Router Woes

I currently am using a D-Link DI-524 that can no longer emit a Wireless Signal 3 yards or more. After some researching, I purchased a LinkSYS WRT54GL. Upon trying to install the new router (the linksys), all lights light up as it should, but nothing can connect to the internet. My computer gives me Page not found in Firefox (via ethernet cable), my IPhone states that Safari is not connected to the Internet, and my PSP tells me that an Internet Test failed. The setup is identical to my last one, yet I can't get the router to work. I set up my old one, for the time being, and it works, as I am able to visit and post here. Any suggestions?

Possibly the router needs reconfiguration .....
So reset it for 2-3 minutes ..... & reconfigure it ....

  • Wireless B router woes after firmware upgrade

    I downloaded and installed the firmware upgrade for my wireless B ver.4 router and now it's not transmitting a wireless signal. Computers plugged into the wireless router get internet connection, but it doesn't seem that the the router is broadcasting wireless. I tried to go to my routers set-up by using the default router IP...but it won't connect...any thoughts?

    Since you have upgraded the firmware on your Router, You need to Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

    The first thing to say is ringing BT is like a Fisher Price my first broadband...
    Quick question if I may please, my parents are using a BT Home 2.0, and it often drops the broadband connection (Flashing Orange light) and re connects this occurs several times a day. So I bought them a Netgear DG834v5 and connected this no problem. However to my dismay within the first hour of it being in use it disconnected from the line about 10 times, and continually did so during my sunday lunch ! So rather than leave them with this, I connected back the BT hub 2.0 and this did the same continually dropping the line and re connecting every few mins. (doing less so now)
    I note this statement from the BT hub firmware during this process...
    After you've installed your Hub, it can take up to 24 hours to establish the fastest, most reliable service available on your line. During this time, the Broadband light flashes orange between periods of steady blue. Please wait until it glows a steady blue. This can take up to 24 hours.
    I am assuming this is just bad to stop people phoning them for new installs etc, I never in all my years of broadband use (never been a BT customer myself mind) come across this being a requirement for new h/w being installed on a broadband line? So I presume this is why the netgear was doing the same?
    Is this geniune or do my folks have a problem with their line?

    Hi Colin.
    As others have said, it takes time for the system to recognise line conditions etc, and it's done over a period of days to find a stable connection. This is at the start of the service. Not sure why you are saying it's to stop people "phoning for new installs", that frankly makes no sense and is irrelevant.
    How long have they had BT Broadband ?
    The problem to me looks like serious line condition problems, the FEC errors are astronomical !
    The netgear was doing the same due to the same poor line conditions.

  • IPhone won't connect to my router, but will to my neighbours'!

    I have an iPhone 3G with the latest software update installed, and a Netgear DG834N wireless router (latest firmware). The router has no security enabled except MAC filtering and a hidden SSID.
    Until recently, the phone would connect to the router successfully. Its MAC address is still listed on the router panel. But suddenly it cannot see the router at all, even if it's right next to it. If I enter the network's name, the iPhone responds with 'network not found'. And yet it has no trouble connecting to my neighbours' wireless routers even two houses along the road.
    I've tried the obvious things, like un-hiding the SSID and turning off MAC filtering, but it makes no difference.
    I just don't get it: why would an iPhone 3G be unable to detect a router with no security which is in the same room? I have three Macs in the house which detect a strong signal from the router across three whole floors and into the garden!

    Ok this is getting RIDICULOUS Apple... there is obviously a problem with the software/firmware... this WiFi issue is popping up on ALL iPhone old and new; heck some of these people just bought a phone 2 weeks ago and the WiFi has quit working.
    I have spent the better part of a month surfing the discussion forums looking for a resolution to my iPhone WiFi woes, to no avail!! I have tried all the reasonable suggestions, nothing. I have tried all the crazy and moronic suggestions and still nothing. Every once in a while I can connect to my WiFi, but it only last a few seconds. I tried the restart, the static IP, a new router, no security, b, g, f and z :o) Seriously... this shat is broke and Apple needs to fix it.
    I am a 20 year veteran of IT and network solutions, and with everything I have tried, I have not been able to resurrect my iPhone's WiFi. The bottom line is this... I purchased my iPhone on June 29th, 2007 and it has work flawlessly with any network, hot spots, at work, with security without, with mac address filitering and without and many other configuration... until iPhone OS 2.2.1, and now I and hundreds if not thousands of others can no longer connect to WiFi.
    It surely does not seam like Apple reads or monitors these forums... but I will say this... we need to all STOP spending our time monkeying around with our wireless networks and instead start writing, calling and posting here asking if not telling Apple to fix this problem in the next firmware release.
    I for one will be giving up on the iPhone if Apple does not fix this issue soon. The iPhone becomes basically like any other so-called smart phone without the WIFi... heck you cannot do half of the cool things on the iPhone without the WiFi feature.
    Come'on Apple fix the iPhone WiFi.

  • Remove routing group

    I just finished an SBS2003-to-Windows2012/Exchange2010 migration. I went through all the steps to migrate Exchange, await/verify replication, etc, seize the FSMO roles to the W2012 server, and finally removed the SBS2003 server from the domain and shut it
    down. Everything is working fine with just Exchange 2010 with one small exception. One thing somehow got leftover: the Exchange administrative group containing only the old server. The only evidence is the event log here:
    The topology doesn't contain a route to Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 [Old Server FQDN] in Routing Group blah, blah, blah.
    Everything I have looked up on the subject explains how to remove problematic/obsolete routing group connectors; however, Get-RoutingGroupConnector returns nothing, and ADSIEdit reveals the problem: there a routing group containing just the old server left
    over from the migration.
    Configuration -> Services -> Microsoft Exchange -> [Exchange domain] -> Administrative Groups. The next level is where I see the problem.  There are two administrative groups:
    The new administrative group containing only the new Exchange 2010 server under CN=Servers
    The original "first administrative group"containing only the old Exchange 2003 server under CN=Servers
    I do see one disturbing thing that might indicate I missed a step in migration: the new administrative group is missing CN=Hierarchies that is present in the old/defunct administrative group. The new one has these:
    Advanced Security
    Arrays
    Database Availability Groups
    Databases
    Routing Groups
    Servers
    Each of those contains references only to objects that exist and are functional in Exchange 2010. The old administrative group contains these:
    Advanced Security (looks the same as the new one above)
    Folder Hierarchies (one entry for Public Folders, Clas msExchPFTree)
    Routing Groups (with nothing under first routing group -> Connections)
    Servers (and only the old server listed)
    So my questions are two:
    Do I need to (and can I) move the Folder Hierarchies to the other administrative group? Or do I need to create one manually there?
    If so, and when done, can I simply delete the obsolete/defunct "first administrative group" via ADSIEdit?

    So, I think maybe I found the solution. I found a post here:
    http://blog.bruteforcetech.com/archives/766 indicating how to manually create the Folder Hierarchies object under the new Exchange administrative group. Besides creating the Folder Hierarchy in the correct administrative group, I had to manually populate
    the msExchOwningPFTreeBL attribute object of the PF Store. Then I got "multiple MAPI..." errors when attempting to manage public folders, so I finally moved the entire obsolete administrative group container to Lost & Found inside ADSIEdit
    (so I could get it out of the way but still see it for reference).
    I think the problem is solved; however, I would not be too surprised if one of you experts finds a major hole in my logic (beside missing the Folder Hierarchies during migration, which I think was the source of my woes today).

  • Wifi on Netgear WGR614 router slow wifi fixed !!!!!!

    I have had wifi problems on my new I Phone 4 since the 24th June at home with connecting to my router and get slow speeds and web pages that did not load and would freeze but have tried a little trick after seaching all over the web this weekend that seemed to have solved my wifi woes as of the last 15 hours I have had lighting wifi speeds and great connection so it might work for other users too.
    1. Upgrade to latest firmware for your router.
    2. Within router settings my mode was setup to use 802.11B & 802.11G mode, change this from either auto or B&G and select it to use 802.11B ONLY or B mode only.
    3. Save settings, reboot router and reconnect with your I Phone.
    This has worked for me after 2 months of woes. Hope It Helps

  • How do I use my airport extreme with my FIOS router?

    How do I use my AirPort Extreme base station with my FIOS Router to extend my network?  I have hard disks connected to my AirPort Extreme and would lik to access them.

    Probably can't answer all your questions - but.... I use a Linksys (wired and wireless) router as my primary entry point for FIOS. I use a Time Capsule and an Airport Express as a common wireless connection. So I have two visibile wireless networks and use them both depending on where I am in the house. Both the TC and AEx can be seen either wirelessly or wired from the entire network. Note - the Linksys provides all the DHCP - you set the apple routers as "bridge mode."

    I tried that and it didn't work. As for upgrading the ASA version, I'd like to but this is an old router and I don't have a support contract with Cisco anymore, so I can't access the latest firmware.

    There are 2 conflicting configuration:

    How do you want to connect VLAN 10? is it on its own interface on the firewall? if it is, then you would need to configure a name for it, via the nameif command, and remove the above route inside
    if it is going to be a routed subnet via the inside interface, then the above route needs to be modified as follows:
    route inside 192.168.0.0 255.255.240.0 10.192.32.x
    --> 10.192.32.x needs to be the next hop which is your L3 switch vlan 1 interface ip
    and you would also need to shutdown interface vlan 10 on the ASA and remove the IP Address.

  • New FiOS GigE Wireless 'N' Router has slowed our wireless speed to a crawl...need help!

    This past Tuesday I installed the new N router.  Also, we upgraded to FiOS Quantum 75/35 (previously 15/5).  That was activated the following day.  I can't complain about the internet speed to our pc since it's wired.  Speed tests showed we were getting what was advertised. :-)
    For the wifi, I can't figured out for the life of me what's causing our devices (e.g., our Nexus 7 tablets) to have a link speeds of 65Mbps one minute and then drop down to 5 or even 1.  The same situation was happening with my HTC Incredible II phone, but I think that connection was tapping out at 54Mbps.  The bottom would just drop out of the signal for some reason.  Other times we couldn't even connect back in.  The devices would say they're not in range even when they were in front of the router.  Not sure if I fubarred the router install or what?  I just swapped out the current Fios router for this new one.  Pretty straightforward.  At first, I logged into the router software with the defaults, but then I changed the the username, pswd, SSID, etc. to match what I used previously.  I thought it was working fine the night of the install but not so much after Fios got bumped up in speed the following day.  Maybe just a co-inky-dink?
    I know you never get the same speeds compared to a wired pc but this seems worse (wifi-wise) than before the new router came along.  I've read that the 'N' routers can be finicky to set-up to run properly.  Maybe a setting or two is off?
    I don't know if the fact that my son's netbook's wifi card is only b/g compatible would slow our network down?  At this point I'm grasping at straws!  I talked with tech support last night for 40 mins to no avail.  I got the usual story about wireless devices running slower than wired ones, that these smaller devices aren't capable to maintaining higher speeds (which I'm not sure I agree with 100%), the more active devices you have slows down your network, etc, etc.  I get all that.  But something is going on or actually, it's not.  LOL!
    Why I don't agree with the above statement I mentioned is because I have my tablet at work now and the wifi speed is 54Mbps and it's constant.  So it seems to have no problems with this speed, unlike what I was told over the phone.
    Let me know if I can provide any further technical details that'll make it easier to help diagnose our wifi issues.

    Here's an update since I got home:
    Nexus7 (N7) took a min or so to connect to wifi when I got home.  When it did, speed said 65Mbps.  So I ran speedtest.net and got 27/20.  Shortly after that I tried again but it was hesitating.  I checked the speed and it was down to 5Mbps.  Brought it upstairs to router and pc, and eventually it was back to 65.  Ran speed test a few more times with similar results.  I did notice that the connection would intermittently come and go.  Not sure why.  Looking at the wifi section  on my N7, it says our network is out of range and the N7 is 2' from the router.  Every now and then my network will go to the top of the list and it'll say it's obtaining ip address, then secured with wpa/wpa2 psk and it's locked in.  So I hit the connect button and it's out of range again.  Of course, while I was typing it decided to connect after 10-15 mins of trying/nothing.  Says, signal strength excellent, 52 Mbps.  Spoke too soon.  It's off again.  Crap!  Back on again but speed was 19, now 5.
    I did check router settings and this is what I have:

  • I want a new and more powerful (non-Apple) wireless router but I still want to use my existing Time Capsule to continue with my Time Machine backups and I still need the Time Capsule's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features and capabilities

    THE SHORTER STORY
    My goal is to successfully use my existing Time Capsule (TC) with a new and more powerful wireless router. I need a new and more powerful wireless router in order to reach a distant Denon a/v receiver that is physically located in a master bedroom some 50 feet away from my modem. I need to provide this Denon a/v receiver with an Internet connection so that it can obtain its firmware updates and I need to connect this Denon a/v receiver to my network in order to use its AirPlay feature. I believe l still need the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features because I am not sure if the new wireless router will provide me with the NAS like features / capabilities I need to share files between my two Apple laptops with OS X 10.8.2. And I know that I absolutely need my TC's seamless integration with Apple's Time Machine (TM) application in order to continue to make effortless backups of my two Apple laptops. To my knowledge nothing works with TM like Apple's TC. I also need the hard disk storage space built into the TC.
    I cannot use a long wired Ethernet cable connection in this apartment and I cannot use power-line adapters. I have read that wireless range extenders and repeaters are difficult to successfully set-up and that they will reduce data speeds, especially so when incorrectly set-up. I cannot relocate my modem and/or primary base station wireless router.
    In short, I want to use my TC with my new and more powerful wireless router. I need to stop using the TC to connect to the modem. However, I still need the TC for seamless TM backups. I also need to use the TC's built in hard drive for storage. And I may still need the TC's NAS capabilities to share files wirelessly between laptops because I am assuming the new wireless router will not provide NAS capabilities for OS X 10.8.2 (products like this/non-Apple products rarely seem to work with OS X 10.8.2/Macs to provide NAS features and capabilities). Finally, I want to continue to use my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also want to continue to use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Can someone please advise on how to set-up my new Asus wireless router with my existing TC in such a way to accomplish all of this?
    What is the best configuration or set-up to accomplish my above goals?

    THE FULL STORY
    I live in an apartment building where my existing Time Capsule (TC) is located in my living room and serves many purposes. Specially, my TC is at least all of the following:
    (1) Wi-Fi router connected to Comcast Internet service via Motorola SB6121 cable modem - currently the TC is the Wi-Fi base station that connects to the modem and has the gateway address to the Internet. The TC now provides the DHCP service for the Wi-Fi network.
    (2) Wireless router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to several Wi-Fi clients - two Apple laptop computers, an iPod touch, an iPad and an iPhone all connect wirelessly to the Internet via the TC.
    (3) Wired Ethernet router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to three different devices - a Panasonic TV, LG Blu-Ray player and an Apple TV each use one of the three LAN ports on the back of the TC to gain access to the Internet.
    (4) Primary base station in my attempt to extend my wireless network to a distant (located far away) Denon a/v receiver requiring a wired Ethernet connection - In addition to the TC, which is my primary base station, I am also using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. I cannot use a wired Ethernet connection to continuously travel from the living room to the master bedroom. The distance is too great as I cannot effectively hide the Ethernet cable in this apartment.
    (5) Time Machine (TM) backup facilitator - I use my TC to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops using Apple's Time Machine (TM) application. However, I ran out of storage space on my TC and therefore added external storage to it. Specifically, I added an external hard drive to my TC via the USB port on the back of the TC. I now use this added external hard drive connected to the TC via USB as the destination storage drive for my TM back-ups. I have partitioned the added external hard drive, and each of the several partitions all have enough storage space (e.g., each of the two partitions used by TM are sized at three times the hard drive space of each laptop, etc.). Everything works flawlessly.
    (6) Network Attached Storage (NAS) - In addition to using the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) capabilities to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops via TM, I also store other additional files on both (A) the hard drive built into the TC and (B) the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB (there are additional separate partitions on this drive for these other additional and non-TM backup files).
    I use the TC's NAS feature with my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Again, everything works wirelessly and flawlessly. (Note: the Apple TV is connected to the network via Ethernet and a LAN port on the back of the TC).
    The issue I am having is when I try to listen to music via Apple's AirPlay in the master bedroom. This master bedroom is located at a distance of two rooms away from the TC's current location in the living room, which is a distance of about 50 feet. This apartment has a long rectangular floor plan where each room is connected to the next in a straight line. In order to use AirPlay in the master bedroom I am using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. This additional base station connects wirelessly to the WiFi network provided by my TC and then gives my Denon receiver the wired Ethernet connection it needs to use AirPlay. I have tried moving my iTunes music directly onto my laptop's hard drive, and then I used AirPlay on this same laptop to connect to the Denon receiver. I always get a successful connection and the song plays, but the problem is that the connection inevitably drops.
    I live in an apartment building and all of the many wireless routers in this building create a great deal of WiFi interference on both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands. I have tried connecting the Netgear product to each the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but neither band can successfully maintain a wireless connection between the TC and the Netgear product. I also attempted to maintain a wireless connection to an iPod touch using the 2.4 GHz band and AirPlay on this iPod touch to play music on the Denon receiver. Again, I was able to establish a connection and successfully play music, but after a few minutes the connection dropped and the music stopped playing. I therefore have concluded that I have a poor wireless connection in the master bedroom. I can establish a connection, but it is intermittent with frequent drops. I have verified this with both laptops by working in the master bedroom for an entire day on both laptops. The Internet connection in this master bedroom proved to drop out frequently - about once an hour with the laptops. The wireless connection and the frequency of its dropout are far worse with the iPod touch and an iPhone.
    I cannot relocate the TC. Also, this is an apartment and I therefore cannot extend the range of my network with Ethernet cable (I cannot drill through walls/ceilings, etc.). It is an old building with antiquated wiring and power-line adapters are not likely to function properly, nor can I spare the direct power outlet required with a power-line adapter. I simply need every outlet I can get and cannot afford to block any direct outlet.
    My solution is to use a more powerful wireless router. I found the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router which will likely provide a better connection to my wireless Internet in the master bedroom than the TC. The 802.11ac band of this Asus wireless router is totally useless to me, but based on what I have read I believe this router will provide a stronger connection at greater distances then my TC. And I will be ready for 802.11ac when it becomes more widely available.
    However, I still need to maintain the TC's ability to work seamlessly with TM to backup my two laptops. Also, I doubt the new Asus router will provide OS X 10.8.2 with NAS like features and capabilities. Therefore, I still would like to use the TC's NAS capabilities to share files on my network wirelessly assuming the Asus wireless router fails to provide this feature. I need a new and more powerful wireless router, but I need to maintain the TC's NAS features and seamless integration with TM. Finally, I want to continue to use my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also want to continue to use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Can someone advise on how to set-up my existing TC with this new Asus wireless router in such a way to accomplish all of this?

    In regards to a Plan B, I hear ya brother. I am already on what feels like Plan Z. Getting WiFi to a far off room in an apartment building crowded with WiFi routers is a major pain.
    I am basing my thoughts on the potential of a new and more powerful router reaching the far off master bedroom based on positive reviews on cnet.com, pcmag.com and pcworld.com. All 3 of these web sites have reviewed the Asus RT-AC66U 802.11AC wireless router as well as its virtual twin cousin 802.11n router. What impressed me is that all 3 sites rated this router #1 overall in terms of both range and speed (in both the 802.11n and 802.11AC flavors). They tested the router in real world scenarios where the router needed to compete with a lot of other wireless routers. One of the sites even buried this Asus router in a media room with thick walls and inside a media cabinet. This Asus router should be able to serve my 2.4 GHz band wireless clients (iPod Touch and iPhone 4) with a 2.4GHz Wireless-N band offering some 50 feet of dependable range and a 60 Mbps throughput at that range. I am hoping that works, but it's borderline for my master bedroom. My 5 GHz wireless clients (laptops) will enjoy a 5GHz Wireless-N band offering 150 feet of range and a 200 Mbps throughput at that range. I have no idea what most of that stuff means, but I did also read that Asus could reach 300 feet and I got really excited. My mileage may vary of course and I'm sure I'm making some mistakes in my interpretation of their data. However, my Winter 2009 Time Capsule was rated by cnet.com to deliver real world performance of less than that, and 802.11AC may or may not be useful to me someday. But when this Asus arrives and provides anything other than an excellent and consistent wireless signal without drops in the master bedroom it's going right back!
    Your solution sounds great, but I have some questions. I'm using OS X 10.8.2 and Airport Utility (version 6.1 610.31) and on its third tab labeled "Wireless" the top option enables you to set "Network Mode" to either:
    Create a wireless network
    Extend a wireless network
    Off
    Given your advice to "Turn off the wireless on the TC," should I set Network Mode to Off? Sorry, I'm clueless in regards to how to turn off the wireless on the TC any other way. Can you provide specific steps on how to turn off the wireless on the TC? If what I wrote is correct then what should the rest of this Wireless tab look like, or perhaps it is irrelevant when wireless is off?
    Next, what do you mean by "Configure the TC in Bridge Mode?" Under Airports Utility's fourth tab labeled "Network" the top option "Router Mode" allows for either:
    DHCP and Nat
    DHCP Only
    Off (Bridge Mode)
    Is your advice to Configure the TC in Bridge Mode as simple as setting Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)? If yes, then what should the rest of this "Network" tab look like? Anything else involved in configuring the TC in Bridge Mode or is it really as simple as setting the Router Mode to "Off (Bridge Mode)"?
    How about the other tabs in Airport Utility, can they all stay as is assuming I use the same network name and password for the new Asus wireless router? Or do I need to make any other changes to the TC via Airport Utility?
    Finally, in regards to your Plan B suggestion. I agree. But do you have a Plan B for me? I would greatly appreciate any alternative you could provide. Specifically, if you needed a TC's Internet connection to reach a far off corner of your home how would you do it? In the master bedroom I need both a wired Ethernet connection for the Denon a/v receiver and wireless Internet connection for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
    Power-Line Adapters - High Cost, Blocks at Least One Wall Outlet and Does Not Solve the Wireless Need
    I actually like exactly one power-line adapter, which is the D-Link DHP-540 PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch. This D-Link power-line adapter plugs into your wall outlet with a normal sized plug (regular standard power cord much like any other electronic device) instead of all of the other recommended power-line adapters that not only use at least one wall outlet but also often block the second outlet. You cannot use a power strip with a power-line adapter which is very impractical for me. And everything about my home is strange and upside down. The wiring here is a disaster and I don't have faith in its ability to carry Internet access from the living room to the master bedroom. And this D-Link power-line adapter costs $90 each and I need at least two to make the connection to the Denon A/V receiver. So, $180 on this solution and I still don't have a dependable drop free wireless connection in the master bedroom. The Denon might get its Ethernet Internet connection from the power-line adapter, but if I want to use an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch to stream AirPlay music to the Denon wirelessly (Pandora/iTunes, etc.) from the master bedroom the wireless connection will not be stable in there and I've already spent $190 on just the two power-line adapters needed.
    Extenders / Repeaters / Wirelessly Extending the Wireless Network
    I have also read great things about the Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Range Extender (Repeater) SR20000G and the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender. The former is very powerful and the latter is easier to install. Both cost about $150 ish so similar to a new Asus router. However, everything I read about Range Extenders points to them not being very effective for a far off corner of your house wherein it's apparently hard to place the range extender in the sweet spot where it both gets a strong enough signal to actually effectively extend the wireless signal and otherwise does not reduce network throughput speeds to unacceptable speeds.
    Creating a Roaming Network By Hard Wiring with Ethernet Cable - Wife Would Say, "**** No!"
    Even Apple seems to warn against wirelessly extending your network (see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145#) and otherwise strongly recommends a roaming network where Ethernet cable is used to connect two wireless base stations. However, I am in an apartment where stringing together two wireless base stations with Ethernet cable would have an extremely low wife acceptance factor (WAF). I cannot (both contractually and from a skill prospective) hide Ethernet wire in the walls or ceiling. And having visible Ethernet cable running from room-to-room would be unacceptable, especially to the wife.
    So what is left? Do you have a Plan B for me? Thanks in advance for your help!

    If the same website is opening each time you launch a browser (Safari?) hold down the shift key as you launch to prevent previous pages from opening.

    QoS means Quality of Service.  Basically it reorders or delays packets depending on priority, so that time-sensitive packets always go first, and unimportant packets like bittorrent can be delayed until there is no other traffic being sent.  What I specifally was suggesting here is that your use it to lower the priority of bittorrent traffic, so that you can run it all the time but it only uses spare bandwidth that isn't being used by any other service.
    The only catch most routers can only do QoS on inbound connections which is mainly helps latency and not download speeds.  However, if your router is running linux it may have that ability.  Also look for the 'tc' utility or maybe you can install trickle.

    Thank you, I have that working but it's not really what I need.
    Though pictures are worth a 1000 words so I hope someone will post something similar to my question.
    I have 7 - SB 302-08 switches with the most recent firmware. (updated firmware today, thanks to the video, and TG for the CLI)
    All 302's are configured for layer 3.
    This is my first experience with the SMB line of switches.
    I have a main office and several satellite branch offices.
    All locations are connected back with a "Q to Q" circuit on individual ports to a vendor supplied switch at the main office.
    I need to link all branch office 302 switches back to the main office 302 switch and allow traffic amongst them.
    Mainly traffic between each branch office and the main office.
    There maybe a future need to incorporate VoIP on them as well, but that is a back burner issue.
    These locations will have an individual VLAN and 302 switch but need to receive data from the main VLAN and possibly others.
    I have a "core" SB 302 setup at the main office with its own VLAN.
    Each branch switch has its own VLAN.
    I would also like to have a centralized management VLAN for the switches.
    In trying to configure the core 302 I keep losing connectivity and having to reset it.
    On the branch switches I end up getting them to only link to themselves with different IP's and not the core.
    I'm assuming this is caused by my not configuring interconnectivity using ACL.

    Well first you want to make sure you are running latest firmware 1.1.1.8 I do believe
    Next either console into the switch or you can turn on SSH/Telnet under Web gui (Security••àTCP/UDP services and make sure SSH/Telent is enabled)
    Now we configure the switch via Cli
    We need to enter global configuration mode.
    Configure Terminal
    (next add our vlans)
    Vlan database
    Vlan 10
    Vlan 20
    Vlan 30
    Exit
    (you can run show command to see your vlans)
    do show vlan
    (Now configure the port how you would like)
    Interface GE1
    Switchport mode access   (this is making Gigabit port 1 an access port)
    Switchport access vlan 20 (this command is changing access port vlan from 1 to 20)
    (less configure a trunk port)
    Interface GE2
    Switchport mode trunk (this makes port 2 for trunking)
    (Now less add our Vlans)
    Switchport trunk native vlan 1
    Switchport trunk allowed vlan add 10,20,30
    Exit global configuration
    (Use this command to copy your settings to startup)
    Copy running-config startup-config
    (Some screen shots attached)
    I see you have a WRT54G router which i don't think support vlans unless you have 3rd party OS installed.
    So currently is the SG300 swtich operating in layer 2 or layer 3 , guessing this is why you choose to move up to 300 series switch?
    If the switch is not in layer 3 mode but in layer2 when setting it to layer3 the switch will default all pervious settings.
    If the switch is set in layer 3 mode you might have forgot your default route
    (Command setting default route)
    configure terminal
    ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1  (192.168.1.1 being address of your WRT54G)
    Now you would need to set up ACL's to deny and allow what traffic you wanted to filter on the SG300
    Also reading your post we would need you to call into support center SBSC @ 1-866-606-1866
    This way we could get a better idea of your current configuration and assist with fixing or finding a solution for you.
