Router address to make my wireless secure

My wireless has never been secure. I am trying to now make it secure but I can't find the IP address or router address for my Airport Express. I have checked the manual. I have searched the web. Any ideas?

When you say that you are trying to make the wireless secure, are you saying that you need to set up security and a password for the wireless network?
If yes, you need to use the AirPort Utility application for this.
It is already on your Mac, located as follows:
Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utility

  • WRT160N keeps disabling wireless security

    Hello,
I've had a WRT160N v3 for a couple of years, and I've noticed that the wireless security setting is often set to disabled when I go into the configuration, even though I've set to enabled previously.   It goes like this....
I've setup the router to have WPA2 Personal security enabled, with a passphrase.  I have several devices that use wireless that connect to it everyday.  I recently received a new device, so I went into the Linksys configuration to get my passphrase, and the Security is set to disabled.  So, I enable it again, configure a the device, and have no problems.
This has happened many times.  I just happen to be in the router configuration and check the wireless security tab, and it is set to disabled.
My first thought was that maybe there had been a power loss (although, I can't remember the last power outage we had in my area).  However, every other setting was retained, so I can't see why this would be the only one that changes (and it's a rather important setting).  Additionally, I was configuring a blue-ray player last night, trying to see if it was better with a wired setting from another Access Point, and the setting was disabled, so I enabled it again.  I made changes to the BR player, then changed it back to a wireless connection.  I checked the security setting on the Linksys, and AGAIN it was disabled.
I have the latest firmaware installed.
    Does anyone have advice?
    Thanks!

    Hi oook,
I have Ver.3.0.03 Build 3 (the latest).  I had updated it last year when it was released.  I'm not trying to do any port forwarding, though.

So before upgrading the firmware of your router, your computer must have an active Internet connection to download the firmware file. Once the firmware is downloaded, you can proceed with the firmware upgrade even without Internet connection.

  • Router BEFW11S4 v2 Wireless Security Becomes Disabled

Hello: I have a BEFW11S4 router. I recently enabled the wireless security on it. I used WEP with a passphrase. Everything went fine. I was able to connect with the key. The problem is that when I came back later, the wireless security was disabled again. So, I enabled it again. I came back a little later and it was disabled yet again. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

make sure that the router has the latest firmware....if not , upgrade it...after the upgrade, reset and reconfigure the router...

  • I cannot get wireless security setup via Linksys router web page

Help.  I'm trying to reset my router.  I've gottne through everything and all is setup and working but now I cannot setup the wireless security.  I'm go to Wireless>Wireless Security, when trying to choose security mode I can select it, the page refreshes, but just goes back to 'Disabled'.  I can't get pat this, I get nothing.  Is my router fried and it just won't allow me to setup security?  I've tried everything.  I'm on a Mac, but dont believe that should make a difference.  Is there another setting somewhere?  I did change my password and name of the router, but that's all the farther I got.  I've followed all of the steps and get stuck on the page and drop down.  Driving me nuts!

I opened in Firefox and was actually able to choose WPA, the settings opened up and then the page locked up, refresh took me back to 'disabled'.  Reopened in a new window, opened up again, entered the WPA shared key and after spinning for over 5 minutes, lost my connection and had to log in to join my now secure network...finally!!!!!!  Thank you.

  • How do I make my wireless router the "preferred" one?

How do I make my wireless router the "preferred network"?  I have to manually re-select it each time I boot up or when it comes out of standby.  This has only started to occur now that I have a new wireless router.  I want it to automatcially select my router.

Have you restarted your computer?  Repaired permissions and restarted your computer?
    Which os are you using?

Make sure router is up to date. Try ethernet to rule out any wifi issues. Reboot ATV and router.

  • Does Linksys Make a Wireless-N Cable Modem/Router Combo

Does Linksys make a wireless-n gateway router, a combination router and cable modem?
I currently have the combo device for wireless-g but want to upgrade to wireless-n.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think at the moment Linksys does not sell 802.11n gateways.
I generally recommend not to get combo devices but better get two separate devices, one simple modem and a wireless router.
    1. You have a far larger product choice for the router and they are usually cheaper.
    2. If the router dies you can still have internet through the modem directly. If the combo device dies you are offline.
    3. Less functions in a device makes simpler design and in average more stable and reliable devices.
    4. You can replace either device at any point. For instance, if you switch from cable to DSL or FTTH you can simple replace the modem. You may have to change the internet connection setting on the router but other then that you can keep the router. Likewise, if in two years from now you want to get the next-generation wireless router you can keep using your modem (if it is still fit for your internet speed)
    Just some to think about...

  • Best Wireless Security Settings-WRT54G Linksys Router

I've been running into problems attempting to set the wireless security settings for my router and then trying to connect to the internet from my iBook. As long as I enable SSID broadcasting I can find my router but the problem starts when I enable the security settings. The iBook will then ask for the password and nothing I've inserted works??? I'm at a loss. I've given up, those sorts of brickwalls can do a number on your head--major headache this weekend..so I will try again tomorrow. I thought the passphrase is your password--the only thing that I haven't tried (after searching the forums here) is putting the $ in front. Does anyone have this particular router that can give me some suggestions (in basic, simple terms please) that can help me get started on a good security setup so that I won't be scared someone in the neighborhood (as I've read previously) is scanning and can log onto my internet connection. Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Why in heaven would you want WEP to secure your network when you can have WPA which is more secure and doesn't have this kind of problems???
With the right tools (available free on the net) you can crack almost any WEP protected network in less than a day (I have done this with my friends to prove them how weak WEP is).
So imagine you set your WEP protected network, a neighbor crack it and use it, all of this while you CAN'T use your own network.
You should try WPA, good luck...
BTW: I have the same router, with WPA and SSID broadcast disabled.

You have basically verified that the issue is NOT with your MBP, but with this particular Wi-Fi network. Even though it may be unsecured, the provider may have elected to configure it for MAC filtering. In this case I am referring to the MAC (Media Access Control) address and not your Mac laptop itself. If this has been enabled, your Mac would only be able to connect if the Mac's MAC address was added to that filter.

Yes. A Mac or PC can be configured to provide a wireless network if either are equipped with a wireless adapter.

  • Facetime works with wireless security disabled, dropped otherwise

On a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router, configured as an access point.
    Security mode: WPA-Personal
    WPA mode: WPA2 Only
    Cipher type:AES
I tried inserting a 1.3 Mb file, to no avail.
I have an iPad mini with OS 8.1.2
Please let me know if more information is req'd.
To have facetime with my son and grandchildren I have change the security mode to 'none' during the session! Really? If I do not, we have about a one minute session that is dropped.
    Any ideas will be explored!
    Thanks in advance,
    Grandpa Pete

    Three answers:
1-The router is an access point as it is a 'slave' to the wired router. The wired router assigns the ip addresses and is connected to the Comcast-Arris modem.
2-Security mode options: None, WEP, WPA-Personal, WPA-Enterprise and
the password options are Auto (WPA or WPA2), WPA2 Only, WPA only. I chose the WPA2 only as some other place I'd seen something about a problem with the TKIP cipher. I'm a novice, though. What you're suggesting makes sense and I'll try to go to WPA only.
3-I tried inserting a file showing the wireless router setup page, via a screen shot. I can't even insert a half Mb file, for whatever reason. The error page says to keep it to less than 2 Mb.
-As above, the wireless device must be an access point. It's in the living room, where wireless devices are mostly used. The wired router is in one corner of the house, with the main winxp pc.
-I can't make the wireless router security mode WPA2, so I used WPA for everything and see if it works for the next facetime session. All the other wireless devices are now functional.
-I'm not understanding the third option. Is that for my tower, each wireless device?
(No, winxp is not a joke. I use it as my main pc os and have no need to replace it. I'm posting my problem in this forum because we now have an apple product, the mini iPad, and I'd sure like to use it for the facetime with the wireless security setting on during the session. So far, it's REQUIRED to turn the wireless security off to keep the facetime session longer than about 60 seconds.)
Thank you very much for your time! I really appreciate it. As a novice, routers are still mysterious to me, what with all the settings inside of them.
    Grandpa Pete
btw: my question is not solved. Not at all! I still believe I have an unsolved question. I don't know why the green box and checkmarks exist! Did I miss something?

  • Wireless Security

Right now, I have no wireless security. If I were to have one, which setup/system would be the best of the choices offered in Airport utility? I noticed there are a number of networks(due to different names) in my area. How can I make sure, no one else other then my family members can use my network or maybe they can't even though I do not have a security setup? My daughter has been saying her network connection is slow. I have no problems-no slower or faster then usual. She thinks she is connected to another network. Is this possible? I have lowered the range of my network to #10 which is the lowest strength. I want to make sure no other person then members of my family can connect to our little, family network.

Use the strongest password security that you can. This means both choosing WPA2 (if your computers can support it) and a good strong passphrase. Since any decent OS (Mac, Windows or Linux) has something like the Keychain, it's not like you really need a passphrase you can easily remember...you'll never have to type it in (One written copy locked in you fireproof safe with you other important papers might be OK, though). Giving your network a unique name (SSID) doesn't hurt either, since it is used with the passphrase to generate the encryption key for the network. And make sure the router itself is also password protected - no point setting up all that security only to have some neighbour just reconfigure your router when you aren't looking.
Don't use WEP unless you have to (actually, given the choice between using WEP and upgrading my computer, I'd upgrade). It's broken and effectively no different from using no security at all. MAC address filtering and using closed networks similarly have no security benefits. There might be some administrative efficiencies to MAC address filtering, but no security benefits.
Set up WPA2, turn up the power on your router, make sure all the computers that are going to connect are set up with the passphrase (and maybe clear them of any other networks they remember) and you should be good to go.

  • Cant find Wireless Security to set up WPA

On the Linksys web based set up page - mine does not show "Wireless Security" as a sub heading under Wireless, it only shows "Wireless" in "Advanced".  Therefore I cannot set up WPA security. Can anyone help please.

    Hello Lazergirl,
I think you will have to hard reset router and then update firmware of router. Also make sure you disable all firewalls on your computer before accessing setup page.
    Follow this:
Go to www.linksys.com/download and select correct model numbers and version number. Download the firmware and save it on your computer.
Check the file it sould be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file.
Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name.
    Go to administartion tab there
Go to fimware update sub-tab there
Browse for the firmware image file and click update
when update completes turn off modem & router.
After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router.
Now proceed to login and see if you get wireless security sub tab.

  • WRT54GS Wireless security two routers (WDS)

    2 WRT54GS
    Wireless connection between routers.
No1 SSID test (connected to ADSL modem) disabled security
    No2 SSID test1 disabled security
After some hard work I was able to make a wireless connection (50m/150ft) between two WRT54GS routers. But when I enabled security (WPA-TKIP) on the router (test1) that is't connected to the ADSL modem, it could't connect to intenet anymore, only to the secured router (test1).
I would be very happy for some tips how to enable wireless security on both routers.
