Round tripping fcp motion fcp problem

Hi, FCS3...
i have 2 timelines in the same fcp project, I sent the first one to motion, added some titles/graphics, saved in motion and upon returning to fcp the changes were present, only requiring render.
with the 2nd timeline i followed the same procedure, send to motion, added titles etc & saved. However on returning to fcp the changes do not appear. Have tried this 4 or 5 times now and the changes are never reflected. My only way out is to render out in motion which is fine for what i require, but it is bugging me why the difference. The two timelines are composed of the same source material, just different edits.
Any ideas?

Are you making sure that "embed Motion project" is checked in the Send To dialog box every time?

  • FCP quits when making round trip to motion

When I try to make to make the round trip with one or more clips to motion(using "sendto" and with "embed" ticked on), everything seems to work fine, but when I save the motion project and quit motion FCP just quits "unexpectedly".
When I then restart FCP, I can import the saved motion project, but as soon as I try to play it in the viewer, or I drop it in the timeline, FCP quits again...
    Any advice ?

You'd be answering your own question.
The workflow for colorgrade has evolved over the last twenty or so years (in video) and over the last better part of a century in film as the final step, after everything was LOCKED. Its kind of why this application was first named "Final Touch".... well, it was sort of a clever reference to "Final Cut"... but... we know how that worked out.
It would be a bit misleading to conceptualize COLOR as a kind of really fancy 3-way, but the fact remains that as an external application, it creates all new media, independent in most ways from the original sources. We can understand that as an extension of the workflow from the days of linear tape-to-tape, when an entirely new, "Color-Correct" Master was created. Some flexibility can be built in to the return trip with the use of handles... but it can also turn into a whole other can'o'worms. Keyframed stuff can get out of sync.... etc.

  • Is it possible to round trip with Motion 5?

I just want a send to motion feature. Are there 3rd party plugins that can do that for me? I would totally pay for it.

Absolutely correct. (Wonder how many feature requests have been submitted for this…)

  • Round Trip problems with FCP, Motion and 16:9

    Hello all-
I've been having some problems with FCP5 and Motion 2. I am working with anamorphic footage (mini dv), and my problem lies in trying to use the "send to" feature in FCP to Motion 2. If I send some footage to Motion 2, edit it, and then go back to FCP to look at my edit, the anamorphic flag has been removed... the video is squished and there are black bars on the right and left sides of the film. I can easily fix this if I find the clip in the FCP browser and check the anamorphic flag, then drag and drop that clip over the original in the sequence, but I was wondering if there was an easier way. Is there a way to make it be anamorphic when it comes back into FCP from Motion 2?
    Thanks!

Yes, it loses the anamorphic flag on round trip. Just
ctrl/right-click on the Motion project in your
timeline, select Properties/Format and click on the
    anamorphic setting column.

    Patrick-
Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I've been doing, but I was just wondering if this was an actual bug or not. I guess we will have to wait for Apple to fix it...
BTW- Whenever I check the anamorphic culumn, I always have to re-drag and drop the clip in the timeline again. Is this right? Or should it go ahead and change it in the timeline automatically?
    Thanks again!

  • Motion to FCP round trip color shift

I've been searching all over the web and have found many posts in various forums about the gamma shift that occurs when Motion projects are imported into FCP and then exported out as an MOV (ProRes or H.264), but have yet to find a suitable solution. All of Apple's documentation seems to indicate that using Motion with FCP should be as easy as importing a Motion project to the timeline. Does anyone know how to prevent the gamma shift that ultimately makes Motion elements in the exported MOV appear washed out?
I know that I can enable FCS color matching in QuickTime to adjust the appearance of the MOV, but I'm sending this file to clients that don't use Final Cut and won't have this option; especially those on PC.

Same problem. No grade or LUT. Mac Pro Quad, BM Intensity Pro, JVC DT-V20L1UA.
My test involved NTSC color bars. I exported 10 sec bars out of FCP to a QT, reimported them and cut them back into my sequence. At that point, the imported bars were identical to the fcp bars I'd started with.
After I'd SENT sequence to Color, the bars changed, mostly in lighter in contrast & brightness plus a little hue shift.
After the scene was rendered in Color and round-tripped to FCP, the new "look" came back to fcp
Could it be in the conversion of FCP YUV to Color RGB

  • Soundtrack pro round tripping to FCP

    Hello,
I've been using FCP for a while now but I'm new to soundtrack Pro and working my way through the Apple Pro Training Series: Sound Editing in Final Cut Studio and soundtrack Pro. Everything is going fine and i'm getting into it - even if a bit slowly!
However when I've tried to do the round-tripping back into FCp the file doesn't appear like it says it will after export. I've just done Lesson 3 in the book (with the same thing happening to me in lesson 2) where I have finished my edit in Soundtrack Pro and I go to export, the process bar comes up and then it takes me back to FCP and my OLD sequence but the NEW sequence doesn't appear. The book says the import XML dialog will appear but it doesn't .....
I can import it manually by going to where I have saved the exported file but surely the whole idea of this round-tripping is to do it for you so you don't have to search for it...
Does anyone have any ideas why this is? Is it just as simple as something is ticked or selected somewhere?
    Thanks

  • Why won't simple dissolves make the round trip back to FCP?

I have read in the Color manual and in certain places (here and the COW), that simple video transitions should be able to make the round trip back from Color to Final Cut Pro.  I have a video that I prepped for Color, only it does contain a few cross dissolves.  Everything is on one track, and the grading is done.  I see my dissolves in the Color timeline.  When I go back to FCP, however, they are gone.  Obviously, with there being no handles on Color video, I can't add them later.
I understand that I could send the clips I want to perform dissolves on with handles over to color, grade them, and send them back and THEN make the dissolve, but this would be an elaborate waste of time.  Is there a setting somewhere that I'm overlooking?  Why, when all indications are that it will work, will it not work?
Any input would save me from re-doing this whole edit.
    Thanks.

    Dimensions 1280x720
Let me know if you need more info.

Color doesn't work with MPEG-2 video.  It works with FCP codecs...  ProRes, DVCPRO HD, HDV, XDCAM.  And only renders out as ProRes or Uncompressed.  I've done over 100 onlines using Color, and every one of them kept the transitions intact.  Every one.  The fact that it isn't for you, means you are doing something wrong...and your codec is the obvious culprit.

  • Round trip problems: Trying to remove "noise print"

    Hi,
I am having trouble understanding the nature of STP's round-trip capabilities.
I have a 40 minute FCP timeline (FCP v5.1.4 on an MacPro). I need to remove some camera "hum" from the majority of the clips (I have 6 clips total).
My problem began about a week ago when creating a sample clip for the client to see, I used the Send To > STP Multi-track project. I opened the audio clips in the waveform editor and did a reduce noise print for both clips (I had to do this twice for each side of the stereo clips). When going back to FC, I felt the reduce noise was too strong, so I tried to return to the ST Multitrack project and could not undo the reduce noise print. When I checked the actual "capture" clip in the FCP Capture Scratch folder - the reduce noise is saved onto the clip - How and why did STP make that a destructive edit?
My second issue is with regards to removing the noise print from all the other clips. Do I need to individually edit each clip segment to reduce the noise print? And if so - is there a way to do this non-destructively?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    -J

I'm guessing here a little . . . you may have done a save when in "audio file project". That will over write a master clip's audio. Simply return to the multitrack project and do a save there instead. Then, the effects will be saved to the sent file, not the master clip.
Also, anytime I know I'm going to be doing some "heavy duty" audio sweetening, I duplicate the timeline. That way, anything goes awry, I've got a clean timeline to return to.

  • 2 round trip problems.

We are working on three timelines that we are round tripping through Color....
Problem #1. Timeline in FCP is DVCPRO HD, 23.98 fps. Send to Color. Color project settings are now set to 29.97 fps DF, grayed out and can not be changed. When rendered and sent back to FCP, sequence settings are 23.98. Is this normal?
Problem #2. Only 1 of our timelines (the last one tried) will reconnect with the renders once we roundtrip back to FCP. Two will not. Render files do show up in the correct Finder directory. Sequences are conformed correctly in the (from Color) versions but do not link to the graded render files, they are not color corrected sequences.
I searched for these issues but did not come up with what we are experiencing. Any help is most appreciated.

OK, an update... Problem #2 was solved by saving all our grades in order, then re-sending the sequences to Color, applying saved grades, rendering and resending to FCP. Don't know why the first round didn't work.
Question #1 remains, why the mismatch in frame rate?
EDIT: SOLUTION FOUND... the culprit? PSD file as nested sequence (layered file) caused the frame rate issues, and possibly the roundtrip issue as well.

  • Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8 UML Round Trip Engineering Problem on Linux

    Hi all,
I know Linux is an unsupported platform but I thought I'd mention that the "Navigate to Source" context menu when trying to generate source from UML is missing.
If you try to work through the "UML Modeling: Developing Applications" tutorial (http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jsenterprise/learning/tutorials/jse8/uml_fe.html) on a linux box, everything goes to plan until step 3 "Choose Navigate To Source from the contextual menu" of the "Continuing Development Using Round Trip Engineering" section.
I haven't tested it on Solaris but it definately appears on Windows.
    Cheers!
    Mike.

I just tried on JDS3 Linux and I was able to complete this tutorial from the beginning to the end without any issue. I tried the Navigate to Source option on all classes from the project tree under the "bankpack" package node and source file for all classes were opened in the source editors. In fact, all UML quickstart tutorials have been tested and working as expected on all platforms including JDS3 Linux.
Which Linux system are you having this problem on?
Which JSE 8 build are you using (look at product line from Help->About, click on Detail tab)?
Are you able to see "Navigate to Source" from the contextual menu for any other class from this tutorial?
As Trey indicated in his response that the source must exist to have this menu option, do you see the corresponding source file generated in the Java project?
    Thanks,

  • PPro cs6 - Audition cs6 - PPro, round trip problem

I'm having trouble completing the round trip. I got my audio tracks from PPro CS6 to Audition CS6 without problems, right by the manual. But I'm having trouble getting that audio work back  into PPro.
I'm working a mid-sized project (one hour class, two cameras, etc. headed for DVD). Got edit lock. Everything is done now except for cleaning up audio. After the audio I can send the whole lot to Encore for DVD making. But first, audio.
Took the entire sequence to Audition  via PPro's  "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..."  path. This worked just fine. It pushed all the audio files to Audition, Audition opened up and gave me a "make an Audition project" dialog box, etc. Nearly 100 files came over to Audition, on the right tracks, in the right order. Very nice. Made my changes. So far so good.
What I've read in the manual says that all I have to do when I'm done is "File...Save" in Audition, then PPro will have and use the changes. Sorta like Dynamic Link, but different. So I did the the project save.
At this point, things deviated a little from the plan. I started up PPro, opened the project, and no sign of the Audition work. Can't find a file anywhere in the project panel that says Audition on it. The files on the timeline are still the dark green of the multi-camera edit, not the lighter green of an Audition file. When I've done this for individual clips, I've gotten back a file with a name like "*Audio Extracted_1.wav" that shows up with the same green as the Audition icon on my desktop.
So I thought, fine. Not as easy as I had hoped. I'll just have to import it manually. But PPro doesn't seem to have any idea how to deal with a *.sesx file, which is the project file from Audition.
Should I be exporting, say, a *.wav file from Audition (how?) and import that into PPro? And if I do, is there a good workflow to re-sync this audio with my video tracks?
I'm confused. Don't know what I did wrong. Don't know what do to fix it. Don't know how to avoid this in the future. So any help gratefully received.
    Bruce Watson

    OK, now I *am* confused.
Just did it again (a different DVD project however), as described in my original post. This time PPro stayed open for me. So I sent all the sequence audio files to Audition via the "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..." comman, then did my editing in Audition, and saved it the Audition project. Go back to PPro, and... nothing. No sign of any file from Audition in the project panel. No sign on the time line. No sign of any Audition file anywhere in PPro that I can find.
What gives? What am I doing wrong?
What I did get was a folder at the same directory level as my PPro project file, a folder in it with the project_name I gave Auditon when it opened from the PPro  "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..." command, and then two files for every clip in the project (a *.wav and a *.pkf), and finally two more files, a project_name.xml and a project_name.xml.sesx.
I suppose I can export a *.wav file to PPro manually. Worked before. But I'd like to learn the "correct" way, the way Adobe intends it to work.
Darned if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong though. Help???

  • When round tripping with photoshop cc, i get a saved psd file with my original raw,the problem is these are high file sizes and taking a lot of space, can i stop this?

when round tripping with photoshop cc, i get a saved psd file with my original raw,the problem is these are high file sizes and taking a lot of space, can i stop this?

That's not the workflow that I use. I have my Lightroom preferences set to create TIF images when going to Photoshop. I keep the original raw file and the TIF image (usually reduced to an 8-bit image) and only export JPEG's when they are needed to send to a lab or to send to someone over the Internet. JPEG files are highly compressed. I only create them when they are needed, and they are discarded as soon as they have been used for their intended purpose. I keep the raw file and the Photoshop-created TIF in my library. This requires extra disk space. But I always have the highest quality files available.

Has anyone had the same problem ?? I would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks,

    I found the solution :
The database was running with a multibyte characterset (UTF8).
After changing that to WE8ISO8859P1 everything worked fine.
It is strange that Oracle suggest to use UTF8 when installing the new database (9i)
and on the other hand doesn't support multibyte charactersets for several of the XML-products.
    Cheers,

  • Round trip from photoshop or portraiture causes problems(TIFF)

And always has to be honest.  2 different computers, with this new LR build and and several before it.  Mac OS latest everything and previous builds..  Macbook Pro and imac..
Edit in photoshop CS5 (and previous versions) as a TIFF, apply clone corrections and liquify fashion portraits.  Save and close and re-open for some final tweaks in Lightroom.  I still get erratic sliders, slow updates when moving sliders and jumping bars to previous values on TIFFs only.  Even worse when i edit in Portraiture App and skin smooth, save tiff and return to lightroom.  It takes a about 3 minutes to even show itself before editing, keeps flashing up then dissapearing again.
If i remove Tiffs that have been through photoshop or portraiture and synchronise the folder to import them back into Lightoom my problems disapear..  but its tiring.  I now find myself using C1 more and more because the transitions between apps are smooth and problem free.  However i prefer the flexibilty, speed and control of LRs functions
Others must be experiance this, it can't be fate this is happening on two different computers, old computers that have been replaced and previous versions of Mac OS and Lightroom.

Ernie, the photos are captured by Canon XTi so they are in CR2, saved to my internal HD and then "loaded" to Aperture as referenced files.
As for PS CS3, I am not sure whether I have it set up as a scratch disk or not (if you could let me know where to check it).
Yesterday, I did yet another round trip and found out that when I finish in PS and SAVE and CLOSE, then the file shows up properly in Aperture. What I was doing before was I SAVEd if but did not close. Then I would SAVE AS in PS to make sure I have some kind of a version of the file if the one in Aperture fails to work.
So it seems I cracked it but I would still like to hear what you have to say, or anyone for that matter. It seems to me that the SAVE-CLOSE is crucial.

  • Problem round tripping dpx PPro CS6

hi, I'm having problems finding the correct dpx export settings to maintain the levels as the original video files.
The project is from the 25fps 1080p DSLR template.
I've tested the exporting dpx at 8bit, full range (LOG)  and over range (LOG)  options and at max bitdepth where available.
When reimporting the dpx images into the same project to check levels and setting source characteristics to match exported characteristics for each file, ie: LOG where necessary including black and white points, on dropping them along side the original video the levels in each dpx are within the 0.0 to 1.0 range in the YC Waveform. My original video source file is > 1.0 in the YC Waveform.
I expected to see the same waveform as source in particular for the LOG exports. My understanding is that an inverse LOG op would be done, (preview in bin certainly shows gamma applied preview on LOG sources on setting import characteristics) that the result would be identical in levels to the source. The whole point of transferring 8bit full levels video as RGB image sequences at 10bit is to be able to round trip without clipping or clamping? I've tested the various dpx import options like 8bit levels, 16bit levels or 0.0 to 1.0 all show the same compressed waveform compared to original.
    Source files are here:
The original Canon T2i MOV remuxed to remove full range flag metadata to avoid Premiere h264 codec messing with luma levels on import. So get the full 0 - 255 luma. Used in the project above.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/74780302/MVI_0907.mp4
The original Canon T2i MOV to compare with the mp4 above full range flag still on. Premiere mess's with luma levels in the naive file on import giving 16 - 235 luma. Not used in project.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/74780302/MVI_0907.MOV
    dpx exports as described above:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/74780302/dpxs.zip
I wonder if someone could explain what settings are necessary to round trip dpx.

ProEXR plugin (Trial) solves the problem, round tripping full range video to levels > 1.0 (over IRE 100%) in image sequences works, first time no hassle. DPX in CS6 appears to be incapable of doing the same even in LOG. OpenEXR better route anyway.
