Routing MIDI data out of Ultrabeat

Hello
Can anyone please tell me if MIDI data can be routed out of Ultrabeat, so that its sequencer can be used to control cells in Battery 3, for instance. I'm a novice in the Environment and I haven't been able to find anyway of doing this. I know about dragging Ultrabeat patterns onto Arrange tracks to be used by other instruments but its not quite the same, obviously.
If it can't be done, I wonder if its the sort of feature that Apple might include in a future update. It seems to me that to combine the sequencer functions of Ultrabeat with the advanced sample-editing functions of Battery would address the limitations of each instrument and create an ideal system for step-sequencing drums. I can't be the first person to have thought of this but I haven't been able to find anything out about it so far. I would be grateful for any advice.
William

Nope.
AU plugins, including Logic's own instruments, cannot output any MIDI data at all - the AU spec doesn't currently support this.
The only thing you can do is export out the patterns into arrange regions, then reassign. But you can't use Ultrabeat's sequencer to trigger another instrument live.

  • I can record midi data from my Mason & Hamlin Piano Disc Pro Record through my MOTU Traveller into Logic but Logic won't send midi data out to the MOTU Traveller to the Piano Disc player

    Hello All,
I can record midi data from my Mason & Hamlin Piano Disc Pro Record through my MOTU Traveller into Logic Pro 9.1.8  but Logic won't send the midi data back out to the MOTU Traveller and thus to the Piano Disc player. I got it to playback one time but have no idea how and when it did it was looping or something because the velocity was way high coming back in and the damper pedal was slamming down. When I play a key on the piano the midi "in" light on the Traveller lights up. When I play the track back on my computer no lights blink on the Traveller and when I did the apple midi studio test in utilities when I play a key I get the confirmation signal noise and the Traveller blinks when I click on the down arrow of the Traveller in the Apple midi studio test the midi out light on the traveller never lights and the signal light on the piano does not blink either. No outbound signal at all...
I have messed with every possible parameter I can find and and have had help from one of Piano Disc's premier editors but no luck. The piano was prepped for me on Logic so it would work with my studio.  I'm positive it's my fault and I'm overlooking something really simple and stupid but what!??!
Somebody please help.  Thank you all in advance for ANY ideas you might have!

    Blues Piano,
I'm not sure if this will be a help or not.  I'm so Logic Pro wet behind the ears that I make newbies look experienced.  However, I'm not expecting many on the Apple support forums have a PianoDisc system, much less one with the new optical record strip.  While I don't have any record strip on my PianoDisc, I do have a PianoDisc iQ that's only a month old.  I've been playing converted paper scrolls from hundred year old player pianos through it via the MIDI in port of the PianoDisc CPU.  I've found I have to open the MIDI file in Logic Pro (10.0.4) then go to <Track><New External MIDI Track> then copy the existing track to that new external track.  Only then can I see in the Track inspector (defaults left side of screen with the Icon for the instrument) the "Port" parameter.  Then I can select my external MIDI device in that Port selector.
I've also encountered problems with the PianoDisc not using enough force on the notes or using too much force.  To get around this problem, until I understand Logic better, I've been setting minimum and maximum volicities.  To do that I right click on the track and select "Select All."  Then I right click again and select "MIDI" then "MIDI Transform"  then "Velocity Limiter."  In the resulting pop up window in the center is a drop down and you can play with the velocity from "MIN" to "MAX" along with "ADD" "SUBTRACT" etc.
I hope this helps.  I envy you your Mason & Hamlin.  If you need more help on this just email me at pfleischmann at mac dot com.

  • Is there a way to import midi data BACK into ultrabeat?

I'm sitting here arranging a new song, programming all the drums into ultrabeat.  I clicked on the drum sounds, expecting to keep everything that I've worked on - when to my surprise I realized it went back to every sample pattern.
I have some sections already pasted into the arrange window - and yes, i can just copy them and move forward, but i haven't tweaked anything yet, and all the drums are the same volume blah blah blah.  Is there anyway to import a segment from the arrange window that were created with ultrabeat BACK into ultrabeat?

    No.
But you haven't lost anything.  Velocities/grid placement can easily be adjuted in the piano roll.  The volume in UB's mixer, as well as any of the voices parameters don't care if UB is running it's sequencer or playing notes from a region.  Unless you are programming step automation ("yellow mode").

  • How to Send realtime MIDI CC data out of VI's (IAC bus?)

    Hello everyone!
Im in need of some help/advice.. (Tried posting this in another help forum with no luck so trying here)
Does  anybody know if it is possible to send 'Realtime' Midi CC data out of a Virtual Instrument used in Logic X and out of my MIDI port?
EG: Turning the Cutoff knob in EXS24 and sending the cc data out of my Midi interface's OUT port?
Im  hoping there is a way to somehow achieve this using the IAC Bus and  virtual cabling somehow to my Unitor 8 midi interface located in the  Audio Midi Setup section in OSX.. Or am i dreaming?
(There is no way to assign a Midi OUT destination with a VI from what i can see. Or is there?)
Really appreciate any help at all.
    Thanks

Smoke wrote: You see, i would love to do what you said (above) and plug the Midi controller straight into the MPC and do it that way, but there is a simple problem.. The Midi Controller i want to buy, only sends MIDI out of a USB connection (no physical midi output port) which my MPC will not accept, only Midi cables.
Strange. You intend to use your MPC as your sequencer yet you want buy a MIDI controller that only has a USB port? In your situation I would buy something with both 5pin DIN connectors and USB. It only makes sense.
Smoke wrote: So! Correct me if i am wrong but the simple solution to this would be to:
    1) Plug this midi controller into my mac via USB and "Learn" Logic's VI's with the Controller's assignments
    2) Somehow, assign the Midi Controller to send to one of my Unitor 8's Midi Out port which will be connected to my MPC.. (This way, all those CC's i transmit will ALSO be sent out to my MPC )
    3) When i play back my MPC, its going to play the VI's just how i tweaked the knobs on that Midi controller.
Do you see any problem with me achieving # 2?? (it should be possible to do that in the Environment right?)
If this is all possible, then my question/objective is all solved thanks to you
No, that won't work. Once you make the assignments with the Launch Control, the VI's will only respond to messages coming from the Launch Control.
A workaround would be to hijack the Launch Control's port using Midipipe (freeware) so that Logic doesn't even see it, then route the Launch Control's data out of Midipipe via one of Unitor's output ports so that it reaches the MPC. The data would then go through the MPC and back to Logic via one of the Unitor's input ports. You would make the assignments with this data (data coming in from that Unitor port).

  • Incoming MIDI data from unassociated devices still gets sent out in 2.1.3

The problem I have reported numerous times for previous versions of MainStage is still present in 2.1.3.
An incoming MIDI CC value that is NOT associated with a device is being sent to other channel strips. Last night before rehearsal, I added a Minimoog XL into my rig. It's connected via its own MIDI port on a MOTU 128 Express. I discovered that when I turned the Vol control on the Minimoog, it sent out CC 7 and CC 39 (LSB values for volume) messages to a channel strip associated with a VocalLive voice processor and had absolutely NOTHING to do with the Minimoog.
As reported before, this also happens for CC80 and CC81 and I cannot see any reason why such events would get sent out to other channel strips if there is no explicit mapping defined.
I had to add in new dummy knobs to explicitly block these values, further polluting my layout, which is already full of knobs defined just for blocking stuff.
A generic MIDI device set to listen on all inputs and MIDI channels with output blocked does NOT stop this from happening.
More details are in these older threads:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/12572359#12572359 and with more detail (including how to reproduce) at
https://discussions.apple.com/message/15483068#15483068 is still present in 2.1.3
(I've already submitted this at the feedback link (which, by the way, has no entry for 2.1.3 in it) but I am quite pessimistic about this getting fixed, it has survived many versions of MainStage....I don't understand why)
    This is so disappointing.

That's partially why I'm so concerned about this --- I cannot conceive of a scenario where this behavior makes any sense --- essentially some external synth can generate arbitrary MIDI data which just goes out through other channels, and that data is at best of no interest and at worst can actually screw up the receiving device (which happened to me when my Korg Oasys was sending out CC80/CC81 as part of a program change and it was changing a parameter on my Minimoog)
It seems to me that they could have fixed this quite easily by providing (perhaps an extended version of) a MIDI Device that REALLY blocks everything so users with the problem could just throw that one gadget into the layout instead of having to make a bunch of knobs to block all sorts of things.

  • Multi-Outs with Ultrabeat problem

I'm new to Logic, but I have an instance of Ultrabeat set up with all the drums properly routed to different Auxilliary channels. They respond correctly when triggered from my midi keyboard. I created a midi clip on the Main track, double clicked it and went into the piano roll to do some programming. The problem: If I click in a note, it plays correctly. If I click on the piano roll key for that note, it sounds right. If I press play, the same notes will play the sound from the key just beneath it. It also won't start playback immediately. You don't hear anything for the first 3 or 4 notes in the piano roll during playback. Can anyone shed some light on this. I've been trying to make sense out of Logic's way of dealing with multi-outs for a few days and it seems like the implementation is just very wrong. I'm starting to feel like I'm gonna have to do drumming elsewhere then import it into Logic. Would be a shame since ultrabeat is a very good sounding drum synth.

No I didn't look at "environments" in general at all until today. I'd honestly bought Logic with the hopes that I'd never have to touch an environment, but that's not correct. Today I dug into understanding environments and while I don't know a lot, I do understand the concept. Simply put, you can't have anything in a song file that hasn't been pre-configured in the environment. That explains a great deal about Logic and how it's a world apart from Cubase, what I've been using for years.
The piano roll thing was a freaky glitch that corrected itself when I closed and reopened the file. But I'm glad that you confirmed the latency thing with these plugins. Logic is so complicated that when things don't behave as expected, I may never look in the right place for the right answer.
I've been literally practicing setting up multi-outs on Ultrabeat and EXS24 for hours today. What a nightmare. This is something that I normally did on the fly in any song file, but in Logic, these things definately need to be pre-configured or the distraction is much too great. The great thing about Logic though is that I find that I'm doing very little mixing as I go along because everything sounds so good right from the start. Trying to make sound sit properly in a mix, or just getting them to sound "good" was the thing that normally distracted me. Logic solves that problem, but I'm gonna have to spend a great deal of time poking around Logic before I can be truly productive with it. But when it's all set up and ready, I think I will begin to rule the world.

  • Problem with Updating of Routing Master data

    Hi,
My requirement is I have to download Routing Master data into excel sheet. Once downloading is over, user can change some fields data in excel sheet. Again u’ll upload the changed excel sheet data to SAP. Finally these changes will effect to  the Routing Master data.
I am  downloaded routing master data using FM ‘CARO_ROUTING_READ’.
I changed some fields in excel sheet. I tried so many FM’s for updating the routing master data, but system not allow to me to change the Master data.
    I tried with ‘CP_BD_DIRECT_INPUT_PLAN’,
                 ‘CP_BD_DIRECT_INPUT_PLAN_EXT’,
                 ‘CP_BT_PLPO_UPDATE’, for updating Routing Master.
    And  Standard program RCPTRA02 also.
Please send me one function module which can update the Routing Master data. But that FM have the same structure of CARO_ROUTING_READ. Otherwise type conflicts will come.
System throws error ‘YOU CANNOT  EDIT TASK LIST OBJECTS WITH ACTIVITY TYPE&’.

    Hi,
I have found in OSS the following programs to download and upload routings:
    - Note 107242: You can create the sequential input file with report RCPDIRO1
    - Note 106965: Direct input routings: reading datasets
Maybe this can help you to upload your routings in another way. Unfortunately I haven't figured out yet how the program exactly works. So if somebody can give me some info about that one, it would be great.
    Thanks,

  • Yamaha DGX-620 MIDI data not being received by Mac

I've just spent the past five hours tearing my hair out attempting to make my DGX-620 Portable Grand 'talk' to my computer. I have a 2008 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro (not the unibody model, obviously) running OS X 10.6.8.
I have recently taken the wooden stand off my DGX keyboard so as to put the keyboard on a desk instead. BEFORE I DID THIS, MIDI data was sent and received effortlessly by the DGX and the MBP respectively, via an A-to-B USB cable (A in the computer, B in the DGX). I see no reason why the removal of such materials should affect the keyboard's functionality (after all, the stand is just comprised of wood, right? No electronics to be seen).
After I came across this infuriating hiccup, I began the laborious process of uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for the DGX (both version 1.3.2: http://download.yamaha.com/search/detail/?site=se.yamaha.com&language=sv&categor y_id1=16277&category_id2=16084&product_id=105576&asset_file_language=EN&asset_id =57163). The keyboard was unplugged for the whole process. I rebooted the computer and opened System Preferences - sure enough, there was the Yamaha USB/MIDI preference pane. I turned on the DGX with crossed fingers - and my efforts had been fruitless, much to my annoyance.
Anybody who can shed light on this issue (or point out a ditzy mistake I've made) will elate me and lift my spirits. Sorry, I can't really give any other rewards.
    Many thanks in advance,

  • Midi data doesn't appear in region after recording on a track

I'm using an Alesis SR-16 to trigger Logic drum samples.  All seems well as I record on a software track, as I hear the part I'm playing and actually see midi data being transcribed onto the region in the track.  However, after hitting stop, there's no data visible at all in the region.  It's just a blank box.  If I hit play, I hear the track fine, and if I open the piano roll, the data is all there.  This is not a problem with the CAPS keyboard.  Any thoughts?  Can't figure out why it all works fine except for this strange glitch.  I'm on Snow Leopard, ps.

    The Popper wrote:
This seemed logical, so I experimented with all sorts of zoom settings.  I can't see the midi data.  And - why would the CAPS keyboard work just fine with a similar part and software intstrument?
At the bottom lower right of the arrange page are the two zoom sliders... move the horizontal one to the right and the vertical one down until the SR-16 track fills the screen..... nothing?
I have/had (haven't looked lately) an SR16 and ages ago recorded every pattern into Logic. I just remember the notes being very short. That's the only thing I think it could be. As I recall you can open the Piano Roll use Apple/A to select all notes... add length to the notes and then they can be seen in the arrange.
Caps Lock key recording is different than a MIDI input recording from third party hardware... apples and oranges.

  • Why is my midi data not showing up on Logic Pro X?

So i've been working on this project for a while now and for some reason out of no where the midi data is not showing up. every time i click on a region, it doesn't open up the midi data for that track, but instead only opens up the data for a different track. No matter what region i try to open, it always goes to that one specific region, and if i try to click in notes it only puts them in on that region. furthermoer, the MIDI draw refuses to work. it will not let me pitch bend, change note velocities, or anything. Am i missing something obvious or what?? please help, this is one of my favorite projects so far and I don't want to trash it because i can't do anything with it.

Just happened to me. Then realized that I had clicked the "link" button off in the Piano Roll Editor and clicking it back on fixed it.

  • Roland MC500 into logic - setting tempo for imported midi data

My mate has an Roland MC500, where he's programmed multi-tracked midi info for songs etc, and we've sussed how to import the channels into separate regions in logic.
We've set the tempo as per the tempo on the MC500, but after importing the track, after a certain length of time the tempo goes out of sync. All the midi data has come across, and when assigning soft-synths etc it plays fine, but just moves out of tempo.
Is there a way that, when you have imported midi data in this way, you can ask logic to confirm/set the tempo?
I've had a read thru the manuals etc, but may have missed where it describes that bit?
    Thanks for any advice.
    andy

    yes...
you need to set the MC500 to send the MMC over its MIDI outs... than in Logic you must set th sync "Blue button"
the picture shows MTC but if you scroll down the menu you will find MMC settings... that must be turned ON on Logic settings Synchronization.
Logic must be setted as Slave... because Roland device is the slower one!

  • Concerning midi data in GarageBand for iOS: can we copy midi data from one virtual instrument to another?

Concerning midi data in GarageBand for iOS: can we copy midi data from one virtual instrument to another?
For instance: I play my "lucky take" on the virtual piano, and now I am curious how it would sound on let's say a organ. Normally I would select the midi content out of the piano track and copy it into the organ track. I cannot figure out how to do this in GarageBand for iOS. Is there anyone out there with a solution?
    Thanks!

It is limited, how you can move regions between tracks. Basically, you can move between tracks with the same touch instrument.  See the help: http://help.apple.com/garageband/ipad/2.0/index.html#chsec12c15d
    Move a region
Drag the region left or right to move it forward or back in time. Align the left edge of the region with the bar or beat on the ruler where you want it to start playing.
Drag the region up or down to move it to another track with the same Touch Instrument. You can also drag regions between Keyboard and Sampler tracks, and between Audio Recorder and Guitar Amp tracks. Smart Drums regions cannot be dragged to another Smart Drums track.
If you move a region so that it overlaps another region, the overlapped part of the “covered” region is deleted.
    Paste a region
You can paste a region you have copied, or paste an audio file from an app that supports copying audio to the clipboard. GarageBand supports 44.1 kHz sample rate, 16-bit depth uncompressed audio files.
You can paste copied regions to another track with the same Touch Instrument. You can also paste regions between Keyboard and Sampler tracks, and between Audio Recorder and Guitar Amp tracks. Smart Drums regions cannot be pasted to another Smart Drums track. Audio files copied from another app can be pasted to Audio Recorder or Guitar Amp tracks.
Move the playhead to the point where you want the region to start.
Tap the header of the track where you want to paste the region to select the track.
Tap the track where you want to paste the region, then tap Paste. You can also tap an empty area of Tracks view, then tap Paste. In this case the region is pasted into the currently selected track.

  • How do I assign multiple midi in/out ports???

Help...I have x2 midi keyboards and want to send midi data from each one to x2 separate devices/software instruments, ie Stylus RMX & Absynth thru separate midi in ports. I have a Tascam FW1884 which has x4 midi in/out ports. How do I do this? I've tried messing around in the environment but to no avail. Ideally when I play keyboard 1, midi is sent to Stylus and not recieved in absynth. I know I could use separate midi channels for this but would like to preserve these for additional midi controller data etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm having to revert back to cubase SE for the time being as its far easier to do: (

Some devices can support this, I have a hands free car kit that recieves my voice audio and I have the calls sound come through my bluetooth ear piece..  What I did was setup both devices and then went into bluetooth settings page and press one device at a time and select the the option menu, from here you usually see the supported connections for device.
Mine shows Phone and Audio and on ear piece I set to "Audio" and select my Jabra car kit and remove all checks but audio "Phone"...  By doing this I can hear through the bluetooth ear piece and use the hands-free mic to conversation..

  • Routing MIDI through Reaktor

    Hello All,
I was wondering if any one could help me with the following problem. I would like to be able to manipulate MIDI data in Reaktor before it enters logic. (Specifically, I use a reaktor patch that tunes incomeing note pitch data, 64 turns into 64.35, for example. The microtonal tunings in Logic are o.k., but I would like to be able to have multiple midi tracks with multiple different tunings, as well as microtonal scales that don't repeat at the octave).
I guess ideally what I would like is for MIDI data from Logic's sequencer to pass through a Reaktor patch before being sent to the various EXSP24 instruments that I use. Is this at all possible? I have been playing around in the environment window for the last 2 days, and, not being particularly intellegent when it come to computers, have been unable to make any progress.
Does IAC bus exist anymore? I thought that might lead to a possible solution. I have seen references to it in this forum, but cant find it anywhere in Logic or Reaktor?
    Thanks

The MIDI signal isn't adjusted... it's not a signal. MIDI is only small amounts of data, like what note your played, how long it's held down...etc. It has nothing to do with a common audio signal.
The signal strength is your keyboard's volume control and a control somewhere on the MOTU unit or in the software panel the MOTU installs, have you opened that up yet? It's probably in the Applications folder.
The first page of this article gives an adequate description of what's going over your MIDI cable.
    http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/midi1.htm
You've done recording with tape, some of the conventions hold over but a lot of them don't so you need to let go of preconceptions.
Logic has built in instruments that you can trigger with your keyboard, that's another option.
Some starting out think that they can get the sounds from their keyboard into Logic... that's not what happens.. with an external keyboard two things are happening.
    1. It's recording MIDI data, which in turn plays the keyboard.. the sound will always come out of the Keyboard's audio outputs. You can record a MIDI performance... and then edit it to perfection then record the keyboard's audio output into Logic as an audio file.
    2. The keyboard acts as a controller to play Logic's internal instruments.
