Rotated Photos in iPhoto Annoyingly Revert in iMovie

I have posted this also in the iMovie HD forum, but have had no response there.
Others have complained that despite having the latest iPhoto update, photos taken in portrait mode (which appear sideways when imported), and rotated in iPhoto, revert to the sideways view in the iMovie Photos pane.
Having tested this with a newly-taken photo, I find that it is indeed the case.
Presumably this is because only the thumbnail is rotated and not the original file.
This does not personally affect me because I use iPhoto to store photos only when importing to iMovie, and my rotating is done elsewhere.
However, it clearly is a significant problem for those who fully utilise iPhoto as their primary storage destination.
Is this a bug? Is there a work-around?

I have a problem of clips(30 sec. say) being imported into iPhoto sideways and then I can find no way to rotate them because QuickTime takes over....
Is that similar to what you're describing and does that happen to you?

  • Convert photo in iphoto to put into iMovie project without affecting quality

Hi, hope someone can help. I am trying to put a photo from iPhoto into an iMovie project, but no matter what pixel change i try, whenever i put it into the iMovie project I get black bars each side of the photo and the photo doesn't fill up the full movie screen. Does anyone know if there's a way to do this without affecting the quality of the photo?

This happens because the image is a different aspect ratio from the movie, so make sure that you're cropping to the same dimensions.

  • Edit photo in iPhoto before using in iMovie, or not?

Is it better to enhance a photo in iPhoto (edit mode) before using the photo in iMovie; or would the quality from using "auto" in video adjust in iMovie (on an unedited photo) work just as well?

I did the test with 16 photos (2 different cameras: iPhone and Lumix LX5). I auto-enhanced each photo using iMovie and iPhoto. I exported the movie as an M4V file and played it on my macbook pro using quicktime.
Results: a very mixed bag. In general, the iMovie auto-enhance yields more vivid and contrasty photos with less detail. The iPhoto ones (same photo) sometimes appear a bit washed out, but generally have more detail.  The problem is some look better when done in iMovie and some look better when done in iPhoto.  For most, it does not make a lot of difference, so I guess I will go with iPhoto and add other effects in iMovie.
iPhoto will allow me to straighten a photo, and iMovie won't.  I do not crop photos using iPhoto because the iMovie cropping (with Ken Burns effect as an option) gives me a lot more flexibility.
    For what it's worth.

  • Photos in iPhoto... in iMovie

I imported a couple groups of photos into iPhoto and opened iMovie to add them to a video I've been working on. Once they're in there, some play correctly, while others just show a black/blank screen instead of the photo.
A peek in the Finder revealed them to all be JPG files... any ideas of something else that may be causing the error?

The photos are of poor resolution.

  • Why are some but not all of my photos from iphoto are importing into imovie?

they are from the same camera, taken on the same day and as far as i can tell the same format.
the ones that won't import to imovie play fine on iphoto, i tried exporting them to desktop but won't play as the file is "unsuported".
    help this is so frustrating!

Hi, and thanks for the response.
Ok guess my basic problem is that I don't properly understand the concept of where and how photos are copied to.
Say I take one photo with my iPhone 5...
    - Where will this photo be stored, and where will it be copied on my phone and on my iPad, if I have the Photo Stream and the Shared Photo Stream options turned on on both devices?
    - which photo can I erase on my phone, but meanwhile still keep a copy on my iPad anyway?

  • How do I import photos from iPhoto into the iMovie Events window? I want to use photos in my iMovie trailer program

i want to use some of my photos from iPhoto library in the iMovie Trailer program - it won't let me import them. I tired to sneak them into the Events library but can't seem to be able to do that either when using the imovie trailer feature, I have to open up a different project to be able to import photos, but only able to drop them directly into a project, not the events folder -- I can't get photos into the event folder.

You cannot add photos to a trailer.
The solution is to get as far as you can in the Trailer withou adding the photos. Then, select the trailer in the Project Library List, and click FILE/CONVERT TO PROJECT. Now it is an iMovie Project, and you can do anything that iMovie can do, including add photos wherever you want.

  • Flagged photos in iPhoto not showing up in iMovie

I recently updated both imovie and iphoto.  I have several flagged photos in iphoto.  I am working in imovie to create a movie.  When I cleck the camera on the lower right to import photos into imovie, I see all my photos.  However, I don't see an option to choose the flagged photos.  This has always been there.  Incredibly annoying.  I usually flag the pics I want to use in a movie.
I have tried closing and restarting both programs.  Restarting computer.  Removing all flags and reflagging some.
Still, I don't see that option to chose the flagged photos in imovie.  I see all others like Events, Faces, Places, etc.
    Thanks for any help.

    Anyone have any ideas????
Again... I don't see the flagged photo smart album in imovie.... see screen shot below.
Where the flagged photo album should be (after Last Import)... it is not there!!
Very frustrating.  Spent about 5 hours on and off with Apple support and they can't figure it out either.

  • IMovie '11 will not display edited versions of photos from iphoto

After editing some photos in iPhoto, iMovie displays in the preview window the edited photo, but once placed on the timeline, it reverts back to the unedited original version. Any ideas what's going on?
Ultimately, after creating a slideshow of photos in iMovie, i realized some photos need editing. But after going back to iPhoto to edit them, it appears as though there is no way for iMovie to update the slideshow with the edited photos that i still want to use. Even if i place them a second time on the timeline to replace the old photo, i lose the ken burns pan/zoom options i already set. i'm afraid i'll have to start all over again with my edited photos. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

in light of that response, i tried something that worked a little better. since their is no 'edited' photo, after making my edits in iphoto, i exported the photo out of iphoto by dragging it to the desktop, which seems to create a fully edited and changed file. this photo i immediately dragged right back into iphoto, and upon import, iphoto treats it like a new 'original' file (and the edits are maintained). this photo i could import into my existing imovie project and it shows up correctly. it's still some work to do this, but it prevents me from having to start all over again.
i guess until there is an update to address this the bottom line is this; make for certain as best you can that your photos are all edited in iphoto BEFORE you begin your imovie project, since making edits to photos after the fact will cause you some runaround exporting and reimporting with iphoto, and then replacing those photos in the imovie timeline...

  • Problems "pulling" photos from iPhoto into iMovie....

I am trying to create a movie with a combination of movie clips from my DV camera and photos from iPhoto (on my G5, 2ghz iMac). Movie clips are no problem. The problem occurs when I try and "pull" in more than 20 pics or so from iPhoto. I am trying to "pull" them in via "Media" and then "Photos". If I try and pull in a bunch, say more than 20, iMovie quits and I have to start all over again. Is this a bug and is there any workaround?

I actually think this is one area where iMovie6 does a lot better than iM5. My machine used to choke all the time when I would try to drag a whole bunch of photos into timeline. The reason is that whenever you bring in photos like that, they have to be rendered, so trying to render a whole lot of stuff is going to be time dependent based on your processor, memory etc. (and the settings you have for timelength, ken burns effect etc.) iM5 tried to render everything simultaneously and would always lock up on me. iM6 appears to render one at a time so it eventually finishes, but then I stopped trying to import large bunches of photos after my iM5 experience so I can't say where the limit is.
I've gotten so fond of playing with the ken burns effect and setting the start and stop points that I pretty much do all my images one at a time now because it can render the last one while I'm picking settings for my next one.

  • Photos from iphoto placed in imovie breakdown

Imovie 4.01, when I move photos from iphoto into the clip viewer the photo clips become unreadable on play back. About halfway through the clip the picture changes to gray with repeating black and white rows of small pixelated squares. This happens to most photos and always to the copied/pasted photo clips. I have placed photos in iphoto in the following formats: photoshop, pict and jpeg. None work. I create still frames from the photos in the clip window and in the clip viewer, no luck. The photo clips appear normally in the Clip Viewer strip but the photos play back as garbage. Please help.
    Thank you

  • Photos from iPhoto used in iMovie

I previously posted this question in the iMovie community, but received no response.  I'm hoping someone here will have some knowledge on my situation.
I have created 2 movies in iMovie that use some videos uploaded to iMovie and also some photos from iPhoto.  I have since decided to move all of my photos to Adobe Lightroom.  To do so, I have exported photos event by event from iPhoto to a new location, imported them into Lightroom, and then deleted the event from iPhoto.  For those iPhoto events where I have used photos in iMovies, I have yet to delete the events from iPhoto.  I assume that iMovie will be very confused about the location of the photos and will no longer be able to play the movie.  Should I just keep these events in iPhoto in addition to having a copy of the photos in Lightroom?  Can iMovie "see" photos in Lightroom, so I can create additional iMovies taking photos from Lightroom?
I have 2 goals here:  1) not break 2 existing iMovies that use photos from iPhoto, 2) be able to create new iMovies using video and also photos from Lightroom.
    Is this possible?
    iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

You can check easily if iMovie will continue to work with photos after you've deleted them from iPhoto - simply make a quick project in iMovie and then delete the photos from iPhoto. I do believe they will but not absolutely certain.
No I don't believe you can share photos from LR to iMovie like you can from iPhoto or Aperture because LR has no knowledge or way of working with the Media Browser system. You'll need to export from it to the Finder and from there to iMovie.

  • IPhoto 09 loses date on auto-rotated photos

Try that: take an old photo in portrait mode (auto-rotated from a camera, mine is a Canon) from your iPhoto library, drag it to the desktop, and drag it back to iPhoto. The new photo imported has lost its original date, its date is now the importing date.
I don't think that is acceptable.
iPhoto 8 would lose lost of EXIF information when auto-rotating photos, but the date?!

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I tried with the File/Export method: the results is strictly identical.
It seems to me that the problems resides in the import of "auto-rotate" photos. As the previous version of iPhoto, iPhoto 09 create a modified version of the photo, which loses all the EXIF information, including the date/time the photo was digitized.
iPhoto still displays the photo with the correct time, probably from the library or the Original file, but when it exports it, the only date remaining is the creation date, which is the import date.

  • Why is iphoto having trouble with rotating photos all of a sudden?

i've been using iphoto for a few years. suddenly it un-rotated all of my auto-rotated photos (which screwed up all of my face tags) and now when i upload new photos, if they auto-rotate during the upload they appear in the preview of a whole event, but if i double-click to see a vertical photo, or try to do a slideshow, i get the triangle with an exclamation point in it, indicating that something's wrong with the file. is anyone else having this trouble? or have any idea what to do?
    thanks...

I've never used the Flickr feature so don't know if that as any bearing on the problem.  if you're satisfied with the newly "fixed" library you can delete the copy of the original library that you made.
However, since you're having problems with rotated photos you might try this and see if the new library has the rotated photos displayed correctly:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
If the rotated photos display correctly in this new library then the problem lies with the orther libraries being damages somehow.  You may want to stay with the new library even though the projects, i.e. books, etc. and keywords are lost.
If you have a lot of keywords in your current library and want to move them to the new library you can by doing this:
1 - open the old library and select one photo.
2 - type Command+K to brinb up the keyword pane.
3  - click on all of the keywords that are not blue so that all of the keywords are blue.
4 - export that photo to the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option. Select Kind=JPEG and check the two check boxes regarding keywords, locations, etc.
5 - open the new library with iPhoto and import the exported photo from the Desktop.  That will bring in all of the keywords so that you don't have to recereate them one by one in the new library.

  • Photos in iphoto OK but not showing up in imovie library

Help - I'm rying to import some still photos from iphoto into imovie - got most of them, but a few are missing. They show up in iphoto, but when I access them through imovie, they are missing. Even if I flag it or create a new event. I changed the bitmap to jpeg but that didn't make any difference.

Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Does it?
