RRM Question - should I turn it on?

Hi community,
I used to work a lot with Cisco WLAN controllers. The last software I really tested was the last 4.2 release. But I still have a question regarding RRM, nobody was able to answer. Maybe some of you guys know it:
I'm never completely sure if I should take the risk of enabling RRM. I always set the channel and transmit power at fixed values. Here is why:
DCA (Dynamic Channel Assignment):
In theory, when an AP performs the RRM algorithm (default: every 10 minutes), and decides to switch the channel, how should an associated client know, that the AP plans to switch the channel. For the client point of view, it's like shutting down its AP, when the AP switches the channel.
With the latest Intel drivers, I recognized a connectivity loss of 5 - 15 seconds, until the client associates to another AP, or the AP which switched the channel.
The client cannot prepare for the roaming (channel changing) process. In the regulatory domain of ETSI (Europe), we have to use an altered standard for 802.11a (802.11h), which introduced DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection). Within this process, the AP has to change its channel, if it recognized radar in the 5 GHz band.
802.11h has some flags to inform the 802.11h capable clients, that the AP plans to switch the channel - so the clients have the chance to prepare for this event (roam).
Due to the connectivity loss for clients within DCA, I switched off that feature.
Did someone experience the same? Or is my theory totally bugged?
TPC (Transmit Power Control):
The only thing that concerns me, is when I attach something different than the standard 2,2dBi dipole antenna. When doing so, I am not allowed to transmit at 17dBm.
How does the AP know, that it isn't allowed to use the power value of 1 if a 6dBi antenna is attached? Does the antenna gain (0,5 x dBi) field in the AP settings work?
I never found something on CCO, stating this.
Again: Did someone experience the same? Or is my theory totally bugged?
Thank you for your help. I'm looking forward to this discussion :-)

It really boils down to what type of potential attacks you expect and
what it's ramifications would be.
You're right, Groupwise is encrypted end to end (except internet email
of course) by default. But that's not a documented, open encryption, and
nobody really knows how secure it is. It's most certainly secure enough
to stop an amateur hacker or someone just taking an occasion.
So you would want SSL (on top of it, BTW!), if that's not good enough
for you, and you want a known, open, documented encryption.

It really doesn't matter either way, from a security POV. The
certificates aren't truly enforced (except by the user, which you can't
trust usually), so a man in the middle attack will almost always be
possible, unless you train your users not to click away certificate
warnings. Good luck with that....
And of course, you can still import the self signed certificate into the
client beforehand when you initially install it.

I can't find a definite answer anywhere regarding whether or not you need to turn the iPad mini off before charging. So my question is should I turn the iPad mini off or leave it on before charging? Thanks in advance.

I rarely if ever turn my iPad off. I charge it when the battery is low or at night while I'm sleeping. Even then I close the Smart Cover and let it sleep but I do not turn it off. It doesn't matter when you charge the iPad.
The most efficient way to charge the iPad is to use the charger that came with it and plug that into a known good wall outlet.

  • Should I turn off my Mac Pro when not in use or leave it running?

I have been told I should never turn off my computer by some people, and others say that I should always turn it off when not in use!  I use my Mac Pro primarily for music recording/editing in my home studio or word processing.  Now that I have an iPad I use that for web browsing, email, FBing, etc. and I find myself on my Mac Pro a lot less.  I get the basis behind both trains of thought; those who leave it on feel always stopping and starting up puts unnecessary wear on the moving disks, and those who shut down think if the parts are always moving they are bound to wear out faster.  I am not as concerned with conserving power as I am with keeping my machine safe!  If you have any information on this topic I would love to hear it. Thanks!

Providing you have a robust firewal and are not worried as a result about being hacked then leave it turned on and allow it to sleep. Make sure you allow the screen to sleep as well a that is the item that is more prone to damage by being left on all the time.
I never turn my machine off, never have with any of my Macs ever since my first one back in 1979-ish and have never suffered any adverse affects. Today, the power drain is so small when allowed to sleep that I doubt they would offend even the ardent 'turn off everything and pull out the plug to save the planet' person.
If you have an iPad or iPod synced with the Mac for email and iCal and address Book etc. then if you leave it on it should be up to date as soon as you return home, mine is anyway. With iCloud coming out very soon that may come into play even more so with all its advance pushing etc. Just a thought.
One advantage in leaving the machine on (sleep) is that you can access it from anywhere in the world should the need arise with the appropriate settings, which you can't if you turn it off.
    Leave it on.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Should I turn iPod Touch off, or sleep?

When I do not plan to use my iPT for many hours, e.g. overnight, is it "best" to simply let it sleep, or should I turn it off?

If it's going to be "down" for more that 3 or 4 hours then I turn it off.
Which will certainly do no harm. However, it's not necessary, nor will it harm the Touch if you don't turn it off.

It might, but you have no other option to save your data.  And the longer you wait to do it, the weaker the battery will become, lessening the chance that you can perform a successful backup.

  • I just bought a mac book pro and airport time capsule. Which one should I turn on first to get it going. We do have an existing router and old PC in the house.

    Hi
I just brought home a mac book pro 13" with retina and the airport time capsule . What one should I turn on/ hook up first? We have an existing router in the home and an old PC.
    Suggestions?

Turn off you cable/DSL modem, your computer, and the old router. Disconnect the computer's Ethernet cable from the old router. Replace the old router with the Time Capsule. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. Connect the computer's Ethernet port to one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable.
Turn on the modem and wait until the status lights indicate connection with the ISP. Turn on the Time Capsule and wait for the amber light to begin flashing. Open Airport Utility in your Utilities folder to configure the Time Capsule.
If a user guide came with the Time Capsule I suggest you follow it's instructions.

  • Should I turn off my computer when I go om vacation?

should I turn off my desktop when I go on vacation, in the event ther is a thunderstorm?

Yes, turn it off.  I also agree that computers should be turned off when you are "done" for the day.  I have aquantainces that do not ever turn them off.  Their computers never seem to last a long.  My last computer at the office lasted over six years and was fine until space on the HD and memory became an issue.  My last Home Computer was almost a teenager before it was replaced.  If fact I just recently gave away my old Packard-Bell computer (Windows 95) and it still worked!  I do still have my Heath-Zenith (Cost $ 3000.00 new! With Zenith-DOS.)  -Have a good vacation!

  • On my mac should i turn on the firewall; and file vault or just leave them off?

On my mac should I turn on the firewall; and file vault or just leave them off?

Yes, you should turn on your Firewall, and in the advanced options, select 'stealth mode'.
Unless you want to encrypt your hard drive, you don't need File Vault and can leave it off.

  • Should i turn the slider on my laptop to off on time capsule when I go on vacation

Should I turn the slider to "off" on my MacBook Pro, if I go on vacation?
I noticed that I get a message that tells me a backup has not been made for some time and then it does a full back-up.
Will off (when away for extended periods) be a good thing to do or not?

I noticed that I get a message that tells me a backup has not been made for some time
    That would be normal.
and then it does a full back-up.
That would not be normal. Are you sure that it is doing a full backup? The backup may take a good deal of time if you have not backed up in a week or two.
Should I turn the slider to "off" on my MacBook Pro, if I go on vacation?
    Yes
