Router/modem

Hi
I am finally able to get ADSL in my area, and have two macs (with AE cards) and a pc (with a wireless card) which I wish to be able to connect to the internet. I wish to do this wirelessly. I don’t have a DSL modem or a router, so I am looking to get a router with a built in modem and wireless capability, as this seems to be the most logical. However, there are so many products out there that I don’t know which one to pick. I have searched through the forums and can’t find a satisfactory answer. As I have said, it is for use at home, and only for three computers.
Hence I would like some recommendations for a good quality modem/router which will give good security and a decent signal strength.
Thanks

yes, for a cable connection you need separate modem. won't your internet service provider provide you with one? that is usually the norm. if not, netgear seems to have one http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DG834.php d-link also seems to have a variety of dsl routers. http://www.dlink.com/products/category.asp?cid=38&sec=0 the netgear seems kind of shady though. it lists as requirements a number of windows operating systems, then says any os with tcp/ip, which, i guess, would be mac os x. but they don't state mac specifically. my preference would be for the extreme because it has apple support, and it's more aesthetically pleasing. • Anyone ever connect an airport to a router/modem apparatus, anyone ever connect an airport to a router/modem apparatus

I have a standard cable company provided router/modem combo that has traditional cable connection to it, not an ethernet cable. I bought the airport to enhance the router's ability, but the cable screw in plug does not go anywhere on the apple airport system.  What do I do? • Connecting Express to Cox Router/Modem ?

    Hello,
I have an iMac ( OS 10.8 ) connected via ethernet to a Cisco Router/Modem ( from Cox my ISP ), I have a network set up that all my iOS dervice can connect to with out a problem.
on the second floor of my house I have an Older G4 ( OS 10.4 ,no Wifi just an Ethernet conenection ), I want to connect the Express to the G4 so it will conect to the internet.
There are threads on this forum that suggest that this can not be doen and the olnly way I can use the express with my current set-up is to connect the express to the Cisco router/Modem and configure the express in bridge mode, this seems rather redundent as my Wifi network can be used throuthout my house.
When I try to connect the express to the G4 via the ethernet connection, I only get the flashing amber light and none of my devies are able to see the express.
Any help that you can offer would be great.
        Thank You
        John

After reading a bunch of stuff and not getting the results I wanted. I decided to try a different approach. My iMac is plugged into my router via Ethernet. I took my Apple Express and plugged in the power cord only and placed it on top of the Cox Router/Modem. Using Airport Utility I set the Express up as normal. when it was up and running I simply unplugged it, took it upstairs plugged it in and attached an Ethernet cable
to the Express and then to My G4 and it worked. I connected to the Internet then I downloaded the browser
    Ten Four Fox
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37761/tenfourfox
This browser works really well with my old machine.
Hopefully someone will find this information helpful.

  • I have bought a TC to extend the range of the wireless network in the house and would like someone to explain the best way to do this? My combine router/modem is supplied by Movistar(in Spain) model Xavi 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports.

What is the best way to extend my wireless network in the house using a TC? I currently use a combined router/modem supplied by Movistar(live in Spain) model XAVI 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports. What is the best configuration and can you explain what is meant by bridging and which is best to bridge for signal strenght TC or Xavi modem/router? Have ipads, iphones, apple tv...etc and want a connection them all in the whole house which, not just downstairs, to our wireless network.

You cannot wireless bridge Apple to non-apple router.. so that is out.
The only way you can do this is run ethernet or EOP adapters.. and place the TC in a location where the other apple idevices can reach it.
If you want to repeat wireless with apple routers you have to use another apple router next to the modem.. plugged in an running as an AP.
Basically the TC is the wrong piece of equipment unless you want Time Machine backups.. take it back and buy a universal repeater.. not apple. Or buy more apple stuff like an extreme or express.. one apple router is useless to you without running ethernet.

  • I recently had my comcast cable box upgraded to a wireless router/modem. I have terrible signal so I would like to install an Apple Time Capsule. How do I install it?

I Have comcast cable in my home. It comes into my basement. Recently comcast upgraded our boxes to a wireless router/modem unit. We now have a poor wireless network. I decided to run an ethernet cable up into my kitchen so I can place a time capsule there. Is it as easy as just plugging the ethernet cable into the back of the time capsule or do I have reconfigure everything?

Plug in the Ethernet cord, turn the Time Capsule on, then go Applications/Utilities/Airport Utility and you can configure the wireless there.

  • Direct Telephone Number to Call to Return ActionTec DSL Wireless Router Modem

The Verizon repairman repaired  problem with our new ADT alarm interfering with our DSL internet connection.  However, connection is very slow (like dial-up).  He said we need to replace our Actiontec DSL Wireless Router Modem because it is "dropping packets".  What is the direct phone number at Verizon to call to get info on how to return the modem and get a new one?  We own the modem (bought it 2 years ago from Verizon).

I recommend calling 800-567-6789 and I believe it's option 1 for tech support, and option 1 for Windows, and option 1 for High Speed Internet (HSI).
A Verizon Online tech support consultant should be able to place an order to drop ship replacement equipment. I am unaware of any potential charge to do so. I believe with HSI modems and routers have a one year warranty under which Verizon will absorb the cost of a replacement.
    Thank you,

  • This is a common question, and i apologize, but I have yet to see an answer.  I'm in the UK.  I have bought an Airport Extreme.  I need to buy a moden (not a combined router/modem, presumably.)  I cannot find one in stores or on the web.  Please help.

I need a modem to go with my new Airport Extreme.  I assume I cannot connect with my existing Router/Modem.  I can't find a product either in stores or on the net.  I know this is a common question, but I have yet to find a suitable answer.  Any advice for a fairly low tech guy?

I'm glad you're able to use your current router. Sorry I can't help with your new issue, but I just wanted to add for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread - the X-Modem M3 still seems to be available from the manufacturers, this is the site I originally got it from and it's still for sale there:
    http://www.adslnation.com/phpapps/catalog/index.php?cPath=29
Thought I'd mention, as when I got my Airport I spent ages looking for a really small neat modem to use with it and this was the best I could find so other people might be interested too.

  • Westel 7500 DSL Router/Modem: Cannot connect to PPPOE server

Westel 7500 DSL Router/Modem: Cannot connect to PPPOE server
My DSL connection periodically slows down to a crawl [less than 56kbps actual transfer rate].
When I reset my DSL Modem it takes 30 MINUTES to 4 HOURS to reconnect.
The Main status screen shows DSL connected at 1700/448 kbps.
Advanced status WAN Status shows DSL connected but PPPOE not connected.
I cannot ping the ISP router or the DNS Server.

Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
    Hmm...
#1 Did you try connecting your modem directly to the NID?
    Points to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
#2 If not, please do and retest those margins and Line Attenuation.

  • Second router/modem

I have a BT (2nd gen) router/modem and works okay - though signal outside in the garden not great, probably because its in my office 3 flights up   Was thinking of getting a second router/modem to increase signal downstairs/garden and potentially plugging into my Sky Box so i can get Sky Plus anytime   I am not very IT literate so any advice e.g. would it need to be another BT router to work effectively ?  any advice appreciated   Mike

Thanks again for the advice.   So will having these plugged in also increas WIFI connectivity to near where they are plugged in ?  Mike
No, they do not extend wifi, only Ethernet connections. Some Ethernet leads do come with the TP Link ones, from what I remember.
They work by passing signals down the mains wiring.
What are powerline devices and how do they work?

  • Using Airport Extreme with Linksys Router/Modem

I was just told that my Mac mini is excruiatingly slow on the internet because I am using a Linksys router with Xfinity and that Airport Extreme will be much faster.  And that I should plug Airport Extreme into the modem.  When I checked, I don't have a separate modem.  My Linksys is a combined router/modem.    What should I do?  Do I plug the Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, or do I get a completely different modem that is only a modem?  And, if I plug Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, how do I configure the network for Airport Extreme, and what else do I need to do?   All help greatlly appreciated...I can barely get onto the Apple website!

When I signed up with Xfinity one of the stipulations was that they would not install a router/modem but only a modem. I had heard of problems with their router/modem and I didn't want to go down that path.
I don't but you mighht be able to get them to change out your router/modem for a modem. I would start there by asking them.

  • ISP Router/Modem   Time Capsule - Optimal Setup

I've read many different threads on this issue but none have really address my question fully, so posting this in the hopes of getting some feedback.
I currently have an ISP that supplies a DSL Modem/Router that serves a dual purpose, provide me with internet and TV service.  In Canada it's called Bell Fibe TV.  Currently, I have the ISP Modem Wifi OFF, wired it to my Time Capsule and use it to provide Wifi throughout the house.
My question is related to all my other devices and whether they should be connected to the Time Capsule or the ISP Router.  Time Capsule and Router are both located in the basement.  I have my house hard wired with ethernet to the basement with 3 main outlets, one in the basement for my iMac computer/office, one on the main floor, and one on the top floor.
I have two 3 Apple TV's, one in the basement, one on the main floor and one on the top floor.  I use a 5-port ethernet switch on the main floor as I have a variety of different devices there ie: Apple TV, TV Receiver Box, Sonos Player etc.  I also have an Airport Express that is wirelessly extending my Wifi.
What is the optimal setup in this situation?  I have my Time Capsule on DHCP with router mode OFF (Bridged).  Should I be connecting the hard-wired ethernet cables that go throughout the house to the ISP Router/Modem or to the Time Capsule? Does it matter? In recent weeks, I've noticed some odd issues where my Apple TV will lose its network settings and not find the network.
Also, I noticed in BRIDGE mode, there's no way to setup a Guest account on Wifi.
Looking for any suggestions/help on this.
    Thanks

My question is related to all my other devices and whether they should be connected to the Time Capsule or the ISP Router.
If the Time Capsule is configured correctly, it makes no difference whether devices connect to the Time Capsule or the ISP modem/router, since both the modem/router and Time Capsule are on the same network.
I have my Time Capsule on DHCP with router mode OFF (Bridged)
That is the correct setting for your situation.
Should I be connecting the hard-wired ethernet cables that go throughout the house to the ISP Router/Modem or to the Time Capsule?
    See answer above.
The best practice, wiring wise, would be to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the modem/router to an Ethernet switch. Then connect the Time Capsule and all other Ethernet connections to the switch.
Performance will not be any better this way, but the network layout and troubleshooting are easier in this type of setup. If you do not want to add a switch, then connect to the most convenient port on either the modem/router or Time Capsule.
Also, I noticed in BRIDGE mode, there's no way to setup a Guest account on Wifi.
That is correct. The Guest Network feature will only work correctly if the Time Capsule is the main router for a network....not a bridge to the network.

  • Connecting 2 Extremes to a router modem

Hi, I'm in Singapore and the service provider (StarHub) provides a DLink router modem 2-in-1 for Internet access. I want to connect two Airport Extremes to the DLink using Ethernet wire. Actually they have connected for me but accessing wifi is intermittent and I am not convinced they have done it correctly hence my seeking help on this forum. Here are my questions:
    1. All devices should be set to bridged mode?
    2. The DLink should be the primary and only DHCP?
    3. The DLink's wifi should be disabled? The reason is I prefer to use the Extreme's 6 antennae, etc and not DLink's presumably more basic architecture.
    4. The DLink Ethernet LAN out can be to either the Extreme's WAN or LAN in that it doesn't matter?
    5. Will my iPhone 5 on iOS 7 automatically seek out the strongest signal i.e. closest Extreme?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. All devices should be set to bridged mode?
Both AirPort Extremes need to be setup in Bridge Mode.
    2. The DLink should be the primary and only DHCP?
Correct, assuming that the D-Link is providing both DHCP and NAT services for the network.
    3. The DLink's wifi should be disabled?
Not necessarlly, unless it is creating other problems, or you prefer to have it disabled.
    4. The DLink Ethernet LAN out can be to either the Extreme's WAN or LAN in that it doesn't matter?
When the AirPort Extreme is configured in Bridge Mode, all ports behave as LAN ports, so it does not matter which port that you use. To help keep things organized, I prefer to connect to the WAN port on each AirPort.
    5. Will my iPhone 5 on iOS 7 automatically seek out the strongest signal i.e. closest Extreme?
Probably not.  You may likely have to turn the WiFi off when you move the iPhone close to another AirPort Extreme and then turn the WiFi back on to get the iPhone to pick up the signal from the closest AirPort.

  • Firewall Issue with 1.5 and 2Wire 2701HG-B router/modem

I've set up holes in my router's firewall so that I can reach my G5 via ssh/ftp/http. And I am able to reach the G5 from computers outside the firewall by connecting to the router's IP address. But if I try to connect to that same IP address -- ssh/ftp/http -- from either of the two computers that are behind the firewall, including the G5, the connection fails.
This setup worked prior to upgrading to 10.5 last week but I'm not sure if this is an issue with my 10.5 (DNS?) or and issue with the 2Wire router/modem. I called 2Wire but they didn't have any suggestions.
