  • Randomly (Edit: when loading pages w/ lots of content: pics) losing connection to router (WRT54GC)

There's just too many threads about connectivity issues, so why not post another one I'm connected directly (cable) to my wireless WRT54GC router and sometimes I lose connection with the router. There are more than one computer connected to the router, when it happens, all computers lose connectivity. So yeah, router is the problem. It seems to happen randomly, about 15 times a day. Can't access the router. Then after a minute or so the connection comes back. It happens so often that I just power down the router then power it up right away and everything is back to normal. When it happens, lights on the router are flashing like everything was normal. Firmware: v1.05.7 Edit: title.

You are not alone.  My WRT54GC has been doing that since I got it.  I bought it for the 802.11G connectivity as I was using a D-Link with only 802.11b.  My house is wired but I have 2 laptops that are wireless, hence the switch to the faster wireless...  Anyway, I actually switched BACK to the D-Link for a time because I was so frustrated with the dropped connections (could ping the router, but router wasn't going out) on both my wired and wireless PCs.  This happened to me on every firmware version I've used with the WRT54GC.  1.05.7 happened the least, though I started avoiding the pages that caused it to drop.  It just happened again today while in a video call in Skype, which was a first.
So I feel your pain, and don't think anything but a new fixed firmware will help.  I've tried IP adjustments, MTU adjustments.  I am doing a MAC address clone, since my ISP still locks to my old P3 450MHz PC from when I first got broadband that I hardly use anymore.
So I, too, am looking for a fix.  I always thought Cisco/Linksys would be a safe bet...

Hey try resetting the router reset button in such a way that power
light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power
cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router &
then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are
solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out
    it will definately work!!
Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode
should be mixed- Provide any non linksys network name ....
Name (SSID) box- Set wireless channel to 11- And wireless SSID
broadcast should be Enabled and then click on "Save Settings" >>Now
Click on the Sub tab under wireless > "Wireless Security" Change the
Wireless security mode to "WEP/WPA"...have a note of the key ... click save settings ...  >>Click on Advanced Wireless
settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation

  • Mi router WRT54GC isn't working - Please urgent help

    Hi all,
I've bought this router on February and suddenly it has left working. I've tried to upgrade the firmware but the power led is now in orange (not blinking)......
Did I broke the router? How can I fix it?
    Thanks for you help!
    Killi

I'm not sure if this is a similar problem or not. For some reason my laptop is not finding my secure connection. It has been working fine and then all of a sudden it can't find the signal. Here is what works-Internet on my hardwired computer works. I can get on my neighbor's connection without problems. It will pull up my neighbor's signal before mine. I can't tell if there is a signal coming from the router or not. Everything seemed to be working great until recently.

  • Cannot conect router WRT54gc linksys router using windows 7

when I connect router correctly via modem I get message not connected no matter what I do I am convinced I am doing nothing wrong having used linksys router a number of times before about 2 years ago using XP cannot someone help before I climb the wall to throw myself off please I am now connected to router now to get on internet to this site help please wanted

Let me know the name of the ISP- means it’s a cable connection or a DSL connection? Do you get the internet connection when you connect the modem directly to the computer? If yes, what IP address do you get on the computer? To check the IP address that you are getting from the Router...
You can check the IP address in the following manner:
    # Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.
    # A black pop up box should come up, type: "ipconfig /all" …
There check the IP address and Default Gateway under LAN….

  • Compact wireless G- Broadband router WRT54GC

    Hey guys!
I'm trying to set up my wireless on my new HP laptop.
Problem is IE is not allowing me to open the 192.168.1.1 page to set it up.
    Anyone had this problem?
    Any solutions?
    thx

Oh and I forgot to mention adding 192.168.1.1 to allowed site plus unchecking the enabling protected mode in security settings in IE

  • WRT54GC Operation Mode: Router Or Gateway

The WRT54GC has two modes: Router and Gateway. What is the difference?
I'm trying to do the following and I'm not sure what mode I need for that
                                      /-->LAN1 (192.168.1.*)
    2WireModem/Router
                                      \-->WRT54GC-->LAN2 (192.168.2.*)
Note 1: LAN1 and LAN2 have different IP ranges.
Note 2: I tried router mode connecting the WAN port of the WRT54GC to a LAN port on the 2WireModem. The 2WireModem then complained that there is another router behind it. Why does it care?

As indicated in the graph I have changed the IP of the WRT54GC to 192.168.2.1. But what mode do I have to set it (router or gateway) to allow two separate LANs?
Also, the computers connected to the WRT54GC need to have internet access through router 1. Somebody told me I need a static IP for this. Is that correct?
    Thanks

  • WRT54GC v2.0 - UDP Traffic issue

Hi, i've bought last week the wireless router WRT54GC v2.0 and it works good for normal navigation, port forwarding, wireless signal, ecc...
I've only a problem, a big problem, it can't handle high UDP traffic, this issue can be experienced, e.g. with Kad network of eMule. I can connect to Kad and i'm not firewalled, but if i try to search something, the search results are always empty or almost empty. If i made the same search connecting with my ISP router it works fine.
I tried with both wireless and wired connection from WRT54GC and the result is the same, so it's not a wireless problem. I tried to disable firewall, playing with settings, using DMZ o port triggering. The result was the same. I've updated the firmware to version 1.01.0 too.
Is there a solution for this problem??
    Sorry for my english

I am not sure about the workwround ... however you can try filtering the UDP packets that are incoming .....

  • Can't access router configuration

I have a wireless router WRT54GC.  It worked fine until I got a new linker.  Now I can neither connect wirelessly from my laptop (although the laptop says the connection is fine).  Nor can I access the router configuration; the URL for the configuration program has changed since the new linker was installed, and I can ping it  successfully, but via browser does not connect.  Hard to do much without getting to the router configuration.

When you are trying to setup page of your Router are you getting any kind of error message?
Try to Disable the Firewall and Antivirus on your Router and then check if you are able to access the setup page of your Router, If still not then you can Hardwired a different computer to the router and then try to login to the setup page of your router, if still doesn't work then you can unplug the power from the router, wait for 30sec and then replug the power to the linksys router and then check if you are able to access the setup page of your router.
If still you are unable to access the setup page of your Router then you can Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • WRT54GC connection problem

I got my router WRT54GC for a year now. It works as a gateway - I split my internet connection for 2 wireless computers. One is PC with Linksys Wireless-G USB Adapter and second is HP laptop. For first few months everything worked very nicely. But since last few months router is causing problem. One problem. Often, after computer restart or waking up from sleep mode - it doesn't connect. Both on PC and laptop. Both computers can find router's signal and it's always strong. But trying to connect just doesn't give any effects. Router broadcasts SSID properly but seems like it doesn't react at all when computers are trying to connect. My Wireless-G adapter says "Cannot associate with access point" or something like that. Same thing with laptop although it doesn't use any adapter as it has own wireless network card inside. Only thing that helps is unplugging router from power and turning it on back. Then it connects immediatelly. I tried changing many settings in router configuration but nothing seems to work. I've gone out of ideas lately so I finally decided to ask here. I hope you'll give me working solution.

Seems like the firmware of the router needs to be updated. To do this, connect your laptop to router using ethernet cable, go to www.linksys.com/download and from this download latest firmware of your router, and save it on your computer.
Have a look at the file, it sould be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file.
Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name.
Go to administartion tab there. Go to fimware update sub-tab there. Browse for the firmware image file and click update. When update completes turn off modem & router. After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router.
After updating firmware the problem should get solved.

  • Router security question

    Hi,
I have recently connected a Linksys router (WRT54GC) via ethernet cables between my cable modem and my iMac C2D.
Also, I connected an iMac G3 (upstairs) to that router via ethernet wall-plug adapters.
Basically, this wireless router is being used as a wired router or ethernet hub.
I did not configure the iMacs or the router. I just plugged everything into the appropriate ports and it works. I have NOT tried to connect wirelessly, nor is AirPort turned on in my iMac C2D.
My question is: am I still vulnerable to someone connecting to my computers wirelessly through the Linksys? Should I configure the router for security protection?
I'm afraid to touch anything because it actually works!
Any advice on this matter would be appreciated.
    Phillip

If you've set up the router with a decent password and turned-off SSID broadcasts, then it's unlikely someone will be able to access your network via the wireless access.
However, if it's running with an out-of-the-box config, then it's a possibility.

  • WRT54GC UK Version 2

Hi, I am having a problem with my router, WRT54GC V2, it keeps 'loosing' connection to the cable modem. Every so often the send and receive lights on the modem go off and come back on after a 30 or so seconds.
I have checked the modem by connecting it to my laptop via an RJ45 cable and it works flawlessly.
I have updated the router firmware. Reset the router. Complimented its design and still it doesn't want to work for me.
It seems to be worse when I download anything e.g 4 on demand, flyff (yesterday) or anything on itunes.
Is there anything anybody knows about this problem with a soloution, please? I am in the UK.

My connection to the router DOES NOT DROP. It is the modem and the router that has communication issues. Gawd I explained this in my post!!

  • Router disconnects when moving to another room

I recently set up my new compact router (WRT54GC) yesterday and have mainly use my HP notebook in my living room about 2m from the router.
However, as soon as i move my notebook into my study, the connection is lost and i cannot connect back to the network despite the signal being "Excellent". The distance between my study and the position of the router is not far at all however there is only 1 wall between it.
I dont understand if the signal is Excellent then why doe the connection disconnect?

There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless speed by switching from WEP to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.
