine, or run Classic, let me know. Maybe I am just not well informed.  For now I will have to avoid the new OS - Lion.

Thanks for the link to SheepShaver - I will definitely check that out.   I have moved zip disk data to hard disks and DVDs, and have moved some of the floppies, however, that is only one piece of the puzzle.   I can't tell you how many times I have opened up a file to find that it an older version of PowerPoint that Microsoft doesn't support any longer (yes, Apple is not alone in stranding users actually doing work) or finding an old MacDraw or other program that cannot be opened or transformed to something that will open it.  That event is usually followed by pondering on how long is it going to take to resurect the old system to view the data versus simply recreating it with new tools, hoping my memory is good enough.  Usually the dive into the old pile is because the memory needs the refresh!
I have already discarded several 9-track tapes that were stored, and 1/4 tape carts, and even those tiny HP tape cartridges from the old smart terminals since it has been years since I had anything that would read those.  I am getting close to discarding stored floppies also - -  If I haven't visited those floppies in a while, then there probably isn't anything there I truly need. - -  That is not the main issue.  --  I am nervous about the future of Firewire due to investment in my music hardware that depends on firewire, but it is not so much the hardware updates that bother me, (I really don't miss my paper tape punch and reader!), but it is the loss of recent, still viable applications that did not make the leap from PPC to Intel that are now falling off the map that hurt the most.   Half of those can be "re-bought" and upgraded to Intel versions by shelling out cash, while others are simply retired and totally unavailable.   If I had Tiger on an external HD to make use of PPC apps and Classic Apps, that would be great.  Since Tiger was on my PPC Mac I doubt that hard disk would boot on an Intel Mac for lack of specific hardware drivers.    For now I am ok with using my old Mac networked with my new one.
It just seems too easy for manufactuers to eliminate things we have come to depend on - such as Microsoft's removal of Visual Basic support from Microsoft products - and then - In 2011 Visual Basic was reinstated in Mac Excell and Word.   I have had to say good by to MacDraw, and now AppleWorks, and even QuickTimePro.   But we have also seen features leave Apple iMovie and then return - so I do believe users should voice their opinion when something like Rosetta and Classic turns up missing!      Maybe they will come back.
Thanks for the discussion and ideas.

  • Itunes and Mac Pro Problem -- Help Please

Having a really strange problem and could use some help.
I've got a Mac Pro with my wife's Ipod attached. Updating songs on the Ipod has become very, very slow. Literally, it's taking hours to move over a couple of albums.
Just out of curiousity, I hooked it up to a Macbook Pro in the house and everything was just fine. Tried reinstalling itunes on the Mac Pro and it didn't do it the trick.
All machines are intel based. Other peripherals are working fine.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • E71 and Mac/Linux support

I have just found out that if you have bought a European/US E71 (as I did), and you do not have a PC (as I do, have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X and Ubuntu), then there  are billions of things you cannot do, like e.g. updating your firmware.
    This is outright pathetic.
Linus Torvalds,  the creator of GNU/Linux, is Finnish, though Swedish speaker...
From now on I will search for a solution or for a way of wiping out Symbian, and replace it with something else.
We may like Nokia hardware, but as to software, you offer us really nothing...

As far as I can tell even the latest version of the Mac application (Nokia Multimedia Transfer) is completely useless to update the firmware.
Scandalously enough, you must still have a @!#! PC running Windows, to update.
I am trying to see whether Wine on Ubuntu and Parallels on Mac may help in running the update.
You should however note that, in accordance with the atrocious quality of Nokia software, the firmware update is destructive, i.e. it will wipe out all your E71 settings, so best try to backup them first.

When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5? I have a new Mac book Pro 2013 and cannot install. Do I return the Windows version and try to download 8.0, or wait it out until it is supported? New to Mac's.
    Apple please advise.

Apple does not respond in these forums except occasionally an Apple employee will stop by. If you want to contact Apple, use the contact us link at the bottom of this page.
With respect to your question "When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5?" you are asking us to speculate as to when Apple will release their drivers supporting Windows 8.1. We do not know, and we can not speculate as to when. From the terms of use of this forum:
"Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
Speculations or rumors about unannounced products."
The planned dates of production or release of Windows 8.1 drivers are speculation about the drivers.
With respect to your other question, "Do I return the Windows version and try to download 8.0, or wait it out until it is supported? New to Mac's.". I answered you.

Try the Boot Camp Assistant when you are in OS X and download those and follow the directions in BCA utility.
Then look up the Boot Camp forum. I suspect you thought this was MBP related forum, it is for 65 lb tower model (and well the new "nMP Late 2013 Mac Pro" http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/

  • Problem Installing Classic support in Mac OS X v.10.2.3

    Hello!
    Sorry for my poor english.
    I got a PowerBook G4 (15 inch)
And Mac OS X v. 10.2.3 installed on it.
Some program tells me that it needs Classic enabled to start.
Then I go to System Preferences to Classic
    And there's a messsage
"There is no volume with a system folder that supports starting Clssic"
I were confused. I did reinstall all the system to split the hard drive in two partitions. But that doesn't help me.
After this. I search the internet for the solution.
    According to this article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh763.html
I should insert "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disk, but i haven't got anything like this.
    I've got:
Apple Hardware Test (PowerBook G4) Disk
    and
PowerBook G4 15 inch Software install and Restore Disk
I deside to insert "Software install and Restore" disk. There is a package "Install Applications and Mac OS 9". I run it. It installs the Restore utility. After that, restore utility autorun. I tell that i wish to restore Mac OS 9, and after a while the programm tells me, that "there's an error type number 45 on copying".
After this, i'm decided to copy whole inserted disk to PowerBook as an .dmg file and try to install from it. Copy process done successeful, no read errors. But the installation process ask me "PLease insert the disk market like this" and picture of the part of the disk with two circles, exactly i have on the "Install Applications and Mac OS 9" Disk.
So, what should i do to enable that Classic Support on my Mac OS X v.10.2.3
And more of it. What is the message
"There is no volume with a system folder that supports starting Clssic"
and what is System Folder and is there any way to make it somehow?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Thanks a lot!
Last 10 days was my first deep intrusion into Mac OS intrails...
About disks i have, yes, it's original disks. There's no scratchs or dust on them. The copied fine in IBM PC, disk to disk, with no errors. How i tell before, there's a problem that restore application tells me that tehre's an "error type number 45 on copy". And i can't solve exactly this problem.
Also, I found another one solution in internet. Sorry, this solution is in russian, but i will try to traslate it later
    http://www.mikeosx.com/faq/faq.html#Anchor-49575
    This solution tells:
    1 step:
Start install you Mac OS X from install disk
    2 step
Split you hard drive into two partitions with Disk Utility application before you will procide to install, And don't forget to set "OS 9 Drives" (or something like this)
    3 step
After installation was complete. Restart you'r Mac.
Insert disk marked "Repair" (or something like this) than go to "/Volumes/iBook Restore CD/.images"
"iBook Restore CD" you should change to whatever you disk is labeled.
In that folder (directory) you will notice file OS9General.dmg
    Mount this disk image
    4 step
Open your empty partition (not the one you installed Mac OS X)
Select all the files on mounted OS9General.dmg and copy them to empty partition.
Thank You "eww" ones more, for your suggestions. I hope that i will win this round "Me vs Mac"

  • Installing nVidia GeForce drivers on Mac OS 9 Classic Support

    hi, everyone !
I have just installed classic support on my Quicksilver and i don't know how to install the drivers for my GeForce Ti4600 OEM video card.
Can you please give me more information ?
    Cheers !

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com may be another place to find references you need.
Classic driver support is not the same as booting into Mac OS 9 support.
For instance Simcity 2000 would only run on my iMac G4 if I booted into Mac OS 9. When I try to run it in Classic, it stalls trying to load. The same thing happened to John Madden 2000 unless I changed to software graphics mode, and then only when booted into Mac OS 9.
Booting means going into Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk and selecting the Mac OS 9 System Folder, and restart. Whereas Classic loads it in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic without a reboot.

I'm still very new to forums so please excuse anything that may have been previously asked. I purchased a USB controller for my mac to play a couple games and the vibrate function on the controller will not stop. I was wondering if there is a way to access the controller setting or if os x supports plug and play controllers? Any help is greatly apprectiated.

What I don't understand is this:  I originally bought and installed Photoshop CS6 back in March 2013, and it worked fine.  Yesterday my hard drive had to be replaced and my computer person salvaged as much of what was on it as he could, but now I have to reinstall Photoshop.  1) Why did it work before and it's not working now?  2) Is there anything I can do that does not involve reformatting the hard drive?

It means what it says. The "computer person" formatted it wrongly/ unsuitably. it needs to be formatted again.

    Are you being serious?
If you've done any programming in Java then I'd really have hoped you already realised it is a platform independent programming language, that was Sun's original intention when they created it ,  to be able to run compiled code on any Java Virtual Machine regardless of the platform:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_%28programming_language%29
And as for "dot net" - do you not realise that this is purely a MS Windows development framework?!!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework
Just to be clear, (and I realise I'm being picky here, given that English isn't likely to be your first language), they are not "developer programs", they are programming languages or frameworks.
And for further clarification, the Mac operating system does support Java development, and does not support .Net (unless you install Windows on it!)
I can't comment on the 'mainframe' bit you're referring to without more detail.

I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8.  The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma.  This one tells you what your camera needs:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html   This one tells you what version of software you need:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6.  (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13.   Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter.  Download and install it from here for FREE:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890  Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use.  That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.  DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless.  There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

I am an HP employee, but my posts and replies are my own and do not reflect the opinion of HP.

    Hi Omar,
I hope we can help get through this, & Thank You!  So since at this point it seems the software did have problems, either from being removed previously or just the combination of a few things, upgrade, install, and uninstall.
If this is the only printer you have, then I suggest the following.
    1. Go to System Preferences
    2. Go to Printers & Scanners
    3. (This step will remove all printers from the print queue) Right click on your printer on the left and choose "Reset Printing System"
    4. Close out of Pritners & Scanners and System Preferences
    5. Open Finder
    6. Click on "Applications" on the left side
    7. Move the HP or Hewlett-Packard folder to the Trash
    8. Click "Finder" on the top menu by the Apple symbol, click on "Empty Trash" (then click Empty Trash to confirm)
    9. Close Finder
    10. Find the downloaded Full Feature software "HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.40" and attempt to install again
Note: Step 10 is under the assumption that your printer is still on the wireless network, and the mac is also on that same network.
