Rosetta Stone doesn't recognize my internal mic

I have a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.1) and I'm running Rosetta Stone Version 3, but it doesn't recognize my internal microphone at all.  When I got to Audio Settings > Available Microphones, nothing shows up at all.  How do I fix this?

Rosetta's response:
Vittal Prasad K: Thank you for contacting Rosetta Stone, my name is Vittal Prasad. How may I help you today? You: working with an iMac, the internal microphone will not work during setup
You: it is working fine on all other programs, and was working fine about a month ago with Rosetta
Vittal Prasad K: I understand your concern.
Vittal Prasad K: I have checked with our database and found that the program you own is Chinese level 1. Correct? You: yes
Vittal Prasad K: Thank you for confirming the information.
Vittal Prasad K: I would like to inform you that, it is recommended to use the USB headset to access the course. If you use an internet microphone then you will experience issues in speaking exercises.
You: we have had no issues until recently, was working fine and able to pass with 100% in speaking excercises
Vittal Prasad K: I understand that but as per the policy we are not authorized to assist learner who are using an internal microphone to access the course.
Vittal Prasad K: I apologize for the inconvenience caused.
You: really??? your software stopped working, and that's the response?

  • GarageBand doesn't recognize my "one" mic.

THIS NEW VERSION OF GARAGE BAND!!!!!
IT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE MY "ONE" MIC AND QUITS EVERY TIME I TRY TO RECORD.  I HAVE A RADIO SHOW AND CANNOT DO IT.  I'M REALLY, REALLY, REALLY UPSET!!!  CAN ANYONE HELP ME?
    <Re-Titled By Host>

    Judy,
when you installed GarageBand 10.0 the installer should have moved your GarageBand 6.0.5 to a subfolder in Applications. This version should still be working. If you are working on a tight schedule, use that GarageBand 6.0.5 version for the time being, to get your show done.
GargaeBand 10.0 seems to have a bug causing crashes, i.e. on 2007 models (iMac, MBP) and mid 2011 models. If you have one of these models, use GB '11, until there is a bug fix.
    See: GarageBand 10.0 crashes
If you are using older drivers for Audio interfaces or are using plug-ins for custom instruments and sound effects, check with manufacturer's for compatibility with GarageBand 10.0 and Mavericks.

  • IMovie 08 doesn't recognize my internal camera

After installing Mavericks OS on my iMac, my iMovie no longer recognizes my internal camera (iSight).  It used to default to the internal camera, now I get the "No camera connected" message when I try to record.   I've closed all other apps that access the camera, but no luck.  Any fix?

    Hi steamboatviolin,
If you are having issues with iMovie not recognizing your built-in iSight camera on your iMac, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful:

  • Mac Pro doesn't recognize any internal drive

My Mac Pro (2008) -- after rebooting -- does not recognize any of the internal drives. I'm running 10.6.8 and all of a sudden after reboot, the machine hangs on grey screen and I get folder w/ question mark symbol. I boot from Snow Leopard install disk but no drive shows up as being able to reinstall on. Even opening up Disk Utility from Snow Leopard disc shows no internal drive.
    Any ideas?

Just a few additional random thoughts on this Hardware:
A SATA controller failure should take out all SATA drives. On the 2008 model, the Optical drives are IDE/ATA, but there are two additional SATA ports (data only) on the motherboard.
In the 2008 and previous models, the Mac Pro RAID card uses a cable called iPass to intercept the essential signals to the four Hard Drive bays and route them through the RAID card. If that iPass cable were to come loose, the four main drive bays would stop working.

  • MacBook Pro Laptop doesn't recognize new internal hard drive

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro laptop.  Recently I started getting the flashing question mark in the file folder issue.  It could  not locate my hard drive.  I tried all the basic troubleshooting steps which did not work.  So, I then replaced the hard drive and the SATA cable.  I restarted it with my Snow Leopard installation disk, but the hard drive still will not show up in Disk Utilities or when I try to restart and am given the option to choose a different drive.  It also does not show up when I try to do an installation.  Please help!

I'd suggest double checking the new SATA cable connections just to make sure they're on correctly. If you have an external housing you can put the drive in there and see if Disk Utility sees it. That will at least verify the drive is good.

  • Rosetta Stone Mic Delay

Is there any way to keep the internal mic from going to sleep while I work in Rosetta Stone? The program does recognize the internal mic on my computer, but if it has been a few moments since the lesson last asked me to use the mic, the mic seems to go to sleep, and I have to repeat myself 3-4 times before the mic picks me up. Sometimes this happens in the middle of me saying something, so Rosetta Stone marks it wrong when I've said the right thing 2-3 times.
This is annoying, not really a bug, but it would be great if there was a way to keep my mic "awake" during my Rosetta Stone lessons. Any suggestions?

Mine is a different problem. And this is with a Mac Pro desktop.
First off, the USB headset never works. I tried the Rosetta Stone-supplied headset and a Logitech G330 (normally used for in-game chatting) and they did not work in the Rosetta program - versions 3 and 4.
I used an external mic and opted for the line input. Rosetta worked perfectly. I went all the way through Level 2. (Language I am learning is German), and even managed to converse with a German online tutor in Seattle (a feature in Version 4's TOTALe software).
Until two weeks ago. The line input is now kaput. This might have been related to a recent software update they made. The software update has now broken Rosetta and I cannot use any inputs at all. And "kaputt" is not a German word I want to keep learning about Rosetta's software!
Already called technical support. I am led to believe that there's something in the software that is refusing to take any input. The tech support call took almost an hour with little progress (I'm sure their technicians have already noted about it). I have nothing against the South Asians here on Apple Discussions, but their tech support team needs work.
Fluenz, though, had no problems. Fluenz is a competing language learning provider, but unlike Rosetta, only offer five languages - neither of them is German - and does not use speech recognition like Rosetta. However, there were absolutely no problems with Fluenz receiving any audio input.
Too bad. Rosetta actually worked wonders - when it worked.

Wonderful news that your Narration Tool is working.
Your thread had a beneficial effect for me. I did some checking with my laptop which has an internal microphone. I do not use it and found it
in bad shape. I am in the process of configuring it to a usable state.
Please never hesitate to ask questions or to ask for clarification - never a bother. We are glad for the opportunity to help.

  • Is Rosetta Stone v4 compatible with Mountain Lion?

I'm looking to upgrade to Mountain Lion however I just dropped $500 on Rosetta Stone a few weeks ago. I'm wondering, has anyone here tried running Rosetta Stone v4 on Mountain Lion?

I think the problem occurs when making a fresh installation of Mountain Lion and then using the Migration Assistant to bring applications, settins, and files from a Time Machine backup onto the newly installed Mountain Lion. That's what I did because I thought upgrading to OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) was a good time to also upgrade my Macbook with a larger hard drive. Read this thread for the error description are the hoops I had to jump through to make Rosetta Stone 4 work in this upgrade scenario.
Rosetta Stone (v.4.1.15) Error 8111 under Mountain Lion
It appears that the culprit may be the file "tracking.db3" located in /Library/Application Support/Rosetta Stone/TOTALe
I'm not sure how a fresh installatoin of Rosetta Stone 4 would behave under Mountain Lion. Perhaps it would also go smoothly. I do know that restoring Rosetta Stone (application and application settings) with the Migration Assistant onto Mountain Lion from the Time Machine backup made on Lion causes major issues and Rosetta Stone doesn't work without extra steps described in the referenced thread.

  • My new iMac's internal microphone is not being recognized by other applications (such as Skype or rosetta stone)?

I just bought a new iMac.  I'm having trouble with the internal microphone.  I went to systems preferences> sound, and checked the input levels.  The computer shows recieved sound from internal microphone and a USB connected microphone.  However, no one on Skype can hear me, and microphone isn't recognized while using rosetta stone.  Does anyone know what could be the problem with my internal mic?

I did get an answer to my problem.  It was specifically with skype and Rossetta Stone.  I had to re-install the apps and then do the general upgrade.  It fixed the problem.  Works fine now.

  • Pavilion DV6928us doesn't recognize Connected Mic

I have a Pavilion DV6928us Entertainment Notebook with Windows Vista operating system, and I'm trying to use a voice to type program. I can't turn off the built-in microphone so that I can use the microphone headset that I've plugged into the front microphone jack. I've tried going into Control Panel and configuring the default microphone, but there is only the built in microphone there to select. I plug in the microphone jack of the headset in first to make sure that the notebook recognizes I've plugged something in, and it does, then I plug in the speaker jack.  I've update the drivers and I've even tried Vista's Speech Recognition program. I've gone through Sound and covered up one of the internal mics on the laptop screen and it doesn't move the meter, I uncover the mic and talk and the meter responds. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Nkmatt, welcome to the forum.
I have a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema. I had the same problem. I had the video, but not the sound. I went into setup for the cam. It was set to recognize another sound device. I changed it to the LifeCam and it worked perfectly.

  • My Mac Book Pro using Mountain Lion will show a usb headset with a mic to select in the settings window. But the Rosetta Stone software I am using will not find the mic for me to select and use. What should I do?

Mac Book Pro with OS X Mountain Lion will not recognize headset mic via Rosetta Stone software. What should I do?

    Hi Illaass,
I am using version 3. I have used the apple/settings on my mac. The headset is appearing there and it is selected there. In the Rosetta Stone select/find window nothing shows up. It is blank. But the volume bars react when I speak and sliding the fader has the expected effect of raising and lowering the input. There is just no device showing up as the selected input device in the Rosetta Stone software.
I have done everything my Mac instructions say to uninstall and reinstall the Rosetta Stone software properly.
I'm guessing the problem may be in the licensing. I installed it first on the old hard drive that crashed. Maybe that used the terms of the license and now installing it in the new hard drive violates the license somehow. So that's why it will not work properly. It allows me to open the lessons and asks me if I want to continue from where I left off. I click continue. Then it asks me if I want to register the software. I click the tab for already registered software and click continue. Then nothing happens. So again I click on the button that indicates I want to continue lessons from where I left off. The same process happens with it asking me if I want to register the software. And it will not proceed through a lesson.

I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.

Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk.  Duh!  The application for the home is in the mail.

  • Replaced internal hard drive, time machine doesn't recognize as same volume

    Howdy,
The hard drive (call it drive "X") on my iMac (one of the 2005 models) was dying so I had it replaced. I rebuilt the new drive (drive "Y") from my most recent time machine backup (from external drive "A"). I am now having problems with one of my backup devices, in that time machine doesn't recognize that the new disk is conceptually the same thing that had been backed up before (same volume name).
More details... I rotate my backups monthly through three external drives (I store the most recent offsite). After the disk replacement and restore process, I continued to use that backup drive (drive "A") without noticing any problem. Then it came time to rotate my external drives, and time machine doesn't find enough space on the next backup drive (drive "B"). Presumably this is because it doesn't realize that the drive I am backing up ("Y") is a copy of the drive that had previously been backed up on "B" ("X").
Is there any way to convince it they are the same? Or am I in the same boat as this poster:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2770362&tstart=0
Basically I just want to verify that I am in that same boat before I remove old backup files on "B". If I do decide I need to remove those, are the instructions linked in thread 2770362 correct, or are there better ones?
    Thanks for any help,
    Bob H

Actually, the backup I deleted above was the backup for the new internal drive. Apparently TM had created the (incomplete) backup during the failed attempt that ran out of space on the backup device. Since the new internal drive had the same name as the old internal drive, I didn't initially realize that's what I was deleting. Not that deleting it causes any harm, but it didn't address the original problem of freeing up space on the backup device.
Not to worry though. I've figured out how to get at the backups for the old internal drive, and am in the process of deleting those. I was about to follow the instructions in your troubleshooting items E3 and E2, but upon attempting to enter time machine I stumbled into the right place. Since I had previously told TM to do no backups (because there was still not enough disk space), and since I'd left the backup device connected, when I pulled up the TM menu from the menu bar, the usual "Enter Time Machine" menu was replaced by "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" (or perhaps "Disks" was "Backups"). This then gave me a list of the machines that I'd backed up on this backup device (in my case machine names and internal drive names are the same). Of course one of those was for the old internal drive, and after choosing it I roughly followed the same course of action as I did a few days ago, to initiate deletion.
I also saw how I could delete each of those old backups individually, but decided against that as I did not expect it would free up enough space. My expectation is that nearly all the space is shared among all the backups for the same source drive, since relatively very little changes between backups.

  • Macbook pro doesn't recognize internal speakers

my macbook pro  doesn't recognize internal speakers and there is a red light inside the headphone port.  How can I get the speakers working again?

In addition to what dominc23 suggests, you may try jiggling a toothpick or cocktail stirrer in order to trip the internal switch.  If all fails, the Apple store genius bar is you last resort.
    Ciao.
