RPCBind crashes shortly after startup

Question

Hi all,
I have a critical application that is dependent on a portmapper service. In older versions of OSX, portmap worked without issues, but since moving to 10.8.4, I found that the portmap service was replaced with RPCbind. Intuitively, I thought this service would begin on startup, but either it does not, or it crashes shortly afterwards. In anycase, after I startup my laptop, the service is not running. If I try to launch it manually, it stays up for about 30 seconds, and then crashes. The command I use to start it is: sudo launchctl start com.apple.rpcbind
The var log shows the following:

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I just tried this on three different Macbook Pros running 10.8.4 --- all display the same symptoms.
RPCBind is not running on startup
Launching RPCBind manually results in a RPCBind crash shortly after the launch
Something seems to be very wrong.
