Routers, Macs and PCs

First off, I am sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, if it's in the wring place, and also for the lack of knowledge that I have.
I have an iMac and a Macbook (rather recent, the iMac with Snow Leopard and the Macbook with Leopard, 10.5.8+), and in the same home, there are about two other PC's, one of which is nearly always on.
Our internet is... lacking. Due to my inexperience with networks and the internet, all I can decipher from our problem is that we cannot all connect to the internet using the same router. The Wireless disconnects regularly and whenever someone turns a system on that uses the internet, everyone else gets booted off the network.
What I want to know is, If I got an Airport (of any type), will the problem be (more or less) solved?
We have tried everything we can to solve the problem, but its constantly being blamed on my poor Mac systems, so I need to find a way to solve the issue.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.

Please describe in detail your networking equipment, including brands and model numbers for the modem and router, if these are separate devices.
Your comment that "everyone else gets booted off the network" may suggest that in certain ways you can connect more than one device to the Internet at the same time. Is this true? In general a router will support multiple users, but there seems to be at least one ISP that only allows one client at a time.

  • IPod 5G: Disk use on both Macs and PCs.

    Greetings,
I have an iMac and iPod. I have selected option "Enable Disk Use" in iTunes.
When using iPod as a external disk on my iMac,all works ok.
Problem is when I plug my iPod into a PC. The PC shows an error message: "The disk in drive F is not formated. Do you want to format it now?". Is this how is supposed to be? How can I use iPod as an external disk when PC doesn't recognize it? Can someone explain this? I know that there are different formating for Macs and PCs, but since I am connecting via USB, it should not be a problem. I am connecting my memory card reader/writer (via USB) to both PCs and Mac and it works. The same is with my digital camera, works on both platforms. And what is even more strange, when I restore iPod on PC and sync in iTunes on PC, with enabling disk use, I can use it on both platforms.
Thank you in advance for replies,
    JK

It is because your iPod is formatted in Mac format which Window machines can not read (regardless if you are using USB or not; it does matter).
If you reformatted the iPod for Windows, then you can use it on both systems since Macs can read Windows formatted iPod just fine.

  • Combining PDFs from MACs and PCs

Is there a way to effortless combine fairly large pdfs created on MACs and on PCs (usually containing images and tables)? We have had terrible problems with this, including image  and caption distortion, etc. Sometimes, we are unable to create pdfs on a PC if we are sent a Word document created on a MAC.
Any advise could be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

If I print to PDF, nothing at all happens.
If I try to do a Save As, I get the following message:
“The export failed. The document could not be prepared for exporting.”
If I right click on the file name and use Convert to Adobe PDF, it will start the process and then stop and return to the Word document.

  • Networking with macs and pcs mixed

Is it possible for me to:
    1. take an old PC with a huge hard drive in, wipe it clean and install Leopard onto it to use as a simple server?
    2. network it for a home office of 4 computers (2 macs, 2 pcs)?
I've never done networking before-is this possible?
    Thanks

    1. take an old PC with a huge hard drive in, wipe it clean and install Leopard onto it to use as a simple server?
If by "PC" you mean non-Apple hardware, no. Mac OS X only runs on Apple's systems.
    2. network it for a home office of 4 computers (2 macs, 2 pcs)?
If you run Leopard on a Mac, yes, you can have up to ten systems connect to it, both Windows systems and Macs.

  • Drive use between MAcs and PCs

    Hello,
I hope this is the right place for this query... I would like to extract a hard drive from a Sony laptop that is one year old (just out of warrantee and Sony won't fix it!) and hook it up to my MACBook or MAC Pro to delete data or reformat to destroy sensitive data before giving it to some student who think they can fix the thing... Can I access the data with my MAC and reformat it to whatever format (MAC or other does not matter as long as the data is gone)?
Thanks for help with this... Floor
P.S. I tried to access USB drives with my work Windows based laptop and failed (could not see it in the Explorer while I could eject it - failing to would bring up the message of possible data corruption.. Is that normal? Or are these drives interchangeable with the latest windows PCs (my work laptop uses Windows 2000, yes I know Barney Flintstone probably owned it one day).

If the drive is formatted Windows NT, your Mac will be able to read the files on the drive, but you will not be able to change the files in any way, including dragging them to the trash. To delete the files, reformat the drive using Disk Utility. Be sure to click on the security options button and select "Zero Out Data." Otherwise, someone will still be able to recover your data from the drive.

  • Connecting macs and pcs together through airport express

i have had my first mac ibook for just over a week and have also bought an airport express thingy. my daughter has a windows pc laptop. is it possible to connect them both through the airport express so we have a wireless connection to each? i am pretty new to the whole apple mac and wireless business and dont understand about settings and putting codewords and numbers into the boxes that might pop up.
    anne

    Hi Anne,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
By connecting them you mean to have them both receive signal from the Airport Express to access the internet rather then make a connection for file sharing.
If that is the question, Yes you can. The easiest way of doing this is to set it up on the iBook G4 using Airport Setup Assistant. It will walk you, or your daughter through setting up the Airport Express. You want to assign it a password and your basically done except for your Windows PC. Does your Windows PC have a wireless card? Can you access the internet already? What you are going to need to do in order to connect to it is to join the network like you would any wireless network. I am not a Windows user (I try not to use them as much as possible), so I can't really help you with the Windows aspect of it.
You can also setup the Airport Express using your Windows PC, but I think it would be easier on the Mac.

  • File sharing between Macs and PCs

I'm not able to properly network a Mac and a PC laptop in my office. The Mac is running 10.4.9, the PC is running XP Service Pack 2. Here's what I'm doing:
I right-click on a Windows folder. On the "Sharing" tab I click on "Share this folder on the network."
I go over to the Mac. I try to browse the network; the PC doesn't show up. I type command-K, type in smb://[my PC name] into the box. A dialog box pops up indicating that it's trying to connect, but nothing happens.
Similarly, if I turn on Windows File Sharing on the Mac and try to go the other way (access the Mac from the PC), that doesn't work either.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks very much.
    G5 Dual 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I am having a similar problem getting onto a Windows network with my Mac.
    I select Finder/Go/Connect to server...
I then enter my server's address, and click on the "connect" button. I get the "connecting to server" dialog box. Then I get the "SMB/CIFS File System Authentication" dialog box. The "Workgroup or Domain" box already is filed in with the proper name, so it appears to me that I have made contact with the server. The "name" box shows up filled in with my .mac name, so I delete it and type in my Windows user name. I then fill in my Windows password, and click on the "OK" button.
Then the "connecting to server" dialog box reads "could not connect to the server because the name or password is incorrect."
I am using the same name and password that I use when I get on the netowrk with my Dell. In fact, I will plug the ethernet cable into my Dell and get onto the network. I then log off, switch the cable to my MacBook Pro, and I cannot get on.
Any thoughts on why the server is sending my MacBook Pro the "wrong name or password" message, but letting my Dell on?

  • How can I get Macs and PCs to share files on same network?

I have a 2009 iMac running Mavericks and a Macbook Pro retina also on Mavericks.   I also have a desktop running Windows 7 Pro and a laptop on Windows 8.1.   I have a cable modem (Comcast) with multiple ethernet jacks and a WIFI modem.   The Macs see each other on the network but the PCs don't always see each other and do not see the Macs.   Can someone run me thru the basics on networking so I can share files?    Thank you.
    Mark

    Arthur,
Thanks for the link.   It is a good starting point.   Part of my problem is that I do not understand file sharing protocols on the PC side.   The Mac sharing "just works."   I keep getting issues with permissions, or, on some days,  the PC just does not show up on my finder.   Let me take a look at the link and try some things and I will report back.

  • Linking files between Macs and PCs in InDesign

I'm Mac, my colleagues are PC.
They have removed the letter mapping from their server links to enable me and them to share InDesign files seemlessly. This works perfectly until an Indesign file draws graphics from two (or more) seperate servers. In this case, Indesign for me can only draw links from the server in which the file is saved. All graphics from the other server appear broken.
I'm sure PCs and Macs co-existing isn't rare. And I'm sure using graphics from multiple servers also isn't rare. How do I get around this problem?
    Many thanks,
    Nicola

  • How I export from HDV to SD (DVD)... What about HD versions suitable for Macs and Pcs?

    Hi,
I have just finished editing a short movie based on some high res stills combined with some 1080i HDV footage.
After completing the edit in CS4 (in a HDV 1080i environment) I went through Adobe Media Encoder in order to downsize and converting into an m2v file ready for my Encore project.
As you probably well know this is far from satisfactory in terms of the down sampling capabities shown by AME as well as the lack of proper colour conversion.
So, after giving up on the Dan Isaacs method, AVI synth didnt seem friendly to this user... as well as the inability of CS4 to frameserve..
My solution was to exported the Microsoft AVI using the HUFFYUV codec at 100% - With Progressive scan, when ever I interlaced my output it showed obvious interlacing in my player, odd or even fields first...
I then used VirtualDub to do the down sizing
Finally Procoder 3 to convert to m2v.
The results still have no proper colour conversion properties but look much sharper than the regular CS4 encode using AME
OK, that took an eternity to discover and still leaves me with another problem.
I want to export straight from CS4 to media type that can be played on both PC and Macs in HD.
Before I go down another gruop of dead ends and trial and error discoveries, could anyone here suggest a recomended and successful workflow?
       Many thanks,
    Phil.

let me see if I can help out a little here.
The problem with converting 1080i to SD in software is that FCP seems to do a not-very-good job of downsampling the image, particularly when you are going directly to DV. Details get blurry, and other compression artifacts become quite noticeable. I have also experienced trouble with the HDV fields not getting processed correctly if I go to SD mpeg directly from an HDV timeline or movie file.
Your best bet is one of the following workflows:
Export a 1080i HDV or AIC movie file and re-import to FCP. Place this clip into an anamorphic SD sequence. It doesn't matter if the sequence is DV or Uncompressed if you send the sequence directly to Compressor from FCP, because this will ignore any rendered material and use an uncompressed image buffer as it encodes the mpeg. Do not letterbox your widescreen video if you are going to DVD - widescreen DVD video should always be full-frame anamorphic.
Your other option is to attempt to use Compressor to down-res the sequence or a self-contained movie of your HDV, starting with one of the advnace format conversion presets in Compressor. However, you'll have to cutstomize the preset by turning on the frame controls, and testing the settings to make sure you are happy with the result. Turning on frame controls will increase the ratio of your encoding time anywhere from 4 to 20:1.
I have tried all of these methods, and none of them look as good as capturing the downconverted video from the deck after mastering to HDV tape.
    Hope this helps -

  • Color Consistency Across Macs and PCs?

We have an encoding and creative workflow that is entirely mac/FC Studio base, but authoring is done on a PC.
We have run into a very peculiar problem involving color shifting...
M2Vs and Still Images (Tiffs) are exported from Motion Projects using Compressor. The last frame of the m2v is identical to the Still Image.
When opened in quicktime the colors appear identical.
When brought into DVD studio pro and Authored, the jump from the M2V to the Still Image is seamless in terms of color.
Now when that M2V and Still Image is brought into our PC authoring Software, there is a noticeable shift in color between the two. The still image is significantly darker than the M2V. (A HUGE PROBLEM)
So the above is based on exporting a still image and an M2v from Motion Projects, what if we simply exported the last frame of the M2V from quicktime or compressor as a still image. SAME EXACT RESULTS.
Next I brought the M2V into After Effects and Exported the last frame as a Tiff. In DVD Studio Pro that Tiff appears significantly BRIGHTER than the M2V, but when brought over to our PC there is NO shift at all!!
For a number of reason our workflow can not accommodate a dependency on After Effects to provide us with color consistent Still Images for our PC Authoring Software.
Is there anyone out there, a guru in the ways of color management perhaps, that can lend some insight into how I can ensure that the Still Images I export from Quicktime/Final Cut Studio will not display a shift in color from the M2Vs on the PC?
    Thank you so much,
    ryan

    Ryan,
Your issue is primarily related to gamma, and also related to color space conversion issues. If you search these very forums, and google, you will find extensive threads discussing this.
Managing gamma in a FCS-based post workflow that involves still images, multiple platforms, and multiple color spaces, requires special attention.
The various applications inside FCS deal with gamma and color spaces in different ways. There are a LOT of intricacies, from Final Cut's bypassing of ColorSync, to default gamma settings for RGB content, to DVDSP's handling of still image color space conversion. You'll need to sit down and spend some time building the knowledge you'll need to navigate the waters.
Start with these links, and go from there:
    http://www.poynton.com/notes/colourandgamma/GammaFAQ.html
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93794
    http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7384256
    http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=23956
The very short version of your problem is related to the fact that Mac uses a default display gamma of 1.8, and just about everything else in the world related to your video pipeline (including your PC) uses 2.2 to 2.5. It's more complex than that, but the links above will get into detail.
On the bright side, your problem is completely solvable once you learn the gamma side of things, and carefully maintain proper gamma from start to finish in the workflow.

  • Sharing the Internet with Macs and PCs

    Hi there.
I have a brand new Airport Extreme router working fantastically with my iMac. My roommate is on a PC and has a d-link DWA 130 USB wireless network adapter. I have a broadband cable connection set up via DHCP. If the network is set up without a password (as it is when you first connect the base to the modem), she can connect to the network without any issues.
When I set up the network with a WEP password to keep the connection from being public, she can still see the network in the d-link connection manager. She will then input the correct password but nothing will happen. In short, when I secure our connection, she gets hosed.
My question is, what can I do to solve this problem? I've tried everything on her end (I think). Is there a setting or two I should be concerned with on my end?
    Thanks, and take it easy

If possible use WPA instead of WEP. That is more secure and is more compatible among devices.
If the D-Link adapter isn't WPA compatible, you may need the WEP equivalent network password. See KB 106864, AirPort Extreme: Getting an equivalent network password.
