Rotate external monitor on OSX 10.8.2
Seems to be an OSX "feature" not to being able to rotate an extarnal monitor to portrait mode.
Got a j5create USB graphic card, also tried a USB 3.0 DiplayLink but nothing works. At least the j5create does get the external display to work, but I can't rotate it.
Is there any solution? Is it a driver problem or do I have to wait for an OSX update?
I would suggest looking at the monitors manufacturer's web site for possible drivers or software.
I read an article from a very old OS "how to" that if you held down the option key while opening System Preferences and continued to hold the option key while you selected Displays, you might get an an option to rotate. I can't test it since I don't have an external monitor.

Rotating external monitor on 10.10.2 also rotates LCD of laptop
Hi,
I am using Late 2013 15" Retina Mackbook Pro with OS X 10.10.2. I bought a DELL U2414H as my external monitor today. However, when I tried to rotate it by 90 degrees, the LCD screen of my MBP rotated as well. I am connecting U2414H to my MBP with display port and enabled DisplayPort 1.2. The resolutions on both screen are set to the default value. Please help me with it.
Best,
AlanWhat happens if you specify that Displays have Separate Spaces?

Any ideas on how to get my new osx mavericks that i just downloaded to recognize my external monitor?
Hello maggiefromloudon,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

HP Pavilion external monitor has stopped working with my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.8.3. When I purchased the monitor a few weeks ago it worked perfectly when computer was in clamshell mode or with lid open. Now external display has stopped working. When I turn on display it scans for signal but does not find it and then immediately goes into sleep mode. I am using a DVI connection with the adapter for the mini display plug. REALLY FRUSTRATING. Any help would be extremely appreciated.
Hi lancekatigbak,
If you're having issues with the display out on your MacBook Pro, you may want to take a look at the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

Aero switches off when extern monitor is rotated by Nvidia ControlPanel
Please see subject
Aero works fully when desktop is expanded to the 2nd monitor in normal view.
any workaround ?

sorry, I forgot to mention my hw: Satellite a100-02b ( geforce go 7600 )
.. and when I reboot Vista behaves a bit strange.
a few seconds all seems ok but then it sets back the external monitor to 16-bit colour and minimum Vfrequency ( 60 HZ )
and a message pops up that the "Desktop windows manager" has been closed due to a problem.
Is this perhaps because..
1) It's an old CRT, not specially known ( standard pnp-driver )?
2) the vista capability of the graphics adapter is not sufficient in this configuration ?
I heard somewhere that there is a switch in the registry, that disables the dwm.exe's test, whether the hardware is
able to support the aero-technologies. would that be a way to fix that ?Hi,
and thanks!

No I've EXPANDED the desktop to the 2nd monitor. In normal view Aero works right then on BOTH monitors.
Only when I rotate the extern monitor this problem occurs.
I think, that this special configuration is a bit unique ( but very comfortable to work on )
and therefore not foreseen ( eeh, sorry for my english ) by the programmers of the drivers or
the dwm-team at MS.
ok, when I add the 1280*800 of the laptop screen and the 768*1024 of the CRT
I end up at 2048*1024 ( the unused area included )which is quite near to the absolute maximum of 2048*1536 the graphics adapter
supports on ONE monitor at all. Perhaps that's just too much...
on the http://support.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB7101O90002R01.htm you mentioned, the limit for aero with my 128 MByte VideoRam
would be 2.304.000 pixels - but only when one monitor is in use. There's no information about multi-monitor use.
so what, Aero is not that important, but when I have some time again, I will experiment a bit...

External Monitor Stopped Working with OSX but fine with XP
I have a viewsonic Monitor that im connecting to mbp via hdmi-dvi.
It has been working fine for the last 9-10months but has all of a sudden just stopped being detected.
If i Boot up in windows i have no problems as the monitor is detected fine, but with OSX 10.5.8 all i get is the Grey/blue screen change on the mbp when its connected to mbp or when monitor powered on or off.
There is no change to external monitor though.
I have tryed resetting the PRAM
when i go into sys pref/display, it does not detect a second monitor
I have been looking around for a few hrs now with no luck, any help would be greatHave tryed having monitor unpluged for a whole day and that didnt work, cant see any reset button on monitor.
tryed resent PRAM and PMU, tryed booting in safe mode, tryed booting from OSX disc
but didnt quite understand :
"If you see video when started up from disc, you may have corrupted software. You can use the Archive and Install feature of the Mac OS X installer to reinstall. This kind of installation gives you a fresh version of Mac OS X, but you don't lose any data from the computer as your old information is all archived."
it just booted up and asked if i wanted to install another copy of OSX.
only thing i havnt tryed from the above help is the rm command part of the out of range mac mini, and im a little cautions about that
-i can still use it fine via bootcamp, i just have to go into video settings and tell it to use dual monitors, is there anything like that on osx ? only thing i can find is the display button in sys pref and that only gives me the option to detect displays which it dont do very well.
Thanks -
Display out, how to boot from OSX CD with external monitor
Folks,
My LCD display is broken and I have been using an external monitor for some time, however I'm ready to sell my laptop and wanted to wipe the drive and reload OSX. When I try to boot from the OSX CD I can see part of a desktop on my external monitor and I can see the curser move but some of the desktop is out of view as if the screen wasn't being scaled properly. Any way to make this work so I can see everything?Hi, mrhifi. I typed a reply earlier, but I must have hit the "Back" button instead of "Post Reply".
After booting to your CD or DVD, press the F7 key to toggle between mirroring and extended-display mode on the external screen. This may give you a complete, usable desktop on that display. However, I don't know that it will work as it should with your built-in display broken. You'll just have to try it and see. -

Does OSX Mountain Lion recognize an external monitor through a USB Port?
I am thinking of buying an external monitor soon and I dont know if my Mac Mini 2011 will recognize the external monitor through a USB port. Is their a software that I would have to download? It will be going throught the port with this http://www.walmart.com/ip/SIIG-USB-2.0-to-VGA/10884548 or even this http://www.directron.com/k33928us.html?gsear=1. Thanks
That is to complicated, requires special drivers and most likely will produce a poor quality siginal to the monitor.
For 24" or smaller monitors your best bet it to buy a monitor with HDMI and/or DVI input and use a good HDMI cable between the Mac Mini and Monitor, or optionally the supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter and a DVI-D cable.
For larger Monitors you will want one with a DVI or Display Port input and use a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and a DVI-D cable or a Mini DisplayPort to Display Port cable. -

2011 Macbook Pro External Monitor Problems
Hi all,
Looking through some of the threads, it appears that getting macbook pros to work with an external monitors is a big issue.
I've just bought a phillips 27" monitor and I'm having no luck whatsoever getting my MBP to see it. I've tried both HDMI and DVI using Apple's own mini adapters, but no matter I do, the monitor fails to detect any kind of signal and goes into sleep mode.
I occassionally get the blue screen flicker on my MBP as though it's trying to connect, but the monitor does nothing!!
I've tried most of the suggestions in other threads, which relate to earlier OSX versions, but nothing has helped.
I'm running 10.8.4 on a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7.
If I fire up my Apple TV, I can use mirroring and the monitor displays my desktop no problem, but the picture quality is poor. So I guess the monitor works. I want to use a bigger screen as I use Logic Pro, so clarity is pretty essential when it comes to picture quality.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Best Regards
PhilHello Phil,
The following article provides a number of troubleshooting steps that I'd recommend looking into, especially testing with another display if possible, and resetting the MacBook Pro's parameter RAM and SMC.

Everytime I use an external monitor with my macbook pro the desktop picture always changes to the same one as on my external hard drive...how do i get the external monitor to show the same picture as my macbook pro and keep it that way?
Did you download the PC version? There is no DOS in OSX.
Look for the Mac version of AutoCAD. -
My internal display on my MBP is having issues and occasionally displays white lines all over the screen. The current external monitor displays properly. Is there a way to use two extrernal monitors intead of one external + the internal display?

Dual monitor (w/laptop): external monitor is blank.
Hi! just installed arch for the first time a day ago. Right now what I'm working on is on getting my second monitor running (mostly for development purposes... and movies ^__^).
I'm using Arch64 with the open ATI driver and KDE. Whenever I connect the external monitor, the monitor seems to detect a connection occurred (the "check video cable" message disappears when I connect it and comes back when I disconnect it), and so does KDE. When I open my display settings, it tells me a new monitor was connected and asks me if I want to configure it.
Then I choose to configure and use the two monitors giving the following screens (right now I'm at college testing with monitors in there, thus the low resolution, but behavior seems to be exactly the same):
(EDIT: resized. In case of wishing to read full images, just take the "resized/" out of the URI)
However pretty the full screenshot looks like (... I just mean that even if it looks like the second monitor is working), the monitor remains blank.
Using arandr (xrandr's gui), it is exactly the same result. I might be doing something wrong (almost certainly I am ) (EDIT: decided it was a good idea to show what I did with xrandr).
In /home/<myuser>/.xinitrc my file looks like this:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1440x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal --output LVDS --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-0 --off
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
exec ck-launch-session startkde
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
The laptop's model is Toshiba Satellite L775d. I'm not sure what other information should be required in this situation, but I will be loving to give anything that isn't compromising
Thank you!
(PS: so far Arch has treated me nicely let's see for how long)

I wondered the same. I initially only used KDE for it (that's how it worked in other distros, but I'm guessing Fedora and Kubuntu have way more stuff on top). I moved to xrandr later after searching for options and I did select "Ignore" when KDE asked me to configure and just went ahead with xrandr. The same still happens.
Thanks, I hope I gave the right information.
EDIT: Adding some extra information. I tried rebooting with the CRT cable connected. When the kernel initiated its loading, the messages only appeared on the external monitor. It was afterwards (it was pretty quick, but I will assume it was when radeon's modeset hit) that the external monitor went blank again and, in that situation, the laptop's monitor went blank (so none of the two monitors worked... and I was so hopeful!)
