RRAS Windows Updates Blocked

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has ever setup Routing and remote access service to act as a NAT service and then found that they cannot perform windows updates?
I have just setup a Hyper-V Server on my production network and create a single VM on it with two NIC's. The first one acts as WAN connection for the internet and the second one acts as a LAN connection for the rest of my VM's on this server. This is suppose
to allow me to create a test environment that is isolated from my production network. I can get my VM's to access the internet via the first VM with the two NIC's but they can not access windows updates or any website with microsoft.com in the domain name.
All servers are running windows server 2012 R2. The HTTP and HTTPS ports have been allowed on the RRAS server. I can ping microsoft.com and it resolves the IP address as.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Jake,
Is the RRAS server able to access the Microsft Update?
If no, please check if there is any firewall or filter in the production blocking the Microsoft Update.
If yes, please try to disable the firewall on RRAS server to check if it is caused by the Windows firewall.
Here is the firewall requirement for Microsoft Update:

  • Windows update blocks CS license?

I'm running CS6 on 25 computers in a windows network (XP/Win7). The windows updates are automated with Wsus. For the second time it seems that a Windows Update somehow blocks the CS6 license. Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign still runs. But Acrobat won't start. The only cure I found was to deactivate and activate the license. And Acrobat runs again. Anyone els also faced this problem?

    Apex version 3.2.1
    DB version 10.2
    Web server architecture (?)
Browser: MS Internet Explorer version 6.0.290.5512.xpsp_sp3_gdr.100427-1636
Just trying to access the APEX URL gives 'page not found' error.
We are still on IE6 because a lot of our vendor supplied solutions are still on IE6 so until we get those resolved we have to keep this browser although we are working on a virtualization tool that will help. In the meantime we have told our users they have to switch to Firefox to use their APEX applications and that means constantly switching back and forth between browsers for them. We have identified the MS critical update patch for this but I am looking for a better solution instead of the interim solution of switching browsers.
    Thanks,
    Carolyn

  • TS: Windows updates blocking

    Dear,
Our capture task sequence stalls on Windows updates. Strange thing is, our deploy TS doesn't and also there mandatory updates are the same (for now, capture TS should contains all updates when succesfull).
The issue is similar to this one:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2011/01/28/known-issue-install-software-updates-action-hangs-on-windows-7.aspx#pi140062=3
We also see in the smsts.log as last entries (they are there for some hours now):
Waiting for job status notification ...
Waiting for job status notification ...
Waiting for job status notification ...
though the link is for SCCM 2007 whereas we have 2012 AND our deploy TS works fine.
    Please advise.

    Hi,
    Have you seen this blog?
OSD hanging at Software Updates installation task sequence step
    http://configmgrblog.com/2012/05/30/osd-hanging-at-software-updates-installation-task-sequence-step/
One way to fix this issue is to use the Offline Servicing option within Configuration Manager 2012.

  • How to block Windows update services?

We have a need to prevent windows update traffic to flow thru our network on certain dates. Basically this type of traffic will clog our mpls bandwidth preventing other type of traffic to flow. We are using up to some part QoS on out routers but it not working all the time. Eg, we put in ip address of one windows update server but updates are pulled of the other, then you enter second ip and updates are coming from third, etc.
I would like to explore other, a bit more controllable options utilizing Cisco's technology: ASA 8.4, IronPort WSA.
In summary, to create a traffic policy, not specific to IP addresses, that will kick in at certain date/time, be on for certain period of time and turned off after (automatically).
Any ideas, suggestions how to tackle this issues would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,.

In WSA, go to Web Security Manager/Define Custom Time ranges, and create a time range, call it "Workday", set it for the time you want to block.
Create a new Access Policy, set the identies to All Users, click Advanced at the bottom.
Set the time range to the Workday time range.
Set the user agent to the Microsof Windows Updates (Its under Common User Agents/Others)
In the Protocols section of the policy, set it for "Define custom settings", and tell it to http, ftp, etc.
There are other ways to do it, creating an Identity for example, and then creating a policy for that, but this should work...

I have been trying to update Flash Player and windows keeps blocking the download saying its not secure but my Norton 360 tells me its safe What can I do ?

I have never seen Windows blocking a Flash Player update.  Try downloading the offline installers

The issue for most people is that a lot of machines try to download at the same time causing bandwidth issues.

Hello first time posting i was just curious we have a domain and we are now starting to see through windows updates the windows 10 update. I was just wondering is there a group policy that can block the update our bypass it?

  • Block Patch KB3002657 from installing/being available via Windows Update via Group Policy

    Hi Everyone,
Been hearing a lot of issues around with KB3002657 causing Authentication issues. We've recently appeared to have similar issues. I'm currently getting out SCCM guru's to run
an inventory on our environment to review if we have had this deployed to our environment, either by Windows Update (manual), SCCM/Wsus etc. If we do we're looking to have this removed and not deployed via our normal mechanisms to stop any production outages.
I would like to see if it is possible to block/hide this update from being visible from Windows Update, possibly by Group Policy.
From memory Microsoft created specifc ADM templates for blocking updated for Internet Explorer version to assist with the same type of issues (i.e. to stop IE from being updated
via Automatic Updates). Would there by anything like this available for this update, or does anyone know of another way (specifc Registry settings or ADM files that could be edited) to achieve this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Browser cache ignore no longer works after windows update

Just thought I'd share that after the windows update I did
this week, the browser cache blocking trick described in many
places where you put ?r=<randomnumber> at the end of a URL no
longer works. Not exactly sure what happened, but it now causes a
URL not found error, at least for me when I'm loading local files
    off my disk.
This thread talks about the cache blocking trick:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=15&catid=665&threadid =1357763&highlight_key=y&keyword1=cache

    Here's a technique I use. In a php file:
    header("Expires: Mon, 20 Jul 1997 05:00:00 GMT");
    header("Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate");
    header("Cache-Control: post-check=0, pre-check=0", FALSE);
    header("Pragma: no-cache");
This must be wrapped in php tags.

  • Windows Update Error 80080005 Windows 7 Client with WSUS 3.0 SP2 server

Hello everyone, I've looked around at other threads related to my issue, and I can't seem to find a correct answer.
I have a computer lab that I've recently installed a Windows 7 Enterprise image onto 35 Dell Optiplex computers (most are 380's, a few older 360's).
I created the image using MDT2010 and used one of the 380's as a reference.
All has been well for about a month or two but recently 6 computers are giving me Windows Update errors with the error code of 80080005.
I have a WSUS 3.0 SP2 server running, and all of my other computers seem to be getting their updates just fine.  WSUS has the problematic computers in it's database, but it shows that they haven't checked in for "x" days.
I have Avast 4.8 Professional installed, I have OpenDNS configured to block bad websites, ____, etc. and I also use an Untangle server to prevent access to bad websites.  I've ran a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan on the affected computers, as well
as Windows Defender scan, and Windows Live OneCare scans, and all have found no malicious software.
I have also tried resetting the Windows update service as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 as well as a script that supposedly does the same thing, but also resets all previous
update events, but I can't find the script source right now (I had ran it last week, and it didn't work).
I'm currently running a SFC /Scannow on one of the computers, and now it has finished.  It gives the error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.  I'll have to google that next.
The last windows update that ran on the computer that I'm working on now was installed on 11-18-2010 and was a Windows Defender Update (KB915597 Def: 1.93.1985.0)
Previous to that was 11/9/2010 2 updates: KB977165 and KB981852.
I guess I'll have to look at all of the other machines to see if they have the same updates installed.
Anyway, has anyone else had this problem?  I've seen vista home editions, and RC's but no real Windows 7 Pro+ RTM versions in business environments where updates were controlled by WSUS.
Thanks for any help that you can provide!
By the way, I only work at this location once a week (tuesdays, well thursdays too, but I'm next door to this building, but I have remote access), so bare with me on trying to fix things.

Ok, for the sake of completeness, I have completed the instructions given by Miya Yao.
After stopping the Windows Update Service (from an Admin Command prompt window), renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder to SDold, then starting the update service again, I still receive the same error when checking for updates.
The windows update log shows this (starting from about 4am) and I just reset the service at about 9:10, which you can see in the log.

  • 2012 R2 Essentials Windows Update error 80072EE2 and Dism errors 0x800f0906 and 0x800f081f

Since 11/2014 our R2 Essentials server on ESXI has been unable to run Windows Update, returning error 80072EE2. I ran the Windows Update troubleshooter which claimed it fixed something, but Windows Update returned the exact same error again. There are no
proxies or Internet access problems. I have ensured no firewall is blocking Windows Update URLs. So I tried the
sfc /scannow command which reports a file that cannot be repaired:
    2015-01-12 20:56:41, Info CSI 00000801 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:36{18}]"Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB" of prncacla.inf, Version = 6.3.9600.16384, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type = [l:24{12}]"driverUpdate", TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch
For this error others suggested running dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth which on my server tells me "The component store is repairable." So next I run
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth which instantly returns the same result that it is repairable. Next I run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth thinking this will fix it, but it returns this error: "Error 0x800f0906 source files could not be downloaded".
Articles suggest I use a different source, so I mount the R2 Essentials DVD used to install this server to drive letter Z: and use this command:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:Z:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess
This results in the error "Error 0x800f081f source files could not be found" and so I copy the sources\sxs folder locally to C: and re-run the last command pointing to this new location. I get the same error.
I have run chkdsk and I have tried rebooting between each of the above commands, which did not work. I have run all these commands as Administrator.
Does anyone know what I do next? I see references to these errors with several users attempting to install .NET framework but those solutions do not apply to my situation.
As a next step I considered uninstalling the last successfully installed Windows update (KB3011780) on this machine in case it broke something. Thoughts?

    Hi,
Please refer to following KB and reset Windows Update components, then check if can help you to solve this issue.
How do I reset Windows Update components?
In addition, did you check relevant log files (such as: DISM.log, CBS.log or others) whether find more clues?
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • Windows Firewall and Windows Update (Win 8.1)

Since Windows Vista I have always been using the Windows Firewall with "blocked outgoing traffic". As this is not the default setting, some basic windows services seem not to be included as firewall rules on the outgoing side.
My Problem is with the Windows Update:
On Windows Vista and 7 it was sufficient to create a rule for "wuauserv".
On Windows 8.1 however this seems not to be enough. The UI gives me error code 80240438 and the WindowsUpdate.log shows the following lines:
2014-06-14    20:11:08:150     952    538    IdleTmr    WU operation (CAgentProtocolTalker::SyncUpdates_WithRecover) started; operation # 2044; does use network; is at background

2014-06-14    20:11:08:151     952    538    WS    WARNING: Der Remoteendpunkt konnte nicht erreicht werden.
(.... and a lot of similar WARNING lines)
2014-06-14    20:11:12:921     952    538    IdleTmr    WU operation (CAgentProtocolTalker::SyncUpdates_WithRecover, operation # 2044) stopped; does use network; is at background
    priority
If I create a rule for the whole svchost.exe, the update works fine. Giving all services internet access is however not an option for me. Could you please tell me through which service(s) except wuauserv Windows Update performs its network activities?

    Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1 on a Gateway SX2370.  Purchased Sep. 2013.
As of Dec. 28, 2014 I have not gotten ANY windows defender updates and windows update has not been working at all. When I go to my start screen and type "update" Windows update still shows in the list, only now when I click on it, it brings
up a blank window and can only be closed by right clicking the tab on the taskbar. I cannot max or minimize the window either.
Up until Dec. 28th it was working perfectly, notifying me when updates were available, almost everyday for windows defender.
I have tried everything I could find to fix this, even a complete restore, with recovery media made for Win 8.1 and Win 8. Still no windows updates, of anything. To top it off as of Jan. 22, 2015 the Diagnostic Policy Service has stopped and I am denied
access when I try restarting it.
Windows XP was great until MS stopped support. Vista sucked, near as bad as Millenium or 2000. I never tried windows 7 instead going for windows 8, being the most recent version when I could afford a new PC. Adapting to win 8-8.1 was no easy task.
I'm not a tech guru, but I've owned & used windows from Dos 6.0, '95, '98, '98SE, Millenium, XP, XP home & Pro (sp1-2 & 3) and still have the installation/restore CDs for all of them. Even taught myself how to write the recovery
console directly from the hard drive of XP, OEM or full MS versions without using the CDs & now I'm using Windows 8 - 8.1. Getting rid of the recovery console was a BIG mistake in my opinion.
At one time I had a multi-boot system of win.95, 98, 98SE, Mill., XP home sp2 and XP Pro sp3 on a 1.5 TB self built system. Microsoft told me it was impossible, until I allowed two tech support reps remote access for 5 min.. Which also lead to me being
blocked from most MS websites &?suggestions windows forums for 3 years.
But so far, this failure of windows updates and the Diagnostic policy Service in Windows 8.1 has got me stumped. Can ANYONE give me a quick simple way to correct this? Please?
Thanks for reading this and any help or suggestions anyone has to offer. GOD bless you all and my thanks to every military person, their families and veterans for my freedom.

  • Windows Update fails on Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine

I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain.  The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server.
From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.
I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.

This is blocking further work.  Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time.  Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed
that as a test and got the same error message.  I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up.  No joy as well.  This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1.  Server 2008 servers dont seem to have
an issue.  Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue.  Only this new Server 2012 R2 server.  My logs are below:

  • G500 win8.1 window updates failing to install.

I recently purchased a Lenovo G500 in France (intel I7 2.2 ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb) with Windows 8.1 as the OS, and just got the Internet back last wednesday, so April 30th.
Since then, I've had a total 3 microsoft updates, which in and of itself is not terribly interesting, except that two of these three updates have failed, leading to the following message:
"Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
Obviously in French, but that's the translation I got anyway.
So here's my question: How often does this happen? Microsoft's site tells me to wait for about 30 minutes while it resolves, but the first time it took me close to an hour (and after the 3rd restart after it showed me this, I manually turned it off after it shut down and then it installed properly). The second update worked fine and I had no problems (albeit it took well over 30 minutes to install though), yet the third (this morning) also failed to install (but this time it took less than 30 minutes, although I noticed it froze on the lenovo screen after a restart, where the "loading" circles didn't show up, although I don't know after which restarted this occurred, as I had left it to run its course while I ate breakfast).
Now that I think about it, the first update error occurred after a system error which required a restart (cause unkown, some kind of error along the lines of 0x0000000A, but I found nothing I I'm guessing I didn't see correctly), and last night I noticed my laptop had frozen when I close it, so I manually shut it down. Coincidence? The second update worked fine, and it was the only time I had maually selected restart and update, so this could be a plausible theory, although I have no idea why it froze last night. Maybe I closed it too quickly after closing chrome (although I have no idea why this would cause a freeze...).
So my questions are as follow: Has this happened to any win 8.1 users, are your updates abnormally long (well over 10 minutes), do they occurr extremely frequently (every 2-3 days, if not every day), and what could the causes be for the failure to install/reverting changes issue?
Thank you in advance for any help.

There are lots of possible reasons. Other programs interfering, insufficient permissions, AV blocking, – the list is endless.
I could say do a forum seach but that facility is as useless as the Adobe installers.

  • Windows 8.1 Update VLSC ISO windows update error

I have a downloaded version of Windows 8.1 Update 1 from the VLSC and Windows Update fails after a clean install. I've installed it on different systems and multiple fail with the same error (80072EFE). The weird thing is that it works fine against our
WSUS server just not checking online. There isn't anything blocking the connection to Windows Update so not sure what is going on.

    Hi,
If you receive Windows Update error 80072efe or 80072f76 while checking for updates, it might be caused by a connection interruption between your computer and the Windows Update servers. You can run Windows Update Troubleshooter that will automatically find
and fix some common problems with Windows update.

In addition, please check your security application setting, such as firewall.

  • I keep getting a false WINDOWS UPDATE box flashing only in Firefox

I use the current Firefox with pop up blocker and cannot stop a false Windows Update notice asking me to reboot. I am not prepared to press yes or postpone as I suspect it will unleash something I do not want.
I can supply a screen capture of the pop up.
I tried the same sites with IE and the pop up did not appear, so it appears related to Firefox.
I run Malwarebytes and MSE and they say my system is free of viruses and malware.

Could You Please Add A Photo So We Know What This Looks Like?
Then I Will Be Able To Test It On My Windows 7. But If We Are Talking Serious If Would Like To Reinstall And Try Again!

    Happy Firefoxing!
    Hello vk3col,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [[Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems#w_5-reinstall-firefox|here]].
<b>WARNING:</b>Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your [[Profiles|Firefox profile]] data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u> See [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]. <!-- Starting in Firefox 31, the Firefox uninstaller no longer lets you remove user profile data.Ref: Bug 432017 and https://support.mozilla.org/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer/discuss/5279 [Fx31] Windows uninstaller will no longer offer the option to remove personal data -->
Please report back to say if this helped you!
    Thank you.
