Roundtrip between FCP and Color

Having much trouble doing a round trip from FCP to color. Sent my sequence to color rendered and saved and tried to send back to FCP but the new sequence from color says all the media offline. I made a new sequence and deleted all the effects, etc and sent to color again but the same problem occurs. All the media is offline. Tried exporting the XML file from color and importing directly into FCP but I get this error:
Mon, Jul 21, 2008, 5:03 PM - Errors Found Importing GTF.xml
<xmeml>: Unknown element <sourceprojecturl> encountered.( line 4 )
Any ideas on what the problem is? The sequence I sent to color has several multiclips and these seem to be the only media offline when I roundtrip back to FCP.
Thanks,
Brittany

The error message you received can be safely ignored.

  • Significant color shift between FCP and COLOR?

    Hi there,
I get a significant color shift when sending footage - either adjusted or unadjusted/unmodified - from FCP to COLOR.
Before anyone asks, the color shift is visible both internally or on an external broadcast preview monitor.
From within COLOR, I 'send' back to FCP this sequence - which is still without any form of adjustment (apart from being sent to COLOR), the apparent color shift is now visible/added to the imported sequence (from Color).
I've tried this on three separate Macs:
    1. The Mac above (6.0.6). (Leopard)
    2. A Mac with the same version of FCP as above. (Snow Leopard)
    3. FCP and on a third Mac with an earlier version of FCP. (Leopard)
Does everyone have the same problem?
If not, does anyone have a solution?
    Cheers,
    Dan
    PS: I've tried:
FCP > Color ProRes contrast shift
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2150962&tstart=75

I had the same problem except that I am using version 1 of color and Final Cut Pro 6. I isolated just the video and double checked that I had no filters or if I did I turned them off. I had a smooth cam filter on one shot, but that didn't effect it. I was then able to send it to color without issue, once I had no sound or filters or transitions messing up the pass between final cut and color. Try doing the same, just duplicate or copy your timeline to a new timeline. I would have rendered your footage out to ProRes however as using the DVC Pro codec is probably not ideal. Color also only works with actual full raster files, not so good going from HDV or DVC Pro as they have an anamorphic frame size. This may be causing issues also.

  • Transporting between FCP and Color... And changes to an edit?

This is my first attempt at color and I have been working on a project for a couple of days now, reading through the manual and trial and error stuff...
Basically I'm a little confused how I get my graded project out of color back into FCP with the changes. I'm hitting send to FCP but am coming back to the project with the ungraded versions I started with in FCP...
Am I able to grade only a few selects from the entire sequence and leave some others for another time, in order to show a client some examples of what we are trying to do?
I'm enjoying using the tools inside color but am finding it very frustrating to come up with a workflow or even kind of understand how the software is working.
Any ideas or help would be great. I've tried for a couple of days now, but have hit a bit of a wall.
    Cheers.

The User Interface is locked. The application is very single-minded to its purpose and no code/CPU cycles were wasted on remapping panes. Its very much a speed issue. Its tuff enuff getting 17 fps on HD the way things are.
In your setup room, you should create a Grades directory for the project where you save oft-used or complex grades. It'd be a place to copy all the grades if you needed to hand-reconform a project. That is -- copy each grade into that folder, create new project and then drag each grade back into the individually appropriate clip. Tedious, but you're not a REAL COLOR user until you've been forced to do it at least once. ;-P
And if you think that's bollocks, wait until you need to figure out how to copy a grade into a keyframe sequence... I don't think that one is in the manual. I'll be watching for that to come up.
If you think post-lock revisions are inconvenient now, think about what it was like to re-open a graded show in the tape-to-tape days. It had to be a serious problem because it came down to these things (a lot of them) --> $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

  • Workflow between FCP and Color

I have been working on a 720P DVCPRO project. I am not sure what the work flow should be for adding in your color correcting stage.
I have edited my project with speed ramps and different effects within Final Cut 6.02. When I rendered my files from Color after making a color correct, I then sent it back to Final Cut.
Once I opened the timeline that color added to my final cut project, All of my transitions were replaced with straight cuts. Also the speed ramps were gone, and any variable speed clip within the timeline had been replaced with 100% speed from the end of the clip i used.
Should this be expected? If so how should I be working on the color correcting stage, or in what order should I be adding effects and timeramps to?
What is the best way to do this?
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

I'll also tell you, again, to read the release notes, the user guide and search the forum as this has been discussed many times already.

  • Roundtripping between FCP and After Effects CS3

What is the best way to get clips from a FCP timeline into After Effects, and then back again? How do i do this without purchasing any additional plugins?
Also, how do i get an entire sequence into After Effects and then back into Final Cut Studio?
Yes, i admit i'm at a very beginning stage of my expertise, but i will apreciate any help in mastering these techniques.

Yeah...if you want separate clips, you cannot do this without Automatic Duck Pro Export for After Effects. YOu can export a self contained file and import that, then export out of AE and back into FCP.
Or use Motion., as Tony says.

  • Work Flow with FCP and color correction

I am looking for a decent workflow between FCP and motion when I need to apply color correction to the clips.
I have a goup of clips in FCP that I would like to send to motion, animate them and send them back to FCP. Problem is I want to use FCP for the color correction- nicer than motion's. The, all bad options I have come up with are:
    1. color correct in FCP and then send to Motion- will not work because filters are not applied in send.
    2. Export the clips as one QT self containned movie- I lose the clip partitioning.
    3. Exports individual clips to QT then into Motion- I lose the clip ordering
    4. Color correct after I get back into FCP from Motion- clip boundaries are lost making applying color correction harder.
    Any ideas?
    Rick

I've done this two ways - both variations on the methods you have outlined. First and simplest and one I used last week on a PSP project was to apply the color correction to the Motion clip (.motn file) after it came back from Motion. This is simple and easy, but if you've done titling, you may not want to color correct that.
The second is as you said to render and export a self contained movie, then import it and copy it onto the timeline above the original clip that produced it, thus (at least organizationally) maintaining a connection between them. I then send the quicktime to Motion.
Sorry I cannot think of another better way of doing it...

  • Color differences between FCP and Motion

Forgive me if I'm breaking any unwritten rules here as I posted this same topic on the Final Cut forum the other day..so bear with me as I hope to find some insight here from the many experienced (and extremely helpful) Motion users on the motion forum.
OK...here's my dilemma. I create a graphic/text page in Motion working with the RGB colors from a style guide provided by an agency. I then drop the motion project into the FCP timeline and the colors between the 2 applications are different.
I'm attaching a link to 2 jpegs that show the different RGB readings with the DigitalColorMeter application.
    http://www.myphotos.yahoo.com/s/218qifk6fseemvbmprlw
In my Motion project the meter tells me that the dark blue color is RGB-11,44,99
In my FCP timeline the meter tells me that the dark blue color is RGB-4,30,79
I gather from some forum research that this may have something to do with gamma levels...my FCP setting has the Imported/StillRGB Video Gamma setting set at Source.
I'm hoping that someone can explain to me why the DigitalColorMeter readings would be different between Motion and FCP...and what I might do to feel confident that my Motion files would import correctly into my FCP timeline.
Thanks in advance to any insight....
    Jay

After some more exploration...turning things on and off, changing sequence/gamma setting, and the like...I now realize what the issue is.
When the background setting in my canvas/edit window is set to black the colors are accurate between motion and FCP.
Once I change the background setting in the canvas/edit window to white or checkerboard there is definitely a shift in color/gamma. Not sure why that is...maybe someone can explain

  • Updating Final Cut Studio 2.01 and workflow between FCP and AE

Hi. I am currently working in FCE 3.5 and am considering purchasing Final Cut Studio 2.01 (new and sealed) as opposed to the latest version since I am running a PowerPC G5. Am I assured of being able to download all the updates for Final Cut Pro 6 and exactly which version would be the latest and final one? Was there ever an FCP v6.5? I do mainly animation/motion graphics and work in After Effects (along w/ Flash, Carrara, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). I understand that the workflow between FCP (as opposed to FCE) and AE is greatly enhanced. Can someone give me an idea of what advantages this new workflow will offer in terms of what I'll be able to accomplish that I can't do now w/ FCE? Also, any other comments on how FCP (as compared to FCE) will benefit me as an animator will be greatly appreciated. Lastly, am I correct in assuming that I will be able to open my FCE 3.5 project files in FCP 6 but not visa versa? Thanks. Jack.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I see that I will need some 3rd-party support in order to realize the benefit of a Final Cut Pro/After Effects workflow. Have another question. What are the kinds of filters that you can keyframe in FCP but not in FCE? And are there many filters in FCP that are not included w/ FCE? As I deal mainly w/ animation as opposed to footage of live video I am trying to justify the investment in Final Cut Studio 2 in terms of it being a benefit to me as an animator. I currently use FCE 3.5 (which includes versions of SoundTrack and LiveType) and After Effects CS3 plus other graphics programs. I would love to be able to work within DVD Studio Pro as iDVD is so limiting as an authoring program but am not sure how much I will benefit from switching from FCE to FCP. This is what I am trying to nail down.

  • Roundtrip between FCP & Motion not working

Hi, I have just upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 with Motion 3. Wanted to try the roundtrip integration between FCP & Motion. When I send to motion, my clips are not recognized in motion, I have to physically reconnect the media in the media tab. I thought it is suppose to be automatic.
Do anyone encounter the same problem as me?

let's go back to the purpose:
I have written a mobile app on which people can during a sports match capture the time of the important moments by pressing buttons.
I then convert the time information into an XML or CSV file that can be read by the different NLE. Given that Sony Vegas allows to import
markers independently from a sequence. Now I look at the same things for Premiere. This allows to edit the highlights very quickly vs watching
    the entire match coverage again.
I try to replicate that on Premiere through the FCP XML, but now that the roundtrip works, the issue is that FCP XML in its structure wants a sequence.
I could imagine to provide a dummy sequence that can be overlayed by the real content just to preserve the markers. Any ideas?
    Regards,
    TK

  • FCP and Color not talking in Leopard

    Hi all,
We have just installed Leopard in our Mac Pro. I sent my sequence from FCP to Color but apparently I don't see my sequence in Color.
I tried doing the same procedure in Tiger OS and it worked.
Any help would be very much appreciated

You may need to re-install COLOR as there is a good possibility that you have corrupted the COLOR/FCP hand-off.
There may also be an issue with your prior User Preferences being ignored, as that path may be broken.

  • "render.mov" file goes offline when roundtripping between FCP & STP

    Hi there
I'm having an issue roundtripping between Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro. I have some clips which need to be de-noised, so I right click and select "Send To > Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project", do the de-noising with no issue, then save the file and return to Final Cut - your standard roundtripping experience.
However, when Final Cut Pro updates the file in the timeline, it brings up a file offline warning, stating that "~/file.stap:render.mov" is missing. I attempt to reconnect the file by opening the .stap package and creating a duplicate of the render.mov file in there, and reconnecting that, however that brings up the error "The file does not have enough audio tracks to reconnect to "file.stap" at time [time] in sequence [sequence]", and the file remains unconnected and silent in the timeline.
I am selecting the "include source audio" option when saving out of STP. It is also worth noting that I have managed to get this to work once this morning, but not since then. It was also not doing it last week, so I'm not sure what I did differently with that first file this morning.
    Any help?
    Cheers!

    Hi there
Sorry to take so long to come back to this but this project had to spend a little bit of time on the backburner whilst I worked on some other projects.
Thanks for your reply Robert, however saving the STP project as a different .stap file and then attempting to reconnect to it brings out the same error.
This is the error window I get:
I've found that exporting the file as an AIFF and reconnecting to that seems to do the trick, however it is a bit of a roundabout way of doing things when you consider the way I'm trying to do it is the way I should be doing it, and a way that used to work. It's also a pain when you consider I have perhaps dozens of audio artifacts that need some form of audio post in Soundtrack Pro for this project alone.

  • Asset length (Runtime) difference between FCP and DVDSP

I have been successfully exporting projects to DVD Studio Pro by using the export to Compressor option in FCP and then importing these assets into DVDSP to author my DVD. By using Compressor to fine tune the compression settings, I have been able to create extended DVDs. On my last project, when I imported the audio asset, the ac3 file was 5 seconds shorter than the FCP timecode. In Compressor when I viewed the incoming asset from FCP in the Inspector window, it showed the correct asset length. I have tried making an interim .mov file, closing FCP, then using compressor, but the result was the same. DVDSP 4.2.1 and FCP 6.0.6

My setup is nothing fancy. The settings are sequence presets for DV NTSC 48Khz in FCP. Specifically, the sequence is a 29.97fps Drop-frame clip with a time code start of 00:00:00;00.
For some reason I don't understand, the audio is being treated as if the sequence is Non-drop. If I export from FCP to a QT file, import the .mov file directly into DVDSP and examine the encoder settings for the video portion, by changing the drop-frame option, I can account for the difference in the timecode. That mystery is solved but I'd still like to know what is happenning on the audio side. This is a method that has worked before without incident.

  • Color discrepancy between FCP and Photoshop

I'm having trouble with a discrepancy b/w FCP text and Photoshop text. We chose a color of 162-56-25 (reddish orange) for FCP text for a project I'm editing. When we created graphics in photoshop and After Effects with those same values, and brought them into final cut, the color ended up being much lighter. Anyone know why? We've got multiple people working on the project, and on the the graphics. I'd like to standardize the color value, instead of having everyone trying to match. Tks!

Sure. But if I'm looking at BOTH the FCP generated text and the Photoshop and AE graphics in final cut, and on the same monitor, shouldn't they look the same? I don't mind if I'm not seeing them with complete accuracy in FCP, i.e. I don't mind if they look slightly different on different monitors, but I want them all to match.
Does that make sense? I guess the key piece of info I left out is that I'm looking at the AE and Photoshop text IN FINAL CUT.

  • Having trouble "roundtripping" between FCP 6 and Soundtrack Pro 2

I've been a FCP user since it first came out, and believe it or not, this is my first attempt at roundtripping with Soundtrack Pro.  Basically the process goes pretty good until it's time to go back to FCP.
Here's my workflow:  In FCP I highlight the audio clip in the timeline.  I select Send To > Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project.  It creates a (sent) file, which I save (Save project with latest clip metadata is selected).  Once the clip opens in Soundtrack Pro, I make the adjustments I need to make (in this case, I'm getting rid of some background noise), then I save (Include Source Audio is selected).
Here's where the problem comes in.  When I go back to FCP, I get the "Some files went offline" warning.  When I try to reconnect, I get the following warning:
    "File Attribute Mismatch
Some attributes of one or more of the files you have chosen do not match the attributes of the original.  This may cause problems within the sequences that are dependent on them.  The attributes that differed are as follows:
    - Media Start and End
Would you like to try to connect them again?"
When I go to the folder where the modified (sent).stap is saved, it opens and plays back fine.  However, it looks like Soundtrack Pro is saving the full clip (from the original footage), not just the selection from my timeline.  I'm assuming this is why I'm getting the "File Mismatch" error (basically it's too long).
Is there a step I'm missing?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First thing to try is resetting your fcp preferences
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
It's also possible your sequence has gotten corrupted.  Try editing a short clip into a new sequence and see if that works.
And what are your sequence settings?
Also, although its a long shot, make sure the frame rate of your easy setup matches the frame rate of your sequence.

  • Roundtripping between Motion and FCP

I created an opening in motion, project settings are:
    720x480
    8bit
    NTSC D1/DV Anamorphic PAR 1.20
    Lower First
    Frame Rate - 25
I started with a template [which explains the 25fps] and I have not been able to change that to 29.97.
My sequence settings in FCP are the same but wgen I bring the Motion project in its 4X3.
If I render the motion project I have the option of changing the Quicktime settings and it exports a 16X9 .mov.
There must be a switch I'm missing somewhere. Does anyone know how so solve this?

I doubt it was intended to work that way. It's a bug. A known bug. One that will hopefully be fixed in a future release. It's not the only bug out there, tho - so reporting it will add to the "fix it" voices...
