RR 2314 and Onnto DataTale 4 Bay Raid - mounts then unmounts

Hi,
My RR 2314 works great making a 4 bay raid 5 array on a DIFFERENT 4 bay box (ProAvio) and works great with a single drive JBOD in an external enclosure, but with the DataTale it initializes fine asa JBOD, and then theres a failure (Disk '-' at Controller1-Channel3 failed.) and the disc unmounts ... i can get it back but have to initialize it again.
The DataTale box has an oxford chip set, and does it's own raid thing, so i'm thinking it could be a conflict between the RAID in the box, and the 2314 card? Arrgh!!!
Anyone have any experience of this, or ideas?
Cheers

Thanks - all good advice ... i'll start doing that or using chronosync.
The error message that i get with copying is about the disc unmounting. It seems that the transfer is going well, and then the disc unmounts and so then the copying can't continue.
i'm starting to think that that particular hard drive is misbehaving.
I'm thinking that the best thing to do might be to get a eSATA card (without any raid capability) and plug it into that and so bypass the rr2314 as i think the problem may be a clash of the rr2314 and the raid box ...
woa, wait a minute...
because i have to initialize the disc first off in the 'rr2314 web GUI'. In order, what happens is that the discs get raided by the box, then initialised and 'listed' as a JBOD by the rr2314 and then initialised again by disc utility ... could all be too much?!
this is 'normal'. I mean, this happens to me too if i initialize through the card. So I dont initialize my new hard drives through the 2314. Rather i initialize new drives in the computer itself (plus the zeroing/initial testing) with DUtility. Then i transfer the drives to the enclosure connected to the 2314. The highpoint webGUI declares them 'legacy'. But theyre recognized everywhere.

Help!! After Mavericks update: total loss of my 5TB  of Data on my Onnto-Data-Tale- Raid.

You have the choice of waiting till the servers aren't as loaded or till they come up with a solution to fix the errors going on. As of now its difficult to determine whether the overloaded servers are the blame or whether the update is faulty and how much of your personal data you will lose. I only lost my apps which were all on my itunes so it wasn't much of a big deal.. You can always back up your data and then proceed to update if you feel thats a safer route but I read that some people had issues backing up their data before the upgrade as well.

  • Connecting OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Dual-Bay (RAID) Enclosure help setup

    System info:
Enclosure: OWC Mercury Elite-Pro Dual Bay (RAID Enclosure)
Comps: Mac Pro & MacBook Pro 13"
    OS: 10.6.4
Connected enclosure via firewire800 with 2x 2tb hitachi drives.
So I picked up an Open Box version of essentially this enclosure:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW936AL2/
(the differences is, the light is not in the direct center of the enclosure as pictured and the little blue switch is not on the logicboard under the fan like it was pictured in the instructional booklet).
Now going through the instructional manual, and wanting to set it up as a RAID 0 i noticed that on my enclosure there wasnt a place on the board for it to switch it to proper type of configuration i wanted.
And their site is a little messy (imho) to find the proper info and so many variants of their enclosures.
So heres what my enclosure board looks like:
    http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7708/owc.jpg
I put two 2TB drives in the enclosure (2 Hitachi Deskstar 7200s).
plug it in via FireWire800 to my MacBookPro and get the initialize the drive alert and thats where iam at. I havent set up this particular enclosure before so im not sure if its all software controlled now and the best way to go about configuring it the way I want it to (RAID 0 for now).
and how to go about in the future changing it if i say wanted RAID 1 or JBOD.
any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

thanks, though the problem has been resolved courtesy of Loudspeakermusic's link.
The problem is that the manual doesnt state anything about this particular drive.
As you can see from the image:
mine does not have the actual jumper settings like indicated of Page 5 of the PDF Manual (the same Manual i got with the actual enclosure).
So the firmwire utility helped as I was able to create the RAID or RAID 1 or SPAN/JBOD properly.
According to OWC if there drive was over 1TB in size I must click on the Enable Large Disk box to allow me to use 2x2TB drives then once I set the firmware to RAID 0, i can format them properly in Disk Utility.
So far I'm running the 2x2TB (4TB) in RAID 0 on my enclosure fine and can transfer just well.
Like Loudspeaker stated, i have to have the drive directly connected and not daisychained as I did not know why I wasnt able to change the firmware settings.
    as shown:
    Thanks for all the pointers!

  • Combine OS and Data on same RAID 5 array

Our company is buying a new Xserve to replace our first XServe with 4 drives. Currently, we have the XServe set up with two RAID 1 arrays - one for data and one for the OS. Given that the new XServes no longer have four drives, we are trying to decide how we should configure the new RAID. We are thinking of going with a RAID 5 using all three disks. I would like to know if combining the OS and data on the same RAID array is contrary to best practices. Any perspective appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tim

Like so many thing - 'it depends'.
There is no one 'right answer'.
It depends largely on the application - what does this server do?
It also depends on the volume of data - how much data are you planning to store?
It also depends on the importance of the data on the machine, as well as backup replication and failover processes (if any).
Then you can add them all together and work out the cost/benefit analysis of the options.
For example, if you're running a database on the machine, you probably don't want RAID 5 at all.
If you have a robust replication and failover plan and can tolerate the entire machine crashing due to a failed disk, you might not care since you can run on the backup/failover until the machine is restored to production.
If data integrity is your primary goal and you don't currently have a backup plan you might opt for RAID 1 boot/data and the third drive as a hot spare or backup disk.
If this is your only machine you might benefit from using RAID 5 regardless of the application, but that only addresses one of many possible points of failure.
As you can see, there are so many variables the 'right' solution will depend on your particular circumstances.

Hi, I have a freecom 1TB hard drive which was working fine until it froze.  I pulled it out (mistake I now know) and now it doesn't mount.  It shows up in Disk Utility but won't manually mount.  When I try to repair it gives message 'failed on exit'. Some people have said to try Disk Warrior, but at $100 it's quite expensive maybe fix.  help!

You likely need to reformat the drive which will destroy all data and you need a backup to restore it. If no backup is present then a data retrieval service can be more expensive than DiskWarrior. There is software that can rescue the data but I can not vouch for it's effectiveness as I have always maintained backups. .

  • Disk Utility crashes and dmg files won't mount

My girlfriend's Powerbook has been acting up for a while now, and we still can't seem to get it working properly.
One day, her Adobe programs just stopped working. Tried several things, but nothing worked and she ended up reinstalling OSX. That fixed the problem, but then she noticed she could no longer open DMG files. Accordingly, she tried to run Disk Utility but then found that it would always crash when trying to open.
She ran Disk Utility from the install disc, but nothing turned up. She also tried looking up several methods of fixing the DMG problem (deleting various files), but nothing's worked.
If I remember correctly, she also tried using the 10.3.9 combo updater some time ago, but that didn't help. We're actually not totally sure about that, so we're trying to reinstall the 10.3.9 combo updater, except for the fact that Apple has only made the file available as a DMG (which she obviously can't open).
So can anyone please help us get Disk Utility to stop crashing, and get those DMG files to open/mount? I have the crash logs but they're huge, so I'm not so sure if I should post them. Thanks everyone!
PS. I can open DMG files for her using MagicISO (I'm on a PC), but it's a bit of a pain transferring those larger files to her.
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What files did you try deleting? If you don't know what a file does or why you're messing around with it, you shouldn't; that's just asking for trouble.
Let's assume for the moment that you have a corrupted preferences file. To find out, go to Users/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the problem continues. If not, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, and then you can Trash the file on your Desktop.
You should also use your OS X install disc to boot the system and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk, to see if there are any problems. If it reports any errors that it can fix, keep running it until no more are reported.
If there's an error that it cannot fix, stop using your system immediately and make a backup of everything; then get a disk utility such as DiskWarrior to see if it can fix your drive. If your drive cannot be repaired, you will need to replace the internal drive and restore from your backup (if you have one).
    Hope this helps,
    Mulder

  • Slave drive, CDs, USB drives, Disk Images and FW drives fail to mount

Hi. I have two Maxtor internal hard drives (6Y160P0 and 6Y120P0), the second of which (6Y120P0) all of a sudden will not mount on the desktop. When I reboot my Mac, I get two identical error windows that state, “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer”, with options to initialize, ignore, or eject. (There are no other drives of any type connected to the computer).
Within Disk Utility (when run from the primary hard drive), the slave drive shows up, but its icon is dimmed. Clicking the “Mount” button does nothing. Disk First Aid does not allow one to “Repair Permissions” nor “Repair Disk”, presumably since it won’t mount (eg, these options are dimmed). One odd aspect about Disk Utility is that the master and slave drive are listed as “disk0s10” and “disk1s10”, respectively, rather than the way they usually show up with the names I’ve given them. Yet on the desktop the working master drive shows up with its given name.
When I run Disk Itility from a CD, both internal drives look fine, accept repairs, and the drives are listed by their proper names.
As another interesting clue, all of the Disk Images (stored on the working master internal hard drive) that I have attempted to mount fail to open as well. When I doubleclick them, I get an error that reads, “The following disk images failed to mount: Reason: No mountable file systems”.
Two different USB keychains fail to mount; my FW drive fails to mount.
I’ve run Applejack Auto Restart without any difficulty several times.
Apple's Hardware check CD says all is AOK.
I’ve rebuilt this problematic disk (and the master) several times with Disk Warrior 3.03 and all is supposedly AOK.
SmartReporter says both disks are fine.
TechTool Pro 4.1.2 has run the following checks on the problem disk and these are AOK: Disk Controller, SMART, Read/Write.
All of this makes me wonder if the issue is with my system software, rather than the slave disk??? Interestingly, CDs refuse to mount as well when I've booted from the primary hard drive (but I don't think it is the CD drive itself since I can boot from the CD drive). This, coupled with the fact that disk images won't mount, makes me now think it is an OS issue rather than hardware.
Any suggestions about what I can do to salvage and fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!

His suggestion to run the 10.4.8 combined PPC update worked like a charm and solved the problem perfectly!
PS If you are having the same issue, there is the problem that one can't use a USB/FW drive to get the combo updater onto the problematic hard drive, and even if you can, the faulty software won't allow one to mount a .dmg image. This can be solved by using "Target" mode, eg connect the problematic CPU to a working CPU (in this case, my PowerBook) via a FW cable, then boot up the problem CPU while holding down the letter "t". One can then drag the combined updater unstuffed file (eg, not the .dmg) directly to the problematic disk from the working CPU. Then, when I booted in the problematic disk/CPU, all it took was a doubleclick on the unstuffed updater and all was fine.

  • Connected to a different computer and now ipod won't mount

I've searched through the discussions and I can't find anyone who has had this specific problem, but apologies in advance if this issue has already been addressed somewhere I didn't see..
My ipod and ibook have been working perfectly fine together for 6 months. Yesterday I connected my ipod to a friends ibook so we could listen to some music off my ipod on his itunes. He disconnected it without ejecting it first (I wonder if this caused the problem although I've done it before by mistake and had no major problems) and now my ipod won't mount on my desktop.
It shows up in the system profiler and in ipod updater it says ipod connected but unable to mount. When I plug it in I get two error messages saying "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read" and "A disk attempting to mount -unknown has failed verification or has failed" When I open the disk utility and click repair in the first aid it says "Invalid BTH length" "ipod needs to be repaired"
The ipod still plays perfectly fine when not attached to the computer.
I know the simple solution is to restore the ipod but I'm VERY reluctant to do this as I have some music on my ipod that I can't reload because I didn't keep it in my itunes to save hard drive space and I've just moved countries and the hard copies are back home.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
