Rotating a video clip

Is there any way to rotate a video clip in FCE. The video needs to be rotated into an upright position. It is on its left side.
I might add that I found Effects >Perspective >Rotate, but it elongates the video and is now out of proportion.
So is there a way to do this where it doesn't tweak the video itself?
Thanks

Hmmm......something happens to the video when it's rotated. It doesn't play well, and seems like it's in slow motion. The video is of piano playing so now the fingers are way behind the touching of the keyboard and the audio. It's weird. I guess rotating the video also distorts it in that respect?
It also cuts off half of the video image. So where as the entire keyboard could be viewed before, now only 1/2 the keyboard can be viewed.
So is this just something that one has to accept when rotating a video? that it will be changed completely? and will not sync up -- movement to audio? Or should it still sync?

You can't do that in iPhoto. You'll need a video editor like iMovie for the job.

  • How do I rotate a video clip in iMovie when I am unable to click on the Cropping Button in the Adjust menu?

Can you help me rotate my video clip in iMovie ?  I followed the instructions in the Help menu, but was stuck on Step 3  - after I had selected the entire Clip and then was unable to click  on the "Cropping Button".

Are you in the timeline? You can't access the crop button if the clip is in the browser.

  • Rotate a video clip and arbitrary amount (not as much as 90 degrees)

I would like to rotate a video clip by a small amount (3-5 degrees) because I didn't have my tripod level when I shot it. This is something I can do in Photoshop with stills. I think it may be possible in FCE if I enlarge the image first. Can anyone talk me through it. I've checked the previous discussions and can't find the full answer to this.
    Thanks
    John

    1. Make sure the footage is not interlaced.
That means it should be progressive, which is the same as Field Dominance: None.
    2. Open the clip in the Viewer.
    3. Click on the Motion Tab.
    4. Adjust Rotation.
    5. Adjust Scale to eliminate black around the edges.

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app.  I am certain other applications also need this information.  Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information.  Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. Thank you!

No.  You'll need to use Quicktime Player to rotate and export as a new file. It's explained my léonie in this topic: Movie clip rotation

  • How to rotate a video clip 90 degrees?

I have a video clip that was shot with the camera held sideways, and so the clip is on its side and looks really crappy. How do I rotate it so it looks correct?

The cf/x turn clip iMovie plug-in has some limitations: It doesn't properly work with interlaced input because also the interlacing lines are simply rotated and this doesn't look good on a TV! So you should use it only for progressive material or deinterlace the input. It can't rotate the material without cropping and it doesn't preserve the correct aspect ratio when rotating rectangular pixels).
If that disturbs you and you are willing to do it the hard way, see:

  • Can you rotate a video clip?

I have shot some video holding my camcorder sideways and upside down. Is there a was to "turn" the video in iMovie so it is displayed the right side up?
    Thanks

Yes, use the Crop, Rotate, Ken Burns Tool. You can find the tool on the middle toolbar on the right, or you can find it in the Clip Inspector. You can bring up the Clip Inspector by selecting a clip and clicking on the little gear icon.

  • Rotate a video clip

    Hello,
I video taped something but the camera was on a bit of an angle...is there a plug-in or software that will allow me to custom rotate it so that i can then re-import it back into imovie '06 and continue with my editing?
    Thanks much!
    Mike

You can do this using TransformMovie, available here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21859
Also, MPEG Streamclip can rotate video while maintaining the aspect ratio as well as the interlacing when converting to DV, which is what iMovie prefers as an input:

  • Rotate Video Clips in iMovie

I am fairly new to this whole operating system, and while it works 5million times better than what I'm used to, there are still several kinks in the system that I need a bit of help working out:
I recently took a video on my digital camera that was oriented sideways. Consequently, when I try to watch it on my computer, either in Quicktime or in iMovie, it plays sideways. Is it possible (Without spending thirty dollars to "go pro" in Quicktime) to rotate my video clip 90 degrees so that I can watch my movie in its proper orientation?

    Hi Lauren,
    welcome to this forum
you HAVE to spend money… you can pay Apple (to buy QTpro), or

any maybe others, google for "iMovie plug-in"
free is the mind, but not software

  • Rotating video clip but losing audio?

    this is my situation:
i took a video clip with my digital camera vertically instead of horizontally. so when everything on my camera was imported to iphoto that video clip was imported as a quicktime video. now im trying to figure out a way to rotate the vertical clip so that i dont have to turn my head 90 degrees everytime i watch it. in trying to figure out how to do that, i found an apple download called MPEG Streamclip. That allows me to rotate the clip however two things happens:
    1) the audio is no longer there (the output volume is turned all the way up on the macbook... i promise. i checked at least a dozen times)
    2) the video is now cropped weirdly so that the height is equal to the original width of the vertical video.
help? ive never used imovie before or any of these programs... i just want to enjoy my video...

Here are the instructions for using Streamclip.
You need to be sure to Export to DV--that should prreserve your audio. Before you Export to DV from Streamclip, Set the Zoom to 75% to preserve your dimensions.
Here's how to do it. Put the video clip into iMovie. Export the unrotated clip from iMovie to your desktop as a Full Quality Quicktime movie. Open the Quicktime Movie with Streamclip. From the Streamclip file menu, select Export to DV. When you do that, a panel will open up giving you choices to rotate (i.e., 90%CW (clockwise), etc.) Select the rotation you want. Set the zoom to 75%. Then export the .dv to your desktop and drag the rotated clip into your iMovie project. I have rotated several video clips in this fashion. I understand that you can rotate clips with Quicktime Pro, too, but I have never done it that way (because I don't have Quicktime Pro).
