Routing Quicktime synth audio into Logic

Does anybody know how to route the Quicktime synthesizer's built in GM sound module's audio output back into Logic so it can be included in a bounce down mix ?

Sure, first open Jackrouter from your application folder or drag it into your dock.
Hit the start button. Open Logic and chose Jack router as your device. Open the application you want to route into Logic (like Quicktime/iTunes whatever) and select Jack Router as Standard Input/Output in the Audio Midi setup of your Mac. Back in Jackrouter hit the routing button - menue opens. On the left there are the send port, so in my screenshot example I have chosen Kontakt 3 standalone to be routed into Logic but it could be Quick Time/itunes whatever. I selected Jack Router as the output device in Kontakt as well, now I click on K3 in the send port section and on the right I double click on Logic as the receive ports, the Logic letters turn red to indicate that a connection was made.
If you connect the Logic send ports to the system receive ports and activate software monitoring you will hear what you record into Logic through Jack Router. So I think this little app is very useful in many situations.

  • Latency, Recording incoming Audio into Logic,... I don't understand

I'm trying to clear up my understanding (or misunderstanding) of latency of incoming audio into Logic.
    As a test, here's what I did.
    Set-Up
    1. In Preferences/Audio/General, I set Plug-In delay Compensation to off.
    2. In Preferences/Audio/Core I set the I/O Buffer Size to 32 (is this necessary?, to go that low?)
    3. In Preferences/Audio/General I turn on the Low Latency Mode On, set Limit to 0ms (Zero Milliseconds)
    4. Created a 1/4 note click track with Klopfgeist.
    5. Just for reference, I converted to audio. Opened in the sample editor and it is indeed, exactly on the beat.
    6. Set up my Roland Fantom as a Midi instrument. Channel 10 to trigger a Side Stick sound.
    7. Create another 1/4 note click track.
    8. Recorded the Rolands Output into my MOTU 2408 interface into Logic.
9 Opened up the waveform up in the sample editor, zoom in and notice it is obviously late.
    10. Move the Anchor point 6 ticks to line it up,
Therefore, the incoming audio is off by 6 ticks.
Is it not possible to get 0 latency? I read the chapter in the manual but I believe this wasn't made clear, i could be wrong.
I have a guitarist coming over to record on my record in a week, I don't know how to deal with this except to move his entire track
    by 6 ticks. ?

That is not really the type of latency that's affected by your audio I/O buffer setting. A DAW system has different types of latency, MIDI latency, latency caused by some plugins, AD/DA converter latency..etc. The six tics will probably remain the same or close to it if you're buffer is set to 64, 126, 256...etc.
Why do you have "Low Latency" mode selected, do you know what it's function is?
The I/O buffer setting affects two main aspects.
The response of the system when you play a virtual instrument, and...
...real-time monitoring of an audio input track. (this is an audio signal that passes through Logics audio engine and can use live effects)
The example using the Fantom requires MIDI sent to the keyboard and the audio into the MOTU passes through the AD converter.
What you want to set is the Record Delay so that your audio records in time, however... it needs to be set using a loopback test.
Use a 1/4 note recorded audio click (side stick) that you've adjusted to be perfectly on the beat copy it a few times. Use a cable from the MOTU's output to an open channel's input, record the click, compare.. now adjust the "Recording Delay" until the recorded click matches the first click.
Recording delay is on the Preferences/Audio tab.

  • Importing Synth Names into Logic and the "environment"

    Logic 7.2, OSX.4.something...
I'm brand spanking new to Logic (migrating from Opcode's Vision...) and I have 3 questions:
    1) The Environment: I've read the user manual chapter on "The Environment" and I'm totally lost. Is there not a way that Logic can read what's attached to it via your MIDI interface/OSX MidiCore setup and create an environment based on this automatically? This would be a good starting point at least, but there's no mention in the manual of this function and it seems crazy that one would have to create each instrument, define each channel and so on down the line.
    2) Once my synthesizer and their channels are defined how do you get synthesizer patch names into logic such that when I pick an instrument from the track or arrange window, I can see a list of all patches available in any given bank for that instrument and pick my sound (ie: send the bank or program change message....) This is not explained anywhere that I could find and I'm curious if there's a way to import via sysex or a universal librarian. I'm an old school Opcode Vision user and I have patch names for all my gear and I can't imgine having to type all the names and even if I did, there's nothing that explains how to do this and assign patch change and bank change commands. Can sombody explain or point me to a resource that explains in laymans terms how to set up ones MIDI environment based on their MIDICore setup and get patch names to come through.
    3) Librarian: I can't find anything that talks about a way to manage patches and instruments within Logic and I need some method of being able to manage and get patches into Logic. Does Logic have a librarian or do I need a 3rd party program? If it doesn't have this, can somebody suggest a program that would meet this function and integrate with Logic such that I can import and manage patches?
I hope this makes sense to somebody....
    Thanks WAY in advance....

Hi and welcome fellow former Vision user. I too came from Vision a couple years ago
    to answer
    1) Yes, the 1st time you open logic it looks at your audio midi setup (AMS) to make a basic environment from the info there. if there no hardware synths listed there they will not show up in Logic. Unfortunately Logic does not come with any synth device lists to add to your AMS so there is none to choose from. you will have to define them or you can use the MOTU list. you can download a copy here http://www.digicake.com/midnam/ download the MOTU.sit MOTU uses these midnam files for bank and patch change info. Unfortunately Logic does not use the bank and program information in them, it sure would make setting Logic up much easier
    2) To Get patch names into logic you can type them in one by one or use a word processor doc to import the names Pages 216 and 217 of the manual explain this
    3) Librarian? well sort of... Emagic had one called SoundDiver that I think is still in beta testing for OSX but I am not real familiar with it do a google search and see what you come up with
I am hoping that someday Apple will use .middev and .midnam files to address outboard synths the same way DP does. That is why I use DP when I want to make standard midi files for outboard synths. DP is very similar to Vision in that way. but for everything else Logic rules

  • Recording audio into logic?

hello, how can you record audio straight into logic express 7,i have an audio interface, just dont know how to control logic to do this.i know how to record it onto my hard drive, but just thought you might be able to record it into logic ,like you would recording midi, into a track etc..thats if you can do it at all ?
    hope this makes sense.
    thanx

When you record the track segment you are creating is saved on your hard drive. It is not data that is saved as part the song file itself. It is more like a link. Each segment is separate so you are going to create a new one each time you record a part of your song. Logic wants to place them into a common folder.
Logic needs to have a path to those files so it can access them for playback. It is best to have them in the song file folder rather than somewhere else on your hard drive. When you follow through with setting the audio path Logic will create the necessary folders for the different types of files it will need to access.
When you create a new song file it does not have that audio path. So, you either set up the link/path after you create a new song file, or when you try to record your first track segment, Logic will ask you to set that path before recording.
    Hope that helps.

  • Exporting Audio into Logic has altered the audio

Ok, what step am I missing? When exporting the audio From STP (Sound FX, Foley, ect) to Logic, for some reason when I play the audio in logic, it is no longer synced with the movie and the pitch sounds deeper.

hey thanks, yeah, i figured it out like right after I posted the topic. I was like "hmmm i wonder if the bit resolution and sample rate is it..."...and sure enough it was... But thanks anyways.

  • Can't record audio into logic

Hi guys. This is my first post here. I am new to Logic and Macs in general, so bear with me. Lol. I am trying to record bass, guitar, vocals as well as some intrument samples from Logic, but when I click the record enable button, I don't see any audio coming in. This is odd, because I can record in Soundtrack Pro, so there must be a signal getting to the computer from my Presonus Firebox. One other strange thing that is happening is that I can play audio from my two Dynaudio BM5As no problem, but when I play a sample from Ultra Beat, it plays back through the built-in speakers on my Mac. Also, when I go to play a software instrument, it doesn't play, either through the monitors or the computer. Sorry if this is a bit confusing, but I don't know how else to put it. Any thoughts? I assume it is just my own lack of technical knowledge and that the solution will be found in some sort of settings window. Any and all help appreciated.
    -Spencer

Make sure your Firebox is the selected Driver in Logic's Audio Preferences.

  • Recording audio into  logic from a rewire application

Im using logic 8, but im about to have 9.Is there a way to record audio in from a rewire application, in my case Reason 4.Im able to run sound through it,and out of the main mix. But cant figure out how to record onto a track for later use and manipulation.Any help would be great. Thanks

In your mixer: options> new Aux. channel strip, set input to Reason channel (#,#). In Reason don't use the 14:2 mixer, but hook everything up to the hardware interface. If you do go through the 14:2 everything in Reason will be on one track in Logic (Mix L/R in the Reason input menu).
Then in Logic, either change the ouput of that channel, or set up a send, to a bus (say 1).
Then create an Audio track in the arrange window, and set the input to bus 1.
That gives you a track with the Reason part recorded as an audio file.

  • Best practice for exporting an 8-channel Quicktime's audio into stereo and 5.1 files for Encore BD?

The subject pretty much says it all. A client has given me a Quicktimde ProResHQ with 8 channels of audio.
I understand how to export the stereo channels (1 and 2) from Premiere but how are channels 3-8 normally handled for proper 5.1 surround authoring in Encore?
Thanks for any advice - I was unable to find specifics when searching previous posts.

how are channels 3-8 normally handled for proper 5.1 surround authoring in Encore?
You must create the 5.1 outside Encore. Note that from Premiere it requires the optional Surcode.
Encore essentially passes the 5.1 through to the build process; you do not get preview of the 5.1 audio.

  • Why does the letter P show up when i try to record audio into Logic Pro and no audio is audible ?!

Can anyone pleaes help as I have occured this problem today and sent hours trying to fix it and not had any luck !?!?
I always record in audio by press "R" on the channel strip but today for some odd reason the letter "P" shows up and no audio is audiable ?
Can anyone tell me what's going on ............!?!?
"When I try to record in some audio and press "R" it chnages to the letter "P" and no audio is coming through ?!?"

This is because you have Punch on the fly enabled under Options (top menu)>Audio>Punch on the Fly.... signified by the letter P instead of the letter R

  • Random clicks when routing standalone synths into Logic via Soundflower

Anyone facing random clicks when re-routing audio from standalone music software into Logic through Cycling '74 Soundflower?
I am testing that with the Vogue Quattro free synth, that can be downloaded here:
    http://tinyurl.com/2ucyfem
This is not AU so it requires re-routing. Can you also please mention your processor speed, Mac model and OS version? Trying to find out if this is a performance issue or not.
    Tnx.

Ok, from first experiments I'm basically getting the same behaviour you see - MIDI is being routed to Kontakt, and it's playing. If you set Kontakt to use the default system output, it plays fine. But when set to the Soundflower driver, it plays (looking at the meters) but that audio doesn't show up in Logic.
I've tried using an external instrument, using an audio channel in input monitor mode, and an input object, software monitoring is on, and in no cases can I get the Kontakt audio in Logic.
I'm going to try a few things. I've certainly used an aggregate device with Soundflower to pipe audio into Logic in the past (though not in LP8, it was LP7). At the moment I don't know whether it's a Kontakt issue, an aggregate device issue, a Soundflower issue, or a Logic issue.
    More in a bit...
Edit: just using Soundflower as the audio device (ie on its own, not as part of an aggregate deivce) the audio does go back into Logic's mixer.
Edit2: Ok, just got it working. AMS and Soundflower is picky about picking up the number of inputs/outputs correctly here. I futzed with it a bit (see my sig) and it's now working.
Edit3: And now it's stopped again. Soundflower has always been a little flaky for me, so perhaps it's general Soundflower flakiness that makes this not a dependable setup. The Soundflower inputs have disappeared from my Aggregate device - seems to be crashing or something. Re-futzing it, re-creating the aggregate device with care so the correct number of inputs show up, and it works again for a while. But it's not at all reliable.
Give Jack a try, and see whether you get more stable behaviour. I used Jack on my old PPC as well, but don't have it installed here to hand...

  • Record video into finalcut  and audio multitrack into logic in sync

    Hi,
I'm an experienced logic user but new to video.
What is the best way to record video and audio multitrack!! synchronously?
Can I record video direct to my harddisc and synchronously record audio into logic or soundtrack pro? We have two separate macs available.
-Can I connect finalcut with logic via rewire or do I need additional sync hardware?
-How can I start record simultaneously for finalcut and logic?
    -Do I need finalcut pro?
-Can I record video and audio directly and simultaneously into soundtrack pro or finalcut?
I currently work with a cutter who uses canopus but assign each video take to each audio take is so time consuming. There must be a better solution for video production.
    Any feedback appreciated,
    Thanks Eddie

I may be wrong about this, but AFAIK…
Can I record video direct to my harddisc and synchronously record audio into logic or soundtrack pro?
    No.
-Can I connect finalcut with logic via rewire or do I need additional sync hardware?
    FCP is not ReWire compatible.
-How can I start record simultaneously for finalcut and logic?
    You can not.
    -Do I need finalcut pro?
Maybe, but I can't say one way or the other. What is your goal with video?
-Can I record video and audio directly and simultaneously into soundtrack pro or finalcut?
You can record directly into FCP, either via FW or SDI (if you have supporting hardware)
I currently work with a cutter who uses canopus but assign each video take to each audio take is so time consuming. There must be a better solution for video production.
Not familiar with Canopus, so I can't comment.
    Any feedback appreciated,
Some editors find the term "cutter" to be an unfair characterization of what they do. We do waaaaay more than just cut out the bad takes!

  • Sound from Xiosynth into Logic

Can anyone tell me how to get sound out of Novation Xiosynth into Logic? It works fine as a midi controller, so should I do something in the environment to get it work properly? My audio interface is M-Audio Firewire Audiophile.
    G5 2x2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In order to get the sound of your external midi keyboard or synth back into logic for mixing you have a couple of choices
    an audio input object
    or the External plug in
    Input Object
create an audio object in your audio Layer of your environment, and in the objects parameter box to the left assign it to be a input object. You can assign Inputs for all of your audio interfaces inputs if you like but assign this one to be whatever inputs your keyboard or synth is connect to, make it mono or stereo your choice. Now on the input objects channel strip, assign the outputs to your main outs going to your speakers. Now you can monitor and mix your synths sound right in logic along with other audio
    External Plug-in
you are use to using an audio instrument track to sequence midi to send to Logic’s Instruments (ESX24 etc.). You can also use and instrument track to send midi to your outboard synth as well by using the External plug-in, which is found in the same menu with Logic’s instruments. this only works well when you are planning to use only one of the sounds in your keyboard, but the cool thing is that you can use all of Logic’s cool plug ins like verbs, compressors etc. for your outboard midi synth, just like Logic’s instruments
for further sound shaping of your sounds you may want to record each midi channel separately as audio. Since you already have it connected and are using an input object to monitor, solo the midi track you want to record, assign an audio track to receive the input from the keyboard, record enable it and hit record.

  • Can a song created on my Yamaha DGX 505 be imported into Logic Exp?

I have songs that I created on my Yamaha keyboard and saved as midi files on it. Can I import those to Logic Exp and retain all the tracks and settings so I can then work on and develope further on my Macbook?

Logic can load a stannard or GM midi file as long as you can get that file onto your computer. So the first question is has your synth got an export function that allows you to send those files to your computer? Even if it does you will not be exporting the sounds and effects of your synth but only the midi files. However logic can control your external synth provided you set up a multi instrument object for your synth in logic's environment. (See manual) Another way around this is to record the individual synth tracks into Logic as audio tracks. Properly recorded these should sound exactly the same with all of the synth effects and settings intact, but of course these will be audio tracks and not midi which means, of course, that you can no longer manipulate them using midi. You can however use all the audio plug ins in Express. Personally I would set up a multi-instrument object in the enviroment because, even though it's a pain to do this, it ultimately gives you way more control over the files. Logic's midi editors are VERY deep. Then, when you've got the tracks exactly the way you want them, record them to audio for further manipulation with the audio effects plug ins and mixing automation. Hope this helps,
    Greg

  • Recording iTunes into Logic Express

  • Importing patch names into Logic Express

Anyone know of a utility that will allow me to get the patch names out of my hardware synths and into Logic?

Yes, but the utility built into Logic is a simple cut/paste from a text file. I have 6 synths each with multiple banks and a lot of custom patches. Even if I could find the patch lists in .txt format it would still be a lot of typing. There has to be a better way. I've seen PC software that can pull patch names directly from synths via sysex. Logic can't do this as far as I know so I'm looking for a 'helper app' that can. I know Sound Diver used to be a way of doing this but as far as I know it's pretty much dead.
