Rosetta emulation gone on iMac 20" (2GHz, 10.5.5)

A few days ago, I noticed that some apps don't work anymore. They all are PPC. Now I tried to open a universal binary file (iChat, Safari) with Rosetta (used the file information and checked the rosetta option) and the app didn't work either. So it looks like my Rosetta emulation is gone completely. But why and... where?
What can I do (except for a complete reinstall) to get it back?

Hey Guys ...
While I was researching about how to run PPC games on my Intel Mac Pro, using Rosetta, I discovered that a file was missing. So after I replaced the file I'm running AOE II (a 6 year old game).
But it's a pain to do so but follow these steps ...
1) Insert your Leopard Install Disc. Make sure it's on the Desktop.
2) Open a 'Terminal' window and type in +sudo -s+ then press the 'Return' key.
3) Enter your Administrators password then press the 'Return' key.
4) Type in cp and press the 'Space Bar' (to add a space).
5) Click & drag the Leopard Install Disk from the 'Desktop' into the 'Terminal' window & release. This will add "\" to all the 'Spaces' in the Leopard Install Disk Name and at this point the 'Terminal' command line should look like this ...
+cp /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1+ (no space after the Disc Name).
6) Now type in this:/usr/libexec/oah/translate and press the 'Space Bar' (to add a space).
7) Now type in this: /usr/libexec/oah/. The command line should now look like this ...
+cp /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1/usr/libexec/oah/translate /usr/libexec/oah/+
8) Now press the 'Return' key.
9) If you receive an error then recheck the command line by pressing the up arrow key.
10) If all went well then type in 'exit' and press the 'Return' key then close the 'Terminal' window.
11) Run 'Disk Utility' to verify & set the required permissions.
Your PPC apps should run OK now.
Good Luck.

  • Sound effects no longer play in Rosetta emulation games

While sorting out the data transferred from my recently deceased Powerbook G4 17", I accidently started up Audacity 1.2.3 which is a Power PC only version. It only partially loaded with its icon in the Dock but nothing else. I had to force quit the program to get rid of it and then deleted it. When my teenage son went to play his suite of PPC games such as Age of Empires 2 and StarWars after that, the game sound effects no longer worked. The background music still plays, but all the player responsive sound effects will not play, even though the settings to play them are correct.
I am wondering if the opening up and crashing of the Power PC Audacity may have stuffed up something in the Rosetta emulation system software relating to the sound output of emulated games. Before I consider doing a full backup and reinstall, does anyone who is a regular gamer playing PPC games on a Macbook Pro have any ideas on how to fix this problem. I was wondering if the Rosetta component of OSX can be replaced from a working system or if it is totally integrated into the Mac OS unlike Classic was.
    All advice appreciated!

+I tried to set "Problem solved" but got an error so will try again later.+
Thanks for trying and glad it fixed the problem

  • How to install Apple's Rosetta emulation software?

Sigma Chess is a legacy PowerPC application and therefore needs Apple’s Rosetta emulation software in order to run on Intel based Macs. This is pre- installed on Mac OS X 10.5 and earlier, but must be installed manually on the new Mac OS X 10.6. Please guide me

  • IMac Intel 2GHZ express problem...

I have called apple tech support 5 times, since I have apple care, they always help me out, but basically my problem is that at least once a week, I have to do a hard, factory reset of my airport express station in order for my computer iMac Intel 2ghz, to connect to the internet. I have the fastest internet package for DSL and when it tries to connect to the network, it says " there was an error connecting to __________ " and then when I try to open the airport admin options I scan and scan and scan and no network is found. Then my computer crashes almost 100% of the time. So then I reset the airport and then rename my settings and get everything working, and voila, no problems for about 5 days and then again same problem. I have a G4 PPC on the same network, and it has "NEVER" had any problems with the airport express, my settings are G/N and channel is automatic, no password, no security all default settings except for the name. I just bought this iMac the firmware on the express is up to date, and just to be safe I downloaded the 10.4.10 combo updater, from apples support site and reinstalled it. I ran Tech Tool, on my system as well as cocktail and all is fine with my system. I mentioned to apple that there may be a problem with my airport card in my new computer but they denied it on the phone dismissing it saying it was a software issue not a hardware issue and refused to take my computer back for diagnosing all the while I am training to be an apple technician myself, and this has really got me stumped, I love apple and my iMac but I need my internet working! Please any help would be appreciated!!!

  • IMac 20" 2Ghz (mid 2007)  shuting restarting

Hi, we have a number of IMac 20” 2Ghz (mid 2007), if you touch/tap the imac anywhere it will
just restart, no errors once restarted, tried changing logic board on one but no fix, anyone having
    same problem, any solution.

Sounds like either a problem with RAM or it is overheating.
Run the Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode to see if it detects any hardware problems.
    1. Reseat and/or replace the RAM modules, as per How to remove or install memory
    2. Have the iMac checked and cleaned. If it is full of dust or has a bad fan, it will not cool properly and shut down.

  • Trouble installing Shockwave: Question about Rosetta Emulation Mode

Hi, I just got my macbook a few days ago. I can't access Rosetta Stone (language learning program) due to lack of Shockwave. I tried to install it based on the instructions offered on the Shockwave website, but I was unsuccessful. Here are the instructions they offered me:
    Rosetta Emulation Mode
    1. Quit out of the browser
    2. Go to your Applications folder and control-click on the browser application bundle.
    3. In the context menu that appears select Get Info.
    4. Under the general heading of the info dialog select "Open Using Rosetta."
    5. Close out of the Info dialog box.
Sounds simple, but I can't seem to find the "browser application bundle. A finder search yielded nothing. Please help; I need to finish Ch. 2 by next week (when school starts), haha...

To enable Rosetta in Safari simply open finder, click on Applications, and then find Safari, hold down the ctrl button on your keyboard and then click Safari, a menu will show up, click "Get Info" near the top, a Safari info window appears, check the box that says, "Open using Rosetta." Thats it! Hope this helps!

  • Rosetta Emulation Mode?

Does anyone know about Rosetta Emulation mode? How do I go to this thing? I have to use this mode for my browser to download and install macromedia shockwave player...but i couldn't locate it....

Your OS X comes with a universal Shockwave plug-in Do not replace it with the PPC version. If you download the most recent universal binary version of Flash it incorporates Shockwave.
Actually, the original poster is correct. Shockwave is still a PowerPC-only plug-in. Take a look at the following link to confirm:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=82216d24&sliceId=1
(Flash and Shockwave are similar, to be sure, but there are still some older education and business web apps that require Shockwave.)
That link also includes detailed instructions on how to configure your browser to run in Rosetta. Good luck!

  • Rosetta stone via rosetta emulator

I am trying to run rosetta stone (the language program) online version and i get the error.
    rosettastone.com/online/code/current_version/Local/ENGlui.cct
I even found the file to try and force it to run in rosetta emulator but when I go to "get info" there is not option for me to force it to go through rosetta emulator.
I checked their FAQ pages and it seems that with the dual core intel it should not be a problem because rosetta would run automatically and decipher rosetta stone program.
    Any help would be great!!!

I had a similar problem trying to get the web version of Rosetta to run on the MBP. My work around is simple...
I am using the firefox browser and forcing the emulator mode. Then logged in to Rosetta and performed the necessary installation. I found this to be the only way to make it work for me. I hope this helps you.

  • Rosetta emulated apps unstable

Has anyone experienced instability with non-universal apps emulated with Rosetta? I'm finding my new iMac to be a bit unstable compared to my old G4 mac.
The app freezes, force quite does not work either resulting in needing to hard restart the computer.
Have been trying to find out why this otherwise awesome computer is glitchy at times.

Having very similar problems with iPad One...    Many of my apps now close automatically after only being open for a minute or two..  Extremely frustrating...  Yesterday it took over 2 minutes for my calendar to open, always has been near instant on...
Web has turn into an snail paced experience...   Wifi is not the issue...  Speednet test show ping 21 ms, upload 3.92 Mbps and download at 18.77 Mbps..
Biggest technical issue I have found is RAM useage...  Open up a few apps, mail, calendar, USA Today and my free RAM drops below 5 mb, which clearly makes the whole IPAD system unstable...
I use to be able have 20+ apps and NEVER have RAM issues...  Something in IOS 5 is driving this issue...
I did have iCloud on the iPad, but that completely destroyed my calendar and address apps, plus brought total chaos to my other Apple hardware (iMac, Mac Air, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS)... Took many hours to delete it...   There could be some lingering issues on the iPad with its tie in to IOS 5...
Clearly the release of iCloud & IOS 5 were premature & we have turned into beta testers,,

  • Apps on iTouch, gone from iMac

iTunes made a mess of my music, so I deleted the music library, and rebuilt it from backups. Now it works the way that it should. However, my apps on my iTouch (3rd gen) exist and work on the iTouch, but the files are missing from the iMac. B&W icons exist (all the same) for the existence of an app on the iMac, but clicking on it says there is no file. Those files must have gone with the music? Syncing the two completes without error, but still there are no files on the iMac. I do have Time Machine running, so if I know where to look, and where to put them, I may be able to recover my apps files on my iMac. Else, I can copy the files from the iTouch to the iMac, but have no idea how to do it.
Any advice would be much appreciated! - Andy

I tried that and it does nothing. My menu selection is File > Transfer Purchases from "iTouch 64". But I purchased this particular music in from the Gateway computer, not from the iPod. So when I do click on that selection nothing happens. There's a quick synch but no change to the status of this particular file.

  • 17" iMac G5 2GHz (ALS but no iSight) runs hot and LOUD fans

    Hi all,
I love my iMac. I've had it for nearly 8 months now. From day 1, I've been surprised by how loud it is under any significant CPU load. Unfortunately for me, I have waited until I'm well out of my phone support window to do anything about it. I have not yet purchased AppleCare.
As I type this, my CPU temp is 70 degrees C and fan is running at 2600 RPM, running nothing beyond the browser in which I'm typing. Should I attempt to work in iMovie and render said work to DVD (the reason I bought the machine), CPU temp will climb to ~76 and fan speed jumps to 4600-4800 RPM. At this speed, the noise is unbearable...but it is annoying even when idle.
Can any of you with this model of 17" iMac comment on your experience? Do these numbers and this experience sound normal? I know I'm not alone in this complaint, but I can't tell how widespread the problem is or whether my machine is normal or defective. I've been told by my local service center (CompUSA) that every single 17" iMac of this revision runs hot and has loud fans, and that there is nothing I can do short of complaining to Apple in the hopes of getting a replacement of a later revision. I was told by a "genius" at a different Apple store that my machine sounded about like he'd expect.
I'm getting a system board replacement tomorrow, but have been told not to expect it to make a significant difference. I figure I must do it before Apple would consider further action.
Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long message...
    Thanks,

    iMac G5 17" Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Mine is still fairly new as I picked it up off ebay a couple weeks ago brand new. So I don't know when it was actually manufactured. The part of the noise that gets under my skin is that soft but constant background whining coming from the CPU fan. It doesn't really sound like anything rubbing or a bad bearing, just the sound that an electric motor makes. But, it just seems to resonate from the lower left hand side where the air intake is.
So quite accidentally one day I held my hand under the left hand side and it completely muffled the whine sound. You could still here the hum and the sound of air but the irritating element was gone. Playing around a little more, I opted to tape a business card under that lower left hand corner, bridging the gap from front to back to still allow an airspace for the fan's suction. It knocks out about 90% of the whine.
It's been running that way for two weeks with no ill effects. Yes, the fan speeds up and slows down when needed. Normal at rest RPM is 1500 and mid to upper 50's on the temp. The highest temp I've seen under max continuous load is 65 with the fan at 4000 rpm.
I did experiment with something longer than the business card but I did then see a decrease in cooling capability. The isight models have their suction ducted out the back and I bet that gets rid of that resonance.
So all in all it still makes less fan noise than my old B&W, it's just that the B&W wasn't up on the desk so close to our heads. But, If your fans are constantly on high, there is a procedure for resetting something in power management, I just can't find it right now. Hope this helps.

  • Totale Rosetta not working on iMac

I recently purchased Totale Rosetta for Italian which is not working for me. The initial video window has no video in it. When I select any of the available menu options (Headset Setup, Users Guide, Rosetta Stone Total E Videos, etc.), I get blank white windows with no content. Plus, the acess is incredibly slow. I have no problems with any other applications on my desktop, which is an IMac, OS X Lion Version 10.7.5 with 16GB Memory. Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

Well, yes, I know that Quicken is not a Universal binary (that is unfortunate). But by all accounts and articles the application should run under Rosetta, yes? (Even says so in that Macworld article.)
That's the actual problem I'm having -- The installer will not run. Nor will the program itself. I don't have any other PowerPC apps on the machine to try them out and check if others are working but I'd assume they're not.

  • Imac intel 2ghz intel core 2duo 1gig ram

Hey everyone, my friend's imac has been acting up. he recently purchased Leopard, installed it and everything had been running well up until a few days ago when the imac seemed to be lagging. everything was taking an unusually long time to open. The imac had also heated up to the point that a fan had gone off on the lower left side of the imac at very high speed and noise level that I've never come across. Could this be related to possibly bad ram? or does he need to increase (max) his RAM? This has never happened before!

    Hello,
Check to see how much free drive space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on the Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
No Mac should make such levels of noise such as you are describing.
One can check RAM here: Memtest for Mac
