Rs232 adapter

Does it exist Apple rs232 adapter for serial communications ?
What software can I use with this adapter, in windows I used hyperterminal

  • USB to RS232 Adapter and Driver Advise - Heeeeelllllllpppppp Please!!

    Hi All,
Can someone please help me with an issue im having.
I currently have a hl-340 usb to rs232 adapter for me to be able to Console on to cisco equipment (as i am a network engineer).
I can not get this to work!! i have installed the pl2303 driver as recommended by the place who sold this to me on ebay which has not worked, i have looked around and saw the option of installing the keyspan for this product USA-19HS but with no joy.
I need to get this working ASAP or look to purchase a new one. I am based in the UK so if it is not possible to get this working then can you advise on what one will work?
I am a novice to the Mac so any assistance you can all give will be greatly received.
    Thanks

Let's figure out what you have first. Plug in you RS-232 adapter. If the system has a driver that recognizes it, it should pop up a window about detecting a new network interface. If that happens, your USB device is recognized and should be working. If not, you may have the wrong driver loaded.
In any case, open the System Profiler application (click the Apple logo in the menu bar, then About This Mac, then More Info). When the app opens, click USB (under the Hardware heading) in the left window pane. This will reveal all detected USB buses, hubs, and devices. On my system, my RS-232 adapter shows up as USB-Serial Controller. Clicking on it shows these details in the bottom pane:
    USB-Serial Controller:
    Product ID: 0x4026
    Vendor ID: 0x1453
    Version: 3.00
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Prolific Technology Inc.
    Location ID: 0xfd323000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 100
Your details may be different, especially the Product and Vendor ID. For the PL2303 driver to work, I think the important part is that the Manufacturer is Prolific Technology. If it's something else, you may need a different driver. Try to find your device, and reply back with its details.
With the adapter still connected, click Extensions (under the Software heading) in the left window pane. A list of all kernel extensions will be displayed. This will take a while.
On my system, with the driver that I recommended, the extension name is osx-pl2303. Clicking on it shows these details in the bottom pane:
    osx-pl2303:
    Version: 1.0.0d1
    Last Modified: 05/27/06 11:49
    Kind: Universal
    Architectures: i386, ppc
    64-Bit (Intel): No
    Location: /System/Library/Extensions/osx-pl2303.kext
    Kext Version: 1.0.0d1
    Load Address: 0x3599e000
    Valid: Yes
    Authentic: Yes
    Dependencies: Satisfied
If yours also displays this, then your device should be working. If so, then you'll need to figure out how to get your software to recognize it. Reply back with whatever details you find.

  • Problems with asynchronous visa read with USB to serial port adapter

I have an application that sends and recieves data from a power supply and on most computers (desktop PCs), the application runs fine. I found that on at least one computer, using a Keyspan Tripp Lite USB to RS232 adapter, in one out of 25 queries, I wasn't getting the whole reply back from the instrument. After some debugging I found out if I switch the VISA write and read calls from synchronous to asynchronous I don't see the error any more. Is there a way to disable asynchronous mode for that computer? I'd rather not have to find all the VISA write calls in my application and update each one just to support that computer.
    CLD (2014)

Try playing with the Tx ACK Advance setting on that port first.  (From the Keystone config utility)  You might also look into the Rx FIFO buffer settings (16 is a short default buffer)
There is no (Easy) way to universally disable Async .   VISA Async tranfers MAY complete synchronously anyhow (It throws a warning when that happens)  So if Keystone settings do not help you might want to swap out to a FTDI chip enabled USB - serial device.

  • Communicate with LIN device via RS232

    Hi,
We have a project to communicate with a card containing the LIN bus. I seek a solution to communicate directly with the card via the RS232 port. I think use an rs232 adapter and a rs232-LIN transceiver directly to the card. The links below containinformation of material:
    http://www.mikroe.com/eng/downloads/get/1276/max232_manual_v100.pdf
    http://www.mikroe.com/eng/downloads/get/1507/lin_manual_v100.pdf
I want to know if anyone has used this solution before. Do you think this is feasible. Thus, the problem is that Labwindows allows easy implementation of code ofcommunication with the card (functions, examples ...).
Thank you for your opinion about this solution.

    Hello,
Sorry for the delay. Can you describe me your solution. I thought of another alternative. Can I communicate directly using the rs232 port, a LIN  transceiver and a power adapter (rs232 to TTL). Can you tell me what library I should use because I do not know really what is the principle.
    Many thanks

  • USB to RS232 Terminal Emulator

As part of my job, I have to connect to equipment which uses an RS-232 interface. Since the PowerBook doesn't have a serial port which I can use to connect, I have available to me a USB-to-RS232 adapter. However, how do I establish this connection? On the Windoze laptops I can use HyperTerminal to establish the connection through the "COM" port, but is there a similar native application to the Mac or a recommended one? Can "Terminal" perform this function, as a VT100 Emulator? I've downloaded Soundforge's iTerm, but it just seems to be the same thing as "Terminal". Any suggestions?

A simple terminal emulator application that you can use is zterm.

  • Thinkpad with serial port (RS232)

For my job I need a laptop with a serial (RS232) port.
I have the choice of the following laptops: Lenovo Thinkpad X230, X230T, T430, T530, W530.
Neither of them have a serial port, right?
I saw some mention of an adapter for the ultrabay slim bay, that would support an RS232 adapter.
Does that work for all the above mentioned models?
And if so, would the RS232 port work in the same way as the regular one? I need to program e.g. an Agilent datalogger with Labview to measure and recieve the measured data through the serial port.
    Kind regards,
    Rachel.

    thare are two ways :
    1. you can buy a usb to seial cable converter.
    2. if your laptop have a Docking Station. there is a serial port in the Docking station.  Put your laptop on the Docking station, the windows system will automatically recognizes the serial port.
For example, my laptop is thinkpad x61t,  Itself does not have any serial port, But there is a serial port on the Docking station.

  • How I set up an RS232 serial fax modem with Snow Leopard

A few times each year I need to send a fax.  I don't have a fax machine.
My Macbook Pro does not have a phone input or built in modem but I have an old RS232 serial fax modem in perfect working order.
    I purchased a Pluggable PL2303 USB to RS232 adapter.
Here is how to install a serial fax modem on a Mac running Snow Leopard using this adapter.
    1. With the adapter disconnected, Install the Prolific driver for Snow Leopard found at http://plugable.com/drivers/prolific/
    2. Plug the adapter into a USB port.  You should get a window recognizing it and asking to set it up.
    3.  If you're not there, go to System Preferences and click on Network.  In Network, click on "USB Serial Controller D".  You will get a configuration section.
    4. In the drop-down under configuration, click on "Add configuration".  Name this configuration  what you like.  I named mine "fax modem".
    5. Click on the "Advanced" button near the bottom of the configuration section.  You will get a window with 5 tabs, labeled "Modem", "DNS", "WINS", "Proxies", and "PPP".   Click on "Modem".
    6.  Fill in the modem fields "Vendor", "Model" and "Dial Mode" using the field drop downs.  I found my Vendor, Zoom, in the drop down list but my model (56K faxmodem) was not in the Model drop down so I guessed and picked "Universal 115K".
I left the defaults - Dial Mode to "Wait for dial tone before dialing", Dialing to Tone and Sound to On, and "Enable error correction and compression in modem" checked.
Click OK.  Click Apply.  Close System Preferences.
    7. Adding the fax to Printers and Faxes in System Preferences cannot be done the usual way, by clicking the + sign.  Instead, the fax printer will be installed using the CUPS administrative tools as follows:
Open a browser and type "http://localhost:631/" (without the quotes) into the browser's address field.
This should bring up the CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) page.
    8. Click on the "Administration" tab. Under "Printers", click on "Add Printer" and log in to CUPS as your system administrator.
You will get the "Add Printer" screen.
    9. Under "Local Printers" select "Fax".  Then click "Continue". You will get the URI screen with the word "fax" in the "Connection" field.  Fill in the field so it looks like this:
    fax://dev/cu.usbserial
Then click "Continue".  You will get the name, description and location screen.
    10. Fill in the fields as indicated.  For name, I used "faxprinter". For Description, I  entered "fax modem".  For Location I entered "Serial Port".  I left "Share this Printer" unchecked.  When done, Click Continue.  You will get the PPD screen.
    11. Ignore the "Make" field.  Next to "Or Provide a PPD File", click on "Choose File".
    Navigate to boot disk (usually Macintosh HD)/ System / Library / Frameworks / ApplicationServices.framework / Versions / A / Frameworks / PrintCore.framework / Versions / A / Resources /     and choose the file "Fax.ppd".
    12. Click "Add Printer" and you are done.

Thanks for your detailled description of the faxmodem installation!
I've tried this with Mac OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion and it works fine.
I've to type "cupsctl WebInterface=yes" in terminal to see the interface.
Does anybody know, if send faxes are saved somewhere?

  • Windows XP in BootCamp using USB-to-serial converter

I know this is all ancient equipment, but here is my dilemma.
I have an old computer-operated embroidery sewing machine I would like to use.  In order to use it, I need a machine that has RS232 and parallel printer ports.  My current machine is a MacBook 2,1 running OS 10.6.8.  Since the sewing machine works in Windows XP, I need to run that software in BootCamp with XP and Service Pack 3.  I purchased a USB-to-RS232 adapter cable, but the XP will not recognize the cable as a "port" to allow the software to recognize it.  When checking Device Manager in XP, the cable shows up as "other devices."
    Therefore, my question is:
How to I get a MacBook 2,1 running Windows XP in BootCamp to recognize a USB-to-RS232 cable as a port?

    Mister_Karl wrote:
No.  The cable came with no drivers.
I would think it should have since serial ports are long gone natively. The drivers might have been a separate download. In any case, Staples offers a USB to serial cable and has a separate download of drivers here. No guarantees, but you might give it a try. This is the cable the drivers go with.

  • [Solved] serial to usb not working - gpsbabel with garmin etrex

I'm trying to transfer some data from an old garmin etrex gps via a serial cable (Startech.com 1 Port FTDI USB to Serial RS232 Adapter Cable with COM Retention) which claims to work with linux.
    However, I try:
    $ sudo gpsbabel -i garmin -f /dev/ttyUSB0 -o gpx -F /home/adam/mygpx.gpx
    and get -
GPS_Packet_Read: No DLE. Data received, but probably not a garmin packet.
    GARMIN:Can't init /dev/ttyUSB0
I seem to remember that this unit held garmin data, but instead I try -i gpx and the whole thing seems to hang for a very long time.

OK - worked this one out in the end. Changed the type of data on the garmin etrex itself to 'garmin' and then gpsbabel worked fine.

  • ASA5505 - Setting up a LAN to access Internet

    Hi there,
I am new to the Networking and CISCO world, although I used to play around iptables and Untangle firewalls. Unfortunately my laptop does not have a serial port and until I get a USB-to-RS232 adapter I am going to use ASDM for the setup of my infrastructure. So basically I want to replace Untangle with my newly delivered ASA5505 to obtain the following fairly simple infrastructure:
    VLAN1 - management (192.168.1.1)
    VLAN2 - outside interface internet (x.x.x.x)
    VLAN3 - lan (192.168.100.x)
First of all suffice to say that I am on the base licence. Can I make the lan (vlan3) connect to the internet? I have restricted flow from vlan3 to vlan1 to be able to use a third vlan, and hopefully connect it to the internet. For some reason, I am not able to reach the internet from vlan3 although I got a DHCP .100 address on the client and can connect to the others.
When I connect the laptop to the management interface, I have internet access.
The only static route I have is the default internet one. I am assuming all the other VLANs communicate with each other.
    Can someone help me please?

    Hello
On the outside interface - ( facing the internet)  you  can either:
    1) enable dhcp and use the set-route command to use the default-gateway from the allocated ip range
         int vlan
         nameif outside
         ip address dhcp setroute
    2) apply a static Ip address and set a default route to point to the next hop ip of the isp public ip
    int vlan
         nameif outside
         ip address X.X.X.X  Y.Y.Y.Y
         route outside 0 0  X.X.X.X  ( isp public next-hop ip)

  • UPS not recognized by Lenovo IX4-300D

    Hi there,
My new IX4-300D is not seening Xfinity Pro Series 2000VA 1200W Uninterruptible Power Supply connected by USB.
QNAP TS-269L on the same subnet has no problem seeing the same Xfinity UPS.
QNAP TS-269L is presently setup as a master. In GUI added IP addresses for QNAP TS-459 Pro II and Lenovo IX4-300D as slaves.
QNAP TS-459 Pro II sees the UPS on QNAP TS-269L, but Lenovo IX4-300D is still unaware of the UPS.
I am using GUI on QNAP and IX4-300D because I am not familiar with Linux and command line.
I can connect to QNAPs using WinSCP.
I have two exactly the same UPSs and would prefer to connect IX4-300D to UPS via USB directly.
If direct connectivity is not possible, I would like IX4-300D to at least recognize that it is a slave.
What can be done about it? Please provide instructions. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Tom

    Hello TuToTom
I have been unable to find a specific listing of what USB driver the unit uses, however the user manual lists the usb port as the serial connection.  With most UPS devices that list the usb port as a serial power it usually means that the unit uses a usb to serial (rs232) adapter internally.
The Lifeline NAS devices support USBHID-UPS enabled UPS devices.  Most APC models, dell, and eaton units can or do use this driver.  This would be different than the usb connected serial link method.
I recommend contacting the ups manufacturer to confirm how the usb port on your ups unit functions and proceed from there.

  • Reverse Engineering Portmon log to obtain Labview serial configuration settings

    Hi there,
I am attempting to interface Labview with a custom-designed power supply device through a USB-RS232 adapter. The power supply came with a "debugging interface" programmed in java with which one can send and recieve commands to the board (detect, set voltage, get voltage, stop, reset, etc.) through the USB-RS232 adapter which works fine.
I however am not experienced with java in the least and want to streamline command sequences with Labview, as I am interfacing the rest of my lab equipment with Labview. I dont have experience connecting serial devices, I do have USBTMC & GPIB VISA interfaces with the other equipment.
Nonethless I've tried the advanced serial communication example provided by NI, (http://www.ni.com/example/27665/en/) - I have appropriately set to COM3 as my device manager (and MAX) find the correct port for the device, baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity, flow control, XON/XOFF characters, Input Buffer Size, End read/write with termination character, which termination character, and how long till time out.
Yet from my Portmon log, I'm seeing that the java interface sets a few other parameters that I (at the moment) do not have access to through the labview VI (or from MAX). How do I set Output Buffer Size? What are  EOF? EVT? Replace? XON/OFF limits? WC? How do I set them?
Both Portmon log files are attached.
    Attachments:
javaserial device config log.txt ‏4 KB
    configlabview.LOG ‏6 KB

Output Buffer Size - This is set with the VISA Set I/O Buffer Size VI that is in the example you were looking at. The documentation says it is just the Input buffer size but it is actually the I/O buffer size.
This forum post answers your question about XON/OFF Limits:

  • 1-wire temperature in LabView

    Hi
I'm trying to write a driver for 1-wire (www.ibutton.com) to LabView.
For starters I didn't have any contact at all! But now I can read the uniqe ID from temperature sensors connected to both my USB and my RS232 adapter.
    And then the fun stops.
I can not communicate with the temperature chips (DS1920 & DS1822) I can't even get the IsTemperatureContainer to reply with a true.
Does anyone have the time to review my code and maybe suggest changes?
You can request a free samlpe at www.ibutton.com I recomend getting a DS1920 and a DS9490B for testing purposes, order sampels from here: http://www.maxim-ic.com/samplescart.cfm
You need to have the OWAPI installed (http://db.maxim-ic.com/ibutton/example/)......
But if you know a better way or can use one of the other API's please let me know. I just need to read the temperature, how it's done is not important (except it has to be done with LabView).
Please help, this is very urgent.
    J;-)

I am trying to do the same with DS18S20.
    I plan on using a DS2480 to convert 1-Wire to RS232.
I need to use simple ASCII commands which I plan to write a Automated test program in LabVIEW.
    Should I get HA7E is a RS232 to 1-Wire interface? or can HA2 - RS232 1-Wire Host Adapter do the same function?
I have a DS1820 I need to use the CRC algorithm Specified by Dallas and
    perform the following Tests:
Read 64 bit ROM of DS18S20, Resultant byte from CRC algorithm must match
the eight (last) byte of ROM.
Read 72 bit Scratchpad of DS18S20, Resultant byte from CRC algorithm must
match the ninth (last) byte of Scratchpad.
    Next, I have to:
TH byte is downloaded from E2 memory to scratchpad. TH byte in scratchpad
    is read.
TL byte is downloaded from E2 memory to scratchpad. TL byte in scratchpad
    is read.
Finally, I need to read Temperature, which is read via data in
    bytes 0,1,6 & 7 of the Scratchpad.
Can I accomplish this by MANUALLY typing the commands over the RS-232 Comm
    Port from a PC?????
If anyone has any comments or am I taking the correct path? your help appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Windows and serial port adapters

    Hi Everyone,
I am looking to buy a new notebook and am having trouble getting any answers about running Windows on a Mac. I do the bulk of my work programming PLCs, microprocessors, touchscreens, etc... Most of the interfacing is done over RS-232, USB, and Ethernet. All of my programming software is Windows based. I would have to use a ExpressCard/34 slot serial adapter for the RS-232.
My question is: Will Windows have any trouble accessing and using all the ports? Is anyone else doing this kind of thing and making it work?
    Thank you for any help.
    Layne

    Hi Layne,
I have had great success using Windows and a Belkin USB to RS232 adapter to program Clear-Com RS601 beltpacks and XTA loudspeaker processors.
All that was needed was to install the Belkin drivers.

  • Reccomendation for a small headless computer

I am building a small data acquisition system.  It will gather RS232 signals from a medical device, and then insert this data into a remote database.
I was just wondering if my fellow wireworkers could reccomend a small solid-state headless computer that I could use for this puporse.  General requirements are:
    - Small form factor
    - Headless (no monitor)
    - Quiet (no fan?)
    - Solid-state, if possible (no moving parts)
    - Network capable
    - Preferrably with a built-in serial port ... if not, maybe an ExpressCard slot so I can add one.
    - Not sure about the CPU and RAM.  But maybe something that on par with an i3 processor?
    - I am flexible on the OS, and would be happy to hear some advice.  Probably leaning towards Win7, and then converting to Linux if it proves unstable.

    Hi Josborne,
I have used two devices that may be good candidates for your app, though, I never had a test-application that required one.
There are many wireless routers (small, cheap, network capable, no fan/moving-parts) which can be flashed with Linux.  I believe they all expose one or more serial ports on the edge of circuit-board, but you could confirm this for a specific model before purchase.  Non-volitle memory may be an issue, though some of these routers have USB ports which might satisfy memory requirements.  If you're interested, try Googling "open-wrt" and "dd-wrt" among many other Linux versions which target these devices.
Another option might be a tiny PC like the Lenovo IdeaCenter Q150.  This is a full-fledged PC (purchased mine with Win 7) and could be run "headless".  It has a variable-speed fan that is very quiet.  There's no DB9 serial port, but  a USB to RS232 adapter ought to work for you (looks just like a COM port on the application-side.)
Please post back with other options you may discover - sounds like a fun app!
    Cheers.
