Router MI424WR - Device Names to MAC Addresses Question

I have Verizon FiOS with an ActionTec MI424WR Router. I have many devices connected to it on our home network: ipods, ipads, nook, kindles, laptop, roku, and a desktop.
For each device, I found its MAC address. Then I logged into the router and went to "My Network." There, I renamed each device (for example, from "android-alsdfjl3kljasdf" to "JonKindle" and "new-host-4" to "MaryIpad"). That way, I'll be able to go to the parental controls rules screen and assign each device to rules as I like.
Problem:
The names keep changing back to "android-alsdfjl3kljasdf" and "new-host-4". Not only that, but somehow, the MAC addresses keep changing. Is there a way to keep that from happening?
I thought MAC addresses were assigned to a piece of hardward and didn't change. Can someone please enlighten me?
Thanks,
smy

The trick to make the [name, MAC address] permanent is to assign a static DHCP lease to each device.  Otherwise, when the lease expires and the device is no longer active, the router forgets everything about it.
As for changing MAC address, you are correct, they shouldn't change.
If you have multiple "Android-xxx" devices they may be coming up in a different order, thus creating the appearance of changing addresses.  Make a list of every active MAC address and attempt to correlate it to your devices.  The next time you think one changed, look and see if it's on your list.
MAC addresses can be changed by the user on some devices, however this is typically only done to "play" with a network or circumvent security features.
Good Luck.

  • My router doesn't accept my MAC address

    Hi.
I'm trying to set static IPs on my router (Netgear DGN 2000). I go to the "Connected devices" panel, and among them I can see my iMac. Its MAC address is odd ( like c4:2c:xx:xx:xx:xx). As I try to set a static IP, I get an error saying "Invalid MAC address". My other non-Apple devices all have MAC addresses starting with 00:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx and I can assign a static IP to them. Ihave the same problem with my MacBook.
Is there something wrong with the iMac? Or the router? Or both ?

I'm glad to hear that, Thanks
But I checked and there is no update for my router... Maybe I'll write to Netgear support, I would rather not buy a new router just to fix this problem!

  • What good is it to have a router that doesn't block mac addresses like its supposed too!!!

what good is it to have a router that doesn't block mac addresses like its supposed too!!!

At 10:30pm I think I'd like to talk this out....Lemme give you some more details and lets get some hardware programmers involved. I think this is a cross-platform conflict or at the remote a outdated hardware problem. What do you need from me to track this issue down? I have been patient and have waited over 1yr or maybe 2, waiting for an update to correct this issue. Alas, there has been no solution to this problem. I have 13 seperate MAC addy's on the network. 1 wired and the the rest wireless(some constant, others random). All on a schedule(some timed access, some all the time). I have macBooks, Labtops, Desktops, Ipads, Ipods, DSIs, Windows7, WindowsXP Pro, PS3, AppleTV and a few random BlueTooths. Not that much.
Anyways, I think somehow there is a hole because of cross-platfom compatability that is making my daughter able to get on the net unless I change the wireless password......
No I have no proof...It's just a feeling

  • How to Implementing ise 1.2 authentication user name against mac address

    Hi all,
My organization wants to authenticate medical devices with certificate.
What I'm trying to do is on the certificate the name of the user will be his mac address,
And the ise policy will be if the user name equal to mac address than he authenticate.
    Until now I didn’t succeed.
    Is it possible?
    Lee.

It sounds like you are trying to do two different things.
The certificate can be done through 802.1x using peap   I dont know if your devices can handle dot1x so if not they can use MAB.  Far less secure but if its a low level device like a printer that has limited input capability then you are stuck with MAB.
What you could do with MAB is use the OUI and some other identifying information (if available) like device host names (This can be derived from DHCP i believe) and possibly av pairs (RADIUS) to help profile the devices.  These can be put into a custom endpoint profile that is given a specific authorization rule.
The whole point is to try to isolate certain types of equipment so that only they get the custom authz rule
Does this make sense?  Im shooting a little blind here without more info.

  • NAM shows MAC address instead of IP address in host

    Hi,
Product: Cisco Prime NAM Appliance 2304
    Version: 5.1(3)
Problem: We only can see MAC address on Hosts table in NAM, not IP address.
Does anyone know what happen and how to fix it?
    Thanks!!!

I wouldn't worry too much about the address shown in the Remote Management tab.  The ARDAgent process, which is what is listening on his computer for connections from Remote Desktop, binds to all active network interfaces and ultimately that's all that matters. Of out curiosity though, to what IP address does the "unknown-b8-8d-##-##-##-##.home" dns name resolve?  Is it the WAN address?  I can't imagine it resolves to a private address like a 192.168.
In any event, let's focus back on the network structure. Does the BT router have both a hard wired LAN ethernet port as well as a WiFi radio for LAN connections?  My guess is yes. I am also assuming that he does *not* have another router attached to the BT LAN ethernet port like an Airport basestation that is serving the WiFi connections.  Typically, the LAN ethernet port is given, via DHCP, a real Internet accessible address but the addresses served via DHCP for wireless clients are private network addresses only.  It's seems unlikely to me that the router is automatically forwarding incoming connections to a private network address on the WiFi network.  But if he plugs his Mac in to the ethenert LAN port on the BT router then you should be able to connect directly to the address given to it via DHCP because it *should* be a real Internet accessible address.

  • Looking for my computer name and mac address.  Where do i find them?

I think this should be straightforward.  Where would I find my Mac Address and name of my computer?  I want to tether with my phone and need to give my phone this info.
    Thanks in Advance.

Your Computer Name is found in the Sharing preferences at the top. For your MAC address open Network preferences, select your desired port such as Wireless then click on the Advanced button. Click on the Hardware tab. You will find it there.

  • Hyper-V Failover Clustering MAC Address Question

    Hello,
Can someone please explain how MAC address assignment works in a hyper-v cluster? I have a couple machines that need to have a static MAC address assigned and want to know how the cluster handles it when the VM is Live migrated to a new host. Thanks in advance.

    Hi ice2921,
Yes, after export and import to another Hyper-V host, the dynamic MAC address of the VM changes
after export and import to another Hyper-V host, the dynamic MAC address of the VM changes, this is by design.
As Alexey offered article, to have a dedicated Mac Address for the VMs they should be set to static MAC address, it is normal the dynamic assign to vm when the all the Hyper-v
host as there own MAC address range , this is by design of Hyper V and failover clustering when using Dynamic MAC addresses for VMs.
If you are using 2008R2 Hyper-V failover and you found it often lost the network connection and configuration, please install the hotfix.
    Reinstalled the integration services
The network connection of a running Hyper-V virtual machine may be lost under heavy outgoing network traffic on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

  • MAC address question - Solaris Intel

I am running Solaris 8 for Intel and using the Intel Ether Express Pro 100TX (iprb driver) network card and I need to permanently override the card's MAC address. Temporarily, I have used ifconfig to change the card's ether address, but as you know, that's only good until you reboot. The setting isn't in the iprb.conf file (and it's not like I have the luxury of having an OpenBoot eeProm).
If anybody knows, I appreciate your help. - Ken

The Mac addresses in intel cards are burnt into a serial eeprom on the card. So you can't change it. :-)

  • HT4262 wds MAc address question

I have a wds network working with
    - a time capsule as main
    - a n exporess as relay
    - an airport extreme as end node
it is working but slow; as I was wondering if there was any traffic between the end node and the main station i ask myselve:
should the remote stations mac address be allowed by the relay only  or the relay and the mainstation?
    any toughts on this?
    tx
    diederik

    it is working but slow;
Unfortunately, that is what WDS does. The bandwidth on the network is cut in half for each relay or remote. Since WDS only runs at "g" wireless speeds, when you have a relay and remote configured, the entire network runs at only 25% of normal "g" wireless speeds.  This would be about 13-14 Mbps link speed.  The "actual" throughput would probably be around 6-7 Mbps.
I was wondering if there was any traffic between the end node and the main station
It depends on how you have configured the main base station and remote.  If you "allow" the remote to connect to the main, then the remote will try to "hop" over the relay, so there would be direct traffic between the remote and main.
If you do not "allow" the remote to connect to the main, then the remote must be allowed to connect to the relay. In this case, there will not be direct traffic between the main and the remote.  The main connects to the relay and relay connects to the remote.
    any toughts on this?
    Avoid WDS if possible

  • What are the audio device names on mac? (for use with afplay)

The command 'afplay' has an option -d or --device that supposedly allows you to give an AUDIODEVICENAME. How can I find valid AUDIODEVICENAMEs? I tried system preferences and system profiler, but I get these errors:
    afplay -d "LINE OUT" x.wav -v
warning: device 'LINE OUT' not found
    afplay -d "Line Out" x.wav -v
warning: device 'Line Out' not found
    afplay -d Headphone x.wav -v
    warning: device 'Headphone' not found
and I've tried every permutation of the names I could come up with.

You need to define an audio device in a code/driver.
Do you have any 3rd party audio devices connected?

  • How to map MAC address to Logical name

    Hi all:
Is there any command to get the logical NIC name according to MAC address?
The 'ifconfig -a' command only list the network information for these plumbed network card.
But how to get the logical name for these unplumbed network cards if I know the MAC address?
    Thanks a lots!

    Hi both, Thanks!
I have tried to use "prtconf -v > output_file" and search under /dev and /devices method. It couldn't find the unplumbing network name.
    Is there any other suggestion?
And also I think I should describle more clear about my question.
I want to configure IPMP group automatically by scripts after OS (spac system)installed. For the script, only the MAC addresses(which network card is not unplumbed) are passed as parameter for IPMP group setting. You know for IPMP setting. it needs to written setting in /etc/hostname.<interfacename>.
So I need to map the MAC address(which is not unplumbed) to logical name(interface name).
    how to do this?
I wonder for the "ifconfig -a" command:
When I use "ifconfig -a" command in Beign script, which is called before OS Jumpstart installation. It works to find out all network interface and MAC address.
    See below script:
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    probe_interfaces()
    SI_INT=`ifconfig -a|awk -F: '/^[^.lo.]/ && /^[a-zA-Z]/{print $1;}'`
    SI_NUMINT=`ifconfig -a|awk -F: 'BEGIN{num=0;}/^[^.lo.]/ && /^[a-zA-Z]/{num++;}END{print num;}'`
    export SI_INT
    export SI_NUMINT
    probe_ethers()
    SI_ETHERS=`ifconfig -a|grep ether|awk ' { print $2 } '`
    export SI_ETHERS
And the result of executing in Begin script , see below:
Ethernet interfaces detected:( I got all these interface name and MAC address)
    bge0
    bge1
    bge2
    bge3
    ce0
    ce1
    MAC addresses:
    0:3:ba:dd:de:4f
    0:3:ba:dd:de:50
    0:3:ba:dd:de:51
    0:3:ba:dd:de:52
    0:3:ba:d9:eb:f7
    0:3:ba:d9:eb:f8
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I only configure one network card on this OS. But after the OS installed, the "ifconfig -a" doesn't work to find all these network interface. It is only show the configured network interface.
I don't know why the behaviors of "ifconfig -a" command are different between before OS installed and after OS installed.
    Thanks!

  • Considering buying time capsule have some Mac address related questions

    Hi,
as mentioned above I'm considering buying a time capsule for backup and wifi purposes.
My internet providers connection depends upon a set Mac address from the first computer you register with, the system works with any router which then clones the MAC address and issues a wifi signal to all computers. I don't have access to the origional computer which we registered our connection on, it went to the great computer graveyard in the sky and I have no record of the Mac address.
I Would like to use the time capsule system as a router and remove my existing router. my questions
can the time capsule spoof or clone a Mac address ?
I Don't want to be offline while we deal with technical support as they are quite inept sometimes.
Is it in this case really plug and play ? Can I just plug it in set it up on my Mac and away it goes where other non Apple devices can use the wifi.
Without the existing router the cable that comes into the house connect directly to the ' original ' computer and the Internet only works on that computer
hope  someone can help me I would like to purchase this device

The Time Capsule cannot clone a MAC address, so quite simply, the product is not for you.

  • Computer names persistently associated with a MAC address causing problems

Our WDS server will assign out a computer name like CompanyName###  This is great.
The problem is sometimes WDS will assign a computer name that is getting associated with the MAC address somehow--I assume this is what's happening--and kick a computer off the domain that now has that computer name.
Is there some way I can disable the association of computer names with MAC addresses, or persistent computer names?

    Hi,
How did you define your naming policy in WDS or in your answer file?
