Router compatibility with Access Points

I work in IT but am a novice to wireless.
I would like to find out if my Wireless Router is compatible with my Access Points if WAP security is turned on.
My current configuration is a Linksys Wrt54g ver 2.04.4 and 2 Cisco Air-Ap1231G-A-K9 system software version12.3(7)JA2
Right now it is working with the Linksys router serving out DHCP without security. My predecessor did not turn on security.
I did turn on WAP security on Router and the AP's but could not get connected. With 2 laptops I could see the AP's but could not connect to them with the passphrase. On the AP's I used the Express security menu.
My question is, should I upgrade the router? If yes, What would be the best fit to work with the AP1231g's?

That's not exactly what I was referring to... What you describe sounds like you are using the old AirPort base station as a remote location. If I recall correctly, the oldest AirPort base stations could not do this function. I don't recall which model added this function.
You can check using AirPort Utility. First, on the manual setup screens for your AirPort Extreme base station, check under the Wireless tab. For +Wireless Mode+, there should be an option for +Participate in a WDS network+. You don't need to change anything for now.
Now, check the same place on the setup screens for the old AirPort base station. Does it have an option for +Participate in a WDS network+ ? If so, it should work.
Set them both to +Participate in a WDS network+. On the Extreme, go to the WDS tab and set it as +WDS main+. On the old one, set it as +WDS remote+. In your case, make sure the +Allow wireless clients+ option is NOT checked, because you want your Extreme to handle wireless connections.
Plug in your old iMac to the old AirPort base station using an Ethernet cable, and it should be able to connect with the default +Using DHCP+ setting. I used my old AirPort Express this way to connect my TiVo box to the Internet, after my AirPort Extreme took over as the main wireless router.

    Summary: Hi,
We have today one Cisco 5508 and those access point on remote sites
    o CISCO AIR-LAP-1131AG-E-K9
    o CISCO AIR-LAP-1231G-E-K9
    o CISCO AIR-LAP-1142N-E-K9
We plan to use redundancy on the controller and implement Flexconnect on the remote site. What we need to know is if I can implement Flexconnect on all actual access point - I think it is possible on 1142N + 1131G but do not know on 1231AG - is it correct or I'm wrong
We plan to install the latest SW version for 5508 controller.
    Thank you

  • How to configure wrt54g router as an access point when connected to a 3Com switch

I'm trying to use my linksys router as an access point to keep from having to make more network drops. I can't figure out which IP address/gateway to use on my router to get it to communicate with my switch. The 3Com switch address is 10.1.10.250, gateway is 10.1.10.1, netmask is 255,255,255,0.The linksys router has been reset to defaults.
I know that it can be done but I'm having the hardest time making it work.

For the DD-WRT firmware, you can try this link .
For the price of your Acess Point you can try this link .

  • How do I use a Dlink WBR-1310 router as an access point w/WRT54GS Router?

How can I set up my Dlink WBR-1310 router as an access point for the main router which is a Linksys WRT54GS?

I don't mean to be stupid but perhaps I was vague. I want to be able to plug the xbox 360 into the wrtu54g-tm using it as only a way to communicate wirelessly to my wrtg54G which is plugged into my modem. Are you saying that this can't work unless I try to use DD-wrt or something like that?

  • Setting wireless router as an access point

I'm trying to set up a wireless router as an access point for a wired router. The wired portion of the network is fine and the internet connection is working.  The laptop sees the wireless router and can log in to it.  However, the wireless router does not receive an internet connection and cannot "see" the wired portion of the network. I cannot log into the wireless router from one of the wired computers.
Below are the settings I'm using:
    Wired router--Linksys BEFSR41v3
     Obtain ID Automatically
     192.168.0.1
     255.255.255.0
     Local DHCP enabled
     Start # 192.168.0.100
     RIP Disabled
     UPnP off
    Wirless router--Linksys WRT54GS
     Automatic Conifguration DHCP
     192.168.0.2
     255.255.255.0
     DHCP Server off
     Firewall/NAT off
     UPnP off
Set to Router function (rather than Gateway)
I have had to set the laptop to a static IP, since it keeps revereting to a default IP.  It is set to 192.168.0.102, 255.255.255.0, Gateway=192.168.0.1, DNS=192.168.0.1
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As you have Disabled the DHCP Server on the Router and the Changed the IP on the Router to 192.168.0.2. the only thing remaining is the Connection part that is you need the Connect the BEFSR41 router from the Number one port to the Number one of WRT54GS that should Work. Please remove the Static IP Address from the Computers.

    A bug in common WAP4410N and WRVS4400Nv2
I will call this a functional bug
The connection control should have an input box with buttons for Add || Edit || Delete and you should enter the MAC Address in and click add and this should populate a read only textarea so you are NOT limited to just 20 client computers. Basically this should work like the Setup_lan.htm in WRVS4400Nv2 Static IP Mapping but instead of doing mapping just add/subtract/edit Mac addresses and you can fit a lot more than 20.
This is a Major limitation considering I paid pretty good money for this router and access point, I should have vertually limited clients
So back to the Setup_lan.htm in WRVS4400Nv2 static IP mapping......I LOVE this feature and the way it was implemented.....NICE JOB GUYS

  • Roaming between RV220W wireless router and WAP121 Access Point

Hello, I have recently purchased a RV220W wireless router and a WAP121 access point and i would like to allow my users to "roam" between the two networks as needed (so when the user is closer to whichever one they connect to that one since it has a better signal). For the most part I only have experience in cisco IOS and in actual routers not the wireless stuff so my knowledge has not exactly transfered over well.

    William,
WDS will not work between the RV220W and WAP121 due to incompatible chipsets. The RV220W can be repeated using WDS by another RV220W or RV180W only. You will need to plug the WAP121 into the RV220W or try WorkGroup Bridge mode to repeat the signal.
Regarding roaming, the router or AP are not aware of each other and do not have the capability to disconnect a client and help them connect to the AP with the stronger signal. The client will switch to the stronger AP only when the original signal is lost.
The Aironet (enterprise) devices have the ability to utilize a wireless LAN controller which can help keep devices connected to the stronger signal and allow truly seamless roaming between APs.

  • Static Routing vs. Access Point

I need helping in setting up my media center. I have the Dlink 520 in wireless mode. I have the linksys WRT300N. And I'd like to set up a static route to my wired network's resources. This device is hardcoded with 192.168.1.X and I need a static route to the 192.168.0.X network. Is there a way to do so, so that my media server will be seen by the server on that network.  Please help..  I've looked at port forwarding and DMZ and they all have a hardcoded 192.168.1.X.  Should I just set this device up as a access point,  even though I have other wireless devices that benefit from DHCP.   Please advise.
    Thank you
    Mr V.

If you connect the WRT in gateway mode through its internet port to the dlink, you don't have to define any static route on the WRT. The LAN behind the WRT is inaccessible then unless you define port forwardings on the WRT.
If you connect the WRT in router mode through its internet port to the netgear you also don't have to define a static route on the WRT. You must define a static route for the WRT subnet on the dlink. The WRT will just work correctly as it is. You may also have to define a static route on the dlink to forward packets for the WRT subnet to the WRT instead of the netgear.
If you setup the WRT as I have suggested you don't need static routes on the WRT either because the internet port is not used and thus there is no routing on the WRT.
So, whatever you want to do I cannot see any reason in your setup why you think you would have to set a static route on the WRT. You only need routing if the packets have to go one more hop. But the WRT has only two sides and those two sides are your complete LAN. There is nothing else there...
You cannot define a static route for the traffic from inside the WRT LAN to the outside simply because this is implicitly defined with the configuration of the internet and LAN interfaces.
I don't have another suggestion. I think I have listed the major reason why it is beneficial to set up the WRT as access point, mostly because you'll only have a single LAN subnet instead of two. Two subnets complicate many things. One of those things is file sharing across the router which may be related to your problems.
I suggest you try to set it up as I have suggested and we see how it goes...

  • Intermittent problem with access point (WAP321)

We hane an intermittent problem with our Wifi access point WAP321. Suddenly, all clients are unable to access Internet, server and local network. The signal is 100%. The message is no internet connection or limited connection (on all device, Iphone, computer, etc.). When I check to Ip configuration, the ip adress have change for loca 169.x.x.x. The only way to resolve is to reboot the access point. (POE).
It seem that access point don't relay information to rest of network. Strange.
The access point is connected to a simple unmanaged switch. This switch is connect to router and server. The serveur (Win2008) is the DHCP Server and DNS Server.
Can you help me to find a solution. ?

  • Problem with Access Point app

Yesterday I experienced a problem with my internet sharing where it wouldn't start and gave me an error: Connection not shared, Internet sharing isn't currently available
. I ran across an article on wpcentral.com where they suggested installing the Access Point app from this thread:
    http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/Nokia-Windows-Phone-8-App-Updates/td-p/1640082
Now I've done that and I see 3 profiles in the app, only 2 are LTE. Activating either of those LTE profiles now gets me an error when trying to internet share that looks like this: Connection not shared, To enable tethering on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611. When I use the 3g access point profile I get the same message I was getting yesterday.
At this point I don't think this app is doing anything for me. I dont' use multiple sims, I'm not a world traveller. I also don't know which profile I should be on. I'm clearly in over my head and would like to just take a step back. However, I can't see a way to uninstall the app as it's now in settings. How do I get myself back to where I was yesterday?
And for bonus points, does anybody know what the original error I was getting means?
    Thanks,
    Joel

    Hi Adrian,
Yes, I've tried a soft reset to no avail. I've gone to both the AT&T store and the Microsoft store and neither of them have any thoughts on what's going on. At this point I think I will need to replace the hardware since I've not found a solution from anyone.
    Thanks for you help.

  • Using router as wireless access point

I have connected two routers to my BT broadband Hub (via ethernet) in order to create one big Wirless LAN across the house. Unfortunately, the routers have simply created independent wireless lans which I need to log into separately as I move around the house. Any idea how I edit the routers so that they all use the same user ID and Password....and effectively act as one integrated wireless network, so that i can connect to them as I move between them seamlessly. Thanks.....

  • N73 problem with access point.

I have 3 APN : orange mms, orange wap and orange internet. I deleted the orange internet apn (from tools settings connections) and set the phone browser to use the orange wap apn. My problem is that periodically the Orage Internet apn appears again in the list and the browser automaticaly switches to that one. The browser does not have any option to ask on connection. In the last 2 days I browsed 20 mb on the internet without knowing that it is internet not wap and this will cost me 25 $.
This is the most stupid thing I've ever seen, the phone lets you change your settings but it does what it wants (stupid factory settings).
    Any ideas/ solutions?

Is your phone locked to the Orange network or did you buy it SIM free? Seems like typical behaviour for a phone with firmware designed for Orange.

  • Can I use an old actiontec router as an access point in another room?

Hey folks, sorry to create another post but  I need some help and I didn't know where else to go.
Okay so I have my old actiontec GT704-WG router lying around from when I used to have regular high speed internet. I was wondering if I could hook that up in the top floor and be able to have my wifi devices (iphone, ps3, laptop, etc...) connect to that, instead of the fios router all the way in the basement. Of course, I would want it to connect to the same network as it would if I connected directly to fios router. But I wanna know if this is possible?
If it is possible, what would I have to do in order for my wifi devices to connect to it?
    Thanks!

You would have to connect it via an ethernet cable, lan port to lan port, as I don't believe it's possible to connect it wirelessly.
To connect wirelessly you would need a wireless bridge.  You could get an old Linksys wrt54g router that supports DD-WRT and flash the firmware on that to convert it into a wireless bridge
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
however I believe you would not be able to connect wirelessly to the linksys as it's now running as a bridge.

  • How to use Home Hub 3 as a 2nd router(access point...

Hi guys hope you can help; I am trying to add my Home Hub 3 as a 2nd router (ie an access point) to my home network and struggling.
What am I trying to achieve.
I have a fully functioning home network which is working great but the wireless range does not extend to the room above my garage, some distance away from the main house. I currently service it with an Ethernet link from my E4200 router, via the mains wiring, to link to a PS3 there. But I want to extend this to have a wireless network in the remote room so I can link multiple devices - rather than spend more money, deploying a 2nd router which I already have  is preferable.
    What have I got.
I have a Linksys E4200 router (nice piece of kit) attached to my ADSL line via a Belkin N1 wireless modem-router set to  “modem only” mode (I was using a DSL modem until yesterday but that went AWOL and digging out the Belkin router I saw that it had a modem only function – and it/they worked first time )
All of my gear in the house is attached wirelessly to the E4200 which is delivering circa 11.5mbps from a maximum of 12.5mbps for the line measured by BT onsite. So  all is  fine there.
What have I done to try and use the HH3
Linked an Ethernet cable between one of the Ethernet ports on the E4200 to a mains plug.
Linked an Ethernet cable from a mains plug to one of the Ethernet ports on the HH3 router.
Ie as the PS3 was linked.
    3.  Switched on the HH3 router: the power light is solid blue, the wireless light is solid blue, the broadband light is off
    4. Connected my laptop to the HH3 network and loading up a web page on IE9 displays a web page from bthomehub.home/etc etc with title BT Home Hub and a message “Can’t connect to Broadband”. It is the start of a self- diagnostic routine. Answering all the questions I eventually get a Home Hub Administrative Home Page displayed.
Is there a quicker way of getting to this admin page??
    5.  I switched off DHCP
I changed the IP address from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.1.200 as this seems to be what the other threads on this subject did.
When I went to apply the change a message came up telling me that I might not be able to access the HH3. I ploughed on disregarding this and needless to say I could not then access the HH3 via the web interface and trying to access a web site nothing happened.
    6.  I did a hardware reset on the HH3
    7. Going through the motions again, when I got to the admin pages again, I switched off DHCP and this time left the IP address alone, ie 192.168.1.254.
When I went to apply this  I got the message
“After changing these settings you will need to renew the IP address of all devices connecting to your BT Home Hub. Please follow the instructions provided with your devices.”
I applied the change – but have not yet done any fooling around with IP addresses on my laptop because I don’t want to start mucking around with my laptop
I then tried to access a website, and failed, but on this occasion rather than nothing happening, the Home Hub website came up  again displaying the error message page.
And that is where I stand. All looks so easy when reading other threads on this and other forums but it is not working for me.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
The IP settings on the E4200 are
    IP  192.168.1.1
    Range  192.168.1.100  to 192.168.1.149
Also connection type on the E4200 is POE not POA – as far as I  recall that is what it needed to be to connect to the DSL modem and work.

    Thanks for the speedy reply!
I have actually came across this page before - I seem to hit a snag when I connect the repeater hub (my HH3).  As outlined, I have at all times kept the repeater hub connected via ehternet into one of the regular LAN ports to my main HH5.
But when I connect my laptop to the repeat hub (HH3), I am actually connected to the internet somehow (I assuem using the HH5 network) but under my network connections it says I am connected to the HH3.  As a result, when I go to the homehub settings page 192.168.1.254, it brings me to the main HH5 settings page and not the repeater HH3.
According to the instructions it says I should "Ignore the not connected page", but I am connected and I cant seem to alter any of the settings on my HH3 while it is connected to the HH5.
    Any other pointers?
    Thanks!
