Round tripping PSD in Cp7/TCS5???

I’m also continually challenged with round-tripping PSD files in Captivate. I can import a PSD layer, but I can’t update the PSD from Cp if the original changes. So I figured that after editing the PSD file I would just import the PSD layer again. But since the PSD layer name hasn't changed, the image in the Cp library doesn't change! So I need to delete the media from the CP library, import the PSD again, and rework each slide where that image was used. Timeline, image properties, etc. Utterly ridiculous!
From my research it seems like round tripping PSD is only an eLearning suite feature, but we’re using Tech Comm Suite. It’s very frustrating and time consuming to work around this arbitrarily disabled function. Especially considering the money we've spent for 4 TCS suites. Why is this functionality not enabled for TCS? I submitted a bug report / feature request and sent it down the black hole to India.
Another stupid inconsiderate decision choice from Adobe. Articulate is looking better every day.

Sorry Sreekanth, but your responses doesn't make sense to me. If Photoshop not being part of TCS is an issue then why is "Import a Photoshop file" an option in Captivate? Further how can Cp see the PSDs as folders in the library, with the PSD layers as images? Also, the fact that Illustrator was included in TCS4 was meaningless since we couldn't import an AI file direct to Cp anyway. We had to export from Illustrator to some other format, like PNG. If we needed to retain transparency of the image, well that was a gamble. By placing AI files into a PSD, then importing the PSD into Cp we had a workflow that retained the image source PSD and AI files, and retained transparencies. If updating a PSD in Cp 6/7 standalone does work, then it looks to us that Adobe did remove functionality when packaging Cp into TCS.
And I did confirm my requirements with an Adobe sales rep before we upgraded to TCS5. I specifically identified this issue to him as part of TCS4. He was surprised that a premium suite like TCS would not offer an option like this. Especially since ELS did include it. He promised to look into it and get back to me. He followed up with email questions about versions of my softwere, but the discussion went quiet and I received no more replies to my inquires.
We've always purchased Photoshop and Illustrator separately. I didn't know these have gone to Creative Cloud only. As technical content developers and curriculum designers we've always used those for our grapic design. It was always weird to us that TCS and ELS were packaged with Photoshop or Illustrator differently.

when round tripping with photoshop cc, i get a saved psd file with my original raw,the problem is these are high file sizes and taking a lot of space, can i stop this?

That's not the workflow that I use. I have my Lightroom preferences set to create TIF images when going to Photoshop. I keep the original raw file and the TIF image (usually reduced to an 8-bit image) and only export JPEG's when they are needed to send to a lab or to send to someone over the Internet. JPEG files are highly compressed. I only create them when they are needed, and they are discarded as soon as they have been used for their intended purpose. I keep the raw file and the Photoshop-created TIF in my library. This requires extra disk space. But I always have the highest quality files available.

  • Round trip to PS CS3 does not show the saved image in Aperture 2.1.1

Good evening everyone; I hope someone can help me to solve this.
I have PS CS3 set as my external photo processing app (exports are PSD 16-bit 300 dpi) in Aperture 2.1.1. When I process the picture in CS3 and then save it(mind you I only SAVE, I do not do SAVE AS) as PSD (or TIFF) Aperture only shows me the original file in preview with the little circle informing me about the round trip to CS3. So the processed file does not show. Instead I only see two identical versions of the same photo.( I mean, I see the master and the version with the little circle).
If I save the work in PS CS3 as jpeg and then import into Aperture, it shows fine. When trying to import the processed and saved PSD and TIFF files, Aperture only shows the original file.
If it helps, I am working on layered pictures (HDR) where I use different parts of different pictures to get wide dynamic range. I export 3 or so photos from Aperture at once to CS3, process them into one, flatten the picture and save it.
And then Aperture just shows me the original file as version.
I have done this before 2.1.1 and it worked. Not sure if I have changed anything that might be causing this.
    Thank you for your ideas.

I am sure it is not stacked under the original, unfortunately. Any other tips?
Also, as I mentioned earlier, even if I save the processed file in CS3 as PSD (so I use SAVE AS) and then try to import it into Aperture, it "magically" only shows the orginal (as if it was just importing some layer).

  • Round trip from Aperture to PS CS3 and back problem

Hi everyone; I hope someone can help me to solve this. I posted it before but the only suggestion I got was to check if the processed photo is not stacked under, which it isn't.
I have PS CS3 set as my external photo processing app (exports are PSD 16-bit 300 dpi) in Aperture 2.1.1. If I save the work in PS CS3 as jpeg and then import into Aperture, it shows fine. When trying to import the processed and saved PSD and TIFF files, Aperture only shows the original file.

And then Aperture just shows me the original file as version. I really need your help with this.
I have done this before 2.1.1 and it worked. Not sure if I have changed anything that might be causing this.
    Thank you for your ideas.

Ernie, the photos are captured by Canon XTi so they are in CR2, saved to my internal HD and then "loaded" to Aperture as referenced files.
As for PS CS3, I am not sure whether I have it set up as a scratch disk or not (if you could let me know where to check it).
Yesterday, I did yet another round trip and found out that when I finish in PS and SAVE and CLOSE, then the file shows up properly in Aperture. What I was doing before was I SAVEd if but did not close. Then I would SAVE AS in PS to make sure I have some kind of a version of the file if the one in Aperture fails to work.
So it seems I cracked it but I would still like to hear what you have to say, or anyone for that matter. It seems to me that the SAVE-CLOSE is crucial.

  • Aperture 3.03 & Photoshop CS4 round-trip

    I'm trying to make a round-trip between Aperture 3.03 and CS4 Photoshop.
Background: I've chosen CS4 Photoshop as my external editor - 16-bit PSD
Problem: When I select an image and "Edit with CS4", I successfully launch the image in CS4. I made a filter change (Lens Correction) and then did a "SAVE" within CS4. The PS version appears "very briefly" within Aperture 3.03 and then disappears.
Attempt at a solution: Tossed "com.apple.Aperture.plist" preferences file and re-launched Aperture.... result - CS4 edited version still disappears in Aperture browser window.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.
    Dale

Ensure maximise compatibility is checked when you save the psd file.
Ensure you're in RGB colour space.
What happens when you quit and re-open aperture does it show for a second or stay disappear - does it show a dotted outline? Can you open the file in full screen?
    Thanks

    Hi,
You could try resetting your LR preferences file - this may also be corrupted or have issues.Do you have many presets, plugins etc in LR? You may need to reinstall these if you do this.
Are you on PC or MAC?
Info on location of your prefs file can be found here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84313.html
You could rename the file extension to .old which would allow you to keep it as a backup.
If you have tried all this then you may need to do a clean install of PS then Lightroom. If you uninstall both and backup & delete remaining folders this should resolve this issue and may be the quickest way to fix..
What is the full exact wording of the message? Also have you tried using PSD in your external editing settings in LR?
Couple of things for you to try..

  • 2 round-tripping questions

I just went into my external editor (photoshop elements) and edited a photo that I had exported into PSE from within aperture. I have 2 questions.
    1. I have no clue how to make that edited version appear in aperture now. I have tried saving it under three different names. I have turned off the external editor. How do you get back to aperture and see the newly edited photo? There must be something easy I am missing.
    2. Can I run my external editor by itself and import a photo from my aperture library without turning on aperture? Or must I always export the photo out of aperture and into the external editor?
    Thanks so much in advance.
p.s. I even listened to the "round-tripping" podcast on Inside Aperture. Made it sound so easy.

Keep in mind every time you open an image with the
external editor a new master is created (psd or tiff)
and will increase the size of your Library.
-- or rather, every time you open a new image, or make any Aperture adjustments to an externally-edited image.
If you edit a file in an external editor and save it, and then select it again later and again choose Open with External Editor, as long as you haven't adjusted it meanwhile in Aperture, the same version will be sent rather than a new one being created. This puts a premium on organizing your workflow so that external editing is normally the last thing you do to an image, though you're not limited to that if you need to work the other way.

  • TIFF round trip between A3 and PS CS5

Hello, I have one question that's been bugging me for the last few days.
I set Aperture 3 to use 16 bit TIFF files for round tripping between A3 and Photoshop CS5. When PS opens it actually calls Camera Raw. I then open the file do the adjustments in PS and save the final image. However, when I go back to Aperture, Aperture does not update the preview of the final image. If I set Aperture to use PSD files the round trip works great, but with the PSD file I cannot invoke Camera Raw from within CS5 when using smart objects.
Has anyone experienced this before? am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks!!!
    Mariano

Photoshop in the normal course would not call Camera Raw for dealing with the TIFFs sent for external editing -- have you set something in Photoshop CS5 to cause all TIFFs to be opened that way?
Since Aperture adjustments will do everything the camera raw display can to in Photoshop, it seems little benefit would come from then using the camera raw display in Photoshop for anything coming from Aperture for editing?
I use TIFF as the format to send to PS CS5 for editing and all is working fine, btw.

  • Importing Photoshop "round trip" extra versions

When I need to use Photoshop on an image cataloged under LR, I typically will use the "round trip" process whereby LR creates a TIFF or PSD of the image and passes it to Photoshop. I'm assuming that LR catalogs the new file before invoking Photoshop. (Is that true?) Now, I will often save a low-res jpg of a file I've been working on (making sure it has an appropriate unique name), or I might produce other files (PSDs, JPGs, etc.) in the process of working on the original file received from LR. Those files are *not* automatically imported/cataloged by LR. Is there a way of making that happen without having to manually import the new files (and add to the stack created for the master and initial edited files)?
I envision an automation hook and script to LR (similar to LR's passing the original file to PS) whereby I could pass a file back to LR and tell LR to catalog it. Presumably the filename (identical except for a distinguishing character or extension) would end up right next to the original, the originally edited file, and any other versions I may have created while working on that file.
Sorry for the long way of asking a question. Any thoughts, ideas, solutions?
    dds

I am having the same issue. If you don't modify the file name it seems to do the round trip fine. Once the file name changes or I change the file format I need to import the new photo and re-stack the photos in LR. If there is not a way to do multiple round trips we should add it to the feature request forum. I did not know how much I took this for granted in Bridge. Perhaps if I make my new folders auto import? I will try this tomorrow and let you know how it works...

  • 2 round trip problems.

We are working on three timelines that we are round tripping through Color....
Problem #1. Timeline in FCP is DVCPRO HD, 23.98 fps. Send to Color. Color project settings are now set to 29.97 fps DF, grayed out and can not be changed. When rendered and sent back to FCP, sequence settings are 23.98. Is this normal?
Problem #2. Only 1 of our timelines (the last one tried) will reconnect with the renders once we roundtrip back to FCP. Two will not. Render files do show up in the correct Finder directory. Sequences are conformed correctly in the (from Color) versions but do not link to the graded render files, they are not color corrected sequences.
I searched for these issues but did not come up with what we are experiencing. Any help is most appreciated.

OK, an update... Problem #2 was solved by saving all our grades in order, then re-sending the sequences to Color, applying saved grades, rendering and resending to FCP. Don't know why the first round didn't work.
Question #1 remains, why the mismatch in frame rate?
EDIT: SOLUTION FOUND... the culprit? PSD file as nested sequence (layered file) caused the frame rate issues, and possibly the roundtrip issue as well.

  • Pictures round-tripped to Elements are correct in Browser but not in Viewer

    Hi all,
This is a bit weird.  When I edit a photo in Photoshop Elements 10 (and then "save" and thereby send it back to Aperture), the edited photo shows up correctly edited in the Aperture browser, but it's uncorrected in the viewer.  I always use the "Split View," and so the corrected photo appears among the thumbnails, but when I click on it, the photo in the viewer doesn't have the PSE corrections!  Weird.  This worked well for many many months, but now doesn't seem to work.  If I close out of Aperture and come back in, the photos are correct in the viewer and the browser.  Any ideas?  (These are correctly saved -- not "saved as" -- in Photoshop.  And it worked well for months.  No need to discuss saving and round-tripping.)  Thank you!

    Mark,
maybe this is caused by this bug:

  • Trouble with Round trip between Soundtrack Pro 2 and Final Cut Pro 6

I have edited a home movie together. I then have sent the sequence to Color for grading and then after completing the Color changes and Rendering. I sent it back to Final Cut Pro. It starts out working fine but during the transfer process it stops at somewhere between 50% and 60%. It is during the "Importing XML Data" phase. It just sits there and does not change and I have to force quit to get out of it. The exact same thing happens when I try to round trip from Soundtrack Pro 2 back to Final Cut Pro. So I am unable to make use of the changes I make in these programs.
This is a round trip process that I have successfully made many times before. Nothing has changed. I am working in Final Cut Studio 2 with the latest updates on an Intel Mac. Any advice on how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

    Thanks.
What's I've been doing is exporting the Soundtrack files as AIFF files, then importing them into Final Cut...
It's working... at least well enough. Still seems harder then just being able to go back and forth between the two applications.
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8 UML Round Trip Engineering Problem on Linux

    Hi all,
I know Linux is an unsupported platform but I thought I'd mention that the "Navigate to Source" context menu when trying to generate source from UML is missing.
If you try to work through the "UML Modeling: Developing Applications" tutorial (http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jsenterprise/learning/tutorials/jse8/uml_fe.html) on a linux box, everything goes to plan until step 3 "Choose Navigate To Source from the contextual menu" of the "Continuing Development Using Round Trip Engineering" section.
I haven't tested it on Solaris but it definately appears on Windows.
    Cheers!
    Mike.

I just tried on JDS3 Linux and I was able to complete this tutorial from the beginning to the end without any issue. I tried the Navigate to Source option on all classes from the project tree under the "bankpack" package node and source file for all classes were opened in the source editors. In fact, all UML quickstart tutorials have been tested and working as expected on all platforms including JDS3 Linux.
Which Linux system are you having this problem on?
Which JSE 8 build are you using (look at product line from Help->About, click on Detail tab)?
Are you able to see "Navigate to Source" from the contextual menu for any other class from this tutorial?
As Trey indicated in his response that the source must exist to have this menu option, do you see the corresponding source file generated in the Java project?
    Thanks,

    Good day,
From rumors and small talk with fellow Netweaver technical consultants,
I heard that with PI 7.1 - sending message without round trip  (sending message from one adapter to second adapter without entering the IS) will possible.
    1. Is that true?
2.Where will the mapping take place if necessary?
3.Will our monitoring capabilities will remain (message monitoring,end2end, AFW monitoring)
If any of you experienced with PI 7.1 ,and currently not buried with development work, I'll appreciate you opinion\knowledge.

  • PPro cs6 - Audition cs6 - PPro, round trip problem

I'm having trouble completing the round trip. I got my audio tracks from PPro CS6 to Audition CS6 without problems, right by the manual. But I'm having trouble getting that audio work back  into PPro.
I'm working a mid-sized project (one hour class, two cameras, etc. headed for DVD). Got edit lock. Everything is done now except for cleaning up audio. After the audio I can send the whole lot to Encore for DVD making. But first, audio.
Took the entire sequence to Audition  via PPro's  "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..."  path. This worked just fine. It pushed all the audio files to Audition, Audition opened up and gave me a "make an Audition project" dialog box, etc. Nearly 100 files came over to Audition, on the right tracks, in the right order. Very nice. Made my changes. So far so good.
What I've read in the manual says that all I have to do when I'm done is "File...Save" in Audition, then PPro will have and use the changes. Sorta like Dynamic Link, but different. So I did the the project save.
At this point, things deviated a little from the plan. I started up PPro, opened the project, and no sign of the Audition work. Can't find a file anywhere in the project panel that says Audition on it. The files on the timeline are still the dark green of the multi-camera edit, not the lighter green of an Audition file. When I've done this for individual clips, I've gotten back a file with a name like "*Audio Extracted_1.wav" that shows up with the same green as the Audition icon on my desktop.
So I thought, fine. Not as easy as I had hoped. I'll just have to import it manually. But PPro doesn't seem to have any idea how to deal with a *.sesx file, which is the project file from Audition.
Should I be exporting, say, a *.wav file from Audition (how?) and import that into PPro? And if I do, is there a good workflow to re-sync this audio with my video tracks?
I'm confused. Don't know what I did wrong. Don't know what do to fix it. Don't know how to avoid this in the future. So any help gratefully received.
    Bruce Watson

    OK, now I *am* confused.
Just did it again (a different DVD project however), as described in my original post. This time PPro stayed open for me. So I sent all the sequence audio files to Audition via the "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..." comman, then did my editing in Audition, and saved it the Audition project. Go back to PPro, and... nothing. No sign of any file from Audition in the project panel. No sign on the time line. No sign of any Audition file anywhere in PPro that I can find.
What gives? What am I doing wrong?
What I did get was a folder at the same directory level as my PPro project file, a folder in it with the project_name I gave Auditon when it opened from the PPro  "Edit...Edit in Adobe Audition...Sequence..." command, and then two files for every clip in the project (a *.wav and a *.pkf), and finally two more files, a project_name.xml and a project_name.xml.sesx.
I suppose I can export a *.wav file to PPro manually. Worked before. But I'd like to learn the "correct" way, the way Adobe intends it to work.
Darned if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong though. Help???
