Roundtripping Betw. Soundtrack and FCE

I'm trying to get clear on the roundtrip process betw. Soundtrack and Final Cut Express 3.5:
Question: Why in FCE, under 'Send to' is there no link to Soundtrack? It seems that to get the FCE audio clip into Soundtrack I have to go to: File > Export > To Soundtrack.
So what's the difference between 'Send to' and 'Export'?
Thanks.

Soundtrack isn't an audio editing application. The Send to function points the application to the media you're working with using an XML export function. Export actually creates a file for Soundtrack to work with. There is an Export to Soundtrack which is basically to send you video there so you can sync up your audio with it.

  • Why Do The Latest Versions Of Soundtrack and Soundtrack Pro Use .caf Files?

About 3 years ago Soundtrack and Soundtrack Pro started using .caf files instead of .aif ones.
The .caf files appear to take up more space than .aif and of course need rendering before they can be used in FCE/FCP.
So what is the logic behind their use?
I would add that I have skimmed through several articles which claim they have advantages ..... which I can't understand.
I only know that when used normally in FCE/FCP they seem to me a backward step, requiring rendering - almost like using .mp3 but without the space-saving features.

    Here's a link from Apple:
    http://developer.apple.com/DOCUMENTATION/MusicAudio/Reference/CAFSpec/CAFoverview/CAFoverview.html
It touts "unrestricted file size" as one advantage of CAFs. Has any of us ever exceeded the supposed 4GB limit of AIF files?? This is from the page linked above:
"Whereas AIFF, AIFF-C, and WAV files are limited in size to 4 gigabytes, which might represent as little as 15 minutes of audio, CAF files use 64-bit file offsets, eliminating practical limits. A standard CAF file can hold audio data with a playback duration of hundreds of years."

  • I quite by accident ended up with FCE 2, FCE 3.5 Upgrade and FCE 4 Upgrade

To install on my 2004 G5 Power Mac 2.5 Dual.
The FCE 2 came with my computer when I bought it new in late 2004, the others I bought recently.
From what I'm hearing here it appears that the difference between my upgrades and the full version of FCE 4 are; Sound, I think my will retain with the Upgrades. And something else that forgot, I get with the 3.5 Upgrade and then the 4 Upgrade after that, rather than skipping the 3.5 Upgrade.
I ran out of money so I couldn't get FCS 2 that I wanted and I am trying to get the best FCExpress that I can and the most compatible trouble free that I can for my old system.
I am shooting with A New Canon HV20 and I have already upgraded to Leopard 10.5.2 and Quicktime Pro and iLife 08
Should I skip the 3.5 Upgrade and just Upgrade to the 4 or should I Upgrade to 3.5 and then Upgrade to 4, Thank You.

It's definitely a bad idea to have two different versions of Final Cut on the same computer, so the only way you'd be able to do a "dual upgrade" is to fully install FCE3.5 w/ Soundtrack and LiveType, and upon installing FCE4, choose only to install/upgrade FCE itself. If that's possible. If not, you may be able to accomplish the same thing by digging through the installer's package contents on the install DVD.

  • (Former or present users of Premiere 6.5 and  FCE 3.5

    Hi,
Aside from the HD, any benefit or reason to move to FCE 3.5?
I use 6.5 and it has been a solid performer for me. I create my videos in 6.5 and burn them with iDVD. I will be getting a Macbook around the beginning of the year, and I don't think I will be able to use 6.5 with the new OS. I have invested a lot of time in learning 6.5, so I have not been interested in learning a new program.
I would appreciate any comments on this.
    Thank you

I liked Premiere 6.5 as well and there were a few things I preferred over Express like Batch Capture and Audio Mixer and being able to import Video only .. tho these are available in FCP. Latest version of FCE allows you more keyframing options now
What I DO like about FCE is the ability to work with sequences and have multiple projects open at one. I personally prefer the Motion Keyframes (animation) in FCE over Premiere. The Voice Over tool is also pretty cool. I like the smooth integration with programs like Livetype and Soundtrack and iDVD and iTunes. Integration with Photoshop is about the same as with Premiere; very easy.
Mostly I moved to FCE because of the instability of working on a PC based system but at this point I would still opt for FCE. Also good to note that Final Cut has a greater "professional" rep than Premiere; don't know if I've ever seen an ad for a Premiere Editor. True, most places are looking for Final Cut Pro, but FCE is a great, affordable place to start

  • Imported Music From Soundtrack to FCE = Distorted?

I edited a song in Soundtrack and after importing it into FCE for the purpose of using it in a video, the waveform is blown out. What is the cause behind this? It sounds normal in Soundtrack and upon playing it in FCE it starts out fine but as it progresses it sounds horrible.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
iTune purchased songs have build-in DRM thus preventing the use in PRO app like Soundtrack, Final Cut etc.
    That could explain the problem.
Otherwise, open your exported AIFF in quicktime player and check the volume playback to see if the exporting process has induced the distorsion.

  • Audio out of Sync - Final Cut Pro to Soundtrack and back

I have edited some talking head interviews in FCP 7.0.3
When I "Send to Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project" and then send back to Final Cut (by exporting an AIFF)
The audio is 9 frames shorter than the original audio. (The video is 06:29:12 long)
I have checked, and double, triple checked, and all audio is 48.0 KHz
    Both timelines are Non-Drop Frame.
I have also tried the following when importing the XML back in to FCP
    1. Leave Sequence Settings at "auto" with "Override with settings from XML" selected
    2. Change Sequence Settings to "Apple ProRes 422 1920x1080 24fps" with "Override with settings from XML" de-selected.
I have looked and looked through forums and haven't found any real solutions, please help

Apparently, fcp can have a problem with imported audio files if the easy setup frame rate does not match your sequence frame rate.
I've seen this reported as well.
I actually created a new project, set up the "Easy Set Up" to match and ran into the same problem.
Initially the Music Tracks I used were a different audio rate (44.1 vs 48) but I converted those as well.
I'll have to chalk this up to user error, but I've truly been over this project with a fine-tooth comb so many times.
In general, it doesn't seem like there should be so much issue going from Final Cut to Soundtrack and back.
When I get some down time, I'm going to completely recreate this project from
    scratch and see what happens.
Thank you so much for your time Michael.

Working alternating with iPhoto and FCE tgrying to import pictures from iPhoto into FCE suddenly all my 22300 pictures disappeared leaving empty frames. Does somebody know where the pictures could have gone and how can I get them back into iPhoto? Lothar

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Are FCP and FCE user interfaces the same?

I was recently talking to a pro videographer and complaining that I miss the old iMovie, it was so easy and intutive to use, Final Cut Express confuses me, etc. He said that I should try Final Cut Pro because the user interface is better than FCE. Is this true? I thought that FCP and FCE have the same user interface?
I just edit HDV videos for my business or personal videos. I don't do anything "pro." I just want a video editor that's easy, intuitive, and fast to use. I don't edit videos often so I don't want to spend an hour reading the manual every time I edit a 3-minute video, i.e., use FCE. iMovie drives me up the wall.

No. Just download the trial version and see for your self

  • Color fidelity between slides and FCE output

Until the recent past, I have been scanning 35mm slides using a Cannon Canoscan 9900F coupled with Photoshop Elements v 2.0 into FCE v 3.0 on a Mac G-4 with OS 10.4.3. The color fidelity between the slides and final output was reasonably good. Within the past week I have upgraded system software to OS 10.4.8; upgraded Photoshop Elements to v 4.0 and FCE to v3.5.1. Now when I scan slides, the resulting images (both on the desktop and as printed with an Epson stylus 2200) are dark as if the slides were greatly underexposed. The Photoshop Elements correcting or enhancing tools do not solve the problem. I don’t think this is a monitor calibration issue but would welcome any suggestions. Thanks in advance. Jack A

    Hi(Bonjour)!
What is the relation with FCE ? It's seem that is more a problem with MAC OS X itself or photoshop or your scanner than FCE.
    See MAC OS X forum:

I have tried exporting it to movies idvd itunes, and quicktime in a variety of sizes although not the smallest as I want to watch it on my computer and tv. All videos were recorded on an iphone. Apple store couldn't help me and suggested I redo part of the project. It is a really good project and would take hours to redo it . I just want to export it. Can any one please help???

  • AVCHD and FCE 3.5

I'm toying with the possibility of switching from MinDV tapes to AVCHD.
Will that work for me, given that I am on Mac OS X (10.4.11) and FCE 3.5? Are there any drawbacks that mean I might be better off sticking with tape?
    Many thanks

You will have to get FCE4 to use AVCHD.

  • FCE 2 and FCE HD

From the point of view of Tom's book "Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop", is there any significant difference between FCE 2 and FCE HD (the current version) apart from the detail relating to HD.
    Thanks.

No significant differences that I've encountered. (I've got both FCE2 and FCEHD.) And Tom's book is by far the most helpful one on the market.

  • Roundtrip FCP-Soundtrack

Found a good filter/EQ in soundtrack that lets me clean up some audio. When I save it as a loop and try to bring it back into FCP, FCP won't let me import???
I'm still in the stoneage using FCP 4.5 and Soundtrack 1.2, won't be able to upgrade anytime soon ( I know FCP 6 has some wonderful audio cleaning tools in the new version of Soundtrack)

Here's me responding to my own question. You have to export the FCP audio as an .aif file, not export to Soundtrack. Once you are done in Soundtrack, export an .aif out of Soundtrack and it goes back into FCP

  • Canon HF100 and FCE

I just bought the HF100 and need to get a new computer to handle the avchd video. Can someone give me the workflow for editing avchd with FCE or point me to the right place? I have read that imovie and FEC transcode to AIC during log and transfer and drastically increases the file size. I want to do the following:
    1. Record in highest quality on hf100.
    2. transfer to computer in a reasonable amount of time.
    3. edit by adding fades and effects, titles, menus and music
    4. burn about 30 minutes to a one sided standard dvd in SD and another copy to standard dvd in hd to play back on my ps3 without losing any quality on the dvd for my ps3.
    5. What minimum macbook or imac is needed to edit hd efficiently?

To edit AVCHD, you need an intel mac and FCE 4.0. The way that you would do your workflow is as follows:
    1. Make sure you have the right easy setup preset to match your footage
    2. Connect the camera to your computer, boot up FCE, open the log and transfer window
    3. Select the clips or portions of clips to upload, and wait for FCE to ingest the media (this will take maybe a little longer than actual playback of the file. Also, since Apple transcodes to AIC, 10 minutes of video on 1920x1080i60 footage for me on my AVCHD camcorder took up about 15GB of memory. Be prepared to deal with these large file sizes. I suggest having a separate media drive to which you set your capture scratch, so as not to be running both the program and your media from the same drive. I use a 250GB external for my media)
    4. Edit your footage into a movie. If you chose the right Easy Setup preset, no additional rendering should be required unless you add something like a filter or motion. The fades are under transitions, filters under video filters, etc. in the effects tab of the viewer. Titles can be made nicely using the Boris 3D or Boris Crawl generators in the generator pop-up. Music can be added as long as it is DRM free. If you want to use a song that has digital rights management on it (for example, an old song from iTunes) for non-commercial use, follow this link's instructions:
    http://fcpbook.com/Audio4.html
    5. Export to either quicktime movie or using quicktime conversion
    6. Import this movie into iDVD or other DVD authoring software
    7. Burn it to a DVD for watching on your ps3
As I said, only an Intel mac will be able to edit AVCHD. This Mac also has to be running at least Mac OS X 4.11 to use AVCHD. Make sure to have plenty of room on your hard drive (or external) for storage of the files from the capture scratch folder. I would also recommend at least 2GB of RAM for efficient rendering. As long as you meet these requirements when purchasing your computer, you should be fine. I use the new Macbook aluminum 13", which I have often been told is not a good choice for editing, but it fits my needs very well, and edits AVCHD perfectly.
    Hope I was of assistance,

  • QT version for 10.4.11 and FCE 3.5 ?

What is the latest version of QuickTime 7 that works best with OSX 10.4.11 and FCE 3.5 ? Is it QT 7.3? 7.2? 7.1?
I think I heard that you need FCE 3.5.1 with QT 7.3 or higher. However, the FCE 3.5.1 update has not been available on Apple downloads for over a year now, and I've not found it anywhere else, either.

The 3.5.1 update, if I remember rightly, was only for some computers, so it didn't show up in software update for everyone. 10.4.11 requires 7.3 or later. It will not work with QT versions earlier than that unless the OS has been cobbled together.
