Rotating Boot Icon of Doom

After installing 10.5 and then running the .4 update I was sailing smoothly. Boot Camp installed and a windows XP partition working as expected. After installing a few applications in OSX and running fine for a few days I shutdown. The next morning upon boot to OSX I get the Apple and the rotating boot symbol which much to my horror spun for > 10 minutes taunting me with it's promise of booting into the OS.
I've got 10.5 on a firewire drive to make for faster installs of the OS and so booted that and ran the disk util / repair which came back with the OK results no errors found. Also ran the permissions check which came back all smiles too.
I'd really hate to re-install this again and any suggestions would be appreciated. Holding down the shift key at boot has the same results no safe mode - nada. Re-setting PRAM with ALT-APPLE P R also has no change in booting into OSX. The apple glares at me while the little circular eye of doom rotates happily forever until I hold down the power and it does it's sad little squealing protest of shutdown.
All through this booting into and running Windows XP is fine ><.
Thanks in advance!

Anyone? Any magic terminal commands? Can I clear the login items / startup apps from terminal when booted off the OSX DVD Image and see if that fixes it?

Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
I will investigate this further to find out why the rotation lock is gone.  Have you check under Settings>Display to see if the setting is listed there.
I look forward to your reply.

  • How can I quit my iPhoto screen that as crashed and locked on. The locked screen has no iPhoto file list on the left and the part of the screen that should have uploaded photos is blank except for the rotating download icon in the centre of screen. Help?I

My SD card reader has caused my iPhoto screen to be locked with no list of files on the lefthand side and a blank main photo area apart from the rotating download icon operating in the centre of the photo part of the screen.
I have tried to quit iphoto but when I restart it the same locked screen appears.
I believe I caused this problem when I removed my SD device without first ejecting it when the blank screen appeared without downloading my new photos.
Can anyone help a 66 year old computer illiterate fool ?.
    Regards

Use Force Quit (under the Apple menu at the top) to close iPhoto.  Then try opening it again.  If it locks up again force quit and try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists.
If the problem does not persist try the following: make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the problem persists in the test library do the following:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • "Efi boot" icon on startup

    Good evening,
Since I've installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp on my iMac, there is a new "Efi boot" icon next to my Macintosh HD and Windows 7 HD icons when I start the computer holding the option key.
This is the same icon as for a CD or DVD.
It appeared after a failed installation attempt and didn't go when the next install finished successfully.
Everything is working fine (Mac OSX and windows).
Should I be concerned about this ?
Is there a way to get rid of this "Efi boot" thing ?
I just used Time Machine to backup everything and have done nothing with Windows 7. Can I scratch my windows partition via Boot Camp utility, format my HD and reinstall everything ? Will it make it disappear ?
I may be over concerned by this, but I like my install to be clean, and apparently, it is not.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Cheers.
    Mathieu
PS: When I turn the computer ON and hold the option key:
    - choosing the Mac OSX partition works fine
    - choosing the windows partition works fine
    - choosing the "Efi boot" icon don't lead anywhere. I assume this is normal, but...

It appeared after a failed installation attempt and didn't go when the next install finished successfully.
Well, depends. Generally it is shown instead of "Macintosh HD" name, not along with. And cosmetic change. But in your case it sort of depends on just what went wrong. And whether you removed the partition or what steps you took.
Normally, there is GPT/GUID 200MB partition, 128MB EFI partitions before and after user volume space.
If you are in Windows and manage computer hard drive, you should see those hidden partitions.
Windows 7 creates a 100MB system recovery partition of its own, that should have been inside the 50GB or whatever you set aside with Boot Camp Assistant, which would have been MSDOS/FAT32 and had to be formatted by Windows 7 installation to NTFS.
Somewhere you did something and I'm unable to simply guess what.

  • What is the rotating rainbow icon?

So for some reason 90% of the time I go to check my email when I try to click on any thing on the page this rotating rainbow pops up and freezes my computer. The only way to get un frozen is to go back to my home page or if its really bad I have to sometimes turn off my computer and start all over again. What is that icon and what can I do to stop it from happening?

Go to: System Preferences / Accounts / Login Items and check to see how many Application are set to open at Login/Startup.
If you have a lot, remove most or all and see if that helps.
Likewise, look at your Dock and check to see how many App's are open? Open App's will have a small blue light on below them. Also note that unlike older OS X versions, Lion wants to keeps all the App's open that you were using in the last session if you don't uncheck the "Keep Apps open" box when you shutdown.
Also note: that while 4GB is a fair amount of RAM, it is not enough to smoothly run OS X and tons of other App's all at the same time.

  • Boot vol icon "movement"

    first my configuration:
    ibook g4, 14-inch, 1.42 ghz ppc, 1.5gb, os 10.5.8
everything runs well. the problem is that when i move the boot volume icon anywhere around the desktop (just rearrangement) it will NOT stay in the location where i put it!!! generally, i prefer to have the boot icon in the top uppermost right corner of the desktop. but when i re-boot the system, the icon moves down two positions and to the left by one position.
when i did a clean install, years ago, and installed all updates, everything was ok...no evidence of this "strange" behavior. then zip, zam, zoom, the boot volume icon doesn't like to stay where its put.
    ideas, thoughts, recommendations??!?!?!!?!???
    many, many thanks in advance.

Click on the Desktop, CMD+J, Arrange by->None, move the boot volume icon to upper, right-hand corner (where I keep miine), and log out and back in or restart. That should do the trick.

  • Weird! RAID icons still in the boot screen after restored them back to norm

I created a software RAID 0 with two 250GB hard disks by using Disk Utility. Installed OSX on them. And I restored them to two separated disks yesterday, Installed OSX on one of them, formated another one for media storage. But weird thing is when I press "alt"key into boot screen, they are still there! Now I have five boot icons- two RAID disks, one OSX, one backup OSX and one for windows. What is wrong with that?? Anyone have the same problem? PLZ help!!!

Thanks BUT problem solved! I reformated the disks using "zero-out" option in Disk Utility and guess what? The stupid icons disappeared!:D "zero-out" formating will take longer than normal formating, about 40 minutes for a 250GB HD.

  • Making an alternate boot disk & make it to boot while primary fails

    Dear all,
Its a new query from me which i hope a chhallenging task for the new comers and a general forum for the experts and specialists.
I am having a intel pc where i loaded Solaris 10 os for x86 in a 40 gb hdd as a primary master c0d0s2.
now i am having one more 40 Gb hdd which i want my system to boot from this when my primary fails. c1d0s2
    How to make it possible
    Regds
    Suseendran .A
    919213540324

Also -- PRAM zap didn't impact the situation; the Mac still shuts down instantly and completely, approximately 15 seconds after the boot icon appears and spokes start rotating.
Next, in a few days: a reinstall of the System on that drive, using archive option.
However, if someone still has any "outside the box" suggestions on what might be wrong / fixable, I'd certaintly like to avoid the System reinstall if possible.
A reminder that I did a full reinstall of the Combo Updater for 10.5.8 a couple of days ago to attempt to repair/replace any corrupted system components, but that had no impact on the problem (didn't really expect any, but it's sometimes worth a try).
Note that my original update to 10.5.8 (with the Combo) was a long time ago, and there were no problems with booting or other behavior at that time. This is a recent development, with no discernible cause or event that might have led to it.

  • Won't Boot internal Start Up Disk

    Hi all,
Today I had to do a hard shut down after my 2009 mac book pro froze. After this, the computer would not boot up again. I get as far as the grey screen, with the rotating "gear icon". It stays on this screen indefinitely.
I tried booting to the recover disk - it did not boot into it
I have tried doing a safe start up - nothing happened
I tried resetting the PRAM - it restarted twice, but after that nothing else changed
I tried doing the fsck -fy command, and nothing really came of that. However, it did say that the OS was "not yet set".
I changed my HDD a few months ago, and have a clone of my hard drive from then. When I plug that hard drive in and try to boot into it, it works, as the computer was a few months ago. I opened the disk utility and repaired my main hard drive, I am currently verifying the partition labled "Macintosh HD" on it. It has so far said (in red) Journal needs to be replayed but volume is read only.
Ive exhausted my knowledge so that leaves me here.
I dont think its my logic board, because I can still boot into my old HDD... but im not sure.
This leaves me thinking it could be my new hard drive that has somehow failed to connect to the Start Up Disk.
Any insight would be much appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Austin.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It looks like the hard drive is damaged. Try to repair it and see if you can use it. However, it looks like it is physically damaged and you will need to replace it.
Your MacBook Pro needs a 2'5" SATA hard drive, and you can buy near any hard drive that meet that requirement. Have a look at OWC for information > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

  • IPod frozen on series of icons

    Hi,
I guess I should preface this by saying that my iPod, which is ~7 mos. old, has been acting oddly for the last month or so, in that it's been freezing about once for every hour of use. Sometimes this would happen in the middle of the song, but most of the times it happened with a song at "0:00"; it would sit there for a moment with no sound, then move to the next song, then move to the next. Somewhere along the line it froze, but a simple reset always fixed the problem.
This afternoon my iPod got stuck on 0:00, so I reset it like usual, but instead of booting up properly, it showed the sad iPod symbol. I brought it home to plug into my PowerBook, but it didn't connect. I did, however, see the low battery sign flash for a moment, so I decided to plug it into the wall to try to charge it.
At this point it is stuck on some sort of odd rotation of icons. First the Apple logo shows up on the screen, and remains there for a few moments. Next the sad iPod icon returns. Then, for just a second, the low battery icon flashes, before it returns to the Apple logo. I haven't touched the iPod for ten minutes and it's still rotating through this series of screens.
This is weird enough that I'll probably have to take it in to an Apple store to get it serviced, but I figured I might as well post here to see if anyone had ever heard of this happening before. Any clues?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

wow i thought i was the only one with this problem, well i love my ipod im a college student and always use it on walks to class and it ****** me off very much when it starts to skip songs and then freeze, and recently i have the series of flashing icons, it is only by luck (after resesting it by hand numerous times) that it returns to normal then dies again. I think the problem is with the battery, ive had it for about 7 months. i just ordered a battery kit i will let you know how it goes. also would you mind letting me know how apple is planning to handle the problem thanks

  • 10.5.2 Updated and now won't Re-Boot

I decided to check for updates last night (approx 10:45pm PST), found the new 10.5.2 update. Downloaded the update, the computer asked for re-start, selected restart button. The computer did some processing prior to shutting off, it shut off, then restarted. Now all I get is the white screen intro with the grey apple and the little circular 'rotating' boot-up processing icon. This has gone on now for about 7 hours since beginning last night without shutting off. I shut it off this morning, waited for about thirty minutes, then restarted. I get the same intro white screen with the grey apple and the little circular 'rotating' boot-up processing icon.
I think the 10.5.2 update was corrupted and destroyed my operating system program. *Now my computer WON'T Reboot*, I'm mad and frustrated, just bought two months ago, it's my first MAC. The darn thing is BROKEN and apple broke it!!! Will warranty support cover this? Is there anything I can do to fix and avoid Apple making the situation worse, like taking my computer pretending to fix it and return an old/pre-used remanuf. one to me? I just want my computer back prior to this 10.5.2 update!!!!!

I've tried searching for a solution but haven't been able to find anything. I downloaded the 10.5.2 software upgrade through the software updater, it logged out of the desktop view of OS X, went to the install screen, and an error message popped up telling me that the installation failed and that the computer needed to be restarted.
After the restart, the Intel Macbook now hangs on the grey apple-logo screen (i'm letting it run at about 45 minutes now because the progress circle is continuing to spin). Here's what I've tried to do thus far:
-gone into single user mode and ran /sbin/fsck -fy (it came back okay; rebooted)
-tried to boot in safe mode (with the shift key) with no success
I am running a 2.0 GHz Intel Macbook (1st generation) with 1 Gb RAM on 10.5.1 (but unclear which version as of now...)
Reinstalling the OS would be the absolute final option for me since I do not want to lose data on this machine.
