Rotate photos in Instant Movie

I selected 50 photos and I am using the Instant movie create tool. In the video I created some photos are showing landscape but they are portraits. Can I rotate them and how?

Portrait oriented photos are rotated in Instant Movies

When I create an Instant Movie in Premiere Elements 11 for Mac, any stills that are included that are shot in portrait orientation get rotated 90 degrees to the left and are diplayed on their sides during the movie. They display correctly in the organizer and when viewed in Preview, but the act of putting them in an Instant Movie flips them on their sides. I've looked through all the settings and preferences that I can find to look for a way to prevent this from happening, but I haven't found it. I can go into the timeline and then flip the photos back one at a time, but what a pain.

What do your computer resources look like? I know you are running Premiere Elements 11 Mac, but how much installed and available RAM and free hard drive space?

I am strictly an Elements Windows user, but basically Premiere Elements 11 Windows and Mac operate the same. There are differences.
For this test, I used Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit, dual core, 3.2 GHz, 8 GB installed RAM, about 6 GB RAM available, and about 1 TB free hard drive space.
I took 17 photos (sized 3000 x 4000 - 4000 x 3000 pixels) into a 1080i30 project and applied the Instant Movie Celebration. Ten of the 17 were portrait oriented 3000 pixels width and 4000 pixels height and 7 of the 17 were landscape oriented 4000 pixels width and 3000 pixels height. The photo orientation was not changed in the resulting Instant Movie. So, under those conditions I cannot invoke a basic flaw in Premiere Elements 11 Windows Instant Movie even when using pixels dimensions beyond the limits of the project settings.
Where does that leave us....to rule in or out....
1. Pixel Dimensions which are oversized for the project can cause problems even in Premiere Elements 11 depending on computer resources. As an experiment, could you resize one or twenty and see if that makes a difference in the portrait rotation even though I have no evidence for that being a factor in my Windows model today.
2. The Instant Movie and Premiere Elements media trace back to what is viewed at the hard drive save location for the photos. What does that look like?
3. I have no evidence that the 4:3 photos in a 16:9 project are at issue; neither 1 to 17 oversized for the project photos being the issue if all that is on that Timeline is combo of 3000 x 4000 and 4000 x 3000 photos. How did you make sure evaluation of the issue?
a. Did you take 20 of those 3000 x 4000 photos into a new project and apply the same Instant Movie to them and ended up with them all rotated? Or did you just remove 1 to 20 of them from the existing Timeline, leaving the landscape oriented ones and those .mov videos as is? Did you find any difference in this matter if your Timeline was without the video included?
Just some thoughts for now as I think about this some more.

Add On...What computer resources did you have for your Premiere Elements 7 where you seem to be saying that you used 4000 x 3000 - 3000 x 4000 photos under similar circumstances as now and had no problems. Assumed a Windows experience.

Premiere Elements 11 on what computer operating system?
You should be able to right click the finished Instant Movie on the Timeline and select "Break Apart Instant Movie" to do just that.
Then open all the tracks, expand the Timeline with the -+ slider above the Timeline, and edit your Instant Movie.

Why is iphoto having trouble with rotating photos all of a sudden?

i've been using iphoto for a few years. suddenly it un-rotated all of my auto-rotated photos (which screwed up all of my face tags) and now when i upload new photos, if they auto-rotate during the upload they appear in the preview of a whole event, but if i double-click to see a vertical photo, or try to do a slideshow, i get the triangle with an exclamation point in it, indicating that something's wrong with the file. is anyone else having this trouble? or have any idea what to do?

I've never used the Flickr feature so don't know if that as any bearing on the problem. if you're satisfied with the newly "fixed" library you can delete the copy of the original library that you made.
However, since you're having problems with rotated photos you might try this and see if the new library has the rotated photos displayed correctly:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.

3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
If the rotated photos display correctly in this new library then the problem lies with the orther libraries being damages somehow. You may want to stay with the new library even though the projects, i.e. books, etc. and keywords are lost.
If you have a lot of keywords in your current library and want to move them to the new library you can by doing this:
1 - open the old library and select one photo.
2 - type Command+K to brinb up the keyword pane.
3 - click on all of the keywords that are not blue so that all of the keywords are blue.
4 - export that photo to the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option. Select Kind=JPEG and check the two check boxes regarding keywords, locations, etc.
5 - open the new library with iPhoto and import the exported photo from the Desktop. That will bring in all of the keywords so that you don't have to recereate them one by one in the new library.

Premiere Elements 12-Instant movie option

I just recently purchased Premiere Elements 12 so I am a newbie. I like the effects in one of the instant movie options, specifically the news reel one. However, I want to put the photos that I am using in a certain order, but the instant movie rearranges them. Is there a way to make it use my order? I also want to center a photo within the box on the part of the clip with the coffee mug and reel on a desk. Is there a way to do that too? Thanks in advance!

2. To center a photo in the finished Instant Movie
Right click the finished Instant Movie on the Timeline, and select Break Apart Instant Movie.
That command will do just that. Once the Instant Movie is broken apart, then find the photos
on the Timeline and move and resize them carefully.

Imported (rotated) photos have been chopped please help!

I have imported some photos to the movie I am building, but the ones that were originally taken as portrait style, which I rotated in i-photo (otherwise they would be on their side) have come across with the tops and bottoms missing. How do I get around this? Plese help - this is my wedding video I'm trying to do!

I can't get rid of the thick border I get down each side. How can I get the photo to fill the entire screen?
Because of the shape of a portrait pic, you cannot avoid the black edges, unless you are prepared to zoom in, thus losing part of the top, bottom, or both. Note that you can also 'pan' a photo, so as to not lose any of the head of a person, for example, but cutting off the lower part of the pic.
All the un ken burns efffected ones I have in my time / clip viewer at the bottom - how do I apply Ken burns to all those?
Select them all (or do this one at a time if you want individual settings), and in the Photos Pane, tick the Ken Burns box, make the adjustments you want, then click 'Apply'.

Re-creating Instant Movie Features

Hi All,
I've recently been dabbling with the Instant Movies. I really like the 'Comic Book' theme, but think its too much light effects. I can't see a way to select which features to include/exclude, probably as its auto-editing. What I really like about the end product is how they have the footage on 5 screens, with captions, see attached. How do you get footage in those 5 screens? Is it a title or effect? Or impossible to create? Would appreciate some help.
PS, this pic is taken from an export of Freeze Frame. Any ideas how to get the exported photos to remain in a widescreen format as per the footage rather than this square shape?

You can break apart instant movie to view all the effects and transitions applied to the clip. But it is not reversible. i.e, we cant move back to instant movie once it's broken. Undo would work of course
The screenshot you mentioned is called PIP or picture in picture . You just have to scale every footage on different layers.

PE 9 - Instant movie

Hello, thank you in advance for reviewing my question(s). So, here is what I have. I imported about 100 pictures to create a nice slide show. I want to use either instant movie or a theme. I am adding 2 songs to the slide show (for sake of argument 1 song = 50 photos). The instant movie only allows for one song. Also, the instant movie does not allow me to place the photos in a specific order.
My question is. with all of these photos and 2 audio clips for them, what is the best way to apply a theme (or instant movie), organize my photos in the order I wish and add the music to the selected songs. Note, I want the pics to be evenly spread through each song. So if song 1 is 3 minutes and it is 50 pics, it would be 3.6 seconds per pic.

First, make sure your photos are no larger than 1000x750 pixels in size! This will save you a lot of headaches (and probably even a program crash) later.
Second, if you're determined to make an InstantMovie, just go ahead and make it with one of your songs.(Or even no song at all.)
Then, when it's done, right-click on the InstantMovie on your timeline and select the option to break it apart.
You should then be able to remove the audio from your movie clips and replace it with both your songs.

Is there any way to open an instant movie for editing once complete?

I need to correct a typo on the credits and I cannot find any instructions on how to open a completed file. Do I have to start over?

Glad the changing the Instant Movie Closing Credits text and leaving the Instant Movie intact worked. Great news.
However, I am fighting a losing battle trying the same approach for altering the duration of that Closing Title under the same circumstances. No breaking apart of the Instant Movie.... I can change this Closing Credits duration in Project Assets or the duration of Closing Credits dragged from Project Assets to the Timeline. But, when I break apart the Instant Movie, unlike the text changes that we did, the change in duration is not reflected in the Closing Credits file within Instant Movie. Still thinking about this one.
Now for what happened with regard to effects in your Instant Movie. I think that I will need more details on that to tackle it.
1. When are you adding these effects? I am assuming that you are doing this before you start the Instant Movie feature. So, after you start Instant Movie and you get the message about remove user applied effects, are you selecting Yes or No?
2. If you say No, your effects for a given component of the Instant Movie will remain, included with the effects that come with the Instant Movie. I am wondering if the following applies to your situation. Say you apply an effect to one photo at the beginning of the Timeline. No place else. After the Instant Movie is generated, you can see that same photo with effect repeated periodically in the course of the Instant Movie. It does not appear only once. Could you be seeing the repeats of your photo with effects repeated more than once?
I will think about this some more.

These apps cannot be accepted by your Apple ID.
These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID, and they will be available in that Apple ID's Purchases list. If you don't have access to that Apple ID and want to receive future updates, you will need to purchase the applications.

You need to either delete and buy them, or get whoever holds that Apple ID to tell Apple to release them. On a Mac, deleting the applications won't affect their data, but that should be backed up anyway.

I don't think you can. You need to open them in Preview or some other photo editing application.

As to your thread question..not that I have ever run into. You can customize the Adobe Instant Movies by creating an Instant Movie and then using the Break Apart Instant Movie at the Timeline level to do just that and modify that just created Instant Movie as wanted.
There are no additional theme to purchase. And, the existing Instant Movie (Content Download type) for an Adobe design needs to be downloaded from within the program (See Instant Movie display of choices and thumbnail with blue ban at the top right corner of that thumbnail. Select Download Now (to obtain completed files for theme) or Download All (to obtain completed files for All Instant Movie theme choices).

Instant-Movie - hung?

I am making an instant movie. I added 129 clips (mostly very short - 15-30 seconds). It indicated that it was analyzing all of the files and now it is stuck (apparently) at 100% Analyzing Media for the last file. When I check Task Manager the program is not hung and I see the hard drive flickering every so often. It has been at this stage for about an hour or so. This is not the fastest PC - Pentium 4 3.2 GHz w/2 GB RAM. Is it possible it is still processing, and if so, is there some other way I can check to make sure it is not hung (such as tmp files changing or something)? Thanks.

Process Explorer is like task manager on steroids (so good that Microsoft bought the sysinternals company). If gives far more information about each process and you can drill down to get more info on those processes - this might give a better indication of whether or not PRE is still an active process.
But ... it's not the utility I meant to recommend (oops!). I meant to recommend Process Monitor. "Process Monitor is an advanced monitoring tool for Windows that shows real-time file system, Registry and process/thread activity". i.e. you can see what it's reading and writing and therefore if PRE is still writing files. yes, i can downloaded the photo(s) and use preview or iphoto ot some other program to rotate each one, but it seems so awkward, inelegant and SLOW, just to take a quick peek at the five separate photos that someone sends.

You'll need an application that edits the pics to do this: Acorn, Seashore, Photoshop Elements, Graphic Coverter are some, but there are many others - search on MacUpdate
