Router questions/suggestions please

My old Belkin died and I also have new components in the house that will use wireless and am looking for suggestions on what I need to get to support them all. House is about 1400 sq ft. I have a laptop and Wii in the living room, a PS3 in kids room, and another laptop in the office. All are on the same floor. Recommendations? Without breaking the bank? Thanks!!

It achieved the best overall score in PC Mag's test of routers. Since the OP asked for suggestions, I suggested it because it is a good trade off of price vs. performance. Dual band routers are more expensive, and are of benefit mainly in mixed client environments (b/g/h). There are better routers out there, but nothing in the same price range that outperforms it. In my home, I replaced a Netgear wnr834b with the Linksys wrt160n, and I got better throughput at same distance,, plus I was able to get about a 40% to 45% increase in distance.range with the Linksys. I did some reading and comparing online and in the trades before deciding on which router to replace the wnr834b with, and the Linksys was the one that was most recommended. It never drops, is ultra reliable, does not get as warm as the Netgear, and has better firmware and setup. I replaced the Netgear because it was constantly dropping connections, would not give decent signal strength/throughput in any room except the room it was sitting in. As far as dual band, If you live in a condo or apartment that is saturated with routers, then the dual band might also serve a purpose, but in real world most people do not need, and would not understand how to properly use, a dual band router. I use the Linksys with the 20-40MHz wide channel setting, and I get great performance. Since all of my wireless clients are N, I have no real need of dual band. If I were running 802.11g or 802.11b clients in addition to my 802.11n clients, I would consider a dual band.

Hello, if those Question marks are in the Dock, it means OSX can't find them either.
Right click on the Q mark & choose Remove from Dock, might be Roght click or click, then Options>Remove from dock on later OSX versions.
Sometimes you can just drag it of the Dock, or CMD +drag it off.

Question about TC, Apple TV and iTunes. Thoughts/suggestions please :)

I picked up a TC and Apple TV last weekend, and have finally got them both working through my Netgear 834G modem/router.
I have currently got iTunes library setup on my Macbook Pro, but would like to move this onto the TC to free up space on my laptop. How do I go about doing this? Is it literally just a matter of copying/moving the itunes music folder onto the TC?
When the files are sat on the TC will I still be able to synch the apple TV by pointing it at the Macbook Pro library which in turns does not contain any physical files but points to the TC music folder?
Also, will I be able to point my partner's PC with iTunes installed to the same library to allow it to stream from there?
I don't know the best way of doing this and would like some thoughts and suggestions please. I basically want the files on the TC, the apple TV synching with it, the ability to play the music in the study (where my partners PC is) and also in the future, the ability to play music in the bedroom & dining room. Could I do this via airtunes and will I need an airport express to do this?

I am interested in the iPhoto support as well. Are you able to zoom in and see photos in their native resolution- or is ATV downconverting them for 720P support. I would imagine that it must be doing something on the backend to shrink photos or else the wifi transfer would take a long time. Maybe the 8GB of cache is being used to store thumnails on the fly? Are you able to quickly move from photo to photo or is there a lag?

I end up in a mess, changing I-Ds, etc. I have paid an IT company to sort things out, with some success, but still I keep getting thiese messages. Surely iTunes should be less complex than this. I am using ethernet and am using a Linksys SE1500 5- port fast etherner switch, i cant seem to sign in on the apple for anything although I have accounts set up in itunes/apple and netflix . Any suggestions PLEASE have spent 3 hours argh. thanks

Are you getting any messages about date and time.
Have you tried restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Are you connected to the network correctly.

What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band? Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on.

Workflow suggestions, please - Folder to Collection?

I need some suggestions please of how to efficiently get images from Folders to Collections. Within each folder I need to select images and place them in the same collection.
What I'm currently doing is to set the required Collection as Target Collection. However, when I select the images in the folder - either all (Ctrl+A) or random (Ctrl + L.click) and then press B, only the first image gets placed in the Target Collection.
Is this a bug or feature?
I can work around this by dragging the selected images to the collection but then have to keep switching between the Folders and Collection view.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Answered my own question
The problem for me is that I was using two monitors.
The second display was set to Grid view and this is where I select the images. If you then press 'B' to send to the Target Collection then only the first image gets sent.
If you have Grid View on the first display and then select the images and press 'B' all the selected images go to the Target Collection.
The same effect happens with Flagging or setting Colour Labels. Only first image on second screen (Grid View) but all selected images if on first screen (Grid View)

Go step by step and test.
1.Power Cycle
   Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
   Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
   It will take a while.
   Restart the computer.
   Start up in Safe Mode.

2.Click Wif icon in the menubar, make sure that Wifi is turned on and default network is selected.
3. Turn off proxies, if selected.
     System Preference > Network > Advanced > Proxies Tab
     Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
     Click "OK" then "Apply”.
4. Turn off Extensions, if any.
     Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Very strange broadband question. Please help!

Hi guys. A few days ago I was having problems with my telephone. We could not make or receive calls but our broadband was still working fine, just a little bit slower than usual. I filed a fault report with BT and the issue was resolved within 2 days and my telephone is now working fine but my broadband is now playing up. It is permanently slow, websites load increddibly slow and my download speeds are at a maximum of about 50 kb/sec. I'm on BT total broadband unlimited so it can't be me being limited for going over my monthly usuage.
The router is connected directly to the master socket and my computer is connected via ethernet port. The only other computer in the house is connected wirelessly and is also getting shockingly slow speeds. I've logged into the router and it is saying that my connection speed is 4mb/sec. I've also done BT's own speed test and that found a similar result. Here's a screen cap of the tests results.
If both tests are stating my line speed is currently around 4mb/ sec how is it that my broadband is so slow and my maximum download speed is 50kb/sec. Would really appreciate some help, thanks.

your problem is your profile is only 750 instead of 3500 which leads to lower throughput/download.
if connection now ok then staying connected to the internet 24/7 for 3/5 days maybe sooner the profile will come back to normal

Maybe It's just late & I've had a bad day.... but I haven't needed a low level Hex disk edit & search utility suitable for an Intel 10.4.x Mac until now and can't seem to locate one.
There should be plenty of free/shareware options (because they're handy and not particularly hard to write ... and every tech head needs one some time)...
Any suggestions please?

Yes, I know there are some good decent nice people behind those names..fellow human beings - and fellow programmers (so yes, I do know...) In previous incarnations I have 'thunk up' and developed, Marketed & supported considerably more complex Apps & systems myself - I even know some of the people you mention personally - and they are usually decent Blokes/women but normally, it isn't the programmers who make the decisions on pricing/features/support/performance/upgrade costs & cycles etc...
My only error was, I agree, the phrase 'without exception' - but (mainly) only because I haven't bought/tested & used all of them very very recently. So I offer my apologies to those to whom my remarks should not apply (long, late night/early morning frustration...)
However, I also offer a few simple pertinent examples:
One 'top name' Utility company had a 'save your Mac HD' product on the market for some time that was almost guaranteed to TRASH it irretrievably but did NOT say so - nor did they help or compensate those they harmed.
Several are selling what amount to simple, pretty, GUI shells for 'free' or OS-included command line tools - no more, no less but do NOT say so and are asking good money for the 'software'.
Many are asking ridiculous prices for "regular upgrades" so you can keep their tool current with your Mac OS - one wants US$100/year for it, another, $15 per u/g, others, US$25 or $40 per u/g; one asks 'only' $10 - and these 'upgrades' are happening 3,4,5,6 times per year and are necessary for the Marketing company to keep their product Saleable to new purchasers and new Macs (as well as for important Bug Fixes - and only co-incidentally to keep it performing with your current Mac and OS - which is what you paid them for in the first place).
I won't pay for a product 3, 6 or 9 times and I won't advise my clients to: It's not unreasonable for a person to expect a 'sensible lifetime/currency' of Product X for Computer Y - say 3 years (e.g. AppleCare). I wouldn't object to paying for an "upgrade" at that point - IF it's worth the money.
Software is Waaay too expensive in many cases and is simply inviting 'piracy' - from people who have already PAID for the product: sadly, they are killing their own Gooses.
Seriously, one product costs ca. US$100 to Buy in the first place
To keep it actually working for you costs about the same again Per Year - a 3 year 'sensible lifetime' or 'currency' cost of US$300 or $400! [That'll buy a lot of 'bare drives' to put in a handy Firewire case for automatic backups in Background, differential backups etc. and other simple practices which render this product type largely unnecessary ].
For what? A relatively simple set of utilities which would actually cost the company involved less than $5 total each - over 3 years - to make available to existing ( or 'current') owners. [Applecare 'complete' Hardware and Software warranty & support on a US$2000 iMac - which includes Tech Tools Pro Deluxe or somesuch costs about US$165 for 3 years. Total.]
Having designed, developed, Marketed, supported & maintained more complex Applications to/for a sizeable user-base (in US terms) over multiple complete Series of Product 'life-cycles' - regular Updates and all, I think I know where the pirates are.
These practices have been rampant in the MSWindows™ market for a longtime. It's a real shame to see it in the Mac world.
I have all the esteem in the world for those fellow human beings who deserve such - and programmers who are 'good decent nice people'.
I have none to spare for monopolists, 'exploitationists' or any of those who take unfair/unreasonable advantage of their fellow human beings - AND of programmers who are 'good decent nice people' (like, say, ME... .
In any event, as I said: they are "killing their Gooses": I know of at least 6 software companies which went this route a while back. All are dead or dying.

Left to its own devices, the iPad won't find any printers at all except for, I gather, AirPrint ones. All the rest have to be handled in various different ways through various different apps and techniques.
Suggest you provide a bit more information about what you're actually trying to connect and perhaps someone can provide some more specific info for you.

You need a DATA service enabled by your carrier to be able to send e-mail via thier network. Do you have a data plan with your carrier ? If so - is it enabled ?
Can you access internet thru your network (not wifi) ?

Maybe the document is corrupted. Can you open other Pages documents? Preview may open it. Right click (or control click) on the document in Finder and Open With > Preview.
If that works, Edit > Select All, Edit > Copy. Then paste into a blank Pages document. Formatting may be messed up, but you will have editable text. Then Save (with a different name), close and see if you can open the new document.

When I log out of Firefox it appears to be closed but obviously isn't because I cannot subsequently open it without doing a re-start - any suggestions please?

Thanks for your answer. I'm working my way through the blog, and trying to take all of the steps. Hitman Pro did find 5 trojans, and many remnants of other malware, so hopefully that will help. I'll post again when I've finished trying everything else.
I had already run Malware Bytes, It did not find/remove the sweetim toolbar, but found a different trojan. Something is up with my antivirus I think.
