Router Died?

I have a WRTP54G that I use with Vonage. Router is @5 months old. For the second time, I have experienced router failure. Nothing else on the same connection has failed; internet connectivity still working. I have rebooted and reset router with no luck. On reset, modem web administration appears to be working but wireless is intermittent and often when trying to save configuration changes, the router will save will fail and I will get a 404 error or a internal communication error...quiting.
I do not appear to be able to get the router to resume operation. Has anyone experienced similar issues - anyone have a resolution?

Thanks for the various messages. Reset did not work and firmware was current. Vonage is replacing faulty equipment. Anyone who has a problem wth similar equipment should call Vonage immediately Thanks

  • Losing Access - Is my Router Dying?

My router and modem start out fine in the morning. Can utilize VPN connect and internet access. Sporadically during the day. My connections are fine, but webpages cannot be displayed? I have to unplug the router then replug the power back. I connect back to my network and all is fine. Does this mean my router is dying? I have already replaced the modem and there are no service problems.

Your router is probably not dying - the firmware probably needs a little 'resuscitation' in the form of a firmware update to the most current version
You don't give much detail as far as your router's model #, or Operating Sysyem and type of ISP you are using - if you need to check back -- supply as much detail as possible
In the mean time compare your routers firmware version with the most recent version and upgrade it if you have an older version installed - check here - http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support

  • PIX 506E routes died

    Hello experts...
I've had a set of PIX 506E boxes holding an IPSEC tunnel for a good year or so without a hitch. Today, the tunnel dropped and I lost access to the remote site. The local PIX can only ping devices on the local [inside] subnet and all nodes on all my other subnets can't find a route to the PIX. On the local gateway, I can ping the PIX, but can't traceroute to it. I also ran an ICMP debug and could see when remote nodes ping, but the reply doesn't leave the box.
Nothing has changed, routes all look good, i've reset everything -- no luck at all. Any idea what may be happening? I have a feeling it's a basic issue that looks more complex that it is, but i'm stumped at this point.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jad

  • WRT54GS v5.1 Download issues (web access is fine) - is my router dying??

Been having intermittant problems with this router for some time, usually a reboot will suffice. Web access will last all day long, but the second I start a download I pretty much always instantly lose my connection, and the computer will not recognise the router even after turning it off. I have to reboot the pc and the router and then things are fine again, until I try to download again.
I think my problems started when upgrading my virgin broadband to 10mb, although like I say it first it was brilliant and I could download at line speed (or at the restricted rate with virgin) for hours on end.
Is there any settings on the router which will help? I have tried capping speeds on my download manager but I still get dropout.
Is there a newer firmware? Am using
     Firmware Version: v1.50.9, Sep. 14, 2006
Which the linksys homepage says is the most recent update for v5.1
Am all out of ideas, I have variously thought it was interferance from my wii or my ps3, or even from a windows program like skype.
Virgin are giving away routers if I upgrade my connection, if this is the likely cause I would consider doing this. after all the router is quite old now and isn't really fulfilling my meda streaming needs (PC >> PS3) either. Or rather - it drops those connections too.
Why haven't linksys given more support to this router, no firmware upgrade for 30 months is shocking IMO
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help
    JB

Well Version 5 Firmware will not work with your router, The firmware version which is available on the linksys website is an old firmware, but still you need to re-flash the firmware on your router, as your router is dropping its connectivity and you are facing the problem while downloading. So you need to download the firmware for 5.1 and once you download it and Upgrade the firmware of your router, you need to Press and hold the reset button for 60 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 60 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router..

  • Is my router dying?

    Hi,
I've been encountering some strange and serious issues with my linksys WRT54G2. We have 3 computers on our network and out of nowhere we have been having worlds of trouble. I know it is a router issue because when plugging the ethernet cable from the modem into a computer, everything is fine.
The wireless connection drops frequently on all of our computers. When it works it tends to be slow or hung up. Often times when I click a link it will immediately say "Cannot load page" but if I keep hitting refresh many times sometimes it goes through. Other times it loads pages partially or freezes. Sometimes, certain pages won't ping or load at all, but others will. It's been very inconsistent and difficult to determine any single problem that could be causing all of this chaos.
I've been using Network Magic to kind of trouble shoot, but it can only go so far.
    Here's what I've done/tried:
    -Soft Resets, Hard-Resets, factory defaults.
-Upgraded Firmware to the latest one from the linksys website then re-installed and re setup router.
    - Tried changing the different security types, even no encryption/password, tried different channels as well.
I personally have a USB linksys adapter, the other computers have the integrated laptop cards. The router is only 4-5 months old at best.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the input. I'm running out of options here.
    Thanks for the help,
    Mark

    1. What modem is it exactly?
    2. If you see the same or some of the same problems while directly connected to your modem I doubt the router is the source of that traffic.
    3. Check the LEDs on the computer, modem, router, etc. The port LEDs blink if there is activity. If you don't do anything on a computer there should be no or very little activity. If it start blinking like crazy and over a longer period then there must be something on that computer being very busy. If you usually use wireless disable the wireless in the computer and use an ethernet cable to connect. Then you better see the network activity on the LEDs.
    4. Check the network statistics. Windows shows you some packet/byte counts on the network connection. If you find extremely high numbers there it may suggest that there is something transmitting a lot. Also check the network tab of the Task Manager to monitor the network activity. However, please note that malware on the computer may manipulate the data and it may not show anything at all although there is activity in the background.
    5. If your ISPs disables your modem/internet connection they should be able to give you exact times when the incident happened which lead to this. This may help to correlate with your activity.
    6. Regarding the router, if it is has no wireless security or WEP security or a weak WPA passphrase it may be cracked by someone close by. You have to use WPA2 Personal with AES encryption with a very good, strong passphrase for a secure wireless network.
    7. You can never reliably scan an infected machine with programs running on that machine. Once malware takes control of your computer it has also control of any software you run on your computer including AV or malware scanner. Thus, the only real way to get relevent AV/malware scan results would be to run the scan from a 100% clean system (e.g. a boot CD with scanner). And even then it may be some newer malware which is not recognized by any scanner, yet. Only quickly spreading malware will make it quickly into the scanner signatures.

  • Win 7 and E3000 router

I have just bought an E3000 router when my old router died last week.  I am having two problems:
    1.  The data rate slows down after a period of time (long message trail elsewhere)
    2.  I cannot see everything on the network.
I have several Win 7 computers, two win xp computers,  three NAS devices (linux based), and a printer sitting on the network, along with two switches to cope with all the traffic (not to mention iPods, iphones etc.)
With my old router, I couold see everything plugged into the network from my main Win 7 computer. (note:  the win 7 network map does not always work, but the windows explorer window of the network always showed everything).
With the E3000 router, I can only see 1 or 2 of the devices on the network.  If I reboot the router, then sometimes all of the devices appear on the windows explorer window (sometimes not)
I am running a workgroup (not a domain) and i am not using win 7's homegroup because that will not help with the non-win 7 devices.
Is there a setting that will help me to see all of the devices in Win 7 (either on the router or on the computers). I suspect it is a router issue as it worked with my old Zyxel router.

    Dudztgp:
Sorry the colors of the link didn't show up well and I missed it.
My issue is that the computers cannot see each other in windows explorer.  Most are wired connections and if you go to windows explorer and look at network you only see yourself most of the time - not the other computers or the NASes.  This makes sharing files difficult when you cannot see them.
I have central files sitting on the various NAS devices and i cannot see them in explorer. The Cisco Connect says everything is connected.
Everything that should have internet access does, the issue is this side of the router.  It is almost as if the message that a computer is on the network is not being sent to the other computers - like the router is blocking it.  As I said before, the old router did not have this issue.
    thanks

  • Change router address?

Our SMC router died today at work. I replaced it with a new Airport Extreme. Now all the Windows computers here are looking for a specific router address. Rather then change them all, I would like to just change the router address to match that of the previous. Cant seem to figure out how to change the address. I can see the address, but cant make any changes to it. Is this not an option? Or what am I missing here?

My guess would be that the 64.230.197.40 address is the WAN side IP address that you are receiving from your service provider.
The 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.1.1 is the local area network address. Depending on which range you choose, devices connected to the AirPort Extreme will receive IP addresses as follows 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, etc. Or if you are using 10.0.1.1 as the router address, then it would go 10.0.1.2, 10.0.1.3, etc.
I think your devices should be pointed to either 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.1.1.
If you open AirPort Utility and click on your AirPort Extreme, to the right you will see some information about the device. The IP address of the device on your local network will be displayed there. If you haven't changed the DHCP ranges, the IP address will be 10.0.1.1.

  • Best non-Airport Wireless Router

    Hi folks.
Have a need for a brand new wireless router for an iPod 3, MacBook Air, and a potential iPhone 6 or maybe a 5C.  Airport is $99, and she's cheap, so I'm looking for some great alternatives.  Over the years I've had good and bad versions, and I'm soliciting experience from others for recommendations on other makes/models.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

After the death of my AirPort about 18 months ago I decided on a NetGear dual band router which was about $70 less expensive than the Airport Exteme and since I'm a tech there was no reason not to. This is the router recommended as second best at the shop where I work part time. The first thing I was reminded of after my purchase is how 'fun' it is to configure third party routers. It took me three attempts to get it all configured the way I wanted and each reboot of the router took nearly 5 minutes. I'll not regale you with the hardware/firmware issues I dealt with over the next year, it was most un-Apple like. When the router died just outside of the warranty period I paid for the AEBS and frankly I wish I hadn't tried to save the $70. The fact that Apple updates the AEBS firmware and lets the user know in and of itself makes the extra $$$ worth it.

  • WIFI ePrint B110a not working after new modem router

I have had an ePrint  Photosmart B110a for over a year. It has worked great.
However recently our wifi modem router died, and we had to get a new one. It is a Dlink DSL 2875 AL.
I have set up the router and connected the printer to it via WIFI.
Now here is the problem. Immediately after I connect it, the printer works for about 15 seconds.
In other words, I reconnect the WIFI on the printer to the WIFI network, then if I immediately try to print something on my iPhone via WIFI, it will work.
However within less than 30 seconds if I try to print something else, it will say "printer is offline" and then won't show the printer at all in the iPhone "select printer" options menu.
I've spent hours on trying to solve this situation, I want to print over WIFI and it used to work great.
Could the modem be faulty? Could the printer be faulty? Is it a setting?
    How do I fix this?
    Please help.

    Hello Tommotom,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you are having issues with the B110a and your iPhone when trying to print since changing your modem / router. I don't think there is an issue with the printer, iPhone or router, some settings may just need to be adjusted.
I see that the new router is a dual band router. You want to make sure that the printer and iPhone are connecting to only the 2.4 Ghz portion of the router. The printer will only work with 2.4 Ghz, the iPhone on the other hand, can connect to either.
Apple devices pick up the printer signal via the Bonjour protocol, I have worked with routers in the past that will not constantly broadcast the Bonjour protocol, this would cause your described issue too. To check the router, use this App on the phone, suggested by Shirlzz1: Help Determine if your router can support AirPrint with the Bonjour Discovery App.
Lastly, for now, check to ensure that the ports on the router are all open to allow full printing ability, this post will show you the ports: Check the Anti-Virus for Blocked Ports and Timed Scans.
I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • 3560x dying

    Hi everyone.
We just got many 3560x switches for a project. Curiously and in a very rate event (at least for me ) 4 of them died after workijg normally. 3 for some days and the last one for 3 weeks.
Power supplies are ok and light up, they work on other switches, fans dont start kn the damagdd switch but work in ither switches.
Syslog server doesnt show anything. It just goes puff.
Anyone ever experienced this? They are brand new switches biught one month ago from official channek distributor.
Sent from Cisco Technical Support Android App (its cool)

    Hi,
Something similar happened to me with 3921 routers where one after another would just die and not power on after 2-3 months.  TAC didn't know what caused the issue and had me RMA the dead routers (four of them within two months).  After the 2nd router died, I had my reseller look into it and by using their contacts in Cisco, they found out that there was a batch of faulty hardware affecting all of the routers we had purchased.
Once I had the information from the reseller to give to TAC, everything went very smooth and the routers were replaced before they died.
So I suggest having your reseller look into things and maybe turn something up that end users can't find.

  • Wired network router

I have a house that is wired with CAT5 ethernet cables and has desktops connected to some of the cables.  The cables all terminate in a box in the basement.  For the past 16  years the cable modem connected to a Linksys router for a wired network which in turn connected to a network switch.  Wifi was provided by an access point at the end of one of the runs of CAT5 ethernet cabling. This setup worked just great. After 15 years, the Linksys router died. (No shame there on Linksys. 16 years is a decent working life.)  Now I need to find a new wired router for a home network.  (It is pointless installing a wireless router in the basement.)  The initial purchase, because it seemed simple, was a Trendnet $20 cable/modem router.  (This was the only home wired router that I could find.) For whatever reason, this router is not compatible with the dynamic IP addresses that the cable modem has.  Consequently, the router is set to a fixed IP address and I need to reprogram the router every time Comcast switches the IP address on my modem. After having Trendnet customer service show me how to this twice, I may have figured out how to do this on my own. Clearly an unacceptable situation. I am looking for a recommendation for a new wired router. Anyone have experience with a wired network router in a home setting or even in the small business setting that was not too hard to set up and that they would recommend? When asked, Comcast had no suggestions.  I know the home wired router market is a dying market.  I am not interested in putting in a wifi router where the wifi is useless because of the basement location.  The cable modem is a relatively new DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola SurfBoard modem.  Should I replace this with a cable modem/router combination equipment? Should I just get a static IP address from Comcast?  Anyone know what that would cost?

Most routers, even if it has wireles capability, have at least 4 LAN ports for hard wire connections.  If 4 is not enough, then also get a simple switch box to provide additional ports.Once it is set up, then disable the WIFI in the router.

  • Router is fried; will my initial plan still work??

We have an XP box, MacbookPro and PC laptop. All connected via Cat 5 to Linksys router at headend in basement, which connects to cable modem there. One HP LaserJet is connected directly to the XP box.
I had planned this week to buy APExpress so we could use the laptops wherever in the house (and use the printer also)
The router died today. To keep my husband's home-based business going, I plugged his XP box directly into the cable modem.
If I keep that the way it is, do I even have to buy another router? Or could the AP Express function without it and provide Internet/networking/printer to the laptops as in the plan before the router died?

Update: Bought the Extreme, took a deep breath and plugged everything in and wow. Almost no hiccups at all. The XP box connected via Ethernet is faster than we've ever seen it. My MBP connected flawlessly. The only issue was with the PC laptop (also running XP). The Airport Utility loaded fine, but could not see "an Apple wireless device." I tried a bunch of things, none of them successful, and finally out of exasperation tried to find the Extreme using Windoze' Networks Neighborhood, and voila, I was in. At that point, the Airport Utility woke up and said "doh, I see it too!" and everything was ducky.
I've seen all the anguish about frequent drops offline and the need to restart Extreme, etc.... I experienced that once last night with the MBP after I had walked away for 10 minutes ("you are not connected to the Internet," and I had to open diagnostics and click on the network for it to reconnect) but it has not happened at all with the PC laptop, and the MBP has operated flawlessly all day today. If that's as bad as it gets, I will be one happy camper.
    Thanks to everyone.

  • New router, trying to setup AX again

Last router died, so with my new one I have a new key for the AX to use. So, I have the AX plugged in and attached via network cable to laptop in order to modify settings (at least that's what I understand needs to be done in order to change the settings). However, when I scan, I cannot find the AX via the airport utility. I only get the blinking amber light. I've unplugged and replugged it in. I've held in the reset button until the light blinked quickly. I've held in the reset button while plugging it in (seems like I remember that from a while ago). No matter what, not able to get the AX discovered to update settings.

really, no one?? Have I tried all the steps necessary to connect it to the laptop to modify the settings??

  • Time Capsule does not play nicely with Cisco Router

Three days ago, I had an older Linksys router attached to our ISP's cable modem by ethernet; the network included a wireless time capsule and apple express base station set up by our son last year (who understands this stuff, but lives 2,000 miles distant).  The router died and I purchased a new Linksys router (E2500).  It is occupying the same spot as the old router, but running with no security settings as yet.  My wife's iMac and two Windows XP laptops work just fine on the network, as well as our NetFlix connection on our TV.  My MacPro, however, can not access the main network - it can see it but won't grab an IP address.  It will, however, see and connect to the router's guest account, although with reduced signal strength.  The Time Capsule is now connected to the MacPro by ethernet (if I make it wireless, it will back up fine, but I can't access Internet or send email on the guest account).  The AirPort Express is unplugged and not a factor.
Yesterday, I spent most of the day on the phone with Cisco (who claimed AirPort Express will not work with their routers, which I know to be, um, less than accurate), and with Apple Support - who did not help (other than to set up a Genius Bar appointment this morning at the local Apple Store).  The Genius Bar turned out to be a disappointment as well - the MacPro with Time Capsule attached worked perfectly on the main network in the store, but at home, even with a test user account with Admin authority, as they suggested), no go.
If I unpower Time Capsule, I loose Internet.  With Time Capsule plugged in, I can access my router's guest account -
Aside from returning this router and starting fresh with a different brand router, any suggestions?
Thanks for any guidance, suggestions, etc.

My first reaction is to suggest you ring your son.. !!
And I guess my second one, would be to remove the E2500, and connect the time capsule directly to the cable modem.. they are equivalent devices. The TC is an excellent wireless router and will work better as the primary router in your network. Turn off the cable modem so it can pick up the new device.. plug the TC directly to the cable modem then turn on both.
Make sure the TC is working as router.. and you should be able to setup the wireless to connect all your computers etc.
The E2500 can also be used as a WAP if you need more range. But be aware you have to make sure it uses a separate channel to the TC. Plug it in via ethernet to LAN port not WAN.. and turn off dhcp and set the IP to same IP range as the TC but make it outside the dhcp scope. So for example the TC is running 10.0.1.1 and then make the E2500 10.0.1.254
The express cannot do WDS to the Linksys.. so what you were told is correct. It may be able to connect via ethernet but not as repeater. But you can do that with the TC now that it is the main router.
