Roundtripping between FCP and After Effects CS3

What is the best way to get clips from a FCP timeline into After Effects, and then back again? How do i do this without purchasing any additional plugins?
Also, how do i get an entire sequence into After Effects and then back into Final Cut Studio?
Yes, i admit i'm at a very beginning stage of my expertise, but i will apreciate any help in mastering these techniques.

Yeah...if you want separate clips, you cannot do this without Automatic Duck Pro Export for After Effects. YOu can export a self contained file and import that, then export out of AE and back into FCP.
Or use Motion., as Tony says.

  • Workflow Circuit between FCP and After Effects with HDV

I am trying to set up a workflow circuit with FCP 5.1.1 and AE 7.0 using HDV. We are:
    1. building sequences with FCP
    2. exporting to AE
    3. adding in FX with AE
    4. putting those back into FCP
The footage we are using is compressed with HDV 1080i60 in FCP.
My problem is finding the correct way to export the HDV with FCP. I have tried using Quicktime Conversion but the only option I can find for uncompressed video didn't work when we tried to transfer it.
I think the main problem is that the AE work is being done on PCs and the video that we have tried sending can't be read by PCs. The audio plays through fine but the video shown is nonexistent.
What conversion should we use in FCP that allows us to keep the video uncompressed and in its best quality for use in AE? And what works best on the AE end of it?
Can someone give some advice on steps that they would or have taken for a project of the same ilk.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What's your system setup? What FX exactly (e.g. color correction, or just random FX thrown in every now and then)? What went wrong when you tried using an uncompressed codec?
    1) If everything's on an external FAT32 formatted drive (fat chance, get it?), then i think you could export a quicktime reference of your timeline (choose the option that ends up giving u a tiny file). Then plug the drive into your PC, load the Quicktime Ref (also known as QT Ref) into AE7 and FX away. Then export a QT with HDV 1080i60 specs and reimport into FCP.
    2) If you're only doing occsional FX (e.g. gun flashes, lasers from robots, etc..), and nothing that encompasses the entire length of the project (e.g. color correction), you could export a hashed down QT Conversion of the timeline with whatever decent codec that works (e.g. DV NTSC). Then import into AE7, lay down the video, add your effects. But then before you export your FX, turn OFF your original video layer so all your FX are on a transparent background. Export clips with alpha channel and reimport those into FCP.
    3) Ensure that the PC is using the latest version of quicktime. It may need to be upgraded to whatever version is on the Mac, and it may need to be registered as Pro.

  • 10.5.2 and After Effects CS3

Installed 10.5.2 and the graphics updater on my dual quad core this morning. Importing Photoshop or PICT files into After Effects CS3 is a major mess. These files now import as Pict sequence files of a duration of 1 frame each. This is putting a huge damper on my workflow. Anyone else have this issue? Any fix ideas?

According to the Adobe Forum AE 8.02 is released and should have fixed these issues:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c05d846/0
See the bottom of the thread.
I have 8.02 as well as QT 7.4 installed but I'm not a real AE user yet so I can't speak to if the fix corrects everything. As far as FCP goes, I've seen no issues with QT 7.4. It installed before I saw all the threads warning against it but so far I've seen no issues.

  • Aspect HD and After Effects CS3:

I get the following error in After Effects CS3:
After Effects error: Failed to build Graph

The movie has the following settings:
    1920 x 1080 (1.00)
    29.fps
    Millions of Colors+ (Straight)
    No Compression
I am following the tutorial here:
    http://supportcenteronline.com/ics/s...asp?deptID=614
Any ideas why I get this error?
    Thanks,
    Simon

No idea, but the message sounds like it is not able to calculate the data rate for the stream and thus cannot compress it. From what little source footage I have in CF CoDecs, I generally get the impression that it's all rather twitchy in combination with AE, so this may be more a matter of tweaking some settings in the CoDec which the CF people could tell you better than me, obviously.

  • OpenGL, nVidia 8600M GT 128mb and After Effects CS3 8.0.2

I've just sold my one year old macbook and bought a new (not so new now, revision C), 2.2 ghz nVidia 128 mb macbook pro.
I did that cause I work with After Effects and thought a bigger screen and dedicated graphics with OpenGL would improve my performance. Sure it did, mainly because I jumped from 1g RAM to 2g in the new computer.
But I'm experiencing a irritating bug that makes AE crash. I've searched in forums, adobe website itself, upgrade to 8.0.1, 8.0.2, made the Nvidia update via Software Update from Apple, and the problems keeps going.
It is mentioned in this document from Adobe: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/view...2244&sliceId=1
"After Effects error: AE_OpenGL: Create texture error. (5065 :: 0)"
In the solutions proposed in the document it says: "Disable OpenGL", "remove OpenGL plugin" and "Optimize the Texture Memory preference", among other things.
Disabling OpenGL wouldn't make my new graphic card useless in this case ? In the document, Adobe says I wouldn't have problems setting the Texture Memory preference because OSX makes it automatically. But at the same time says that the ideal should be 80% from my memory. If I have 128, 80% is 102.4, right ? My config is set to 114. Have OSX failed calculating ?
Thanks, and sorry for the long thread.

There is a lot of conflicting and/or otherwise terrible info being posted as workarounds to getting the ae cs3 801 and 802 update to actually install. I have read everything from reinstalling the entire creative suite, to writing a custom script that disables the app running list in the config.xml. Hahaha what?! Tech support seems to need a week off...
Ok here's how to get it to install:
#1: go here and delete everything in it--> **user>appdata>local>temp>patcher** (this is in Vista...xp users will get there via c:\docs and settings...)
#2: install the update (it will fail
#3: go to **user>appdata>local>temp>patcher** again and you will see 2 new folders named PATCHER[some number here; ex: Patcher470]. Look in these for a folder named INSTALLER. Once you find it, double click on:
    PatcherApplication
Voila- ae cs3 will now update to 8.0.2.
    It's as easy as that.

  • FCP and After Effects Windows: best codec?

I still do a lot of FCP7 editing using Apple ProRes codec on my Mac. Since I recently acquired a very fast PC, I plan on using it for work on After Effects. I'll be moving renders from FCP7 to AE and vice-versa. I noticed AE on Windows lacks the ProRes codec.  I've tried rendering in AE using Lossless in both QT and AVI but when importing to FCP there's a very noticeable color difference...
What's my best course of action here?

pretty sure you can get the prores codecs for windows from apple

  • PAL Widescreen format between photoshop and After Effects

Hi, I wonder if someone else has bumped into the problem I have and has a solution. I am working with Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro(all CS3 levels) to create a project using still and moving images. I am using PAL widescreen (16:9) format for the first time so have cropped my still images in Photoshop to 1024 x 576 pixels. Starting a new project in After Effects I chose PAL/Widescreen and set the resolution to 1024x576. When I bring in my images and drop them to the timeline they have the same height as the AE screen but are significantly shorter than the displayed 1024 pixel size. If I drop the images into Premiere they will size to 1024 x 576. Am I doing something drastically wrong here ?

Just to add to this, I am confused over exactly what is happening inside
After Effects with regard to interpreting PAL footage!
When you go to the Compositions Settings dialogue box there are two Presets
on the drop down list for non-square pixels; PAL D1/DV and PAL D1/DV
    Widescreen.
    Both comps are 720 x 576 pixels.
However when you go to the drop down list for Pixel Aspect Ratio the two
options there for non-square pixels are PAL D1/DV (1.09) and PAL D1/DV
    Widescreen (1.46)
    According to my calculations:
    PAL 4:3 in square pixels = 768 x 576 (768 / 4 * 3 = 576)
Doing the maths the Pixel Aspect Ratio rounds up to 1.07 not 1.09
    768 / 720 = 1.06666666667
    PAL 16:9 in square pixels = 1024 x 576 (1024 /16 * 9 = 576)
Again doing the maths the Pixel Aspect Ratio rounds up to 1.42 not 1.46
    1024 / 720 = 1.42222222222
If the Pixel Aspect Ratios given are correct then the Width of both
Compositions should be 704 not 720!
    768 / 704 = 1.0909090909 which rounds up to 1.09
    1024 / 704 = 1.454545454545 which rounds up to 1.46
Using the preset comp Width with the preset Pixel Aspect Ratios doesn't seem
to add up or am I missing something fundamental here?
Perhaps I should just import the footage using whatever Pixel Aspect Ratio
into a PAL comp with square pixels and then just use the fit to comp command
to make sure it really does fit!

  • Fcp and after effects

is after effects compatible with fcp - what programs do you guys use/recomend? ive heard of something called jahshaka? or is this cheap and dodgy?

What do you mean by "compatible?" You can export QT files that you can import into After Effects, and AE can export a QT movie that you can import into FCP. But you cannot import AE projects into FCP like you can with Premiere Pro. MOTION is the application you use with FCP...for Motion Graphics. Or you can use Shake for compositing...but a lot of us use AE with FCP.

  • Question about Workflow between Premiere and After Effects

Hey guys, I have Production Premium CS5 (Premiere and AE)
One thing that has always confused me was basic workflow between these 2 products.  Is it best to get your clips, but them into sequence, do the basic effects that Premiere supports and output into the  highest quality video in order to take into AE and apply effects to?
Or should I take video footage, do my After Effects work, export that as a clip that will then be used in the video composition in Premiere?  I know I don't want to move a project too many times between because of compression, so what would the most optimized workflow be?
FYI, I am doing a lot of video game frag movies, so I have a lot of effects I like to put into it.

    Really?
I'm always amazed at Photoshop's cold boot startup time. On my rig it takes 8 seconds.  From a warm boot, Photoshop will start in 2-4 seconds.
This isn't the case with my video editing software though...
Sony Vegas 8.1 (looking to learn Premiere so I don't need this anymore - Cold Boot : 8 seconds, Warm Boot : 3 seconds)
After Effects (Cold Boot : 22 seconds, Warm Boot : 8 seconds)
Premiere (Cold Boot : 48 seconds, Warm Boot : 16 seconds)
Premiere seems to be a beast of a program; I'm rather surprised, I thought AE would be the more intense one.  Sorry, I haven't yet overcome my fears of losing projects/data because I'm running on a Windows machine.
It's half the reason why I have a Mozy account to backup my files to an online resource.

  • Roundtrip between FCP and Color

Having much trouble doing a round trip from FCP to color. Sent my sequence to color rendered and saved and tried to send back to FCP but the new sequence from color says all the media offline. I made a new sequence and deleted all the effects, etc and sent to color again but the same problem occurs. All the media is offline. Tried exporting the XML file from color and importing directly into FCP but I get this error:

Any ideas on what the problem is? The sequence I sent to color has several multiclips and these seem to be the only media offline when I roundtrip back to FCP.
    Thanks,

The error message you received can be safely ignored.

  • Problems with Dinamic Link between Premiere pro CC and After Effects CC

I'm having serious problems with dinamic link between premiere pro and after effects, really serious problems that have 2 big projects in trouble (a documentary and a video clip) and I had to redo all the work pipeline to the consumer.
The documentary for a spanish TV was made on CC 2014 and a video clip was made on CC. Both of them with a lot of after effects composition in the premiere pro timeline. Render freeze, a lot of playback issues, and many more problems... Until I decided to remove these links between premiere and after effects and render out all the after effects compositions one by one and insert as clips in premiere pro. 1 week working away with back and fourth.
    I've got a huge workstation:
    i7 4990
    32Gb ram
    GTX780 3gb
    256 gb system ssd
    2 Tb project storage
*All my hardware and software are update.
I know that a lot of folks are on the same huge problem and I want to ask everyone:
    How do you save this?
    What is your pipeline?
    Are there any solution?
Best practice to use dinamic link in a huge project?

Unfortunately that specifically did not work.
Based on another comment sent to me, here is what did.
    In PProCC
File > Adobe Dynamic Link > New After Effects Composition
    In AECC
From that composition created from PPro, I imported the project (aep) initially created in AECC from another team member. Saved the file.
    Back in PProCC
File > Adobe Dynamic Link > Import After Effects Composition
    Magic.

  • Updating Final Cut Studio 2.01 and workflow between FCP and AE

Hi. I am currently working in FCE 3.5 and am considering purchasing Final Cut Studio 2.01 (new and sealed) as opposed to the latest version since I am running a PowerPC G5. Am I assured of being able to download all the updates for Final Cut Pro 6 and exactly which version would be the latest and final one? Was there ever an FCP v6.5? I do mainly animation/motion graphics and work in After Effects (along w/ Flash, Carrara, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). I understand that the workflow between FCP (as opposed to FCE) and AE is greatly enhanced. Can someone give me an idea of what advantages this new workflow will offer in terms of what I'll be able to accomplish that I can't do now w/ FCE? Also, any other comments on how FCP (as compared to FCE) will benefit me as an animator will be greatly appreciated. Lastly, am I correct in assuming that I will be able to open my FCE 3.5 project files in FCP 6 but not visa versa? Thanks. Jack.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I see that I will need some 3rd-party support in order to realize the benefit of a Final Cut Pro/After Effects workflow. Have another question. What are the kinds of filters that you can keyframe in FCP but not in FCE? And are there many filters in FCP that are not included w/ FCE? As I deal mainly w/ animation as opposed to footage of live video I am trying to justify the investment in Final Cut Studio 2 in terms of it being a benefit to me as an animator. I currently use FCE 3.5 (which includes versions of SoundTrack and LiveType) and After Effects CS3 plus other graphics programs. I would love to be able to work within DVD Studio Pro as iDVD is so limiting as an authoring program but am not sure how much I will benefit from switching from FCE to FCP. This is what I am trying to nail down.

  • FCPHD and After Effects 6.5:  Where to start?

    Hi there,
Well, now I'm officially in the land of the confused! I've just purchased After Effects, and of course I've only recently just gotten decent in FCPHD...I have some questions which I suppose are for those that are using FCP and After Effects 6.5 Professional, specifically with HD footage (Sony HVRZ1U)...
    1. I can't seem to hear any of my audio when I import my high def clips from FCP into After Effects (unless I double click on the clip in After Effects and it plays the native QT file) It just doesn't work when monitoring the timeline. Yes, I have the audio enabled on the bottom left of the track.
    2. My composition settings in After Effects are confusing me a bit. My footage is 1920 x 1080 if I click "get info" while looking at a clip (FCHD clip, ,already captured from my deck). Somehow I thought it was supposed to be 1440 x 1080...anyway, what should my composition setting be in After Effects to make sure my footage doesn't get stretched, skewed or shrunken?
    3. I'm hoping someone could perhaps give me a proposed workflow in After Effects. Do I do what I need to do in FCP and then use After Effects or toggle between them both? I suppose the answer largely depends on what you're trying to do, but if anyone could share how they use FCPHD and After Effects together I sure would appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance!
    Gman

If you're not familiar with AFX then I strongly suggest you get the Adobe Classroom in a book for AFX and do a crash course in it. AFX is something you can figure out, but it's confusing at the same time.
As for getting footage back and forth, I export as a QT ref (recompress all files is unchecked) and use those files. I then export from AFX in the native format that my FCP project is in (in my case it's DV/DVCAM).
    Workflow varies on the project.
If I have essentially a sequence of video that I'm going to show all together, I'll build that into a sequence in FCP and export the sequence. For other things, I'll import each thing clip by clip.
Automatic duck will save you a lot of time if you can afford it. you basically build the basic feel of your piece in FCP, position, size, speed, sequences, etc, and then it enables you to bring your FCP file right into AFX where you can then do what you need to do for it.
I can't help you in the HD dept, I've only dealt with SD in AFX. Easiest way to get your resoultion right is to drag a clip that you brough in from AFX to the "Create a Composition" icon in the bin area. That'll copy the settings from that clip and turn it into a composition.

  • Bridge and after effects

    Hi!
I'm new to after effects, but not new the adobe programs. I could be considered a "power user" for several of their products.
I'm currently trying to teach myself how to use After Effects with the classroom in a book series. In that teaching series, one of the things they are trying to teach is the integration between bridge and after effects to preview, and then export, effects. However, the integration between these two softwares is proving to be very buggy.
As per the instructions in the book, I'm supposed to be able to preview the text special effects in bridge, and then place them to a selected layer in after effects, but what usually happens is nothing. After several attempts, I came to the conclusion that this part of the software wasn't working. I was able to work around this by going to the effects panel in After effects and dragging and dropping it onto the selected layer. I only use bridge to preview.
Unfortunately, I've hit a technical snafu with loading an animated path. It's not working in the after effects panel, and when I try to export it from bridge as per the books instructions, I get this error message: "After Effects error: Can't import file "Pipes.ffx": unsupported filetype or extension."
Does anyone have an idea as to what's going on? I'm on a mac running mavericks, using the most recent downloads of Affects and Bridge.
    Thanks for your help!
